camille finally saved up enough money for a little trip into town to get a very important new member of the family! this sweet little filly's name is piano! she was the only horse at the rescue with decent traits also why sienna looking kinda... *tucks hair behind ear cutely*

Okay but that’s not an all out gallop. That’s a pretty easy lope.

I might suggest looking for inspiration in riders. Look at someone riding a galloping horse. Probably bent closer toward the horse to minimize drag, arms tucked but hands forward to let the horse strive with its head. Bottom jawline parallel to the ground even though they’re bent over.

Could look at riders upper halves when they’re on a horse mid-jump. It’s called two-point contact. Might provide more insight or inspiration.

After YQY’s transformation into an alicorn, he was taught how to use his magic and flight by mostly his shizun, Qiong Ding peers and fellow head disciples.

LQG was the pegasus who helped him with his flight skills the most, though SQH was better at helping him grasp the basics of flight

Something about the basics already being second nature to LQG so he finds it difficult to convey the concept, while SQH is normally a weak flier who often gets winglocked (like Fluttershy) so he knows many ways to make the basics make sense .iykwim

I actually chose that weak flier who gets winglocked trait for SQH because I felt like it would make the Moshang Maigu Ridge scene cooler + it fits the flighty persona he has I guess ahah

Zui Xian head disciple is also a pegasus but was barred from teaching YQY because they weren’t gonna “teach the future sect leader to fly like a drunk”

YQY does give that ribbon to SJ as his first gift 🙂‍↕️ And if SJ noticed that it’s the same shade as his own magic then he didn’t say anything

More of an ‘on the whim idea w/o a solid reason’ I had while I was designing YQY, but the star shaped mark on his chest is more like a scar than his natural coat pattern. That’s why in the little ‘flashback’ Yue Qi doesn’t have it

Behind SJ’s cracked horn (TW: Abuse (read: Qiu Jianluo)) I imagine receiving abuse as a foal often resulted in strong magic surges from him (kinda like qi deviations but for unicorn magic) and out of fear QJL would inflict pain to his horn or use some kind of blocker to stop and permanently damage his magic

I entertained the idea of his horn being fully broken off in the first place but Wu Yanzi probably saw a use in his unicorn magic, so he could’ve restored his horn as best he can using backwater cultivation and magic methods lol

Bingge does snap off his horn on top of his limbs in PIDW tho

So yeah while he’s still able to use his magic he can’t control it with the same proficiency as he used to

I think the horn guards he wears, atop of hiding the scars/cracks, are probably made with engraved arrays that help to stabilise his unicorn magic

And the horn guards are probably like a status and wealth symbol too in the same way nail guards are, so it does feel a bit gaudy for SQQ to walk around with it all of the time as if he’s flaunting it

Why do newborn horses look kinda jacked and not soft and squishy like other newborn creatures? Or is it just her that looks muscly?

Honestly she's a lot scrawnier than she should be, however TWH foals tend to be longer and thinner at birth.

But think about it! Horses in the wild for instance, if they aren't born strong and healthy, will die pretty quickly out there. It's just adaptation to survive.

Holding a QH newborn is like holding onto a tight bundle of hard explosives, while holding onto a TWH baby is like holding onto a weird shaped jello bundle with limp noodle legs! Each breed is different, I suppose if TWH were wild they would have the survival instincts of a biscuit

i hesitate to put sam in the category of "wet cat" kinda guy because he simply doesn't have that sort of vibe. i feel like scrunkly wet cat-ness requires a certain level of. idk defiance?? a lack of dignity?? that he doesn't really have. idk. like yes he's a little guy who hurt himself kicking a filing cabinet but like. he said "ow" out loud afterwards all sad like. he pouts and audibly gives people big sad puppy eyes like all the time. there's no loss of dignity if his whole thing is being a noodle-armed little baby foal guy and he knows it. he's not a wet cat he's like. a dry but cold puppy shivering sitting outside your door looking up at you all sad like. he know he's pitiful but he Also knows he's cute (at least a little bit)

Okay so if work wasn’t absolutely horrible I’d have time to write up a whole thing about feral Rio but here’s a couple of things she did and still does, also yes! Of course Rio is on a leash, this girl will start chasing birds if given half a chance and has, she likes seeing how fast they can go

