Javier was interviewed after Yuzuru's retirement when he was staying for a skating seminar in Italy. He think Yuzuru make a graceful decision. Yuzuru was like from another world with skating running in his blood. What they talked during the old days and FaOI 2022.

(excerpt)

"Was Yuzu's announcement a surprise?" I would say yes and no to the question. He was probably thinking about it a lot. I think Yuzu must have spent a long, long time thinking about this.

「今回のユヅの発表がサプライズだったか、というのはイエスでもあり、ノーでもあります。だから彼も恐らく色々と考えているだろうなとは思っていました。ユヅはこのことについて、きっと長い長い時間をかけて考えてきたに違いないと思うんです」

(about Javier's retirement)

(In Pyeongchang) To my surprise, Yuzu burst into tears. He told me that he would miss being able to fight with me and that he would like me to fight with him more, but that he would respect and understand my wishes. I was surprised that he cried for me after training with me for so long. It was a very special moment, and I will never forget it.

「そうしたら驚いたことに、ユヅは涙ぐみました。そして僕と戦えなくなるのは寂しい、もう少し一緒に戦って欲しいけれど、でも僕の意志を尊重して理解する、と言ってくれました。これまで一緒にトレーニングをしてきた彼が、僕のために泣いてくれたことに驚きました。すごく特別な瞬間で、あの時のことは一生忘れないだろうと思います」

I knew that once I stopped competing, the amount of training I would have to do would go way down.

「僕の場合は、競技をやめたらトレーニングの量はぐっと減ることがわかっていました」

(before retirement) While training with Yuzu, I realized that I could not continue to train hard at the pace he did.

「ユヅと一緒にトレーニングをしていて、とても彼のようなペースでのハードな練習は続けていけないな、とも思いました」

I think that Yuzu also wanted to make a graceful decision while he was still at the top. The only difference is that he says he will continue to train.

「ユヅも同じように、まだトップでいられ��うちに潔く決断をしたかったのだと思います。ただぼくと違うのは、彼はこれからもずっとトレーニングを続けていくと言っていることですね」

We hadn't seen each other in a really long time, so we gave each other updates on what we had been up to. He asked me what I was up to, and I told him about my current activities, and he told me what happened to him.

「本当に久しぶりだったので、お互いの近況を報告し合いました。最近どうしているの、と言われて僕が今やっている活動などについて語り、彼は彼の身の回りのことを話してくれました」

I think it's amazing that he did the 4 axels and I really wish he had succeeded there. Then he would have made another piece of history. But every athlete has times when they perform their best and times when they don't. That's sports, and there's nothing we can do about it.

「彼が4アクセルに挑んだのは、すごいことだと思う。あそこで成功していたら本当に良かったのに。そうしたら彼はまたもう一つ新たな歴史を作ったでしょう。でもどんなアスリートだって、ベストな演技ができる時とそうではない時があります。それがスポーツですから、仕方ありません」

To tell the truth, I didn't know Yuzu very well at the time. I didn't have a chance to talk to him even though we were competing in the same tournaments. He could barely speak English, and I remember the first time we met at the rink, Brian (Orser) introduced us.

「実を言えば、当時まだユヅのことをよく知らなかったんです。同じ大会に出ていても、話す機会はなかったので。彼もまだ英語をほとんど話すことができず、初めてリンクで顔を合わせてブライアン（・オーサー）が紹介してくれたと記憶しています」

I don't get to watch other athletes that closely in competitions, but when we started training at the same rink, I thought, 'Wow, that's a great talent. I thought he had speed in his skating, and he had really good jumps.

「試合では他の選手のことをそれほどじっくり観察できるわけではないけれど、同じリンクでトレーニングを始めたら『すごい才能だな』と思いました。スケーティングにスピードがあり、すごく良いジャンプを持っていると思ったんです」

But he was already jumping four salchows. He wasn't as consistent at the time, but he had the technique.

「でも彼だってもう4サルコウを跳べていましたよ。当時はそこまでの安定度ではなかったけれど、技術はしっかり持っていました」

(during training together)

During the season, we are still focused and we often go on trips for matches, so it was during summer camp that we had the opportunity to talk slowly. He said many times, "Javi is good, especially your jumps are really good." I would say, "Yuzu is a good jumper," and he would say, "No, no," I said "Really, really," and we would compliment each other (laughs).

