tagged by @18minutemajor for a hockey art share tag game! I enjoy talking about myself but am terrible at posting so this is perfect. i WILL talk too much, this is a threat.
rules: post your first ever hockey art, your latest hockey art, and your favourite hockey art, then tag three hockey artists.
FIRST ART
Tumblr media
I made the Kraken Orb (Korb) at the end of the 22-23 season, as a commemoration, although a sort of ironic one considering i had only gotten into hockey in time for the playoffs so there are a couple players here i actually never got to see play at all before making this (Joonas, Jaycob, Burky, Fleury)
it was a whole lot of fun though! Prior to this i was in a months-long art slump after leaving a fandom, so it was a total surprise to have hockey of all things be what revitalized my art.
technically, the very first hockey art from this was Matty; you can kinda tell by the way his lines are a bit thicker than the rest since i wasn't in my groove yet. i also knew coming in that i wanted to arrange the faces in a circle, but didn't plan out beyond that, so i just made sure that i was getting a variety of head directions in my references and hoped for the best. My favorites from this are Gru, Soucy, Dunn, Schultz, Borgen, and Eeli. I think they all turned out really well.
LATEST ART
Tumblr media
MEAT CUT MEAT CUT
this one is fun for me because it's quite different from my usual style of art, with lineart and non-realistic forms/face. I've had the concept in my head for awhile after hearing/reading so many interesting descriptions of the physical qualities that good hockey players possess.
'Sacrifice the Body' actually came in mid-art when i had an epiphany doing something like driving my car or an activity similarly unrelated. Before that, it was going to be a lil heart drawn on the chest and the going contender for the label was 'Ferda.' which would've been great, but sacrifice the body just worked too dang well with the themes.
FAVORITE ART
Tumblr media
i mean, c'mon. it's gotta be this one.
my magnum opus, my white whale. it came out even better than i saw it in my head and i love everything about it. when i came up with the idea, i had TOTALLY forgotten that Climate Pledge has those giant windows, so when i set out to find references and saw it, it instantly made everything even better with LIGHTING!!!!
It was my first time drawing this kind of interior architecture and although there's definitely things i would do differently now, im so so proud of how it looks and turned out. I was also still drawing through my decade-old laptop at that point, so I had to split up the work on this into two files - i sketched everything, then worked ONLY on the bg until it was about 90% done, then made a flattened copy to open as a new file to draw the players on top of.
I also have a bunch of WIP shots of it in my drafts I guess I'll throw in here now!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
initial sketch to get down the composition before i remembered the window | lines of the building! i actually found a 3d virtual tour of CPA from before it was built which had the PERFECT angle, so i screencapped that and straight up traced the architecture. Ultimately, the scoreboard and the paint lines ended up getting moved around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
planning out my lighting in greyscale (i really need to do this more often, i struggle with values so much, alas) | in progress bg! at this point, the ice and the boards/glass were the only things completed. I eventually said 'fuck it' to being able to see the areas behind the stands like you could in all my references, and just put the people dots all the way up.
Now the most gut-wrenching part
THE TAGS
this is where me being bad at posting comes into play, because instead i just lurk and thats not great for forming connections HERE GOES
@ruinedcasket - it has been awesome seeing your art progress! would love 2 hear your thoughts about it
@rouzys - your kraken stuff is so pretty, love how you capture likenesses
oh god oh fuck everyone else i know has already been tagged fuck oh sshit

Witch jirou au ✨️
Ch 1
The house was amazing, jirou's grandmother left it to her for when she finished college. She moved into a nursing home once she took one to many falls, which scared her and her family. She decided to give her house to jirou kyouka as she'll need a place to live and settle down in. As the couple came inside, they put away their clothes and belongings in their respective drawers. They settle in for their first night as new home owners.
After all the moving around, the couple fell onto the couch, sweaty and exhausted. Denki looked to his girlfriend of three and a half years, he cracked a triumphet grin and said.
"I think we're done for tonight, right?"
Kyouka giggled a bit at that, "Of course, I don't wanna kill you." She gets up and tells him she's going to take a shower. He gives her a wink and a cheeky grin and turns on the TV to the local news channel. He would look for something else, but he's too lazy. The news talks about a string of disappearances. The victims seem to be young men, and with that, his morbid curiosity is peeked. He listens intently to the report as they go over details. At the crime scenes their were piles of fabric strung around everywhere. No hair or blood or anything they could use for DNA. The only other thing of note was a small silver dagger with amethysts embedded in the hilt. Denki felt a chill run down his spine he fit the description of some of these victims.
Jirou, in all her bathrobe glory, flipped the tv to another channel, which made him jump. "You'll give yourself nightmares." Now, an action movie was playing on the TV, one of denkis' favorites. "I already have dinner on the stove. It'll be a while, so try to relax." She said as she handed him the remote and went to the kitchen she had some soup in a pot and was reaching into the lazy susen to pull out some salt to help the flavor. She instead grabbed a ceramic bottle, and without thinking, she poured the inky black liquid inside the pot. Then she looked at the label, and oh fuck, krakens blood. She heard the shifting and squelching inside the pot, and denki heard it to because he asked. "Hey babe, you good in there?" To which, she responded, "Uuuh... yeah?" She grabbed the latle and used it like a saber along with the lid as a shield until she saw it, the salt. She reached out and grabbed it. However, one of the tendrils grabbed her wrist and forced her forward she was forced to drop the latle in favor of the salt. She was then throwing it around like a mad bat. After all of the tendrils had disappeared, and the soup ruined, denki rushed in panicked. He normally was like that after watching crime documentaries, and after that news report, she doesn't blame him.
"What happened?" He practically yelped. "I burnt the soup. It's inedible now." She finished. Denki walked over now calmer. "Oh, I'm sure it's not that ba -" he immediately stopped talking. The pot was half full of black sludge. Without missing a beat, he asks "how you feel about pizza?"
And how could she say no? They watched a movie and chowed down on pizza. When they retired to the bedroom, they snuggled into each other and went to sleep. Well, denki did. He was fast asleep while it took longer for jirou to fall asleep. As she drifted off, she made a mental note to ask tokoyami about these disappearances, and maybe asking midoria would help. For now, though she was going to sleep, she was exhausted after all the moving and the unexpected duel with the monster soup. She closed her eyes and focused on her boyfriends heartbeat, and drifted into sleep.
-
Ok, that's the first chapter of this seiris. I can't wait until I draw tokoyami in human form cause I've always wondered what he'd look like as a human.

Looking over material about groups, like free groups and word length, and realizing it all translates, which is something I realized last night whilst you were otherwise occupied. I sense your availability, which appears to mean the threads from your End shrink to a nearer to background level, in which it’s difficult to maintain connection, which seems to drift off, but is still there. Think of that as groups and the translation becomes any factoring across a gs constructed space because all those various factoring forms are in fact gs counting.
So last night, for example, I got a busy signal but also heard with solidity or weight of process attached that I could translate anything now, just need to find the path, which means finding the handhold, which typically lies in the definitions, because once I can see the basis, then I can tell you how gs construction explains or generates the path itself. This means we locate an End, which means we can locate Ends that project or infer out along pathways or threads, meaning we can explore to the limit of the larger understanding. I guess we just explained how the understanding process works. You can see I//I in it, the layering of meaning. Like when we use the label Is, that’s equivalent to the word, the group word, for Is, for that concept. See what I mean about translating? I didn’t know how to say that at 5AM, when I unleashed the Kraken. Or let the cat out. One of the two, I promise. It’s 16 Oct 2023.
I can still squat lower than before, so whatever broke loose seems to have been pulverized. What a great word. Jack Lemmon was Ensign Pulver. I would have cast him as a villain because he came off as so decent. Like a true psychopath who can feign well, especially if trained, to the more limited actor form. The first is that you is whatever you construct, while in the latter you are you and you take on roles. You can thus see the construction difference: one constructs self as a role, and the other constructs roles for the self. Wow, that was fun, wasn’t it? Immediately came out of a flash of sexual fantasy.
I’d say the best game must be mutual submission. It’s the game of love. It’s the game in which you must implant an image of yourself in the mind of the other. I finally get those ideas. That’s really deep. To implant an image of yourself, you must take in an image of another, which is a subject explored in great depth over years of conversations about the best ways to do that, all of which led to your Pathway.
So, the idea above, now that I’ve burnt off some of that positive rush, is that Is, which clearly is a word in every sense, is a word in the group sense, in the information carrying sense, in the Pathway sense. Same then with Not. Add in the basic conception of construction, that gs construct. This has so many implications, I truly don’t know where to start. I suppose the most fundamental might be that construction is finite within infinite process, because that generates concepts like Boundary, which link to topology, sets, nilpotency, and again more than I can list at 5:45AM on a Monday.
Also, to further the communication, at about midnight, as I headed to bed, I started to look up how permutation in groups works. That took me to the edge of the above. Woke up and it was there as soon as I started to feel your touch in me.
I think I’m going to stop for a while because I really don’t know if it’s possible to do better than this. Just translated the idea of an Is & Not calculus into an actual statement in regular mathematical conceptions, no sleight of hand, that it is in fact a calculus.

Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken/Meet the Gillmans vs Luca
Critics, Reviewers, Comment section, News outlets, etc.
TOP 10 things Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken/Meet the Gillmans copied from Luca.
Child: Mom can we watch Luca? Mom: We have Luca at home! Luca at home
Luca, but American.
DreamWorks’ Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken/Meet the Gillmans is just like Pixar’s Luca but with a girl.
What if Luca was a girl and it happens in Florida?
DreamWorks: Can I copy your homework? Pixar/Disney: Yes but change it a little. DreamWorks: Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken/Meet the Gillmans
It will just like Antz vs A Bug's life, Shark Tale vs Finding Nemo, or Megamind vs Despicable Me.
Tumblr media
(Art by F16 - Lift Those EyebrowsPublished: Nov 7, 2010By jbwarner86. It’s not her opinion! It’s just a comic.)
I'm going to be honest. I love DreamWorks movies, so I might be bias. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion. This is mine! I'm tired of everybody calling their movies ripoffs! Hollywood only cares about Disney and Pixar. They're the studios that get all the awards, except once in the blue moon. The media has many times shown bias towards Disney. Not to mention people who don't think of animation as art or think anything animated is made by Disney.
A movie can have a completely different animation, characters, tone, plot, humor, message, story arcs, execution, etc. But as soon as it shows even the smallest similarity with another movie that came out around the same time or worse comes out after it then it's labeled as a ripoff and if not it's constantly compared to its older film siblings.
Even Rise of the Guardians gets compared to Avengers because it came out around the same time, in 2012, and has characters that form a team to stop a bad guy. Seriously!?!
youtube
(That’s actually a fun parody!)
What's next? In this movie, people breathe, walk and talk it's just like the other movie where people breathe, walk and talk. Totally the same!
I get it. People want to describe a movie in the shortest amount of time possible without getting anything away and using a vastly popular movie that most people watched or is so prevalent that most know it in great detail even without watching the movie itself. But those descriptions are mostly misleading and are stretching a lot to find anything similar, as I previously mentioned.
There are hundreds if not thousands of things that go into the making of a movie and even changing one thing can make someone love, hate, or feel indifferent about it.
You might love Avengers but hate Justice League, love Cinderella but feel meh about Sleeping Beauty, and vice versa. They are what a lot of people would call ''the same movie'', ''similar movie'' or ''basically the same''.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, I don't think it's ever going to change. Not everybody has the time or wants to listen to hours of essays about why a film is great or bad, and it’s especially hard to praise something without getting into spoilers.
And I need to remind you that you have your own will, opinions, and tastes. It sounds pretentious but a lot of people seem to forget that. Even if the person describing a movie to you is someone with whose opinions you many times agreed or knows you personally and knows what you like and dislike or even you may think ''I hate - insert what you hate in movies here - ! No way I'm going to like this movie.'' and then you watch it and love it.
Everybody and their mother makes fun of Shark Tale on the internet but I think it's funny (Polish dub). Almost no one talks about Monsters vs Aliens in a flattering light but I love it. Everybody seems to love the Guardians of the Galaxy movies but I found them unfunny.
Tumblr media
Maybe I just didn't find those videos yet.
So, when you hear someone compare one movie to another take it with a huge spoonful of salt.
Can't wait when the Wizard of Once movie comes out and everybody will compare it to Harry Potter because it has magic and the main boy character has black hair.
Tumblr media
What movie do you think gets this unfair treatment?

