Too Big

He said he wanted to cut down the tree in his yard

because it was too big. Looking up at the majestic

king oak, I asked him, was there anything wrong

with it? Was it sick or dying, or splitting in two

such that it might splinter and smash his house?

He said, no, it was just too big; time for it to go.

A giant specimen, at least two hundred years old,

five feet in diameter, a hundred feet tall, branches

fifty feet wide, bearing brilliant leaves of scarlet,

a thousand acorns, home to dozens of birds and

squirrels and butterflies, having seen generations

of families play within its shade. But it had to go.

So I thought, sure. That makes perfect sense. Just

like the bison, the wooly mammoth, the sabertooth,

tiger, the dire wolf, the arctic bear, the rhinocerous,

the whale. All of them just too big. Too big to live.

Because that makes perfect sense. Yes. Of course.

Between the texture of the bark and the intricate branches of the tree, your vision becomes lost the more you try to focus towards the top. "An impressive tree by any standard, the Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboidesis) relatively carefree and fast-growing. Its fine, feathery leaves are certainly a standout feature, and even though this tree is deciduous, it produces rounded cones. The dawn redwood was long thought to be extinct — with evidence of its existence found among dinosaur fossils — until it was discovered alive and well in a rural, mountainous area of China. Connected

He said he spoke to the trees,

and they spoke back to him;

he didn’t really mean it,

just did it on a whim.

But little did he know,

what dialogue was worth,

for he just gained a trillion

more friends upon this earth.

sometimes I stand outside and throw my head back and spread my arms. Then I pretend the wind is an orchestra in a language I always hear but can never decipher. Then I sway my arms and the wind plays for me a song I’ll never know. The trees sprout legs and ballroom dance around me. The world wakes up over and over again with a dance and a song.
