Might as well add onto this cos I want to highlight some very, at best, misinformed and at worst intentionally deceptive, 'critique', courtesy of @sharkface from the notes:
"It is incredibly funny that anyone thinks RWBY likes women when 90% of the plot is ushered forward by the actions of men while the male showrunners just have the women talk about their feelings." "RWBY wants to like women but the writers do not care about women and they refuse to understand them in any deep context so their attempts at writing good female characters ultimately fall flat. I think this aspect has improved in recent seasons but it majorly held it back until like, season 8, I'd say. Season nine probably liked women the most."
To put it bluntly, he negatives are blatantly wrong and the backhanded compliment near the end is, well backhanded given the aforementioned wrong-ness .
Now, what follows won't be an exhaustive list or overall analysis and I will bounce between addressing just one point or two but:
Trailers/Episode 1:
Weiss Schnee rebels against her abusive father and overcomes a rigged 'test' to force her way into attending the academy of her choice so she can be out of his reach and begin her work on eventually overcoming him.
One of the fun things about Weiss is that rather than a typical "Ice Queen" archetype, she's actually quite aggressive and blunt and not that great at social cues. She also has zero interest in following her fathers lead or otherwise pleasing him, as in, she doesn't need to be made aware he sucks, she figured that out on her own. What's more, rather than her "Tsundere" nature being an archetype its a reflection of how her fathers abusive parenting and the environment she lives in has left her with a lot of emotional baggage. Being in a safe and supportive environment does a lot to ease Weiss's anger and temperament while letting her better move forward. Which is a much more interesting way to discuss these archetypes than just "She's hot then she's cold!" Plus, her story in regards to Jac is very much about establishing and later reclaiming her own agency and freedom in defiance of her abuser. Followed by pulling the family he ruined, IE her family, put of his sphere of influence and getting to have him taken down and arrested too.
Blake Belladonna saves the crew of a cargo train when her groomer & abuser Adam Taurus reveals he plans to kill them all with explosives. Then begins applying to the academies for the express purpose of dedicating herself to the cause of bettering the world.
One of the interesting things about the way Blake's trailer is structured and framed was covered in the commentary. Namely, that the trailer did not really become "Blake's" until such time as she defied Adam and escaped from him. As in, the man's actions driving and controlling her narrative is thematically and narratively a problem that she overcomes within the trailer, in order to reclaim her agency from her abuser. Which starts off her six volume arc of recovering from his abuse and overcoming Adam, crushing his ambitions and reclaiming the organization he corrupted. Before finally laying him low in battle alongside her partner and narrative foil Yang.
In Yang's trailer she defeated a gang in single combat while on a personal mission to uncover why her mother had seemingly abandoned her as an infant.
This is in of itself less of an arc for Yang and more a backstory & major plot beat that is still paying dividends currently. IE, her seeking out Raven alongside Ruby after Tai became a non functional mess of a parent and the danger she & Ruby faced left a powerful impression on her character. One she used to help Blake from self destructing in Volume 2. Seeking out Raven is in of itself a red herring as she later only does so because it serves her strategic goals and helped set up their confrontation in the Vault in Volume 5 that saw Yang secure the Relic of Knowledge. A Relic that Ruby would later use to uncover Ozpin's lies. We also know that there's far more to Raven than we realized thanks to V9's reveal of her & Summer's secret mission. So while Yang's trailer didn't set up her own personal story arc, it did involve her having agency, skill and set up Raven as a major lore figure who while not the end goal of Yang's character would be a major player in her own right.
Ruby Rose sabotages the villains robbery, & because of this & her mothers silver eyes she's invited to attend Beacon early by Ozpin.
So far this covers three trailers and the first episode & the only none antagonistic lot action ushered forward is Ozpin inviting Ruby to Beacon early. Which, still relied on Ruby's actions an agency, rather than anything put into motion by him. What's more, Ozpin's influence on the story & cast is expressly a narrative hurdle for the women in RWBY to overcome. IE, Ozpin tries to fill the archetypical roles of "Big good" and "Mentor", but his methods are ultimately extremely damaging for everyone involved and not all that effective. He lies and manipulatives. It is in challenging Ozpin, in not letting him control the narrative that RWBY as a team gain more agency. To the point where in volume 6, Ozpin's secrets are all revealed and he full on abandons them. Thus leaving Ruby as the one effectively leading the fight against current main villain Salem. This is a role Ruby had already been filling in the earlier volumes to varying extents given she & her team running around uncovering enemy plots. But early on this was enabled by Ozpin as part of his efforts to groom the team into his future agents which if it had succeeded would have indeed left their plots under his influence but it very pointedly did not. What's more, Ruby stepping up and taking the lead also happened without Ozpin's aid or influence following volume 3 and when it all came out in V6, he's never reclaimed that spot. Ruby has remained the central lead character as far as the story goes when it comes to fighting Salem and leading the overall charge narratively. The immense pressure this puts on her, in part also because of how Tai, Qrow & Ozpin all projected onto her or gave terrible leadership advice is central to her overarching character arc. Something which was in large part aided by the Blacksmith, not a man. but a woman as well. With Ruby's progress also being embodied by her wrecking the utter shit of a powerful foe along side her team while Jaune only got to watch.