- She always rolls in the mud when it rains, at every opportunity shell roll around and just enjoy herself in the mud, Agatha found it cute in the beginning but over the centuries its been getting tedious

- Will growl at anyone, she won’t growl at children or babies because they are too precious for this world but everyone else? She’ll growl and wave her dagger around, there’s been a few times where Agatha had to drag her away from a few fights about to happen, Rio’s totally up for it though, she’ll fight everyone she doesn’t care

- Kinda obvious but she bites, she bites Agatha so much, they’ll be having a sweet moment cuddling and then Agatha would feel teeth bite into her arm “hey what the fuck Rio?” “You taste so delicious though I can’t help it”

- Eats with her hands refuses to use any utensils because she thinks they’re stupid, Rio thinks if you can’t tear apart the meat or fish without your hands you don’t deserve to eat, on that note she can’t open certain packets of food or snacks so she slinks up to Agatha sheepishly “can you help?” “Really? But i thought you were capable of using your bare hands to open things?” “I’ll use my bare hands to strangle you i just want my beef jerky”

-Never wears shoes, refuses to wear them anywhere, she’s basically an Australian but worse since she just wont wear them anywhere, it took Agatha weeks to convince her to wear shoes to a fancy restaurant, she claimed her feet got claustrophobic

-She can’t get drunk but when Rio drinks she pretends she’s drunk and runs up to other people scaring them, she also just climbs trees and runs away from Agatha, so they don’t drink together anymore

There’s more but I got some work to do for foaling season but I’ll come back to this!

I kinda like it when people use She/Her or They/Them or It/Its for Arceus. He/Him is a very common thing people fall into for the 'mon; even a movie once gave it a relatively masculine voice.

But being a truly androgynous or agender being, I like thinking about the more "ovum" aspects of Arceus.

It's myth is about it coming from an egg and hatching at the birth of the universe like the big bang. Arceus itself creates eggs of dragons and its considered a parent to them. If you look at Arceus's fat torso and take away the tail, legs, neck, etc-- you're left with what looks like a white oval EGG looking thing with the golden ring around it. (Kinda like a fancy decorative egg.)

My cringe association is this sort of myth/half-truth of female wild horses or wild equids "always being pregnant," or gestating a foal every year.

And I like Arceus to be WEIRD right? I don't think the designers intended it at all, but "perpetually pregnant equine-like divine being" speaks to me as a weird as hell interpretation of a weird as hell creature. "Mother Earth" in a sense.

Perhaps I just like the concept of focusing on more female associated symbolism apart from the male dominated Arceus interpretations as a punishing, patriarchal god-- often thought that its mega or form change would make it more human-like and wearing some kind of robe like Zeus.

i like the weird and whimsical Arceus that never "speaks" and stays animalistic, with non-human expressions but familiar needs of eating and sleeping and drinking water. It bluffs to avoid fights, but will defend its territory and way of life. It also nurtures and broods for the more vulnerable. It's the unicorn that will refuse to show its face for those who hunt it, and lay upon the lap of those pure of heart.

mama lyria is the gentlest mama ever. she loves to nuzzle into you and gently edge you on to try something new.

she understands that you guys have a language barrier, especially when her little is regressed, so she remains patient as you communicate.

will poke you with her horn gently (it isn't sharp) to tickle you before covering you in big wet licks (kisses)

bends down so you can get on her back and will carry you around centopia when you're tired. Usually, you fall asleep on her back before you even notice you're home.

delighted to have a little after Onchao leaves home to do his alicorn things, mama lyria can get lonely after all.

adores when you call her sweet names like mama, uni, etc. She takes a lot of pride knowing you trust her the way you do.

always on edge when outside, lyria knows that panthea and her guards are looking for unicorns every chance they get for their horns, and a lone elf protected by unicorns would be prime bait. When she hears them in the distance, she scoops you up and hides wherever she can, licking your face and nuzzling into you to keep you calm.

when onchao is home, she makes sure her little and her son get along well, encouraging you two to play.

when you're overstimulated, typically by fuddles ramblings, she will put her hoof down and firmly remove her foal from the situation. She's a protective mama and has no time for her baby to be upset.

introducing you to the rest of the herd was a little odd because what kinda foal is that!? But lyria makes sure you feel welcomed, and it doesn't take long before the rest of the unicorns adore you.

