Also just finished watching a video that made me ACTUALLY ANNOYED at the guy who made it and like. ok if you don't want a story told through Minecraft that is made through the lens of content creation in ANY capacity then don't??? watch stories told through Minecraft????? Cuz like. they're mostly like that; even parkciv which is still good IS done through a content creation viewpoint — either as a parody on the medium it was being told through (scripted Minecraft content/Minecraft storytelling) or just as a result of telling the story and like. needing to pay the bills or whatever is a bit up in the air I guess BUT STILL. don't sing praises to a series that's GREAT in all cinematography aspects that JUST SO HAPPENS to be told through Minecraft all the while you're saying "oooh Minecraft storytelling shouldn't be scared of being called cringe just bc it's embracing roleplay to tell it's narrative, it shouldn't pretend to be non-scripted when it so clearly is" which true, JUST TO THEN critique parkciv for...

From what I understand, the series the guy was singing praises to like it was his own child at the local school's dance recital, Whitepine (which I'm currently watching so I'll just come back to this once I've finished — let's see if I'll eat my words [doubt it]) is GREAT in terms of visuals, audio and the likes — it obviously takes great care in forming its atmosphere and from the little I've seen the youtubers are genuinely being actors, not just their normal selves masquerading as characters (something that, admittedly, happens A LOT in scripted Minecraft content/Minecraft storytelling like SMPs or solo series [I'm looking at you, later half of the DSMP]). But it isn't Minecraft storytelling — in my opinion, at least.

Minecraft storytelling implies that it includes Minecraft and its mechanics in some way, shape or form that becomes impactful to the story that is being told — it isn't just a REALLY good story that just so happens to use Minecraft as its movie set. This, ultimately, is why I think the guy was wrong — not necessarily in the idea that the stories he critiqued had more room to grow (which parkciv at least does. I haven't watched ParrotX2's Unstable Universe videos and I don't really plan to; they're not my thing) but in what "Minecraft storytelling" should strive to be.

I have a vivid memory — trust me, this is related — of when I was younger (they say, like she's an octogenarian instead of not even being halfway through his lifetime. anyway) having played Minecraft Murder Mystery with my friends in the playground bc I really REALLY liked Gona89's video series on it. This is like, not really the same storytelling but they did have a sort of story — the chemistry between the youtubers felt like watching a series of characters interact with one another, and certain jokes from one video would seamlessly move into the next as well.

And y'know what? IT DIDN'T FUCKING WORK — playing the thing in the playground, that is. Because the thing wasn't made for that; stories have their medium of expression because they're tailored to it, or the medium is tailored to that story — if your Minecraft story can be told perfectly fine when divorced from its primary medium of expression (Minecraft), then it's LITERALLY not a Minecraft story: it just happens to use the game as the backdrop

... Kinda like The Lego Movie: a lot of the mechanics within the movie CANNOT be divorced from lego that easily BECAUSE it's a fucking LEGO MOVIE — partially related but not really the point of this rant: this is why A Minecraft Movie's trailer fucking FLOPPED. It showed absolutely NO POINT in being made bc it's NOT a Minecraft movie (pun accidentally stumbled upon but I shall confidently roll with it, actually), instead it JUST SO HAPPEN to use the videogame as its set.

TLDR: IF YOUR STORY DOESN'T INCLUDE MECHANICAL ELEMENTS THAT ARE INTRINSICAL TO THE GAME YOU USE TO TELL IT, THEN SAID GAME IS JUST THE FUCKING SET. IT'S NOT A MINECRAFT MOVIE JUST BC IT HAPPENS TO BE RECORDED IN MINECRAFT FOR FUCK'S SAKE

if you like the book, great! that's awesome! love that for you! i am genuinely glad that you were able to find good in it and enjoy it!!

but not everyone did, and not everyone is going to agree with you. so, instead of going on some grand crusade where you find every single post that includes anything even remotely negative or negative adjacent or even neutrally critical and spending ALL this time and effort trying to provide unwanted rebuttals to every single thing, maybe you should just stay in your lane and find people who DO like the book and chat about it with them.

being critical of something and pointing out it's flaws is NOT inherently hating on it. i, frankly, do not know where people got that notion, but it's not fucking true so can we fucking quit assuming it is? and, critiquing something is also NOT the same as saying this is shit and it sucks and the author is a piece of garbage. again, where the fuck that came from is beyond me. you can be critical of something and still enjoy it. as soooo many of you love to point out, it's not perfect, why should it be perfect? so D U H. of course that means criticism can and should arise???

also. hot take (by which i mean ice fucking cold because it's NOT a fucking hot take), but going around toting FALSE facts as part of your "defense" does not make you or your argument look good. you, like the author, should maybe do a basic fact check first. 🙃

tldr, if you like the book, that's genuinely great, but stay in your fucking lane and stop seeking out posts from people who didn't like it to start shit in the notes.

sometimes the way the usamerican internet talks about lawns and touching grass reminds me that I grew up in a semirural, unincorporated, recently suburbanized forest without a monoculture lawn and a disproportionately huge backyard that had fruit trees and shrubs, wisteria, kudzu, poison ivy, poison oak, multiple species of clover, multiple varieties of grass, roses, holly, rose bushes, multiple species of venemous snakes, other wild fauna (raccoons, opossums, wild rabbits, snapping turtles, squirrels, birds), azaleas, multiple species of mint, other plants that I never identified, and a mix of pine and hardwood trees (until Hurricane Katrina, this included a massive wisteria girdled around a massive oak that was nearly horizontal (as in, the wisteria had partially uprooted it), non-girdled oak trees, pine trees, and a weeping willow tree). this was within the back and front yards; I'm not counting the neighborhood generally or the actual plotted gardens or the surrounding towns or nearby neighborhoods still in fairly dense forests (the domestic water supply reservoir that's also used for recreation has lots of alligators and there were white tailed deer and bobcats at the edges of my middle school).

anyway. that was growing up. now, I live halfway across the country in a densely populated city that's also biodiverse. idk, it's odd to me how geographically and bio diverse and massive the united states is and how few americans conceptualize it outside of a very specific flavor of suburbia.

I have a feeling that Sofia and Matt don`t like each other anymore. Sofia instagram dump of the cast had no photos of Matt and her ig stories as well. He did not even comment on the cast dump post or any of her posts since last year. I feel like they dated. It is kinda odd since they use to interact on socials. Just my opinion.

i definitely have sensed some tension between them because of the things you mentioned, although i think with the insta dumps it could also be bc matt was only on set for 3 episodes this season (at least that’s what i’m hoping bc i’m a girl who unrealistically wants everyone to be happy and get along). i don’t really want to speculate whether they dated or not because that’s not my business. i will also say that i’ve seen matt get SO MUCH hate bc of whatever happened which i personally think is just dumb since it’s not our business & we know nothing about it (fr tho i almost cried reading some of the stuff people said about him).

i’m not gonna take sides or anything bc i love them both and idk what happened but it is really sad if something did happen between them because their friendship was lovely. i also think that people should stop hating on either of them if they are because we shouldn’t hate on either of them if we haven’t even told what has happened (and i doubt we will bc it’s probably something personal). i also don’t get why people are hating anyway bc we KNOW how hate affects people from the drivers license drama which was somewhat hsmtmts related

sorry for the ramble but that’s my opinion on it. to summarise, i find it sad that it seems they don’t like each other anymore and also a gentle reminder to people to not jump to conclusions about whose in the wrong when you know nothing and to spread love not hate! <3