But rolling back let's cover some other major events, though I'd also like to note that Weiss, Blake, nor Yang's stories are actually resolved, I merely covered the arcs they were set up for at the start and their early conclusions and themes not all that comes after.
Anyway, in Volume 1, Blake & Weiss have drama in the team & Blake uncovers the White Fang's alliance with Roman Torchwick & that they are actually behind the Dust Robberies. The only thing a man did here beyond served as an exposition sponge was provide Blake intel on a Dust delivery.
Volume 2,
All of the plot related villain actions are put into motion by Cinder who herself is put into motion by Salem, so I don't need to really discuss their side of things at all, but still.
Beyond that, its Blake who pushes the team to investigate the criminal conspiracy n Vale, with Ruby finding out Penny's artificial nature, uncovering where the White Fang is based and there's a big cool mech battle. The only roles the two guys play is to be exposition sponges & comic relief, not even participating in the fight.
RWBY & co do get enabled on their final secret mission by Ozpin but as noted, this is a problem in the overarching narrative. Also his aid wasn't necessary as they were already strategizing how to get where they wanted to go without him and its made expressly clear in the narrative they would have done so with or without his help.
Their actions end up forcing a major part of the villains scheme to activate early and be stopped by them & other Hunters, which does a great deal to preserve the Kingdom of Vale.
Volume 3,
This is the only only one I could say where they lack agency but so do all the men as everyone is dancing in Cinder's palm. Though we do see more of how Ozpin's methodology is a mess thanks to the sheer mental strain the isolation and cult-ish atmosphere puts on Pyrrha.
Volume 4,
Ruby leads team RNJR towards Mistral to track down Cinder and stop her villainous schemes. The fact her Uncle Qrow was in part involved in this is again, a narrative hurdle to overcome, as his secrecy and methods make things worse & Ruby is the one pressured to fix things. She also dismembers Salem's chief assassin.
Weiss is trapped at home by her father, stuck with his mind games and holding her position as heiress over her head to try and control her. Ultimately her anger and defiance lead her to casting off his methods of control and escaping.
Blake returns to her home in order to recover from the trauma of the past volume, and also in the hopes that isolating herself will cause her team to hate her & thus mean Adam won't target them. The only major thing Sun does in this is serve as an exposition sponge and a lesser stand in for Yang regarding the subject of being hurt by association with Blake. IE, Sun got lightly stabbed, Yang lost her fucking arm, but neither one blamed her for it. It ends with her resolving to take back the White Fang from Adam.
I've done multiple essays in Yang's volume 4 arc so I won't go into much detail here. But I will say that Yang demonstrated all the skills her father was claiming o teach her in previous volumes. & that she very pointedly only left home out of concern for her sister while Tai remains hanging around the house not contributing to the plot.
Volume 5,
This is taking ages so to make it fast this will get more clipped:
Ruby's role as essentially leader is subsumed by a mixture of Qrow & Ozpin returning, this is again a narrative problem cos their methodology leads the team to being passive & then ambushed. This is called a part of a story arc.
Weiss got wrapped up in the above.
In contrast Blake is the one leading the charge in her narrative, redeeming her childhood friend Ilia, stopping Adam's coup in Kuo Kuana and rallying the people to save Mistral. Which she does, leading to the dissolution of Adam's militant faction and his fleeing in shame.
Yang, unlike Ruby & Weiss does not entirely fall in line with Ozpin, pressing and pushing him into revealing more info. Then when left to secure the Relic, cutting a deal with Raven that very much goes against what Ozpin would have wanted her to do.
Volume 6,
The issues of Ozpin leading hte narrative come in whole force and end in disaster forcing Ruby to pick up the pieces. Overcoming despair enducing Grimm world shaking revelations and a Kaiju to do so.