*slowly opens door* hi...uhhh...I'm alive.
Alright so back to Squid House AU! This time about Lilith’s idol career.
Lilith Seathorne (gods the puns are killing me why did i do this?) is perhaps the biggest solo idol in Inkopolis, thanks in no small part to the sponsorship of Belo Ink. She has starred in movies, television series, a whole bunch of advertisements (all exclusively for Belos Ink. products and services), and of course has sang nearly non-stop since she arrived on the scene after winning the Singing Contest and beating her sister...by default since Eda quit...and was disqualified and labeled a public danger after she transformed into a kraken form outside of a turf war without any gear.
Which Lilith had nothing to do with of course, Why would you ask that? Hahahahahahaha
*Cough* Where was I? Oh yeah.
In short she absolutely hates it.
Not outwardly, publicly, no. Her managers would absolutely berate her for doing so. Just internally, privately, absolutely despises being a public idol. It's not a fun adventure filled gig she thought it would be.
She joined because she wanted to be the next Squid Sisters alongside Eda. To go on world tours, explore the world, and escape her little bubble within the city of Inkopolis. I imagine her obsession with history carries over here and she possibly also wanted to use her career to share her passion for history. Think David Attenborough but with shows about archeology or obscure history rather than nature documentaries, which was probably the direction she WANTED to go into with her career.
But that is definitely NOT what Belos Ink. wanted out of her. Instead of exploring the world she was kept in Inkopolis and forced to produce and sing EXACTLY what they wanted out of her. Which...was fine, because she was a big star now. With a lot of money to help fund whatever she wanted (as long as it was Belos approved, Branding, you understand? Can't have anything affect that perfect public image.)
I don't actually have any particular sound in mind for her singing career. So any suggestions?
So Products she doesn't even try, "Perfume that smells like the sea and salt? Whatever will those folk down at Belos Ink. think of next?" (It doesn't even smell like sea salt). Movies she doesn't really care for, "Her stone cold exterior brings a depth to each character she preforms as!" (she just didn't want to be there). Music she doesn't really connect with, "Top of the Records again with another Hit Single from Miss Seathorne" (it used to be fun singing with Eda when did it stop being fun).
Anyway, I'm unsure about what exactly she would be involved in. Since the "Golden Guard" is in a similar position, what with being Belos Ink.'s Top Model, but Hunter is also their private hitman and general scoundrel..."Its for the good of the company. You Understand?" and while that might work on Hunter, child clone soldier that he is...Lilith is...not that. Brainwashed and indoctrinated? oh yes. But not so much that she would be okay with crime. That works in canon because Belos and the Emperor's coven IS the government. In Squid House, Belos Ink. is a Company and a Business.
So I imagine Lilith is more or less completely in the dark about Belos Ink.'s darker motivations and dealings. While she herself publicly defends Belos Ink. because its all she has known since she won that Singing Contest and she is stuck dealing with the terrible TERRIBLE idol industry where her entire life is micromanaged and controlled. She doesn't realize that she is basically being abused because she is surrounded by luxury and kept so busy she is too exhausted to question anything around her.
Thankfully Luz and Eda cause such a public scandal and mess that they drag her into it and Lilith's unwillingness to denounce or abandon her sister as Belos Ink. wants causes her to be dropped as an Idol and blacklisted by Belos Ink...effectively ruining any chance Lilith has of working anywhere in Inkolopis. But that is fine! She has her sister again and a niece and nephew to spoil.

Connections - Intrulogical
Summary:  A world of various soulmate connections forming at different ages, The sides need to navigate each having multiple types of soulmate connections and finding each other. Remus and Logan have different ways of personalising their items after finding out their soulmate connection. They do manage to find each other from them at least.
Warnings: being kicked out of home,
Part of an ongoing daily DRLAMP story with each part focusing on 1 ship
/\/\
The notification was a reminder of Remus's favourite type of soulmate connection that he hadn't thought he'd ever get.  Soulmate dedicated theft. Alright, fine, some of Remus's things would be swapped with his soulmate's but he was used to losing things.
It caused a very busy morning for him also, making sure anything and everything that was his was painted, drawn over, or otherwise customised to be unique. He needed to be certain if he ever met the person who had these items. Roman had blinked coming into his room to fetch him for breakfast to see the extra chaos created in the room.
“Does this mean we have an equal number of soulmates now, or are you just trying to send Mum into a fit?” He asked, looking over everything and remembering which soulmate type could cause this reaction as well as happen on their 17th Birthday.
Remus grinned, his voice lilting as he replied, “Who's to say it isn't both? Or that I just wanna be and look special.”
“You look like a trash goblin and like it that way, Re. Besides we're going out for breakfast this morning. Try actually wearing clothes under your covering of paint.” Roman rolled his eyes, frowning as he realised the clutter around Remus didn't reveal if he'd bothered to get dressed yet.
“Will do Bro-man. How much do ya think the parentals will have to pay if I get paint covering something?” Remus called after him a he turned to leave.
The only call in return was “5 minutes if you wanna eat this morning.”
/\/\
“Would I be able to get personalised name labels?” Logan asked, looking up from the letter that had been slotted in amongst his birthday cards. He'd had a few items go missing in recent months, just as he'd found things he was sure nobody in his family would have. With the notification that had just been provided to him it all made some more sense and Logan was grateful to have already been recording when and where he found the pieces. While none of them gave any indications over who the person who had owned them was, they were all made unique in some form.
His father paused in passing some cereal to his sister, before nodding. “Of course Logan, is there any reason why so I know how many to order?”
“Apparently I have a fifth soulmate connection which involves items moving between us both. I believe if I've labelled the items with my name and perhaps my favourite subject then they should be recognisable if and when I encounter my soulmate.” He reasoned. “Perhaps a few storage boxes would be a logical investment also so I can store the items I receive from them.”
“We'll get those ordered today.” His father agreed, but focused on breakfast for the time being, as did Logan.
/\/\
Remus had known the day was coming when he would have a place like this. He'd hoped his parents would have lasted longer, left him in a position to be able to completely leave town, find work somewhere completely new and away from his family. It seemed like everything except moving would have been easier if that had been the case.
Even Roman was ignoring him now. They had shared their own harsh words and argument over the incident that finally pushed their parents to kick Remus out, but still went to the same school. Except Roman was invisible to Remus now, changing spots they used to meet up either because of their parents influence or lingering anger, Remus wasn't sure.
At least everything of his soulmate had come with him. All of the items were actually stacked together, slowly forming into a kraken sculpture that Remus swore would dominate his living space. Cradled in amongst the legs of the kraken was the plant he'd received on his last birthday too, the only item not directly owned by the soulmate he stole things from and had things stolen by in return.
Remus had painted a copy of his soulmate's sticky labels onto the front of the plant pot and changed the name to be 'Bristles' rather than L. O. G. It was simple enough to do when he had stared at the labels each time something new was swapped.
Also a simple thing to notice was when the man sat on the front row next to him had identical labels on his folders. He'd come to a lecture on experiments conducted on the international space station and had intended to learn everything he could.
That also left Remus stealing the folder as people prepared to leave the hall, shoving it up his shirt as the other bent to retrieve his bag.
“Excuse me, do you know where my folder went?” The man asked, turning to him.
“Do you have the item swap soulmate connection? Perhaps it went to them!” Remus countered, leaning close and leering.
The man took a step backwards. “That is a connection I have yes, but experience shows that my items do not disappear in such a way as you are suggesting. If you've picked it up then please return it to me.”
“Nope!” Remus decided after pretending to think for a moment. “I wanna know what you've been able to steal from your soulmate!”
“It is not theft. It is a soulmate connection recorded and which all participants are notified of as they turn 17 years old. You have taken my folder if the outline in your shirt is any indication and I'd like you to return it now.” He held out a hand as if waiting for the item to be returned.
“I think it'll look good as one of my kraken's arms. The label already matches, so no I'm not doing that.” Remus hopped up then, grabbing his jacket and turning as if to walk away.
A hand on his shoulder stopped him. “What do you mean the label matches?”
“I mean if I was playing snap with labels then this one matches those, Mr Log! And I'm going put this as the arm surrounding my plant. You can keep my jacket if you like. Seems like a trade that's happened before anyway.” Remus did turn to wrap his coat around his soulmate's shoulders, nodding at the confused glance going from him to the jacket.
He'd only got a couple of steps when he heard the reply. “That was last March 23rd, and it was actually a sketchbook of yours for the suit jacket I wore for a cousins wedding.”
“Damn, I haven't kept track of the dates that much, Mr Log. I'm Remus by the way.” Remus whistled, impressed.
“Logan, no need to try and make a name from my initial's any more.” He introduced before pausing. “Have you actually made a kraken out of my things?”
Remus crooked a finger inviting Logan to follow him, “Come and see it if you like.”

Voice and Style
an anon asked:
Do you have any tips for learning how to write in a different writing style?
and honestly i just went off the rails lmfao this is a long post, but hopefully it's useful. i wasn't 100% sure what you meant by style, but i assume you mean more along the lines of "voice" than the difference between like narrative, persuasive, etc. but let me know if you meant something else! what i'm going to do is 1) talk about voice in writing, 2) author voice vs character voice and examples, and 3) actually answer the question. i promise 1 and 2 are relevant to get to 3!
.
.
.
to start we need to break down what "voice" is. this is a term that gets thrown around a lot when people talk about writing, and i've heard people get a little heated about it lol but i'll give my take at least. there are actually two kinds of voice: the writer's voice, and character voice. we'll start by focusing on the former.
describing an author's voice is tricky, because it's largely subjective. some parts of it are concrete and easy to analyze, while others are down to the author's personality, perspective, and life experience. while it is something that you continue to hone as you gain experience, it isn't something you can measure or "rank" comparatively. so...what the hell is it lol
if we boil it down to the simplest components, here's what i think goes into voice: tone, syntax, word choice, and perspective. this isn't all that voice is, but these are the fundamental building blocks, and the way you use them is a mix of personal preference/affinity, your level of experience as a writer, and who you are outside of writing.
->tone is often described as the "attitude" of your writing, the mood you evoke with a combination of the other components. in "twelve moments in the life of an artist," david sedaris recounts his struggles with an attempt at an art career and a meth addiction, simultaneously. the subject matter is difficult and emotionally distressing, but because it's sedaris writing it, it's fucking hilarious. it's funny because of the tone, the ridiculous statements he makes, the witty observations and the flippant way he describes things. someone else could write the same story and make it a dramatic tragedy, but sedaris' tone is one of humor.
->syntax is the way a writer constructs their sentences. i know this sounds boring lol but it can play a huge role in a writer's voice. when do you use long and complex sentences versus short and simple ones? do you use repetition, and for what purpose? when do you use active or passive voice? for example, "the monster bit him" vs "he was bitten by the monster." these sentences mean the same thing but have a subtle difference in where the focus is. these might seem like small, insignificant details, but they can drastically change how a work sounds. the rhythm of your writing also ties into syntax.
->word choice is just how it sounds: what words do you use when you write? are you more of a "purple prose" type who likes flowery, detailed descriptions, or are you more sparse and "beige?" do you use certain phrases of colloquialisms?
->perspective is straightforward, too. do you like or have a tendency for 1st, 2nd or 3rd person? there's some variation in 3rd person, too, like omniscient 3rd or close 3rd. i think a writer's strength and preference in this, as well as when they deviate, also contributes to their voice.
but what about character voice? this is kind of similar, but limited to specific characters and how you portray them. it includes their dialogue and word choice but also their perspective or worldview, their opinions, and their personality expressed by their interactions. it's the kind of thing that differentiates characters speaking even without a speech tag to label them. there might be really extreme differences between character voices and the author's voice, depending on the character.
i always feel kind of narcissistic using my own work as an example lmao but i think changeling is a good example, since each passage is super focused on a particular character and their perspective. in first person, or close 3rd like this, a character voice can come out in narration. huntress sounds like this:
The hunt ends. Her catch, meager. Still, she will not waste it. Wolf Mother travels far to see the meat put to good use.
She walks the crossroads, strange paths through the strange world. Sniffs out the road she needs and steps through thick fog. Darkness gives way to orange autumn haze. Eternal harvest season. Blackened corn rots on the stalk. Machinery rusts in the fields. Bloated animal bodies decay in old barns. It is sad and stifling, the stench of forgotten things. And there—the farmer’s son. Lopsided boy. He stands on his porch, wiping blood and grime from his hammer. Distrustful, he watches Wolf Mother. Above, a slow-turning weathervane creaks.
her sentences are often short and choppy. the unusual syntax (the hunt ends. her catch, meager) gives it a feeling like a feral stream of consciousness. rotten corn, machine rust and bodies decaying are visceral, smelly descriptions because her sense of smell is especially strong and she relies on it to interact with the world. in contrast, ghostface sounds like this:
He’s hanging around Haddonfield when She comes calling, because he doesn’t have a realm of his own. Oh, no, no, no, of course it’s not a problem. He doesn’t mind at all, honest! It’s just, you know, he’s real good at this whole ritualistic murder thing. Got a knack for it, you might say. He was something of a professional before he ever got brought on board with an impressive résumé spanning most of the continental United States—not that he’s bragging, of course. He’s just experienced, motivated, highly-organized, versatile, and frankly, overqualified.
this is almost conversational. he's "hanging around," he's "got a knack for it," like the way you talk to a friend. his narration has a very informal and emotive vocabulary. he talks about his skill at murdering people like he's at a job interview, and he's extremely arrogant. my hope, as the author, is that all of this comes across and you get a strong sense of these characters just from brief passages.
finally, we can go back to the original question lol how do you write in a different "style?" i think you have to analyze different styles and voices, and figure out what you're going for. do you want to write something dreamy and surreal, or more dry and sarcastic? what tone are you going for, and how can your usage of word choice, syntax and perspective help you attain it?
i'm giving you homework lmao track down your favorite book and try analyzing the author's voice. take some notes on the tone, and if it contrasts the subject matter or genre (is it cynical? is it nostalgic? is it a lighthearted, fairy tale-esque fantasy or a more somber, gothic one?). also pay attention to the word choice. how vivid or descriptive is the prose? does it evoke certain imagery or themes? (in kraken by china mieville, a story about a giant squid that goes missing from a museum and the chaos that follows, he uses a lot of water and squid metaphors.) use the elements of voice listed above as a checklist of things to look for. if there's a certain writer you want to emulate or take inspiration from, studying their work like this could help a lot.
one last thing: since we talked so much about voice, i want to ask why you want to change your style. you can ignore this part if you want lol this is just a pep talk and something i think is good to mention. if you want to focus on differentiating character voices, or trying out a new style for fun, that's awesome! you can and should experiment with style, but remember that your voice as a writer is something unique to you. it's not something that you have to fundamentally change. we can all learn from other writers and hone or refine our style, but i think who we are on a personal level affects our affinity for certain stylistic choices that form our voice.
for example, on a scale of purple to beige, i lean pretty lavender lmao but i'm not ashamed of that! i was influenced a lot by writers who have a (capital R) Romantic flair to their prose, so i like flowery language and descriptions of nature. if it gets too purple and "in the way" of the story, then sure, i might need to trim down certain passages. but my affinity and tendencies aren't something i'm going to get rid of altogether, rather something i'll practice so they're super polished. once you identify your voice, i think you should embrace it and roll with it.

