"Do you know her?" brass, nickel-silver, copper, 2024. 5" x 2.5" x 3"

This is my first foray into hollow forms in jewelry! When I made this ring, I thought of my sister and how we are so connected in spirit, especially these days. She loves to cook, especially when lots of garlic is involved, so this is for her. It is meant to be worn with the bulb sitting on the tops of the fingers and the leaves floating above the rest of the fingers. It is almost exactly scaled to a real garlic, just a bit smaller.

Mini Melchior Trays – From Flea Market Curiosity to Vintage Treasure

I found these five little trays at a flea market near Riga. They were lying in a wooden box, almost forgotten — soft silver with a deep black patina, like something that once lived on a fancy table, then quietly slipped into memory.

At first, I wasn’t sure what they were for. Too small for serving... too elegant to ignore. But the more I looked, the more I saw possibilities: mint trays at a wedding, tiny platforms for rings or trinkets, holders for elegant shot glasses, or even a moody prop for photography.

Now they feel like little characters — each with its own surface story.

Once upon a time, some dear friends gave us an antique trunk that their neighbors had given them that had once been their grandparent’s trunk. It wasn’t in the best shape but we took it home. Inside were treasures. I was like a kid discovering treasures in an attic. I found photographs of that family’s family. I don’t think they ever looked inside the trunk. I returned the photos that afternoon. There was a very old doll with a cloth body & china head, hard rubber arms coated & painted & a painted face. She was a little scary looking with her painted expression, but mostly because her hair was coming off & she was missing a finger. She was an oversized baby doll & one that was well loved. I found an antique baby dress & cap & dressed her & she didn’t look so scary…she looked sweet. Another friend gave us an antique Oran…those beautiful woven cane peaks, & she sat so proudly in it. The biggest treasure were these. Boxes & boxes of nickel silver forks, knives, spoons, iced tea spoons, demitasse spoons, soup spoons, & serving spoons. Some of them still in their original boxes. Some research indicates that the serving pieces were inside boxes of laundry detergent. If that’s the case, that woman did a lot of laundry. I love these. I use them all the time. I love the utilitarian shape of them. I love the weight of them. I even love the tarnish. Nickel silver contains no silver, but it's made from 60% copper, 20% nickel, and 20% zinc. Although it doesn't have any real silver, it can sometimes be silver-plated, which I hope mine are. And the fact that they are Roger’s nickel silver. The thin silver plating on the surface makes it even shinier and somewhat more durable. I just love them.