when she does inevitably get caught by Panthea and loses her horn, she's away from you, growing restless that her small one isn't safe within her grasp. She's much more anxious about her foal than her own safety.

reuniting with you is the first time you see mama lyria genuinely afraid and upset, she let's out large sighs and noises while she wraps you up in her large neck.

you plant kisses on her broken horn, babbling that she's still a unicorn and still pretty and of course still your mama!

just a few javieran horse headcanons because i like them a normal amount

branwen

- tall AND fat. kieran makes sure he’s always fed (maybe even accidentally a teensy bit overfed. just because kieran can’t help but indulge him when he butts him with his head or nuzzles at his pockets when he knows there’s treats in there. but never too much because ‘obesity is a problem, even in animals !’). probably about 17hh, taller than average for a kentucky saddler but nothing too big. especially since kieran himself is quite tall

- VERY well-tempered, both naturally, as well as because kieran has literally made him bulletproof. bagged him, blanketed him, stood, jumped, backflipped onto and off of him. this kindly gentleman of a horse only spooks when he wants to be bratty specifically.

- i think he’s about 6 or so, came from the stables kieran worked at after being orphaned, he was just a colt when kieran was just a kid. kieran learned how to birth foals quickly, and branwen happened to be one of them. with the way that they fell in love with each other and the way that branwen whinnied and pranced up to the fence when kieran came back to buy him after the army didn’t work out, you’d think that horse was born just for him.

- his favourite treats, in order, are rutabaga (kieran’s secret for branwen’s glossy coat. also why he’s kinda fat.), boiled potatoes mixed into his oats, apples, and fresh greens. he’s simultaneously incredibly easy to please because of the simplicity of the latter parts of his favourites list and also very needy and complicated because kieran so loves to make his pony happy with his absolute favourite treats, so he tries his very best to get branwen’s eccentric tastes pleased once falling into the VDL’s.

- i always say “a horse’s favourite thing to do is hurt itself”, and i think this statement holds relatively true for branwen as well, though there’s a 25% chance that he’s actually hurt, a 50% chance that he’s only mildly injured or spooked and he’s playing it up to get kieran to dote on him, and a 25% chance that he will protect kieran with his life when they’re in a dire situation (see: snake on the ground or gunfire nearby. or even god forbid a spare tumbleweed find it’s way rolling nearby.) despite kieran’s last wish being his horse getting injured. branwen thinks that he’s gotta be The Man and protect his dad sometimes. it does not help in any situation ever whatsoever.

- branwen is the PERFECT companion for a trail riding date. he’s settled, calm, has a great gait, and as a gelding, truly is not worried about other horses being “faster” than him, so he never gets rowdy nor has any problems when partner riders/horses crowd him. kieran is allowed to ask for as many kisses as he pleases because branwen will never jump when javier’s gold-tipped boots poke him in the side and boaz irritatedly flicks his flank with his tail. truly a goated wingman. also never complains about long rides, and enjoys being out of camp with his rider for as much as physically possible for both of them, so he’s never barnsour in either direction.

boaz

- as an american paint, he’s naturally short and stocky. saddle ends up being a bit loose, though, as javier isn’t as dedicated to keeping him perfectly fed or groomed. he loves him, sure, but horses are somewhat of tools to him, so he kinda does slightly more than bare minimum to keep him kempt and healthy. around 14.5hh, slightly shorter than average and quite dense with muscle

- temperamentally a bit volatile. this horse has just as much drama as his rider, if not a little more. doesn’t like something ? ridden too long ? that stick looks too much like a snake ? hasn’t spent enough time with kieran that day ? he will snort and grunt and bunny hop if javi isn’t on him, and shudder hard enough the saddle shakes underneath him if he is. boaz likes to please his rider, but he also demands pleasure himself, and has no issue with “accidentally” placing a hoof on his owners nice, intentionally clean boots, and subsequently slowly leaning more and more of his weight onto it when he doesn’t immediately get what he wants. bratty pony. generally, he keeps javier safe, though, when it comes down to it.

- around 5 years old. after dutch found javier trying to steal chickens the first time they met, he soon took him back to that ranch and their first take as gang leader and member was a 1 year old grey paint colt for javi to train and subsequently ride. until he was rideable, javier rode a morgan that was formerly hosea’s, named carolina, while he lead boaz everywhere behind him.