Umbrella Academy OC Masterlist
(I’ll update this with my own gifs as soon as I have the time/energy but I realized how out of date the old one was and had to fix it, as part of my bigger mission to update all of my masterlists)
Tumblr media
Name: Aiden Hargreeves
Alias/Number: 8, The Enigma
Story: My Way Home
Face claim:  Candice King
Power: Redacted
Tumblr media
Name: Alice Hargreeves
Alias/Number: 8, The Heart
Story: Six Impossible Things
Face claim:  Sophie Cookson
Power: Empathy
Summary:  On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began.   Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible.  He got seven of them.
And then, an eighth.  Five years after the mysterious births, Alice’s parents died in an accident, and she was quickly taken in by the billionaire.  Unfortunately, she turned out to be even more useless than Number Seven. An empath, not only were her powers useless, but they made her weak and unreliable.  On the day they turned eighteen, Alice parted ways with her siblings, moving across the country to become a licensed psychologist, using the same powers that had always been mocked.  She’s finally happy, when her father dies and she has to return home. But when Number Five shows up, not looking a day over thirteen, Alice has to help stop the apocalypse, and learn the truth about her own powers along the way.
Tumblr media
Name: Andrea Hargreeves
Alias/Number: 8, The Ace
Story: Running Just As Fast As We Can
Face claim: Crystal Reed
Power: Luck
Summary: On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth, you know the drill.  Despite being one of the miracle children, Andrea never felt like she was born lucky or lucky to be born.  Yes, having the power of good luck came in handy, but it also came with endless scorn from her siblings, and even from her father.  It meant never knowing if she deserved something or if she only got it because of her powers.  It meant being put through worse and worse torture every day of her life as Sir Reginald Hargreeves tested the limits of her powers.  It meant being lucky — unlucky, if you asked her — to survive the same mission that had taken Ben from her.  She was the one who should have died, but as luck would have it, the universe took Ben instead.
That was the final straw for Andrea, who left the Academy within the week.  She built herself a new life.  A successful life.  A life where she would never know if she had actually worked for, had actually earned, anything that she had.  She lost contact with her siblings.  She lost her family.  She lost herself.  And then her luck finally worked out well: Reginald Hargreeves was dead, and her long lost brother was finally home.
And the apocalypse was only days away.  Go figure.
Tumblr media
Name: Andromeda Hargreeves
Alias/Number: Number 6: The Echo
Story: Ghosts Of The Past
Face claim:  Nina Dobrev
Power: Power mimicry
Summary: On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began.  Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible.  He got eight of them.  Originally number Seven, Andromeda’s ability to copy anyone else’s powers should have made her number one, but she struggled to control it.  While theoretically she should have been able to mimic any power so long as she’d seen it used before, and to use multiple powers at once, Andromeda struggled to copy anything unless she could see the person whose power it was, and could barely handle one let alone multiple.
She’d long since stopped hoping to improve her rank when suddenly Ben dies, and Andromeda finds herself reappointed as Number Six, and the only power she doesn’t seem to struggle to use?  Klaus’ ability to see their dead brother.  Unable to cope with it, Andromeda travels halfway across the world, and the further she gets from Klaus, the weaker her mimic gets. Finally separated from her family, and the ghosts of her past, Andromeda is ready for her fresh start.  For over a decade she lives like she’s normal; no superheroes, no mimics, and no ghosts, but her father’s funeral forces her to return to all three - and now with the added bonus of the apocalypse.
Tumblr media
Name: April King
Alias: The Siren
Story: Siren Song
Face Claim: Cara Delevigne
Love interest: Diego Hargreeves
Power: Persuasion/Hypnotic Speech
Summary: In 1989, forty-three women simultaneously give birth, despite showing no signs of pregnancy prior to each birth. Seven are found and adopted by eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who raises them as a superhero team.  April King is not one of those seven, but she grew up only two blocks away from them.  She befriended Diego at a fairly young age, and by the time the siblings drift apart, the Kraken and the Siren are an unstoppable team.  But when April accompanies Diego to Reginald Hargreeves’ funeral, she finds herself caught up in the Apocalypse and, even worse, family drama.
Tumblr media
Name: Arya Bassi
Story: Ut Malum Pluvia
Faceclaim: Summer Bishil
Love Interest: Diego Hargreeves
Power: Redacted
Summary: When a twenty-four year old Arya Bassi first met Diego Hargreeves, she didn’t think anything of it.  He was just another bodyguard that her overly paranoid father had hired to protect his little miracle.  He would be replaced by the next event, and it wasn’t worth getting attached.  Only, the next event rolled around and Diego was back.  And then again, and again, and again.  For five years, Diego served as Arya’s bodyguard, best friend, part-time roommate, and occasional fake boyfriend.  The two went everywhere together, told each other things they’d never told anyone else, became two halves of a whole.  And then Reginald Hargreeves died, and Diego asked Arya to be his date to the funeral.
Going to unpleasant events as Diego’s date was hardly new to her, and saying no would never have crossed her mind, but usually he was the one responsible for protecting her, not the other way around.  Still, even if he hadn’t wanted her support, Arya would die before she would let her best friend face that particular nightmare alone.
She used to roll her eyes when her father told her that she shouldn’t — couldn’t — trust anyone but her newest bodyguard turned other half, but as the apocalypse nears and some woman who calls herself The Handler takes a terrifying interest in Arya, she starts to think that maybe he had been onto something all along.
Tumblr media
Name: Athena Patch
Alias: AP, The Myth
Story: Patchwork Family
Faceclaim: Tessa Thompson
Power: Technopath
Summary: On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began.   Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible.  He got seven, and Athena Patch wasn’t one of them.  Born barely two months after her half sister Eudora, Athena had always known that she was different but, no matter how much money he offered, her parents refused to give her to Reginald, and Athena never met the Umbrella Academy.
Until she was 21, a skilled technopath and recent orphan, in the same Police Academy class as her sister and a boy who could have been her brother, and Athena found herself a new family with the two of them.
And then Diego dropped out and became a vigilante, Athena dropped out to become a hacker, and Eudora actually followed through and became a cop, but the three remained their own little family.  And then Reginald Hargreeves dies, and Athena accompanies Diego to the funeral for the man who could have been her father, meets more people who could have been her siblings, and gets roped into stopping the apocalypse.
Tumblr media
Name: Audrey Hargreeves
Alias/Number: Number 8, The Charmer
Story: Mesmerizing
Faceclaim: Emeraude Toubia
Power: Hypnosis
Summary: On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth.  This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began.  Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible.  He got eight of them.
Audrey Hargreeves, The Charmer, was gifted with the power of hypnosis.  So long as she focused, Audrey would use words or movement to put anyone under her spell.  So, as an extra piece of her training, Reginald had her trained in several forms of dance, and Audrey fell in love.  After years of abuse, she was unsurprised to find that her family was falling apart, and was one of the first to call it quits.  Instead of staying in their personal hell-mansion, Audrey chose to pursue ballet and avoid using her powers as much as possible, and to never, ever look back.  But then Reginald died, the surviving siblings reunited, Five showed up to warn them about the apocalypse, and Audrey realizes that the past can never stay in the past.
Tumblr media
Name: Autumn Hargreeves
Alias/Number: A
Story: Unlucky
Face claim:  Danielle Rose Russell
Power: Redacted
Summary:  On the 12th hour of the first day of October 2000, 13 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible. He got twelve
.Labelled A through a L, the Initials spent their early years training, mentored by their older siblings. And by the time the original Umbrella Academy dissolved, the new one was ready to take their place. For years, the new Academy thrived, until they too fell apart.
And then Reginald died, and the seventeen siblings reunited for the funeral. A lifetime of resentment, rivalries, and abandonment issues would be a lot for any family, let alone a family of superheroes whose long lost brother has just appeared for the first time in sixteen years. And that’s when Macey Arden, the thirteenth miracle, shows up.
Tumblr media
Name: Bailey Hargreeves
Alias/Number: 8, The Angel
Story: Here’s To Never Growing Up
Face claim:  Ginny Gardner
Power: Cellular Regeneration
Summary:  On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible. He got eight. But it soon becomes clear that Bailey Hargreeves is different from the rest of her siblings, that she ages at a fraction of the speed that they do.
When her siblings are thirteen, she is six; when they are eighteen, she is ten; when they are twenty nine, at the dawn of the apocalypse, she is fifteen. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the speed at which she ages, no consistency with which to plan. And Bailey, ever the youngest, can’t leave the mansion with her siblings. At least, not until Klaus, through means that she never wants to know, gets her registered as his own. And for twelve years, their system works. As far as anyone knows, Bailey is his daughter, dumped on his doorstep by a one night stand. It works; they’re as thick as thieves despite Bailey’s age and Klaus’ addiction, and everything is good. Until Reginald dies. Bailey was prepared for the fighting, she had accepted the bad blood, she was unfazed by the news of the apocalypse, but she never expected to no longer be the youngest of the Hargreeves siblings.
Tumblr media
Name: Beatrice Lovecraft-Hargreeves
Alias/Number: 6.5, The Abomination
Story: The Monster In Me
Face claim:  Kaya Scodelario
Love Interest: Ben Hargreeves
Power: Eldritch Physiology (summons tentacles from her hands)
Summary:  On October 1st, 1989, Beatrice Lovecraft-Hargreeves is one of 43 miracle children, born to women who had not been pregnant when the day began.  On October 31st, 1989, Shailene and Rupert Lovecraft refused to give their daughter to billionaire Reginald Hargreeves.
But growing up just down the street from the Academy, Reginald never took his sight off of her, waiting for the opportune moment to add her to his collection.  That moment comes on December 31st, 1999, when tentacles emerge from Beatrice’s hands and slaughter her parents.  The billionaire is quick to step in and claim the girl, stealing her out from CPS and naming her 6.5, The Abomination, The Horror’s other half.  Only, he didn’t anticipate just how close the two would become; didn’t anticipate that the two so called monsters would fall in love.  Didn’t anticipate Beatrice dying when she was fourteen.
And then, three years later, Ben dies.  Klaus attempts to bring his brother, his best friend, back, but instead he brings back Beatrice.  And aside from now being a few years younger than the other Hargreeves’, she seems unchanged.  Except that now she and Klaus are bonded, now someone else can see his ghosts.  And just as they start to get used to it, Reginald Hargreeves dies and they have to return for the funeral.  They have to face the rest of the academy, who still think Beatrice is dead; who still don’t believe that Klaus can talk to Ben; who still all blame themselves — and each other — for the two tragedies.  And if that weren’t complicated enough, another presumed dead Hargreeves shows up with warnings of an impending apocalypse.
Tumblr media
Name: Braeden Hargreeves
Alias/Number: The Brain, Number 8
Story: Knowledge Is Power
Face claim:  Blake Lively
Power: Knowledge
Summary:  On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth.  Yes, we know that.  Braeden Hargreeves, The Brain, was one of them.  Gifted with super intelligence, with the ability to know all of the information of any book or person that she touched, Reginald made it very clear that Braeden was not allowed to touch anyone at the Academy, ever.  Isolated and touch starved, Braeden found a coping mechanism in playing other people, which soon grew into a passion for acting.
At the age of eighteen, both she and her rival - sorry, sister - left home with the intention of pursuing theatre. While Allison went straight to Hollywood, using her powers to advance her career, Braeden went to Broadway and slowly but surely worked her way up until she was asked to play one of the two leads in a new TV show, a role which brought her face to face with her estranged sister.
As is often the case with siblings, their reunion brings back eighteen years of resentment and rivalries, and just as soon as they start to put the past behind them, their third sister publishes a tell all novel about their lives and everything falls apart again.

