Once upon a time, some dear friends gave us an antique trunk that their neighbors had given them that had once been their grandparent’s trunk. It wasn’t in the best shape but we took it home. Inside were treasures. I was like a kid discovering treasures in an attic. I found photographs of that family’s family. I don’t think they ever looked inside the trunk. I returned the photos that afternoon. There was a very old doll with a cloth body & china head, hard rubber arms coated & painted & a painted face. She was a little scary looking with her painted expression, but mostly because her hair was coming off & she was missing a finger. She was an oversized baby doll & one that was well loved. I found an antique baby dress & cap & dressed her & she didn’t look so scary…she looked sweet. Another friend gave us an antique Oran…those beautiful woven cane peaks, & she sat so proudly in it. The biggest treasure were these. Boxes & boxes of nickel silver forks, knives, spoons, iced tea spoons, demitasse spoons, soup spoons, & serving spoons. Some of them still in their original boxes. Some research indicates that the serving pieces were inside boxes of laundry detergent. If that’s the case, that woman did a lot of laundry. I love these. I use them all the time. I love the utilitarian shape of them. I love the weight of them. I even love the tarnish. Nickel silver contains no silver, but it's made from 60% copper, 20% nickel, and 20% zinc. Although it doesn't have any real silver, it can sometimes be silver-plated, which I hope mine are. And the fact that they are Roger’s nickel silver. The thin silver plating on the surface makes it even shinier and somewhat more durable. I just love them.
