still reading through my hainish cycle collection, and i gotta say, vaster than empires and more slow is certainly an interesting addition. i think it's (so far) the single work of hers i've read that most represents the limitations and biases inherent to when she was writing, and herself as a writer -- positioning all the characters as essentially societal rejects makes it clear what her society did not value and had biases against. this isn't to say i did not enjoy it (honestly, my favorite of the short stories so far), but i could've done without the ableism and racism

#honestly ableism is the problem ive had most with her works so far #especially in the dispossessed -- we get passing mentions of 'Asylums' for (my memory is already slipping here forgive me)#iirc. people who commit crime and those who refuse to work ever?#i really wanted to know what an anarchic society does with the physically & mentally disabled among them but thats the most mention we get #:(#still really enjoyed both the dispossessed and vaster than empires though. like ironically my 2 favorites that were new to me #alas. the flaws #good thing i consume flawed media safely often and extremely well #txt #the hainish cycle #ursula k. le guin #vaster than empires and more slow