Name: Briana Hargreeves
Alias/Number: B
Story: Unlucky

Tumblr media
Name: Cam Hargreeves
Alias/Number: 7
Story: Someone Will Bleed
Face claim:  Lana Condor
Power: Enhanced Fighting
Summary: On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began.   Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible.  He got eight.  And then there were seven.  After a mission gone south, nine year old Cam Hargreeves was left for dead.
While Cam moved on, learning to survive on her own while watching her siblings on the news, the remaining seven Hargreeves never could.  Diego and Luther, blaming each other for the loss of their third musketeer, went from the best of friends to bitter rivals.  Reeling from the loss of their sister, Allison and Vanya shut everyone out — save for Luther and Five respectively.  Ben grew quieter and Five grew more restless and Klaus turned to drugs in the hopes of never having to see his sister’s ghost.
But there was no ghost for him to see, because Cam wasn’t dead.  For six years, Cam struggled, but survived.  She watched on the news when Five suddenly stopped showing up; trying to find him by herself, but to no avail.  Until one day, shortly after her fifteenth birthday, a woman approached her.  She called herself the Commissioner, and invited Cam to join the Temps Commission and help save the world.  And, with nothing else going for her, Cam said yes, and was introduced to her partner; and old man who’d survived the apocalypse alone, who also happened to be her long lost brother.
And then Cam learned the truth.  The Commission’s goal was to make sure that the apocalypse happened.  And Five’s goal was to stop the apocalypse and save their family.  Well, at least Cam had no doubt about which side she was on.
Tumblr media
Name: Cassie Hargreeves
Story: Dead Girl Walking
Face claim:  Claire Holt
Power: Prophecy
Summary:  On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began.   Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible.  He got eight.  And then there were seven.
Cassandra Hargreeves had been bought alongside her brother, Luther, but Cassie was a seer.  A seer who regularly advised that her siblings disobey Reginald, and her siblings always trusted her.  And when they were seven, Luther disobeyed Reginald for the first time, because Cassie told him to.  And Reginald decided that enough was enough.  He told her siblings that she had died, selling her to a “boarding school” in England, owned by an acquaintance of his.  Almost twenty three years later, Reginald Hargreeves died, as Cassie knew he would.  The surviving five Hargreeves children gather for the funeral and find themselves face to face with not one but two of their supposedly dead siblings, both of whom bring warnings of the impending apocalypse.
Tumblr media
Name: Catarina Moreno-Hargreeves
Alias/Number: The Witch
Title: Promise Of Fidelity
Face claim:  Eiza Gonzalez
Love Interest: Diego Hargreeves
Power: Witchcraft
Summary:  Entreat me not to leave thee, and to return from following after thee, for whither thou goest, I will go. When Catarina Moreno first spoke those words, the day she married Diego Hargreeves, she meant them. Two miracle babies, The Kraken and The Witch, and the tumultuous road that had brought them together, and neither could imagine being apart ever again. And years later, she still meant them. Funerals, family reunions, and apocalypses would never be enough to take her from her husband’s side - even learning about his deceased father’s obsession with her couldn’t do that.
Reginald Hargreeves had sought Catarina Moreno for years, offering everything he could to her parents in exchange for their little miracle, but they refused. All the way to the day he died, he always swore that she was they key to stopping the apocalypse, always knew that he needed to bring her together with the Academy, but he never expected that to be as Diego’s wife.
But still, like clockwork, the apocalypse comes, and Catarina is right there by her husband’s side, ready to face whatever comes their way. Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

Tumblr media
Name: Cleo Sullivan
Story: Ricochet
Faceclaim: Tessa Thompson
Love Interest: Luther Hargreeves
Power: Sonic Scream
Summary: Cleo Sullivan knew a lot of things.  She knew that she was born on October 1st, 1989; she knew that her mother called her her “little miracle”; she knew that law school was supposed to be the hardest part of her life.  She knew that when people said she had a “killer voice”, they meant it literally; she knew that running around in black leather, punishing abusers who’d gotten away was a bad idea; she knew that she needed to keep her powers a secret.  She knew that Luther Hargreeves, of the Umbrella Academy Hargreeves, had died to save her.  But then her best friend Eudora’s ex, and her own part time vigilante parter Diego — one of the only people who knew the truth about her birth — came around asking for her help to save the world, and Cleo Sullivan meets a man with a familiar face and an unfamiliar body.  And Cleo Sullivan learns that she was wrong, on at least one of those counts.
Tumblr media
Name: Dahlia Mort
Story: Ultraviolence
Faceclaim: Jodie Comer
Love Interest: Diego Hargreeves
Power: Redacted
Summary: On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible. He got seven of them. Dehlia wasn’t one of them. In fact, within hours of her birth, she wasn’t even in 1989 anymore. Her mother opened a briefcase and, in a flash, she was at the Commission.
So Dahlia grew up, trained, learned to walk and talk, trained, got a sister, trained. Desperate to prove herself, Dahlia threw herself into her work, at the expense of having an actual life.  She proved herself to be the best of the best. Proved herself worthy of being trained by the best agent in commission history. Proved herself worthy of her family, her job, and even her birth.  But by 25, she had learned that nothing she did would be good enough for The Handler. For her mother. So, she stole a briefcase and ran away.
Que sera, sera; but life always has a way of going to shit.

Summary: Emery Raves wasn’t dead.  Emery Raves should have been dead; everyone else in the world was.  Everyone except for Emery Raves and the boy who showed up in a flash of blue.  And the boy, Five, explained.  The world had ended; he survived because he was a time traveller; on October 1st, 1989 — her birthday — a group of kids with superpowers had been born; and, somehow, Emery had powers that allowed her to survive the end of the world.  Decades later and a week before the world was going to end, Emery had to hope that, whatever her still unknown powers might be, this time they would be enough to save the entire world.

Faceclaim: Taissa Farmiga
Power: Emotional Absorption
Love Interest: past Klaus Hargreeves
Summary: On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth.  This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began.  Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible.  He got eight.
Number 7 — The Soul — Helena Hargreeves was one of them. Cursed with the ability to absorb emotions, and without the ability to filter them out, living in the mansion was a constant nightmare. So, sixteen and traumatized by the loss of her second brother, Helena followed Klaus out of the mansion and out of their siblings’ lives. The next several years of her life passed in a blur of drugs and drinking, until an overdose landed Helena in rehab. Thirty days later, and sober for the first time in years, Helena promised herself that she would keep it that way, and two years later she finally left Klaus. With help from Diego, she got her life together, got a job, and started her life over without Klaus or her siblings. And she was fine, she was good, until Diego showed up one night, begging her to go home with him for their father’s funeral.

Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible. He got twelve.
Labelled A through a L, the Initials spent their early years training, mentored by their older siblings.

This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began.  June McLaughlin never knew that her mom hadn’t been pregnant.  She lived a fairly normal life, although she often lost track of time - to a point where she spent half of her teenage years seeing doctors and specialists.  But after witnessing her parents die in a mall shooting, the then twenty one year old finds herself feeling completely lost and disconnected, and soon finds her way to the party scene, spiraling further and further downwards, losing more and more time, until one day she meets an equally messed up boy with tattoos on each of his hands and the exact same birth minute as hers.

Love Interest: Luther Hargreeves
Summary: On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth.  This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began.  Grace Hargreeves had been pregnant when the day began, and Kamaria’s birth had been pregnant.  Her birth was expected.  What wasn’t expected was that for some reason — her alien biology, Reginald’s experiments, or maybe just fate — her birth would trigger the birth of 43 miracle children.  Instead of getting one child that day, Reginald Hargreeves got eight.
Being number Zero was supposed to be an honour.  She was supposed to be the best of the best, but Kamaria knew better — Reginald didn’t see her as a person.  And if she’d ever doubted it, he would have confirmed it when he faked her death and locked her away in a separate wing of the mansion, keeping her isolated from everyone but he and Pogo.  For years, Kamaria trained in isolation, mastering her powers and growing in resentment, until finally she managed to break out of the mansion.  She started a new life as a professional dancer, and left the past in the past.  And then Luther showed up at one of her performances with no recollection of her existence.  And then Luther went to the moon the next morning.  And then Reginald Hargreeves died.
And, eleven years after finally escaping, Kamaria Hargreeves went home, only to find out that her former classmates — siblings? — and even her own mother didn’t remember that she’d ever existed.

Kylie Hargreeves was one of them.
Gifted with the ability to manipulate energy, Ky was given the highest honour; number Zero, the Bomb.  While she was treated better than her siblings, she saw the suffering they endured, and did her best to defend them, but after Number Five disappeared, nothing was the same.
She tried to hold her family together, but in the end they still fell apart, and she never thought that she would see them again.  But then their father dies, and the siblings are forced to reunite.  But they aren’t the same as Ky remembers them, and frankly, neither is she.  She can handle temperamental siblings and a lifetime of resentments, but can she get them to cooperate long enough to stop the apocalypse?
Tumblr media
Name: Larissa Hargreeves
Alias: Number 8
Story: Say It Ain’t So
Faceclaim: Troian Bellisario
Power: Precognitive Vocifery
Summary: Larissa Hargreeves had been the golden girl, once.  The perfect daughter who could speak anything into reality as long as she believed enough.  She had been the original Number One, until her fall from grace.  The first time she ever failed to speak something into existence, the first time she hadn’t been able to believe hard enough, she was unceremoniously demoted to Number Eight, where she spent the rest of her miserable years at the Hargreeves Mansion before finally breaking out.
That was supposed to be the end of it; she was never supposed to have to go back to the source of her trauma.  But apparently she hadn’t believed that enough either, because a few months before her thirtieth birthday, Reginald Hargreeves dies and Larissa has to go back home for the funeral turned family reunion.  She was supposed to go to appease Pogo and then leave again, and this time she would be free from the house of horrors for the rest of her life.
But even Larissa couldn’t just speak the apocalypse out of existence; that would be almost as impossible as speaking her siblings into cooperating.