Meanwhile Blake & Yang are grappling with their burgeoning returning relationship and trauma. Which culminates in a massive and dramatic duel with Adam and ends with them killing the man who abused Blake and dismembered Yang.
Volume 7,
Ruby's still the one calling the shots for their team. Ironwood thinks he's controlling the narrative, but RWBY and co continue to do things on their own terms without consulting him. These actions leading to local rebel Robyn Hill being willing to help rally Mantle when the Salem's plan comes to ahead, Willow Schnee revealing to Weiss how Jac rigged the election.
It culminates in team RWBY fighting Atlas's "Elite Hunters" and soundly thrashing them, and also securing Penny, the new Winter Maiden, as an ally, sabotaging Ironwood's plans to flee into space and leave the poor to die.
Volume 8,
Again, the narrative is squarely in the hands of the women.
Robyn, even when in prison is working around the other characters various issues and determining how best to save Mantle rather than let toxic masculinity win. The Happy Huntresses are the one's keeping the civilians in Mantle safe.
Yang is as much the leader of her side team as Jaune is & they collectively save Oscar & Emerald from Salem. With Yang being the primary force of dramatic defiance. Ruby is keeping Penny's head above water and leading the charge to reconnect the worlds communication & warn them of Salem's coming, which she succeeds in. Winter Schnee betraying Ironwood als serves as the basis for them defeating and dethroning him, which stops him from nuking Mantle.
The major things done by men consist of, Jaune suggesting they split up to cover more ground. Ozpin providing some exposition and unleashing a magic bomb that really only serves to delay Salem for a cpuple of hours.
Ruby and co come up with the plan that lets them evacuate all of Mantle & Atlas. Even Penny's death, tragic as it was, is very much tied to women. IE Cinder delivering a fatal wound, and Penny's onw martyrdom complex which has led her to trying to sacrifice herself multiple times that volume already. The fact Jaune is he one to deliver the blow has nothing to do with him save the fact as the teams healer he was nearby when she was injured.
Volume 9,
This volumes already been acknowledged as good as was 8, but suffice to say, a slow burn saphic romance becomes canon in the most epic manner possible. The immense pressure put on Ruby to be this perfect paragon hero finally becomes to much, in large part because of another woman villain specifically targeting her & as said is overcome in part by the Blacksmith's trauma intervention. Weiss's future arc in Vacuo is being set up too.
Jaune's main role is to embody all the worst traits of himself, Ironwood & Ozpin. To be wrong about how the tree works, create distractions from Ruby's trauma by being way louder with his own issues than she is, and come up with a plan that while it did inconvenience the villain a bit did not win the the fight.
That came down to team RWBY.
So, barring serving as hurdles to overcome (Ozpin & sometimes Jaune), the men who "Usher the plot forward" are antagonist and villains who are themselves defeated by RWBY.
So yeah, thanks for attending my Ted Talk.

Who are you two favourite cats in each clan you're in? And why?
NettleClan:
Pansykit -
I think this one should have been pretty easy to anticipate, but I absolutely adore Pansykit. I've been so closely involved in her since before she was born and watching her growth through kithood alone has been amazing. Words cannot stress enough how excited I am to watch her develop through apprenticeship and see her gentle, kind nature grow. I think the relationship she has with Tansykit is great because they both foil one another so well. Pansykit mirrors Tansykit's cold, isolationist nature while Tansykit mirrors Pansykit's caring, sweet nature. They work so well as a duo, especially so when the twin aspect is added onto them. I have so much love in my heart for Pansykit. She is so perfect and I will die for her. @leafwhisker
Flickerclaw -
Okay I'll be honest and say I haven't always been a Flickerclaw stan. It was really easy to see him as a character through the lense of Spark, and it was ironically as Spark began to let go of his anger at Raven and Maple that I began to appreciate Flicker's unique and interesting arc. Watching his fish-out-of-water narrative, seeing those emotions as Raven gravitated away from him and left him with a similar sense of loneliness that he left Aspen with? SO cool to see, and its awesome to watch how that experience allowed Flicker to realize the faults in his own actions and reach out to Spark (and hopefully lter Aspen) to apologize. I really love the way hes grown up and how he had to learn the hard way that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. I can't wait to see more with him regarding Hawk and Daisy as well- that's going to be such a unique thing to see. @mintswhisker
JaggedClan:
Swallowstorm -
