welcome to watchmojo, and today we'll be counting down our top ten garroths /ref /silly i'll be doing it as a top five, and we're getting competetive with our garroth rankings here /lh

before we start, here are some honourable mentions (in no particular order):

alternates garroth (even though i'm yet to watch alternates)(i'm bad i know):

i don't have much to say other than that his death scene was lowkey harrowing

upside down stories garroth (once again something i haven't watched):

i really like the concept of this series so i'm planning to watch it, but he looks so silly with this hair style that it just makes me giggle (and i also really like that this series proves garroth and aphmau really will be friends in every universe)

whiskerwood garroth (um. again. haven't watched all of it):

fishie. that's all i gotta say <3 i think he's mainly there to for lore-purposes

babygar:

i dont really think he counts as variant but in my heart he does. the little babbayyyyyy he's soo sweet <3 most of his personality i snatch from this side story, where i really liked that we got some insight into what he was like when he was little. he's a little sulky, kind of a little shit, but he's really kind :) some things don't change. oh, and he's super cute!!!! <3

early side stories garroth:

i put this in here just for me. he's dear to me. this is the garroth i would've wanted in mystreet (more on this later). the parts where he's shy but insanely obvious about his crush on aphmau (in a non-creepy way, imo) (i don't count 'the big move' onwards as this garroth btw) are just very dear to me. and his friendships with laurance and dante shine through so much in these videos <3 sighs. one day jess will bring the guard trio back to me

and now, the moment you've all been waiting for!!!! (me. it's just me. i'm my own audience /silly)

5. SMP Garroth

here i'm mainly referring to garroth from the cocomau videos (and yes, this includes him in the diaries video because that was not my mcd garroth </3). he's fun. i like that he gets to be a bit of a shithead, stealing from aphmau and messing around with kim. i know the smp isn't supposed to be serious, and in that regard i really like him and i always watch the videos he's in. but there's something so distinctly... off about him. i don't know what it is—it's like there's something about him missing. everyone else in the smp keeps some of their constant personality traits, like aphmau and her awkwardness, love for cute things and her willingness to help others, or zane with his grouchiness or even ein with his pathetic need to be loved and how he goes about it the exact wrong way. but with garroth... there's something missing. to me his closest match to any other garroth is captain garroth, because he's mean and he lies and steals. i think what's missing is that underlying kindness. each and every garroth has a bit of a mean streak but they also have moments of kindness within them, and smp garroth misses that mark for me.

i do really like that andy leans into his british accent when playing him though LMAO

4. Mystreet Garroth:

i know for a fact this one might be a little controversial,, but just hear me out. don't get me wrong, i do adore myst garroth. i think part of the reason for his low ranking is bias, given that when he first came into existence i was really, really, really upset about his 'mischaracterisation', so to speak. nowadays i see him and mcd garroth as seperate people which does boost my view of him a lot more, but a small patr of me will never let that vitrol hatred go.

now, i'm gonna split this up into sections, given that there's so much of him to talk about.

PDH: on one hand, some of my favourite scenes from this series are the ones with garroth in (like the art class episode), and on the other so are some of my least favourite. as someone who usually likes garroth for his good and bad traits, he was just so... eugh here. i hate so, so much that he stole aphmau's first kiss without asking, lied to his best friend about taking her on a date, and used ivy the way he did in season 2. some of this i can put down to the typical mean-streak of a teenage boy but then you see him genuinely being kind and understanding what he's done is wrong, and it just feels like, why didn't you realise this in the first place...?

one of the most poignant scenes with garroth in this series is this one. i think about it a lot. we only ever see him acting calm and collected in his other scenes, very rarely letting loose to tease laurance or be a bit vulnerable, but this scene shows another side to him. the slow rise to anger as he grits his teeth and tells his brother to stop resulting into him lashing out and slamming his hands on the table in anger, followed by him walking away because that's what he does best, isn't it. he walks away. and it just goes to show that garroth will always have an anger inside him, and it will always be brought out by zane. every time, without fail.

however, there are some merits to his character. he does eventually, eventually apologise to aphmau, and gives her space when she needs it. while this doesn't make up for what he's done to her, it's something. it's a start. and he accepts her decision for more time to herself which i think is a big thing for teenagers. over all, he's... kinda bad. but his redeemable qualities come through in the end.