Leah Hargreeves was able to tolerate a lot of shit. She could handle the missions; she could handle the ‘lessons’; she could handle being forced to burn herself time and time again; she could even handle just about anything the universe threw at her. And then Ben died, and Leah found her limit. She could tolerate just about anything, but she couldn’t — wouldn’t — handle Reginald blaming she and her siblings for her twin’s death. And so the Hargreeves lost a second sibling that day.
Leah left the mansion as soon as the funeral was over. Yes, it broke her heart to lose the rest of her siblings, but she thought it would hurt less to lose them while they were alive than it would to lose a third – or fourth or fifth or sixth or seventh – sibling for good. She knew that she might never see them again, but she could at least cling to the hope that they were still alive. So she forced herself to move on, to never look back.
But when she sees Reginald’s death announced on the TV, Leah knows that she has to go back; that she has to at least try to reconnect with her remaining siblings. And given the choice between stopping the apocalypse or losing the rest of her family, well, there’s no choice at all.

Summary:
Once upon a time, forty-three not-pregnant women all gave birth at the exact same time.  Everyone knows what happened next; Reginald Hargreeves bought eight.  One, two, three, four, four and a half, five, six, and seven, and Lorelai Hargreeves didn’t even count as a whole person.  The Reaper to her twin’s Séance, the half to his four, Lorelai and Klaus had always been a team - even their powers went together.  “Gifted” with necrokinesis, Lorelai spent her childhood being forced to literally suck the life out of things.
Unable to cope with the trauma of their powers, the twins turned to hard drugs and partying.  And then their favourite brother died, and that was the end.  They moved out a week later, vowing to leave everyone and everything Hargreeves in the past.  They kept that promise for over a decade, until Reginald Hargreeves is found dead in his study.

Name: Max Carmichael
Story: Supercut
Face claim:  Willa Holland
Power: Invisibility
Love Interest: Diego Hargreeves
Summary: The first time that one of Diego’s knives went missing he was eight and had figured that Klaus had gotten bored and stolen it.  Until he found a yellow sticky note with a red cat face drawn on, stuck to his knife holster.  Then a week later, Reginald came down to breakfast demanding to know who’d been in his office, waving an identical yellow sticky note in his hand.  This went on for the next ten years, and not a single person in the mansion was left out.  He had always figured that it was one of his siblings; after all, there was no way anyone could be getting in and out of the house unnoticed to pull it off.  But then he moves out and starts at the police academy, and within a day his handbook was gone and replaced with yet another sticky note.
Max Carmichael would say that she didn’t know why she had started targeting the Umbrella Academy mansion in the first place, but that would be a lie.  It was for the same reason that she’d started stealing at all; for attention, for recognition.  And, admittedly, to see how well her own superhuman powers held up against a team of real life superheroes.  The answer was too well, truth be told.  None of them didn’t even notice their stuff was missing in the first place — none except Diego Hargreeves.  Over the years, Max found herself more and more attached to the knife wielder, luring him into a game of cat-and-mouse that lasted for more than two decades.  She branched out eventually, museum heists and bank robberies keeping her plenty busy, but she always went back to Diego eventually.
But when Reginald Hargreeves dies, Max finds herself looking through all of the items she’d accumulated from the mansion over the years to see if there was anything that she could profit off of.  There were lots of knickknacks that would serve her well, but one particular find turns her path away from her favourite consignment shop and instead brings her face to face with Diego Hargreeves for the first time in their long, long chase.

But ten years later, Reginald Hargreeves dies.  And despite knowing that appearances can be deceiving, Maya Hargreeves still can’t ignore the need to see it with her own eyes.

Years later, the father-daughter duo are on a mission when Five finally finds a way to return to his proper timeline, and Mira quickly joins him through the portal. Name: Mireille Labonair
Story: Come What May
Face claim: Elizabeth Henstridge
Power: Artistic Creation
Love Interest: Luther Hargreeves
Summary: Mireille Labonair was a genius, plain and simple.  She graduated high school at fifteen, university by eighteen, and had her doctorate by twenty-two — and no, none of it was due to her miraculous and unexpected birth on October 1st, 1989, thank you for asking.  Soon the young genius was approached by a certain Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who was fascinated by her prodigal advances in bio-chemistry.  He offered her a job, and by 23, Mirelle was working for the most infamous billionaire in the world.   Her job had its highs and lows, like any other job.
Befriending Luther Hargreeves was an absolute high; but his near death and Reginald’s unethical experiment were resounding lows.  Luther’s trip to the moon was a low, but access to equipment she had only ever dreamt of was a high.  Sir Reginald’s death was a bit of both, to be honest, but Luther’s return was a definite high.  But Luther’s long-lost brother showing up with warnings of an impending apocalypse?  That was definitely the biggest low in her career.

This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible. He got eight.  The twins, Vanya and Odessa, were the first two he obtained.
But despite sharing blood, the twins had nothing else in common.  Where Vanya was ordinary, Number Seven, Odessa was Number Zero, too powerful for her own good.  Resentment grew quickly, and Odessa was the first Hargreeves to move out, and the only Hargreeves not to go to Reginald’s funeral.
Odessa Hargreeves doesn’t remember the end of the world, exactly.  She remembers a flash of white as she collapsed, halfway across the world from her father’s funeral; she remembers waking up in a burning world, face to face with her long lost brother; but she doesn’t remember the world ending.
But after forty four years, after a lifetime of working alongside her now younger brother, Odessa finds herself returning to 2019 to attend the funeral at the mansion she swore she would never return to.

Despite her best efforts, Ophelia cannot save Ben’s life, and the realization pushes her to the point of leaving the Academy, her family, and her powers behind.  She goes on to study medicine, but refuses to her her powers ever again.  Until, over a decade later, Reginald dies and Ophelia has to face the life she left behind, and the people she couldn’t save.

Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible. He got seven.
Not only was Poppy not one of the seven, she wasn’t one of the forty-three either. In fact, Poppy wasn’t build until the Hargreeves children were ten and Reginald decided that Grace was no longer enough to keep them in line. No, they needed a sister; someone to keep them in line, someone who they would be attached to, someone disposable enough that he could threaten to deactivate her if they stepped out of line. And so, Poppy was built, designed to age with the children so that they would truly see her as their sister.
But over the years, the Hargreeves left, and Reginald let Poppy’s maintenance fall by the wayside. He never noticed that as she grew to match her ‘siblings’, she was also growing into herself, developing free will and opinions of her own. And then he died, and for the first time in years, the Hargreeves family is united again to stop the apocalypse. But Poppy knows more than she is supposed to, and she no longer intends to play by Reginald’s rules.

For fourteen years, her life was pretty good.  Sure, her aunts and uncles had all left before her fifth birthday, and yes, her grandfather was a nightmare when it came to training her materialization abilities, and, okay, she’d spent the past four years desperately missing her dad, but it could have been worse.  And then her grandfather is found dead in his office, and Bekah knows that she’s about to find out how much worse it can get.

Name: Sierra Nearing
Story: Once Upon A Dream
Face claim:  Kennedy McMann
Power: Redacted
Summary: Sierra Nearing hadn’t planned on spending her life working at Griddy’s, but life didn’t care much for her plans.  She had moved in with Aunt Agnes when she was 11, after her mom passed away, and by 13 she had started helping out in the diner.  Thousands of faces had come and gone, but very few were as memorable as the Hargreeves.
There were seven of them when they first started coming, then six, then five, and Sierra watched as they all changed with each loss.  She watched how they went from giggling together in their favourite booth, eating donuts so fast that she worried they might make themselves sick, to barely picking at their donuts and trying not to meet each other’s eyes.  And then they stopped coming together at all.
They still visited, but separately, and Sierra would never pretend that she knew exactly what had happened, but she pieced it together over the years.  Allison left the city, the others left the mansion, Luther got left behind.  They all wanted to leave their pasts behind them, but none of them could let go of Griddy’s.  So they didn’t.  Once a week every week, each of them on a different day, they’d show up.  Looking for a warm drink and a bite to eat; looking for an escape from the rest of the world; looking for an open ear known as Sierra.  And so, Sierra listened.
Over the years she grew closer to the long-estranged Hargreeves siblings.  She stopped seeing them as customers and started seeing them as friends.  She did what she could to look out for them, to support them, to stand in for the siblings they’d lost over time.  But she never told any of them about their other siblings’ visits.  She wanted them to feel safe in the diner, like they had at least one place where they could let down their guards.
They were never supposed to know that they all still shared a connection to Griddy’s, to Sierra.  Not until they were ready to face each other, to face their past.  But then Reginald Hargreeves dies, and Sierra receives not one but four invitations to the funeral.

But when Reginald Hargreeves dies under mysterious circumstances, Diego is the one doing the asking, and Sofia is as unable to say no to him as anyone else is to her.  And despite the family drama, mild torture, and the literal apocalypse, she can’t bring herself to regret saying yes.

He got seven. Taylor Bell was not one of them.  But after her parents’ mysterious deaths, only days after Number Five disappeared, Reginald Hargreeves finally adopted the telekinetic teenager.  Known as Number Five, The Replacement, Taylor has never had any doubt as to where she stands in this family.  She’s all too happy to turn her back on it all and leave as soon as she can, but then her father dies, she returns home, and the boy she was brought in to replace turns up, warning them about the apocalypse.

Name: Teresa Hargreeves
Alias: The Trial
Story: Legacy
Faceclaim: Kiernan Shipka
Power: Reverse Divination
Summary:  Klaus Hargreeves would be the first to admit that he doesn’t remember most of his teenage years.  He certainly doesn’t remember Tracy James, one of his many one night stands, but Tracy remembers him.  And, nine months after they first met, she shows up on the doorstep of the Academy, newborn baby in tow.  But before Tracy can find Klaus, she’s intercepted by Reginald Hargreeves himself, who convinces her to leave the child with her “loving” grandfather.  But Reginald never wanted a granddaughter, he wanted an experiment.  Teresa Hargreeves is raised in complete isolation in the east wing of the mansion, never once hearing about the Umbrella Academy.  Her life is restricted to Reginald’s trials and training sessions, nothing more.  Until Reginald dies, and Teresa shows up at the funeral, expecting it to only be herself, Grace, and Pogo.  But much to her surprise, six others show up, adults who claim to have grown up in the mansion.  Some teenage boy showing up with warnings about an impending apocalypse is nothing to Teresa, not when a simple handshake shows that she’s standing in front of her father for the first time in her life.

Name: Tiffany Katz
Story: Last Night Of The World
Faceclaim: Lily James
Love Interest: Diego Hargreeves
Summary:  On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth; Tiffany Katz was not one of those babies.  In fact, not only was Tiffany Katz not born on October 1st, Tiffany Katz wasn’t even born in 1989.
Born in 1940, alongside her twin brother Dave, Tiffany Katz was as ordinary as they came.  Her life was never supposed to be extraordinary, but when Klaus Hargreeves found himself in the Vietnam War, he met a soldier and a nurse and he fell in love, and that changed everything.  Tiffany watched as her brother fell in love with a strange man, tried to save him as he bled out in that man’s arms, and accidentally followed that strange man into the future.  She didn’t know much about Klaus Hargreeves, but when she finds herself in an unfamiliar city, around unfamiliar people, she turns to him for guidance.  When he tells her that she’s in the future with less than a week until the apocalypse?  For some reason, she can’t help but believe him.  And well, what else could she do but try to help the mysterious and super-powered Hargreeves siblings save the world?
And if saving the world brings her closer to Klaus’ incredibly cute brother with a thing for knives and leather, well, apparently the Katz siblings were just destined to fall for Hargreeves boys.
Tumblr media
Name: Tori Hargreeves
Alias/Number: Number 8
Story: When It Rains
Face claim: Margot Robbie
Power: Redacted
Summary: No, Tori Hargreeves didn’t want to talk about her life in the Umbrella Academy.  Just because Vanya had thought that it was somehow acceptable to publish her bullshit book didn’t mean that she was right, and it definitely didn’t mean that Tori was going to start answering questions about her childhood.  When she left the mansion with Diego and Klaus she promised herself to leave the past in the past, and goddammit she would keep that promise.
She wasn’t too proud of her first few years of freedom: the endless drinking and drugs with Klaus, the vigilantism with Diego, the admittedly tragic makeover she’d given herself… but she had turned her life around.  She had gotten a GED, graduated university, gone to law school.  She had passed the bar and started working in family law, determined to protect children from abusers in the same way she wished someone had done for her.  She had built herself a new life, one where she didn’t have to think about Reginald Hargreeves or his abuse.  One where she could be herself; where she could be happy.  But when it rains, it pours, and a storm of apocalyptic proportions is looming on Tori’s horizon.
She left the mansion with a promise to leave the past in the past but between Reginald’s death, Five’s dramatic return, and the upcoming apocalypse, Tori Hargreeves might have no choice but to break that promise.
Tumblr media
Name: Vienna Montgomery
Story: The World Turned Upside Down
Face claim: Amanda Seyfried
Power: Lie Detection
Love Interest: Diego or Luther (tbd)
Summary: Vienna Montgomery knew that most private investigators didn’t find success quite as easily as she did, and she knew that it was because most private investigators didn’t have an uncanny ability to know when they were being lied to.  Maybe it was an unfair advantage, but she could live with that as long as she was helping people.  All she had ever wanted to do was help people, which is why her patch had started her off at the police academy.  She had loved training with Diego and Eudora, becoming the three musketeers of their their class, but she had quickly realized that being a police officer wasn’t what she wanted.  So, a week after Diego got kicked out, she quit and started PI training instead.
For almost ten years she had successfully run her own business, having dinner with Diego and Eudora at least once a week, never leaving a case unsolved, and gaining a reputation as the best PI in the city.  But her career would always be secondary to her friends.  Her two former classmates were her best friends; the only people who knew that the secret to her success; they were the only family she had.
But when Reginald Hargreeves dies, it isn’t Diego who asks her to go with him.  No, she gets the call from Luther Hargreeves, Diego’s long estranged brother and rival, asking her to come and investigate the mysterious death.