An answer that shocks no one- I fucking love Swallowstorm. I would jump in front of a moving train for her. I would give Swallowstorm my left kidney. I love Swallowstorm. I've always had a soft spot for nasty girl characters and Swallowstorm is the nastiest girl there is. I'm heartbroken that I joined Jagged so late just because it means I missed out on a lot of her earlier development, but seeing her through the lense of Doerunner has honestly made her character that much more charming. I think Swallow's obsession with power and control is a really unique and captivating thing- I can't really think of another character that approaches this in a way as awesome and dynamic as her. The way she would go as far as to hurt herself and others around her just to keep that reality in tact for herself, the way she isolates herself just to tell herself the lie that it has to be this way because nobody else will understand, as well as to justify the way the cats closest to her have abandoned her/betrayed her trust. Her ego is too big for her own good, and to watch her repeatedly reach her breaking point, fall deeper into that dark mindset, only to place the limits of that breaking point further is so fucking awesome. I could honestly go on for paragraphs about all the subtleties I love about Swallowstorm, shes just genuinely so well written and dynamic and three dimensional. I'll be selfish for a bit and go on about how fun its been to reach out to that cold, broken cat through Doerunner, who's also broken but just in such a fundamentally different way. Seeing this relationship between Doe and Swallow where Doe tries to find her worth in befriending cats where Swallow finds her worth in pushing them away? So fucking GOOOOD. Especially when Swallowstorm is the one cat in JaggedClan who saved Doerunner, who literally kept her from freezing to death in the snow. Idk. Idk. I'm soft.
Mousetail -
My MOM. I love miss Mouse, especially because I'm one of the people who was lucky enough to see her shift from NettleClan to JaggedClan. To watch her go from lonely, angry, and hostile to the loving, gentle, and happy cat she is in JaggedClan has been such an awesome development to watch. I like how her happiness didn't come without a price- her scene leaving Crowstar behind, the way she's confronted Lavenderstrike after the way her kits were targeted, her overall apprehensive nature regarding her new clanmates is really nice to watch, her acclimation as a JaggedClan cat is slow and methodical and I like that a lot. It feels realistic and allows for a lot more growth and potential in the future. I'm really excited for her kits to reach six moons because there's so many more confrontations to see that are going to be absolutely great. I can't wait for Duststorm and Swiftstrike to meet her again, for them to view how far she's come in six moons, for Crowstar to see the way her family has grown, for Mottlepelt and her to speak again- there's a lot for Mouse to face in the future and I cannot WAIT to see how it goes. @currentfangs
The Tribe:
Butterfly -
Miss Butterfly.... my darling to-be. In the same way I'm soft on nasty girls, I'm also soft on characters with severe family trauma and Butterfly has that by the fucking BOATLOAD. The way she's been written through it all has been such a treat to watch, her using that obsession with the truth and being a well behaved, perfect cat to cope??? PEAK writing. I can hardly believe shes over a year old now as a character. I love the way she started fearful and anxious of the world because of how much it hurt her to a cat who, while still having some anticipation and fear, has a bit more confidence, especially through her relationship with Firefly and Spark. I just wuv her so much and I can't wait to see her function as an adult cat in the tribe! I can't wait to see her bond with her peers, meet Spark's kits, develop more with Butterfly and Fading. Shes a perfect little darling girl and I'll die for her. (Leo its not letting me tag you so I'll just DM you lol)
Aspen Snow -
Last but not least, miss Aspen. She's one of the first characters I got to develop a meaning, worthwhile relationship with. I've watched her go to an angry, spunky kid to a complex, hurt adult. She's an interesting look into a character who just can't seem to catch a break and is a great mix of a character who doesn't know how to pull herself out of her hurt. I like how over the course of time, she developed into a cat who's too closed off about her emotions while Spark became a cat who's open with his emotions to a fault. They balance one another out when they're together, but apart they both spiral out of control in opposite directions. Her complicated relationships with all her siblings really symbolizes how her horrible early on experiences leaves her inable to bond with them now in a healthy way. Her relationship with her season makes it so her emotions, so bottled up, explode in drastically unhealthy ways when they reach their boiling point and those instances only serve to haunt Aspen Snow and lead her to believe she's a worse cat than she really is. I want to see a healing arc with her SO badly man

Digimon Drabble Part 1
Fandom: Digimon Adventure (Specifically Adventure 02)
Summary: Daisuke (Davis) is starting to realize his feelings for Ken are more than what he thought they were. The 02 kids are all early college age.