FCU: man, he kinda just...exists. we don't get much about him outside of his ""crush"" on aphmau (because apparently they can't just be friends) but this isn't about my gripes with jess' sometimes questionable writing choices). he persues her in hopes of a relationship, doesn't think about his words before he says them and makes her have to reject him again. at what point does it become tiring for him?

i would've loved to have seen him interact more with mack (his roommate) and zane. it would've added some subtance to his character.

again, there's a scene here where his anger comes through. i do like the idea of garroth not knowing his own strength and being quite scared of that, but it feels so lackluster to me. it all gets fixed with a wave of his daddy's magic wand, which, yeah. but garroth didn't really dwell on it nor have more to say about nearly killing someone which i think is a little weird given that this series is thIRTY EPISODES LONG /lh

all in all, eh

Mystreet: oh boy. we're finally here.

i have a very complicated relationship with this version of garroth. it started with the silliest thing: his voice. i hated that he was voiced in such a silly way as a kid, because i adored his voice acting in diaries. i've mostly gotten over this now (though sometimes i miss his smooth voice dearly). and everything kind of snowballed from there, with his borderline-stalking of aphmau, the inabililty to make no for an answer. i know it's a comedic thing, but it's such an uncomfortable watch for me.

the further in the series we get the less garroth-like he becomes in my opinion. garroth was never this fun, silly guy who was kind of stupid. he becomes comedic relief, only ever having a few moments of angst slapped in here and there, and i think it really shows that jess just didn't like his character all that much anymore. he's so entrenched in her channel that she can't leave him behind, but she hated what he became so she changed him completely. i don't want to go in complete detail about this because i could go on about it forever and a day, but it just boils down to the fact he's incapable of being serious and he's unintentionally cruel. the best scene i know of this is in season four when he laughs at zane for being sexually assaulted. you know the one. it's so fucked and out of character because garroth's one redeeming quality is that he's kind. he's so fucking kind guys. that's all i can say positively about him. i'm so glad this was kept as a part of his personality.

i've seen people say that myst garroth is what mcd garroth could've been if he didn't have as much trauma, and i don't really agree with that take. this garroth has his own trauma, it's just that the two of them are fundamentally different.

3. Prince Garroth

"Father... I'm sorry... But as you raised me, my kingdom comes first." 💙👑

a royal tale is shit. there, i said it. it had potential but there was waaay too much going on, all crammed into a tiny amount of episodes. the story felt so lackluster and confusing and— we aren't here to talk about the series, but garroth himself. and boooy do i have things to say. this, this is a good garroth characterisation. he's a little shy and kind of terrible with his words (see the time he straight up insults jenny's clothes lmao). but one thing you can't say about him is that he doesn't commit. that man fights a sorcerer with nothing but a shitty little sword, tells everyone he wants aphmau to be his queen the second his father makes it clear they all have to marry someone, and he kills his own father. the one person we see him interacting so much in this series, the one person we can tell he genuinely loves and trusts with all his heart. but the second that man endangers his friends and his people, he shoves a sword through his stomach.

i do have my gripes with him, like how late he actually inserted himself into the narrative despite and how quickly he gets over his since-childhood crush on aphmau, but over all he's a strong contender who would've probably been somewhere closer to second had a royal tale actually been good lmfao.

2. Captain Garroth

i said some about him in this post, but this version of him genuinely itches a good part of my brain. garroth ro'meave as a lying, stealing cheat? yeah. giving into his less desirable side and just kind of making people feel a little uncomfortable is exactly what i expect from a pirate version of him. and it's also incredibly funny how pathetic he is (i laughed so hard when he passed out at the sight of a shark. dude, you saIL THE FREAKING OCEAN). special shout out to his weird relationship with aaron in this series, it's beautiful and i need more of it

and lastly, to the surprise of nobody:

1. Minecraft Diaries Garroth <3<3<3<3<3<3

yes i know i'm predictable, but what else did you think this answer was going to be? i've thought about this man every day for the last ten years. he's kind of an asshole sometimes easily led to anger, can't communicate to save his life, repressed, depressed, and The walking anxiety. there's is something to deeply wrong with him and i'm not sure i ever want to know what it is.

but at the same time he is so kind. i once saw someone call him selfish and it hurt my heart because garroth ro'meave is not selfish. he's blunt, obnoxious at times, maybe a little distrustful, but he is not selfish. that man would do anything for anyone and he wouldn't stop until he dropped. even after the trauma he had in childhood (i'm talking about the canon events of losing his little brother and being forced into an occupation he doesn't want, not just my worrying amount of headcanons here) he still remains someone who puts his absolute all into the people he cares for. he's rough and tumble but he's also very, very fragile. the cracks show at the worst moments and he fucks things up but he always makes up for the fact after

i'm going to have to keep that as short and concise otherwise we will genuinely be here all day.