Name: Virginia West
Story: Written In Stone
Face claim:  Melissa Benoist
Power: Writing manifestation
Summary:  On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began.  Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible.  Virginia West was not one of them.
While her parents loved her, they were often away, and Virginia found solace with her beloved books.  A love of reading quickly turned into a dream of writing, but when she started her first story, at only nine years of age, Ginny learned that she was different.  As she wrote, her characters and stories came to life around her, and the more she wrote, the more real they became. Desperate to understand her own powers, Ginny found her way to Reginald Hargreeves, and to the Umbrella Academy.
Tumblr media
Name: Wilhelmina Hargreeves
Alias/Number: Number 7; later Number 6
Story: Children Behave
Face claim: Victoria Pedretti
Power: Redacted
Summary: As Number 7, Wilhelmina Hargreeves had always come up short of the rest of her siblings — at least, those with powers.  After all, while projecting was useful, it wasn’t very useful in combat; it was a good distraction, but someone else still had to apprehend her targets.  It wasn’t particularly nice, to know that she would never be good enough, but she was used to it, she could handle it.
Until she decided not to.  After Five disappeared, life at the mansion became infinitely worse, and at sixteen, Willa became the next of the siblings to leave the mansion.  She left her number with her siblings, packed up, and moved halfway across the country, and never heard from them again.  Until Ben died.  Until Ben died, and Willa knew, she just knew, that she could have prevented it if she hadn’t left — and, just a few years later, Vanya would tell the entire world the same thing when she published her book.
Which is why, when she hears about Luther’s accident only a few years later, she knows she has to go back to the house of her nightmares.  She can’t let another one of her siblings die, not when she could have saved him.  But when she returns to find out that she’s now Number 6, and that Luther is being sent to the moon, she realizes that Reginald had it all planned out — and she just gave him exactly what he wanted.
For four years, Willa found herself trapped in the mansion; unwilling to leave in case something happened to Luther, and unable to escape from Reginald’s constant scrutiny.  Until finally, four years later, Luther is coming home, Reginald is dead, and Willa is free — and the main suspect in Reginald’s death, with the apocalypse only days away.  So, maybe not so free.

Professor Hara Fyrstan, in fairy robes; remastered concept.
Tale 31: If We Lost The Sea Wives (chapter 1 - Northland Family 1/5 ) part 7. Stories of Magic Forests
no warings
Hara Fyrstan tends the Fey Conservatory, with great care; He was a prodigy, filling the role his grandfather once did. In fact, they weren’t too different from each other, in looks, roles and personality. Both red haired, grey eyed, fey loving, Northland bred passionate professors. Both with big hearts, and equal compassion for all living things; Including fey. This due to both of them being born, and raised, in the farthest North West tip of Elden Kingdom: The magic Isle of Isfisceard. This mystical ancient place, had the most magical sea in the world. Every inch of the village and islands, was coated in fey. It made the people invested in their land, and its connection to fey of the sea. Naturally, this included Hara and his grandfather, Saturn.
The fey conservatory of Pepperidge academy, which was used for rehabilitation and education, was Grandfather Firepot’s greatest accomplishment. It is a school treasure. All teachers, students, and fey; enjoyed the peaceful atrium. It is a glass walled, three stories tall, magic garden withing the school. Hara dreamed of this job, ever since his grandfather told him stories about it. It inspired Hara to work hard in his Northland schooling, to immigrate to to The Grand West, just for the position. When Hara got there, he made the most of his success. Pepperidge Academy’s infrastructure, community, and fey, received only the best love and care from their new head seer. Hara had gone so far, as to make all of Pepperidge a protected magic forest, like his ow. He had quite the reputation after only a year’s employment. Hara was incredibly thankful for his grandfather, who helped inspire and teach him.
The conservatory didn’t just hold and heal ferries and wonderous plants, but also aquatic fey; Fish children, Sea wives, or Daughter of The Sea, as Hara knew them. As a mage of the Northlands, Hara should have a complex and deep relationship with the daughters of the sea, but instead his qualms with the Fish Kingdom came from one of his students; Rah Wintersleep. Rah was also a mage, but instead of a seer of magic knowledge like Hara, he was charmer that sung spells. Rah was also a storm-breaker, that caused epic storms when magic flowed through him in times of joy. He was working on controlling it, with a storm staph. Rah was not only Hara’s responsibility as a student, but had fallen into a trap Hara’s kin often do; Loving a maiden from the waves. Sorry, mister of the waves. While preparing food for the fey, in the back room, Hara got to over hear Rah, and his true love, Fish Prince Broc. Hara spied on everyone who came into the conservatory, in order to protect the fey and students.
“The selkie your mother made, which you suggested to her; I think she’s actually infatuated with our witchery teacher.” Rah said. He was charming the small pearly cuttle Kraken in the fountain. Hara perked up at the word Selkie.
“Oh, yeah. He’s probably going to love her back. Selkies often suffer from Stockholm’s syndrome, so it’s nice to see a little sister find actual true love; Instead of being kidnapped.” Broc smiled. Hara was too busy in school for seal gawking, back home. Rah and Broc’s conversation was making him nostalgic. As if the distant tune of proverbial bagpipes, was calling him hither.
“Now that you’re my queen in waiting, and the wolf kingdom fell into disrepair, I worry for my mother.” Broc continued. “She always frequents the Day Veil of men, but now mages have made the Beast King’s more willing to see view humanity in person. I doubt people will take kindly to a ghostly giant mermaid, or bewitchingly radiant maiden. I don’t want to be Fish King so soon. I will worry for all my new daughters, while I mourn my Mother and little siblings.” Broc said. Rah hugged Broc, to comfort him.
“I’m sorry I’m too young to be queen of a fey kingdom yet. I worry I’d be a bad fish Dad; No one can top your father Lyra… Besides; your mother, father, and family are very well loved. It would be a tragedy to all who adore the water’s fair folk. I can’t imagine life without ocean fey. All beautifully crafted, and sweet of song.” Rah said. He was getting sad, which was unusual. The two of then gazed into the pool of miniature kraken, nuzzled together like gannets.
Hara slumped. Imagining the world with fewer fey, was a chilling thought to someone who spent their life learning about and helping them. The thought that the bays of Isfisceard, could no longer echo with the haunting melody of the fish children, seemed unnatural. The ocean would have no song, no feminine beauty, and no more wonder. Hara considered if he had taken it all for granted. Rah’s words made him think of home, and all it’s verdant cliffside isles. Home would be nothing without the Sirens on the oddly formed sea walls, mermaids in the rivers and glens, selkies on the beaches, or krakens listening in the deep. The smell of sea salt, vibrancy of the hills, wool of sheep and music of home. Hara wilted at the thought of all that vanishing. It made him feel like life was short, and that he wanted to see it all again. The fey of the fish kingdom, were the ones that inspired him to study and conserve fey. They taught him he was a mage, and how to interact with the world of magic. Hara wanted to experience that again. All of this in the span of the ten minutes it took to pour milk into little labeled saucers for the pixies.
After the school day was done, Hara went to his dorm, to see his dragon princess trying to cuddle Woodwick. Hara had become a queen in waiting himself, but to the Dragon Kingdom; Fleoganan was his true love. She was an optimistic idiot. Which is an underappreciated quality in people. Hara’s heart filling with love when embracing her, combined with a day’s brooding, reminded him that his family hadn’t met Fleog yet. They had already shared the undying true love’s spell, and Grandpa knew nothing of it. Then Hara saw Woodwick, innocently preparing for tomorrow’s lessons. Woodwick also remined Hara of home; He was technically Hara’s adoptive uncle. Woodwick was one of the last two fountain nymphs, which grandfather had found on a black market. These Naiads turned the flowing pools they bathed in, into water that could heal any wound. Yet, Woodwick’s dream was to be human; And due to his value, grandpa adopted Woodwick, and kept his identity secret. This gave Woodwick his dream, by fooling everyone. Nymphs can be very convincingly human. In fact, the unpublished research grandpa Firepot left to Hara, on Woodwick’s desire for humanness, helped Hara conserve local fey.  It gave common folk, including wizards, empathy towards fey, similar to mages.
When Woodwick and Hara first met, it was on a road trip to the family beach home. They spent time packed into a hot car, after being picked up at the Main Northland Station. Their little home was in the middle of nowhere, as Isfisceard was an isolated heritage village, by the Fish Gate into the Shadow Veil of fey. The small house was on a sandy beach, along the main road into the cove. South of the magic academy and village, west of the train station. Hara was not fooled by his grandfather’s insistence that Woodwick was just a tween he adopted. Hara, though a child, was an avid seer mage; He knew a fairy when he saw one. Hara never asked why Grandpa adopted a fey, and never mentioned that he knew. Woodwick had just become a normal member of his family.
It was official; Hara missed his. He hadn’t seen his grandfather, or parents, since he graduated and arrived in Pepperidge. Hara decided he wanted to visit home, the next chance he got.
“Woodwick, I want to go home for the semester break; Want to come? Fleog, you have to meet my family.” Hara chimed.
“I’m not particularly interested.” Woodwick said. “Then again, it would make your grandfather very happy.”
“I can’t believe your not homesick. I keep forgetting that under all that professor, is a fairy.” Hara sighed. Woodwick as a fey, lived a timeless state with no opinions of past or future. Missing something, would require opinions regarding the past.
“Well, now that I know seeking a familiar face is human thing, I may consider myself persuaded.” Woodwick responded. He wanted to be human, and was very assertive about it. There was a time he was also convinced he was a real boy, and not some changeling. He was focusing too much on the words, and not enough of the familial aspects. Hara apologized, and made the plans. He felt good about visiting his safe, unchanged, childhood home. That was on a specific abandoned beach, close to the fey of the sea.

