LEYA — I Forget Everything (NNA Tapes)

Haunted art songs chill the air in follow-up to 2020’s Flood Dream from the classically trained harpist Marilu Donovan and singer/violinist Adam Markiewicz. These icy beauties leave plenty of space for contemplation, amid off-tuned harp chords and operatic flights of fancy. Markiewicz, in particular, is a fascinating presence, his voice dream-like, disembodied and indeterminately gendered. He sounds like Circuit des Yeux’s Haley Fohr, hypnotic, transporting and unsettling.

Four years ago Dusted observed, “This is good, odd stuff, angelically beautiful, but with a chilling undertone. Both Donovan and Markiewicz know what they’re doing well enough to subvert their instruments, making music that is inhumanly lovely and disturbing.” That’s all true enough now — though our assumption, last time, that it was Donovan singing is not. Her contribution comes through in the shimmering shards of percussive harp sound, like ice crystals catching the sun and turning it to rainbows.

This album is different because it incorporates a lush palette of electronic sounds. Hear them swell en masse in the track “Eden of Haze” like a movie orchestra bringing on the emotional climax. The cut pulls back suddenly to just harp and eerie vocals, a cavernous echo surrounding them. They rise again towards the end of the track, a Ligeti swell of ecstatic sound that cuts off dead at the finish.

Markiewicz’s voice is an entrancing thing, so riveting in tone that it’s hard to make out the words. (You’re staring straight at it. It eludes you anyway.) Yet these are compositions that work on a non-verbal, non-cerebral level. You’ll feel like you’re in church or at the top of a mountain with a glorious view, struck silent for once, not even hearing the chatter in your head, because of the pure elusive beauty of the song.

i could use a spreadsheet person for timeline stuffs... i havent the patience to put everything into a nice, neatly organized, easy to follow chart. and im trying to juggle FIVE UNIVERSES into ONE SINGULAR TIMELINE

i love making spreadsheets. the only problem with making spreadsheets is that i don't have enough things to turn into spreadsheets. the spreadsheet market is in shambles. but i can't just ask people if i'm allowed to make them spreadsheets, because if you go up to someone and go can i make you a spreadsheet they go literally why would you do that. but Sometimes you can social engineer your way into making a spreadsheet for someone and that's the most beautiful feeling in the world.