Pairing: Daiken
Warning: Nothing (unless you care they're both boys, but seriously get out if it bothers you)
A/n: Have that OTP from your childhood that you didn't ever get over? Yea. I have a couple. This is one of them. I have always refused to believe that Ken married Miyako like that weird epilogue suggests when he and Daisuke have been each other's perfect foil and soulmate since the beginning. And maybe that's all it it. They're soulmates, whether that's platonic or romantic or what. They utterly complete each other. I just love them so much. For over a decade now I have started little fanfics for my boys but never got too far. This one I promised myself I'd finish. It'll be 3 parts I think. Mostly fluff all the way. First part is short, picks up a lot next time.
-----------
So Daisuke didn't get into the best of colleges. Still, with cram school and Ken's tutelage, he at least made it into one that was appeasing enough to his parents. Luckily for Daisuke this school was also very close to the prestigious university that both Hikari and Ken were attending. He didn't even care much for the idea of college, but it was something he felt a bit obligated to at least try. Plus, any excuse to rent a tiny apartment with Ken was a good thing in his book.
'Tiny' was an understatement really, as this apartment would be considered by some as downright minuscule, maybe even microscopic. It consisted of a closet that contained and toilet and shower shoved in to it. Luckily the shower had a curtain, because if it had a door like the shower at his parent's apartment that door wouldn't even be able to open without slamming into the toilet. It also had one skinny room that was a combination kitchen and living room. It barely fit a couch and had very little counter space. More than half of the space in their shared bedroom was filled by their two beds.
Ken called it 'cozy', which made Daisuke smile. Ken also pointed out how it was in a secure building in a nice neighborhood of the city. Plus, opting for the teeny apartment allowed them to save up a little bit each month. They each had part time jobs, so money was still tight, but they functioned. Mrs. Ichijouji promised to bring them home cooked dinners from time to time, which also helped.
Sharing a space with his best friend, even if it was an incredibly small space was excellent. Daisuke trusted Ken unconditionally and couldn't think of any one better to share his personal space with. Plus, Ken was tidy and said countless times he didn't mind picking up after Daisuke if Daisuke would carry their laundry downstairs to the laundry room for him. Daisuke was more than willing to do this and maintain a cleaner living situation he would ever be able to manage on his own.
This way they could also bring demiveemon and minomon into the house with out worrying about what others might think. That alone was worth it.
Jun had told Daisuke, in a mocking tone, that living with your best friend always resulted in one of two outcomes. Either you begin to hate each other after spending too much time together or you end up sleeping together. Daisuke laughed her off as always. Neither of those things would happen. Their bond was already way too strong to be broken by petty roommate fights and in it's own way, even stronger than most bonds of couples in sexual relationships.
One night, a couple months into the school semester, Daisuke came home late from work to find Ken, Hikari, and some woman Daisuke had never met all slumped together, having fallen asleep on the small couch. Their school work was scattered across the little table in front of them. He was taken a back at first. Ken wasn't particularly comfortable with physical contact. As far as Daisuke had ever seen the only person Ken was that confident enough around was himself. Ken was leaning against Hikari with his head on her shoulder as she leaned against the arm of the sofa with one arm draped over Ken's legs. The other girl was making less contact but still needed to be pressed close to Ken in order for them all to fit on the couch together. The sight made Daisuke upset.
He couldn't explain it. He had gotten over his crush on Hikari years ago. It wasn't that he cared who was close to her. He cared that they was so close to Ken. Ken was his. Not that he owned him. Heavens, he didn't feel like he owned Ken, but he did feel like Ken was supposed to be his friend. His best friend. His digivolve partner. His...something...special.
Turning away from the scene, Daisuke went to the bedroom slamming the door more than he needed to behind him. Falling onto his bed not even bothering to get under the blankets.
The next morning Daisuke woke up even more confused. Not only did he had the weirdest dream about Ken. He also found himself still sleeping on top of his own bedding, but warm beneath one of the blankets from Ken's bed.
He trudged out of bed slowly making his way to the kitchen when he noticed the living room picked up neatly and both Hikari and Ken no where to be found. Thursday meant early morning classes for them. Luckily, it meant only afternoon classes for Daisuke. So he went about making coffee and showering leisurely.
Daisuke wasn't one to be lost in his own thoughts. He didn't like to dwell on things, he liked action. But this morning he found himself in a trance as he wondered the apartment getting ready for the day. His mind was racing a million thoughts around all at once.