Havok Publishing Hits Realm Makers 2019!
Tumblr media
I'm in shock. Or maybe it's awe. I'm humbled, for sure. And tired, too. Definitely tired. But all the other things are overpowering the sleep deprivation, like they usually do post-conference. But this year it's different. I didn't come home with a head full of mush and a bag full of notes. No, this was not a "learning" year like those in the past. Not in the strictest sense, anyway. Though, I certainly am still processing all of the unexpected happenings and possibilities. But to understand what I'm talking about, you first need to understand what I've been up to.
The last few months, I've been talking about how I've been so busy, and stressed, and overwhelmed, and blah, blah, blah. Some of it had to do with my day job as a physical therapist, but most of it revolved around my writing and editing career, the majority of it being work for my company, Havok Publishing.
Yes, I have a publishing company. But it's not "mine," exactly. Not completely, anyway. Almost a year ago, I took the reigns from its previous owner (Ben Wolf) with one stipulation: I'd have gobs and gobs of friends helping me run things. And after splitting the managerial strain with two spectacular women (I run the editorial department while a kraken runs the marketing and tech departments and a jackalope runs the operations department… that probably makes more sense to them than it does you…), I "hired" on almost twenty more volunteers to fill out the ranks. And since then, we've been busting our tails to create something that's so much bigger than any one of us.
Tumblr media
But you may be asking why in the world twenty-something people would volunteer for anything so involved as a publishing company. Well, it's because of the spirit of said company. And I was reminded of that in a big way this past weekend.
The Realm Makers writing conference is the summer highlight for a very specific group of about 300 people. You see, we're all Christians, writers, and… kind of weird. That is, we're geeks and nerds. We collect Marvel comics, write dragon stories, and wear ridiculous costumes. And we never feel more at home than when we're among our own people.
Becky Minor and a faithful few created this conference several years ago, and I've been a part of it since the beginning. Which means I've formed some deep friendships with some amazing people, most of whom I don't see in person anywhere other than this conference. And over the years, I've had the joy of watching them grow from scared, flightless writers to bold, soaring authors. So many of them have forged their own path into the wild world, and many more have joined the ranks as wide-eyed newbies. And we all continue to have the same spirit of inclusiveness and excitement for the craft and industry of fiction stories, but unfortunately, we often also share the pain of rejection in said industry. And that's exactly where Havok Publishing comes in.
Tumblr media
You see, there are a lot of readers out there. And there are also plenty of writers. But sometimes, getting good stories from writers to readers can be tricky. Polishing stories takes time. As does packaging them and delivering them into the right hands. And time is money, so many writers simply don't have the resources to get the job done, which is exactly why publishers exist. But publishers need to make money, too, which means they're often only willing to offer publishing contracts to the biggest and most well-established names in the industry. And only to the most exciting and well-packaged novels. And all of this leaves a very big hole in the process: providing new writers with an opportunity to improve their craft and put their polished stories in front of readers (other than their grandmas). And when I almost let Havok die last year, that was the only reason I didn't. We truly were a company that provided the bridge for those new writers. And we were one of the only ones in our corner of the industry doing it.
Since then, we've grown at a staggering rate. We've flipped our production and delivery model on end. We've turbo-charged our marketing. And we've been met by hordes of supporters that continue to push us forward toward great things. But, as I said, we're all volunteers. So twenty-something hours per week of pouring in without getting much back except "Good Job" stickers can take its toll. So when we were starting to feel beat down, I encouraged us all to wait until that always-magical Realm Makers weekend before losing heart. And, if I must say, I was right.
The weeks leading up to the conference were a blur. We were busy curating the best stories we'd acquired over the past six months into our first anthology, and unless you've ever published your own book (correctly), I can't possibly tell you how involved the process in. But just know that we barely made it in time. We didn't do everything right, but the final product looked amazing, and seventy-two copies of it came with us for sale in the conference bookstore.
And less than twenty-four hours after the conference began, we sold out.
Tumblr media
Yes, all seventy-two books that we ambitiously printed, loaded up, and put on display among so many other amazing novels, anthologies, comics, and crafts completely sold out in less than a day. And I was completely floored. And through the rest of the conference, other writers and fans continued to ask how they could purchase our anthology. They bought t-shirts and went online and bought the anthology there (which you can do by clicking on this link to amazon.com). And it took me a while to figure out how in the world that could have happened.
But slowly, it dawned on me: it was the spirit of Havok. We foster and nurture eager young writers. We build them up. We guide them. We give them hope. And we set them up for success in what is oftentimes their first real publication. And they, in turn, are the ultimate rockstars and advocates for what we're doing. Probably half of those seventy-two anthology copies were bought by authors who were published in it (for gifts for their friends and family), and the other half were snatched up by Realmies (the affectionate name for the Realm Makers tribe/attendees) who felt the palpable excitement generated by those of us involved in the magic.
I think there were eighteen of the Havok Hive (the name for Havok's collective volunteer staff… you will be assimilated) in attendance at this year's Realm Makers. And as a small token, Cerberus (the name for the aforementioned three heads of Havok, myself being one of them. Yes, I know. We have a lot of strange titles. Didn't I warn you that we're weird?) gifted them with bright orange Havok lanyards. And as the Hive busied itself about the conference, helping here and there where needed, it unwittingly lightened the tensions weighing on those young writers whom we love so much. As one woman told me on the last night of the conference, "Every time I see an orange lanyard, I know the person wearing it will be encouraging. Like I can actually do this thing."
Tumblr media
And that's when I knew we'd won. We'd accomplished, for the moment, what we set out to do. We'd given back to a conference and a culture that had already made such a difference in the lives of so many. We'd played our small but essential part in the process. And we will continue to do so. We're acquiring hundreds of stories each year. We're putting the best of those stories in beautiful anthologies alongside some of the industry’s biggest names. We're putting our energy and resources directly back into our authors and projects that will benefit them. And we're doing it all because we love it. And we love them. And we couldn't do any of it without that constant reminder. So, thank you, everyone, who has supported Havok Publishing along the way. You're helping us make a difference in the lives of so many creatives. And, in turn, you're helping their stories make a change in this world.
We're doing good work here at Havok, and it takes a village… or in this case, a Hive… or a Horde. I don't know. Maybe we do need to reconsider how many strange labels we're putting on everything. But you get my drift. Together, we’re weird. We’re writers. And we’re wonderful. Write on!

What are his true feelings towards Elizabeth, Jack and Bootstrap Bill Turner?
anon hour - accepting
Man, this is not a question that's answered easily, but I'm gonna do my best.
Like I know I’ve screamed about his relationship with Jack a whole lot, because Jack is someone that’s actually very important to him.  Jack is an associate, but more importantly, Jack’s his best friend.  It’s not something he planned - he tried for too long to kill him.  It’s not something he even wants, because everyone knows how Jack Sparrow is, and no one wants that chain to Jack because it means constant trouble.  But Jack is the one he’s formed the tightest bond with through mutual hate and mutual need and somehow all the heat has gone out of those barbs they fling at each other and they’ve settled into a friendship that’s comfortable for them.  He won’t die for Jack, and let’s be honest, Jack won’t die for him, but you better believe if someone ever did get the jump on Jack after everything, Hector would find them.  Jack’s on his level, and that sense of being equals is incredibly important for Hector.  He and Jack have a silent language of looks and words they don’t say and gestures that’s hard to follow if you’re not in on the secret, and in the end, one would be so bored without the other, I think.  They’re what I’d label as platonic soulmates because it would be very hard for another friend to measure up to what Jack does.
As for Elizabeth, canonwise I’d say he’s actually really very fond of her.  They went from him simply planning on keeping her as a prize to him teaching her what it means to actually be a pirate.  What it means to be prepared for the unexpected.  What it means to do what you have to and not dwell on it.  I actually think that last part probably comes from the fact that he’d know her lie about Jack staying behind to give them a chance when the kraken was attacking and he could see the guilt eating her.  You can’t survive in their world if you let it do that.  I’m not going to say he looks at her in a fatherly fashion, because that’s a lie, he most certainly does not.  But on the whole, I think she’s part of his chosen family, even if neither of them probably realize that.  She’s another one that’s important to him for separate reasons from Jack, because this is the bbpirate he pushed into her own, whom he left a massive impression on, and on the whole, I think he’d be - with this new “””canon””” - be heavily disappointed to see what she chose for herself, because he would remember watching her go from spoiled governor’s daughter to Pirate King.
And oh Lord, Billy Turner.  They were never friends, not really.  That should be stated right off.  During Hector’s time as Jack’s first mate, Billy never trusted Hector.  He always figured that Hector was up to something, and he was right.  But Billy was also just trying to get home, like Jack had promised him, so he wasn’t as forceful about it with Jack as he probably should have been.  Hector doesn’t regret what he did to Billy - he doesn’t do regrets like that at all.  But I think, especially now, he realizes it was a rash action that could have saved them a whole lot of time, and that Billy has his reasons for having second thoughts about the mutiny.  I think he realizes that Billy was just angry, because he wanted to go home.  That Billy’s anger was temporary, and that his supporting the mutiny was also a rash action.  Personally I’d like to see them make amends for that, now that they’re both older and a little wiser.  After all, Hector was able to do so with Jack, and I feel like maybe he and Billy could come to an understanding, too.  And I don’t think Hector would consider that unwelcome, either, to make peace with each other and move forward, wherever forward would lead, considering they’d probably have the chance to speak a couple of times total, with the whole Dutchman thing.

Umbrella Academy OC Masterlist
(I’ll update this with my own gifs as soon as I have the time/energy but I realized how out of date the old one was and had to fix it, as part of my bigger mission to update all of my masterlists)
Tumblr media

Go figure.

Only, he didnt anticipate just how close the two would become; didn’t anticipate that the two so called monsters would fall in love.

Desperate to prove herself, Dahlia threw herself into her work, at the expense of having an actual life.  She proved herself to be the best of the best. Proved herself worthy of being trained by the best agent in commission history.

He got twelve.
Labelled A through a L, the Initials spent their early years training, mentored by their older siblings.

Not only was Kiera Cassidy not one of them, but she had never even heard of Reginald Hargreeves or the Umbrella Academy.  Until she turned twelve, and her parents dragged her across the country in hopes of finding a doctor who could explain her sudden, inexplicable screaming and tendency to sleepwalk to cemeteries and murder scenes.  They didn’t find doctors, but Kiera found something better.

This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began.   Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible.