- favourite treats, in order, are corn cobs (especially dried), prickly pear fruit AND cactus, sugar cubes, and sliced apples. will force javier to share his maiz with him. javier has always sliced his apples up since he was a colt, not only because javi simply finds comfort in toying with his knife, but also because boaz will not eat them otherwise. javi will also cut all of the spines off of the cactus before letting boaz eat them.

- in terms of injury, boaz is the most dramatic tank on the planet. this horse could arthur morgan-style run face first into a tree and then fall off a cliff and walk it off. but not before he gimps and limps and whines and teeth grinds his way into javier leading him instead of riding him for the next mile or two. once kieran started taking care of him, there is also a 25% chance of boaz faking a terribly painful injury just to get kieran to dote on him.

- kinda the worst wingman ever LMFAO easily annoyed, easily aroused, easily offended, and as a stallion, HAS to walk in front of the “herd” (his rider’s boyfriend and his horse). pins his ears back, smashes into personal space, flicks branwen with his tail (and preferably kieran, if he can reach him) even sometimes will nip at branwen if the latter tries to calmly make this date a date and not a life or death race (whoever loses, their dad is gay) and walk side-by-side to aid their riders’ hand holdings. will make executive decisions via stopping or veering off for fresh green grass beside the trail, will at points actively attempt to shudder javier out of his saddle (has succeeded once when javi was distracted by a story being excitedly told by kieran), and will also spook and take off running so fast javier thinks it must have broken his neck from the velocity. generally makes trail rides a living hell, but kieran finds it charming, and it makes for some cute shoujo-style “omg … *reaches out to help you up after your horse bucks you off because he saw a log that looked nothing at all and everything like a cougar and pink and white soft bubbles surround me* are you okay ? here, let me help.” moments. maybe some day boaz will be allowed off of the national american terrorist list written by javier “rizzless rider” escuella

It didn’t take Slumber Party too long to adjust to her new home. She had spent most of her life in the orphanage so it did take a bit for it to sink in, but it was a positive change. She had her own bedroom! She didn’t have to share her meals anymore! She had everything she could possibly want and more!

It was like she could just be a filly now; now that she had a guardian to care for her and her siblings, she didn’t have to be the one to be tending to everyone’s needs. Nurture was still in her nature and it always would be, but it was more of a choice than a survival need now.

But she still had plenty of fond memories of the orphanage. Even if she was eternally grateful to have a home, she did miss the many friends she made there. Looking around at the blue and purple decor of Luna’s mansion, she couldn’t help thinking of one of her oldest friends.

“Witch Hazel would really like this place!”

“Witch Hazel? Pray tell, who is that?”

Her adoptive mother Luna asked, her curiosity piqued by the name Slumber mentioned. Filled with love and awe for the three foals she adopted, she was absolutely thrilled to get to know them, and here was another opportunity.

“Is she your friend?”

“Yeah! We go way back!”

Slumber smiled nostalgically.

“It’s been awhile since I’ve seen her. I wish we could catch up, I wonder how she’s doing...”

Then she got an idea.

“You know a lot of ponies, right? Maybe you can help me find her!”

Luna knew almost nothing about this filly, but with the way Slumber’s face lit up when she talked about her, she was instantly on board.

“Surely I can try my best.”

She picked up a quill and some paper.

“Can you tell me more about her?”

“Oh of course! We were in the same orphanage together! She was about my age now when she got adopted, I wanna say seven or eight years ago? I don’t know who her parents are or if she’s still there now but I think she went to Vanhoover. Or was it Fillydelphia? It’s been so long, I don’t know anymore!”

Slumber was talking a mile a minute and anypony else would have struggled to keep up, but Luna was diligently writing down every detail, even if most of them were vague. It was clear her daughter had a mission and she was devoted to helping her achieve it.

“...Anyways, I really miss her and I know she’s out there somewhere, I just have to find her. Oh!”

Slumber stopped and chuckled sheepishly.

“Sorry, kinda rambled there. You get what I’m saying though?”

Luna showed her the pad of paper.

“Every last word.”

“Oh wow! You really kept up with all that!”

Slumber then sighed wistfully, becoming pensive again.

“I know I don’t remember a whole lot about where she is or who adopted her. I remember our time together crystal clear! Just not the stuff that would actually help me find her.”

She shrugged

“Oh well, it’s a nice dream to have!”