He shouldn't have been so...jealous...last night. Was he jealous? What is jealousy anyway really? Maybe he was just feeling some residual feelings for Hikari. Or maybe he just wasn't used to seeing Ken be so comfortable with someone else. That was a good thing right? Ken needed to open up, to not feel so guilty around other people. He needed to make more friends. Right?
Yet, Daisuke felt oddly miserable.
His two classes went well enough. When he was leaving the school he noticed a group of familiar people by on of the front gates. Hikari and Ken obviously, having just gotten out of classes themselves. Also Takeru and that girl from last night. She spoke to the group excitedly for a minute before waving the goodbye. She offered Ken a shy smile before she turned and zipped out of sight. Daisuke felt a strong urge to growl.
Takeru was actually the first to notice him, waving Daisuke over in their direction. They told of their plans to grab take out and go over the Yamato's place for dinner. Ken even seemed excited. Normally this all would thrill Daisuke, but he wasn't feeling it tonight.
"Sorry I have a lot of homework to do. I should get home." He lied through his loud cheery voice.
Hikari smiled and told him it was alright. Promising to get together really soon.
Daisuke started to make his way down the sidewalk towards the train entrance. "Hey wait up" a voice called out to him. Turning he saw Ken jogging up to him.
"Your're not going with everyone else?" He questioned.
"Apparently not. " Ken answered softly before giving Daisuke a look he used when he knew Daisuke was lying. Ken always knew.
'What?" Daisuke asked in faux innocence.
"You don't have homework to do." The raven hair boy remarked. Giving Daisuke a pointed look.
"Sure I do!" Daisuke insisted.
"That you actually plan on doing?" Ken countered with a little smile.
Daisuke looked over at him and watched Ken's little smile widen as Daisuke shook his head 'no'. They both laughed lightly as they entered the train.
When they got back to their little apartment, Daisuke sighed happily. He was glad to see the sight of an empty couch. Still, he made his way to the bedroom with out a word. Ken watched him go silently. Daisuke wasn't acting terribly out of sorts today, but it was obvious something wasn't normal today. Daisuke was typically a honest guy, little white lies were not even his thing. It was odd to see him not only turn down an offer for dinner, but to lie about it too.

Will be continued. Thanks

Whaaaa have u finished s5?????!!!! THOUGHTS???
i mean overall, critically speaking, it was probably one of the best single seasons of any teen tv show i’ve ever watched. like top 10, up there somewhere with buffy s2. the plot was tightly wrought, most things that happened made sense (which is something i’ve learned to let slide with this show), and every character had a reasonable motivation for doing what they were doing. granted, the bar was painfully low after s3 and 4, but i think if i picked up this show at s5 without seeing any of the prior seasons i still would have loved it.
THAT SAID, because i have seen the rest of the series, some of the OOC elements bothered me. i only saw a few glimpses of clarke’s history as the great wanheda (that quick knife to niylah’s throat? NICE). i didn’t like that all of her motivation had been reduced to motherhood when we’ve seen her in the past as a leader and lover and fighter and healer. BUT i also really loved the clexa moments, which didn’t feel cheap at all to me, and made clarke’s relationship with madi much more interesting after several cringey moments of “i’m willing to torture you to protect you.” similarly i didn’t like that abby’s character was reduced to her addiction and that guided everything she did. i like addiction narratives, but only when they’re not a plot device, which this very much was.
conversely, i think bellamy became more complex somehow, and his arc made sense -- he had six years in space to think on shit, and that changes a person. he continues to be probably the only truly trustworthy character on the show (i mean trustworthy to the audience) because his sense of loyalty is consistent and overrides all other traits, and his conflict (like captain america’s) always involves the compromise of his loyalty. in the case of this season, the people he’d spent six years with, or his sister, who is only a shadow of the person she once was. bellamy remains one of my favorite television characters of all time. (also note, i LOVED his fight scenes this season -- i can’t tell if it’s bob or the choreographers but all of them were really beautifully done, and it was a refreshing change of pace to not see him constantly beaten down every other minute. his face was only bloodied in one episode all season!!).