Chapter One | The Princess and the Dragon and Other Stories About Unlikely Heroes
Prologue / Chapter Two / Chapter Three Read Chapter Four and the rest of the novel on my Patreon!
The Kingdom of Mirrors, the loudest, southernmost and most magical of the Three Kingdoms, filled the bottom third of the crescent moon with olive trees, fishing boats and about ten thousand mirrors. It was ruled by the Durante line of the House of Stars, whose family tree was dotted with the types of people whose exploits are written into ten-minute songs about burning cities and eccentric fashion sense and enormous acts of courage in the face of fire-breathing dragons. Princess Amelia, the youngest of the Durante family, knew from early childhood that she, too, would one day have to defeat a dragon.
Nobody initially expected Amelia to face the dragon in question, partly because she was a girl and partly because she had been born second in line to the throne. Her older brother, Prince Nicholas, was both dashingly handsome and perfectly capable of embarking on such a heroic quest by himself. Unfortunately for Amelia, by the time she reached her teens Prince Nicholas found himself indisposed, so although most people were too polite to mention it, the task of dragon-slaying ultimately fell to her.
Amelia was fourteen, and in happier stories she would be learning how to dance or dabble in magic. In this story, Amelia was in charge of olive oil production. She was also kingdom treasurer, head of the royal family’s public relations department, occasional fisherwoman and part-time carer to her ailing father, the king. For someone born into a centuries-old dynasty, she spent a lot of time with ancient legal documents and recently gutted fish.
Amelia’s path to notoriety began one overwarm Monday evening in early spring when she had finished a day’s work in the kingdom treasury and was heading through the Kingdom of Mirrors’ busy capital city, Lumiere, to evening lessons in the castle. Today she would be learning mathematics with her tutor—which seemed redundant when she ran the entire kingdom’s budget from a piece of parchment and an abacus—so she dragged her feet as she walked through Market Street towards the castle.
Market Street was the epicentre of Lumiere and Amelia’s favourite part of the city. Lumiere looked like a fairytale, or a dream. It was a dream, of sorts: Amelia’s great-great-times-something grandparents designed the city themselves after the previous one was ravaged by one of those wars disguised as a marriage. Wait, no, this one was a war disguised as a war.
Neither grandparent was particularly conventional when it came to architecture, so every corner of Lumiere demanded your attention. White stone buildings rose into spires with forty sides, each one mosaiced with tiny chips of glass or ceramics. Colourful tiles trimmed every window and door, forming intricate patterns that drew the eye in a hundred directions. Only a few windows in each building held clear glass: almost everywhere boasted a stained-glass frieze of pictures or spirals. Even regular stone walls were round and misshapen, like someone plucked all the cobbles from the street and piled them on top of one another until they resembled a building. On every wall in the kingdom, from the tiniest cupboard to the largest battlement, hung a looking glass. No one was sure who had started the tradition, but they all appreciated how easy it was to check if you had food stuck in your teeth. Brightly painted doors, each competing for attention in violent shades of fuchsia or lavender or buttercup, were elegantly latticed with wrought iron. Some buildings were mosaiced entirely in silver, others in turquoise or tangerine. There wasn’t a grey space in the country and according to rumour, every colour in existence had been pressed into use somewhere in the kingdom. A staple of every primary school education in the Kingdom of Mirrors was a day spent naming the colours of each public building.
On some walls Amelia passed, mosaics formed cheery squares like kitchen tiles. On others they made bright, childlike images telling the history of the Kingdom of Mirrors. There were the olive trees, there was a woman brewing a potion, there was a boat next to some fish. The mosaiced fish were consistently bigger than the little people on the boat, which always made Amelia wonder whether the artist had no sense of scale or if they wanted to emphasise how brave the fishermen were, sailing out to face enormous krakens and territorial mermaids and climate change.
As she walked, Amelia gazed across Market Street to the little boats in the harbour, bobbing about on a minuscule breeze. Something moved near the hull of a dinghy, perhaps a school of fish or a merperson. The boat’s owner dozed on deck, oblivious. Up in the hills, lights twinkled from the peaks of each mountain. Lime green parakeets hollered over tiny sparrows, shouting over hulking seagulls.
Amelia stopped at one of Market Street’s twenty food carts to buy a snack before lessons. After a small diplomatic incident in which a local butcher replaced fresh lamb with fresh cat without mentioning it to anyone first, Amelia had lost her taste for kebabs, so she chose a cheese pastry and orange juice, praying that the cheese came from a farmyard animal. ‘You don’t have to pay, Your Majesty,’ the vendor told her as she rummaged through her purse. Although Amelia was dressed exactly like her subjects in a loose cotton dress and had the same umber skin and jet-black hair, the market knew her well. She frequently hid there to avoid going to the castle.
‘Of course I do…’ Amelia searched for the vendor’s name. ‘Sarah. Of course I have to pay, Sarah, I’m not going to go around stealing from my own people!’ Especially when you’re one of the few tradespeople who pays their taxes, she added silently.
‘Well, if you’re sure… can I put some magic in it, on the house?’
‘Oh, go on then.’ Amelia yawned and fanned herself with her sunhat. ‘Something to revive my desire to go to my maths tutorial.’
Sarah smiled and reached under her little counter for a vial labelled enthusiasm: medium strength. She flicked a couple of drops into Amelia’s orange juice. ‘Bad day at the office, Your Majesty?’
Amelia gazed across the square at children her own age. Walking home from school with cloth satchels slung over their shoulders, wearing faded patterned dresses or shorts, they jostled each other along in a way that always struck Amelia as very comradely. She tried to push back a pang of jealousy. Until Amelia’s father suffered a stroke when she was twelve, Amelia attended the same local school, wearing the same faded patterned dresses. Amelia hadn’t especially enjoyed formal education when she was forced to go, but after years of squeezing in private tutoring between royal business and gradually losing touch with her friends, Amelia would have given anything to spend eight hours with other people her own age. Especially since public schools let children take a class in brewing potions, and Amelia’s parents wouldn’t let her near any magical substances since an unfortunate incident with a dog and a growth potion when Amelia was ten.
‘Oh you know…’ Amelia shrugged. ‘Eighty per cent of our teachers and healthcare professionals have gone abroad in the last five years and we can’t afford to train anyone new. There’s also a shortage of sorcerers who know how to bewitch the weather, so we’re in for a long summer.’ She scowled and chomped her pastry. ‘Oh, and the Earl of Star’s Reach spent half an hour telling me how he plans to convert an entire room in his house into a shrine to the gods of gratitude. Gratitude! He’d do better praying to the gods of lost causes.’
Shrines in the Kingdom of Mirrors were like pairs of shoes: everyone owned at least one, but to people who considered themselves fashionable, they were the ultimate status symbol. Each building housed a shrine to one god or another, each made from chips of mirrored glass or colourful tiles. Some were the size of a post box, others the size of a shed. Some people, like the Earl of Star’s Reach, dedicated an entire room in their house to their shrine, replacing all the windows with stained glass and filling the room with candles, incense and tiny prayer scrolls. The Earl fancied himself a priest and a magician, although the rest of the court fancied him a nuisance, especially when his attempts at magic resulted in a castle-wide evacuation.
‘Is he thinking of going for any particular design?’ Sarah asked. Her kiosk’s little shrine to the water gods was the size of a milk jug and made from blue glass chips. It sat on the till, which Sarah had bewitched to open only when she touched it.
‘The Earl wants a plain mirrored mosaic floor in the shape of his family crest to remind him of his respect for the gods of hearth and home,’ Amelia recalled. ‘But his wife doesn’t like to be reminded of her mother-in-law.’
‘Maybe she should pray to the gods for a new husband, then,’ Sarah suggested. ‘Or send him south to Scavenger’s Ruin. The Sapphire Dragon will take care of him.’
Amelia tried to laugh, but something stuck in her throat.
She finished her food at the communal iron tables, soaking up the atmosphere as the evening sun reflected off the mirrors on each building, casting the entire street in strange beams of light and duplicating the market one thousand times over. When she was little, Amelia thought that every mirror contained another world, where another Amelia sat, looking into another mirror.
The temperature was starting to drop, so Lumiere was coming alive. Children scampered around fountains while parents chatted at cafés. Amelia could hear restaurants getting ready for the dinner shift, lighting fires to roast lambs and goats on spits, and she could smell oregano and bougainvillea plants. A cicada chirruped somewhere, almost drowned out by a marching band performing at one end of Market Street. The band appeared to be in direct competition with an orchestra holding a performance at the other end of the street. Babies’ cries mingled with dogs’ barks as street vendors contended with everyone. ‘Salted olives, a jar for a silver coin!’ Amelia could get two jars of olives for a copper coin; there were more olive trees in the Kingdom of Mirrors than there were people. A wasp buzzed near Amelia’s pastry wrappings, close enough to count its legs. She waved it away. Another vendor hollered, ‘Feather pillowcases, plucked from swans this morning!’ Very few swans lived in the Kingdom of Mirrors. Possibly the manufacturer had skinned several pigeons.
It was well past time to go to lessons, so Amelia hauled herself from her seat and brushed her sticky hands on her dress as the loudest voice of all cut through the crowd. ‘Magical gold amulets—guaranteed to keep your marriage healthy! Just five gold pieces for two!’
Amelia stopped at the stall, waving another wasp away from her face. Anything for another two minutes of fresh air. ‘What do those amulets do?’
‘They spice up your marriage, Your Majesty.’ The vendor, a sun-wrinkled old man called Harry, bowed when he recognised her.
‘My marriage?’
‘Or your parents’ marriage!’ Harry seemed to remember who he was talking to. ‘Not that the King and Queen need any help in their marriage! I am sure they’re blissfully happy!’
‘Yes, blissful,’ Amelia agreed. She rubbed her temples. The enthusiasm was taking its time kicking in. ‘Couldn’t the marching band and the orchestra perform at different times?’
‘Course they could,’ Harry grunted. ‘But that would be too easy. The orchestra is starring in a musical.’
‘Remind me never to see it,’ Amelia muttered.
‘You might want to, Your Majesty, it’s about the war with the Sapphire Dragon.’
‘Why on earth would I want to watch a musical about the war?’ Amelia demanded. Why couldn’t people stop bringing it up? First Sarah with her joke, now Harry. For ten whole minutes as she strolled through Market Street, Amelia had forgotten all about the war her people waged against their unfriendly neighbourhood dragon.
Harry shrugged. ‘Search me, Your Majesty, I’ve never been much of a theatre person. Can I interest you in a shell for calming headaches?’
‘No, no, I’ll take a tonic later on.’ Amelia knew that Harry’s ‘magic shells’ came from Lumiere’s beach. Although blood red and very pleasant as a table decoration, they held absolutely no magical properties. Amelia didn’t have the heart to tell him she knew the scam: not everyone in the kingdom was a magic user. Amelia never quite got over the fact that her mother, Queen Hazel, excelled at casting protection spells, while Amelia, Nicholas and their father, King Emmanuel, possessed about as much magical ability as a pair of socks.
She left Harry there as he called into the market once more. ‘Magical shells! Endorsed by the Princess Amelia!’
Miraculously, Amelia arrived earlier than her tutor. Madame Louisa taught every subject on a different day in their little room at the very top of the castle tower. Ten floors up, Amelia could still hear the orchestra and the marching band battling it out. While she waited, she flicked through the pile of newspapers they had used for her current affairs lesson the previous week. There was the war, again, on almost every page.
‘The Sapphire Dragon razes another town!’ screamed one headline. ‘Is he heading north from his cave at Scavenger’s Ruin?’
‘King Richard of the Valley of Dreams sends more troops to the Kingdom of Mirrors’ aid,’ announced another paper. ‘Meanwhile, King Emmanuel has borrowed money from Queen Margaret of Stormhaven to pay for another siege at Scavenger’s Ruin, to force the Sapphire Dragon from his stronghold.’
‘King Richard’s troops are killed in a failed siege of the Sapphire Dragon’s lair,’ bemoaned the most recent. ‘The latest failed attempt to oust the Sapphire Dragon, who has laid waste to the south coast of the Kingdom of Mirrors for 20 years, brought the military death toll up to 32,892 troops, and the civilian death toll to—’ Amelia stopped reading. She knew the numbers already.
What really depressed her was that these newspapers could have been from any year in the past two decades, ever since the Sapphire Dragon blew in from the Western Ocean on a terrible storm. Villagers spotted him curled on the beach at Scavenger’s Ruin, a fishing town at the southernmost tip of the kingdom. According to survivors, his wicked blue scales reflected the sun and his wicked grey claws left welts in the sand. Fire spat from his nostrils as he torched every building in sight, along with most villagers. War was declared immediately, of course. There’s a saying in the Three Kingdoms: sticks and stones might break your bones but they don’t do squat to dragons, so you’d better bring something stronger.
Everyone was hopeful for the first few years. Hundreds of well-trained soldiers marched south each spring, although barely fifty would make it back, and most of those spent months in the Lumiere hospital being treated for horrendous burns. The Valley of Dreams, the Kingdom of Mirrors’ closest neighbour, sent troops and extra weapons. Dragons are creatures of habit and prefer to live in secluded, enclosed spaces, so the Sapphire Dragon existed mostly in the hard-to-reach caves below Scavenger’s Ruin, venturing out occasionally to hunt fish from the once-plentiful sea or to meet the latest contingent of soldiers. Once or twice a year he would fly north, razing more towns and extending his territory just a little bit closer to Lumiere. Within some six years of the dragon’s arrival, half the nation was inhospitable and hundreds of terrified families had fled to Lumiere. Others went further north still, to the Valley of Dreams.
Lumiere soon started to creak under the extra pressure from its new inhabitants. Tensions built up in crowded communities as the war dragged on. After a few more years of state funerals for fallen soldiers and emergency aid relief for refugees, someone cracked and threw a brick into the tent of a refugee family, starting the famous Midsummer Riots. Amelia remembered watching the carnage from her bedroom window as a terrified six-year-old, counting the fires that spread across the city. ‘Dad will sort it out,’ twelve-year-old Nicholas assured her. ‘He has an army.’
‘He doesn’t,’ Amelia argued. ‘They’ve all been eaten by the dragon.’
‘The Sapphire Dragon doesn’t eat people,’ Nicholas assured her. ‘He just sets them on fire.’
Amelia refused to go near a lit candle for weeks after he said that. Emmanuel and Hazel finally bowed to political pressure and began to borrow money from Queen Margaret of Stormhaven to train even more soldiers. They signed an agreement with the Valley of Dreams, allowing thousands of refugees to relocate to safer lands in exchange for access to the Kingdom of Mirrors’ ancient magical scrolls, something no monarch had allowed for centuries. Eight years later, the kingdom’s debts were crippling its economy and all those extra soldiers proved about as effective as a comedian at a funeral.
‘Your Majesty!’ Amelia jolted out of her reverie as Madame Louisa swept into the room. ‘Apologies for my tardiness. Let’s get started with some mathematics!’
Madame Louisa didn’t set particularly difficult exercises today —but then, Amelia recently balanced Louisa’s family’s bank account. Amelia scratched away at algebraic fractions, trying not to think about dragons. She glanced out the tower window. All the way up here she could see the entire city, nestled amongst the mountains and olive groves, temple spires sparkling. People would soon be making their way to evening prayers, if not just stopping for ten minutes to light a candle in the nearest shrine. If she had magical vision, which wasn’t unheard of in the Three Kingdoms, she could see around the coast all the way down to Scavenger’s Ruin. From this distance the road looked like it was scratched into the mountain by a dragon’s claw. Her fist clenched around her pencil. Would she ever go anywhere without being reminded that her kingdom was on its knees?
The pencil snapped. Across the room, Madame Louisa raised her eyebrows and handed Amelia another.