「シーズン中はやはり集中しているし、それぞれが試合で遠征していることも多いので、ゆっくり話をする機会があるのはサマーキャンプの時でした。彼は何度も、『ハビは上手い、特にジャンプがすごく上手い』と褒めてくれていました。僕は僕で、『ユヅこそ、ジャンプ上手いよ』と言うと、『いやいや』『ホントホント』などと、お互い褒め合っていましたね（笑）」

Sometimes I notice Yuzu is frustrated because he's not doing well, and I encouraged them by saying, "It's okay. You just did it. You can do it." Most of our conversations were about skating.

「たまにユヅが不調でイライラしているのに気が付くと、『大丈夫だよ。さっきできてたじゃないか。きみにはできるんだから』と励ましたこともありました。話をするのは、やはりほとんどスケートのことでした」

I always thought his jumps were really high and amazing.

「彼のジャンプは本当に高くて、凄い、といつも思っていました」

I really liked Yuzu in Parisienne Walkways. By putting his heel on the ice, I think he has established his own unique personality by making the unique movements. I also like "SEIMEI" skated in Pyeongchang. I could feel what he wanted to express as a Japanese skater. I think It's an important program for him.

「僕は『パリの散歩道』のユヅがとても好きでした。あそこでかかとを氷につけた、独特の動きを自分のものにして、彼ならではの個性を確立したと思います。それと平昌で滑った『SEIMEI』も好きですね。彼の中で、日本人として表現したいものがあるのが伝わってきました。重要なプログラムであるように感じました」

Yuzu’s body movements, as well as the expression on his face as he performs, draws the audience in. That power is unique to him. And of course, the quality of his jumps is one of the best in the world.

「ユヅの身体の動きもなのですが、演技をしている彼の表情が見ている観客をぐっと引き込む。あの力は彼ならではのもの。そして動きの全てに意味があるように見せてくれる。そしてもちろん、ジャンプの質の高さでは世界のベストの一人ですね」

(about injury)

I made a conscious effort not to push myself too hard, especially as I got older. If I wasn't feeling well, I would immediately tell Brian and change my schedule.

「また特に年齢を重ねてからはあまり無理をしないように意識していたこともあります。体調が良くないと、すぐにブライアンに伝えて、スケジュールを変えたりなどもしていました。」

There were times I worried if Yuzu would be fine or able to continue competing. But he is incredibly talented, and he always comes back and adjusts and wins in the short time he has to compete. That was Yuzu, like he's from another world. I think skating runs in his blood. One day of training for him might be worth a week for another human being."

「ユヅは大丈夫なのだろうか、もう競技を続けるのは無理なんじゃないか、と思ったこともありました。でも彼はものすごい才能があり、いつだって復活して、そして限られた短い時間で試合への調整をして勝つんです。それがユヅでした。まるで違う世界からやってきたみたいに。滑るということが、彼の身体の血の中に流れているのだと思う。彼の1日のトレーニングは、他の人間にとっての1週��分の価値があるのかもしれません」

It took me a long time to get used to not training for competitions. It was hard to get back into the pace of my life without a set schedule for myself. That's why I think it was a very smart choice for Yuzu to say that he would continue training even after he became a professional. On the contrary, I would like to ask Yuzu. How do you feel now that you decided to turn professional? I think you should continue to be active and do what you want to do. Whatever you do, I hope you enjoy it. I will support you.

「僕自身、競技のトレーニングをしない日々に慣れるのに長い時間がかかりました。自分のスケジュールが決まっていない中で、生活のペースを取り戻すのは大変でした。だからユヅがプロになってもトレーニングを続けていく、と言ったのはとても賢い選択だと思う。逆にぼくはユヅに聞いてみたいです。こうしてプロに転向することを決めて、今どんな気持ち？ って。これからも活動的に、そして自分の好きなことをやって行けばいいと思います。何をやるにしても、楽しんで欲しいと思う。応援しています」

Ice Lab @ Orchard Shopping Centre, Somerset. [Closed down]

Tried the injeolmi bingsu, which was alright but I'd be honest and comment that Nunsara's injeolmi bingsu was better. But the cafe was pretty spacious and they even have fake snow decor! Haha props to that.

Sorry the cafe had to end in a rather, tragic death.