BELLARKE?? the bellarke moments were so good and so infuriating. as much as i appreciated them, i just kept thinking about what the show would be like if they’d gone canon at different points earlier on, and how that would make their relationship so complex. if they’d been together during praimfaya and bellamy spent six years thinking she was dead. if they had the same ride-or-die loyalty of monty and harper or the passion of murphy and emori, and how much more interesting that would make the show and the characters and -- well, i also firmly believe that any romance arc shouldn’t stretch over 5 seasons, so at this point it’s looking more like a gimmick to keep people watching, and i think if it were really confident in its quality, it wouldn’t need to use slow burn romantic tension to engage its audience. too much build-up ruins the breaking point, ya feel? five seasons is enough.
anyway. raven, sadly, never gets a character arc in order to let her either grow or shrink because, being the engineer, she’s always forced into a function of plot. in every season, her job is to move a machine from point A to B, and her obstacle is always physical torture. it’s a shame because i think lindsay’s performance is so good. i dug zeke’s character and their romance, though, so i hope to see more of that in s6.
and murphy. wow. for the first time we get an actual internal arc. even if it’s as blunt and heavy-handed as a brick, murphy had no clear-cut external goal, and everything about his growth this season was his internal acceptance of usefulness and heroism. as i type this i’m seeing a pattern, though, because emori, despite having a very interesting potential arc as grounder-turned-engineering-apprentice, was reduced to a function of murphy’s self-realization. i would have liked more development for both characters, because i think they were really close to something epiphanic that never got fully formed and had the potential to advance the moral cornerstones of the story.
ugh, echo. fuck echo. i think the only way she could be redeemed to me is if she showed bellamy the same loyalty she had once shown roan, and bellamy, rather than turning that loyalty romantic, would have dismissed it as being forced and toxic and destructive, so echo would be forced to actually consider herself as an individual rather than a member of a unit. but everything about their relationship was so sloppily done, and i found myself looking away whenever she was on screen. (which is not at all about the performance, which, again, was stellar.)
monty and harper provided a fraction of a wider perspective toward fixing what i think is the ultimate problem of the show, which is that the writing seems grossly unaware of its own moral assumptions. and maybe i’m projecting because i recently got that same feedback from an author i really admire (and he was right) but i may have internalized it so much i see it in other things now. monty and harper provided a much-needed “we don’t have to participate in this, and there are other solutions to be found” pacifist perspective which really helped round-out the season and provided a breath of fresh air to an otherwise exhaustingly dark plot.
diyoza? stellar. perfect. wonderful. 10/10. a competent, lawful neutral to act as a foil to octavia’s chaotic neutral leadership. i liked that she was pregnant, but i disliked that her motivation and mcreary’s weakness was reduced to their feelings about that pregnancy, so it felt like just a gimmick to manipulate the plot and tip the scales against mcreary.
kane is always fab, but i’m biased because i think henry ian cusick is the second best actor on the show. i wish he was more coherent as a character. as it stands he’s just kind of silly putty that gets formed into whatever he needs to be. i would be SO HERE for a kane/diyoza/abby triangle (which i would turn into an OT3 immediately). the daddy vibes this season were great.
one of the most understated characters has always been indra, played by the best actress on the show, adina porter. this season i really adored her relationship with gaia. i don’t think i’ve ever seen a mother/daughter relationship as formal and loving as theirs, and how it seamlessly encompassed their respective love/worship of octavia. they’re a good example of characters how further the plot but also get to be actual characters. idk why it’s so hard for this show to figure out the difference between plot devices and characters but it’s really hit or miss.
aaaaand then there’s octavia. i was pissed earlier in the season that jaha was killed off just for the sake of landing some leadership advice, because i really liked jaha’s character and (like many of the more competent characters who are put into the hands of incompetent writers [see: lexa]) thought he’d been poorly utilized the past 3 seasons. i don’t get why octavia was the leader at all?? like, kane, indra, abby, and jaha were all more qualified, and they were all in the bunker together. i think there was supposed to be some commentary on charisma and loyalty or something but it got lost in the heavy-handed “we do what it takes to survive” and “we pursue violence for peace” rhetoric that oversaturates the entire show because jroth can’t think of anything deeper or more meaningful to say about the complexity of being (and it’s what will probably get the show canceled in the next year or so -- no growth in moral reasoning = no new drama to be found). the only part that really sold me was octavia’s decision to shoot the people who refused to eat, even though i thought it was a dumb premise to begin with, because the flashback was well-placed and the performance was great, and it showed a genuine breaking point between octavia and blodreina.
if i had written the season, there were a lot of things i would have done differently (we get this ominous shot of the worms that doesn’t amount to anything, and a twist ending that felt cheap even if it was emotionally compelling), but in comparison to the prior seasons, i commended this season on not pulling its punches on the practical details like it’s always done (clarke eating windshield bugs to survive), threading in the consequences and details from all the prior seasons and the show’s own canon (abby using The Blight to motivate octavia into forcing everyone to eat), and overall slowing the fuck down (the entire season leads up to one [1] battle).
i don’t think the show will ever fully recover from lexa’s death, which decimated its fanbase and lost trust in the writing, but s5 put up a decent mulligan of s4 to wrangle the juvenile moral quandaries the show attempts to assert. if s6 can advance the philosophical implications of its own world, lose the “our people” bullshit jargon, and focus on the fucking characters which is the only reason anyone watches the damn show, then i think it could really be up there with the other cult faves like buffy and star trek and supernatural.

S7, E3 (continued rant)
Why the fuck did Dany's people get overthrown so easily? It kinda proves Tyrion right about a foreigner trying to invade a land they're unfamiliar with.
Man. It was hard seeing Yara captured while that piece of shit Theon escaped with his life.
The best thing about it, though, was seeing Jaime humiliated by Euron. I haven't forgiven him for being a shitty human being and I don't get why other fans have.
Then Cersi rapes her brother later . . . And they showed Jaime's ass? Well. At least they're taking steps toward equality. . . . Man gets raped while drunk, man shows ass = win/win! (In case you're that dense, I'm being sarcastic)
And they used the Sand Snakes to make us hate Cersi more . . .
. . . ugh.
Brown women are never allowed to weild power or . . . win. At anything in Game of Thrones. Ever. Brown women are just plot devices.
A brown woman would never get ot be Cersi or Dany. No. We are always Misandei or Ellaria or Namless Background Token #5. Regulated to the sidelines, used to make all the white women more interesting.
What hurts the most is knowing that the books are vastly different. D&D just don't give a fuck.
That aside, it was finally great to see Dany and Jon Snow -- the story's leading protagonists -- finally meet, fire and ice coming together.
Dany thought Jon Snow was crazy for going on about White Walkers, meanwhile, she's got THREE FUCKING DRAGONS.
I was glad when the episode addressed the absurdity of her acting like Jon Snow was nuts.
It was heartbreaking seeing Sansa reunited with Bran. From her perspective, Bran must be out of his fucking mind. Becoming the Three-eyed Raven totally changed him. He's a total robot now. When he saw Sansa, he barely had a reaction.
And yeah. I take back what I said about Bran being the only smart Stark. He's actually pretty dumb. His meddling with the past is why Hodor lost his mind and also probably why the Mad King went mad.
Bran is responsible for tearing apart his own world. Which is why I can't imagine why he would be chosen to become the new Three-eyed Raven. He's dumb and destructive and has a propensity for destroying himself and everyone around him, just like all the Starks. This was something the original Three-eyed Raven knew but chose Bran anyway?
Maybe he didn't really choose him. Maybe that's just the way it played out and he knew he had no choice but to embrace it.
"Give me ten good men and I'll impregnate the bitch"
That was gross, Tyrion. But why not use raping a woman as an analogy for invading a fortress? Women are castles. Why not?
And then all those Unsullied running through a tunnel that is symbolic of a woman's vagina being flooded with sperm . . . yeah, that was weird imagery I didn't need. (I can't wait til this season is over and I can fully abandon this blog.)
After hoping that Yara, Ellaria, and Olenna would not fail miserbly in my last few posts, you can imagine that this episode really sucked for me.
But at least Olenna got a really great final scene. It was so awesome to see her admit to Joffrey's death and the look on Jaime's face . . . priceless.
Also, it was hilarious to see everyone on the show saying what I'd just said on my blog, like, an hour before the episode aired: Dany's not perfect, but Cersi is worse.
Cersi is pure evil. Lol. When Jaime defended her, I thought "You fool." And then Olenna said exactly what I was thinking.
For a split second, I had actually hoped that Brienne would help Jaime break away from Cersi and break out of his love-blind devotion. Oh, boy, was I wrong.
What was the point having Jaime and Brienne kinda sorta start a romance????
I guess Brienne functions as a foil for Cersi, to show how evil she is and the man Jaime could be when away from her influence.
Too bad. As much as I hate Jaime, I do love a good redepmtion arc, and it would have been pretty great to see him turn his back on Cersi in favor of Brienne.
Ah well.
As a side note, I still watch Rick and Morty, even if I do have less respect for the writers, so all my rants about the show will be on my blog from now on instead of here.
Just too lazy to make a GoT blog, I guess.
