Why I think Ramattra deserves a redemption arc

OKAY HEAR ME OUT. First of all, what I mean by “redemption arc” is a bumpy journey of self-discovery and inner peace akin to Zuko’s. I don’t think Ramattra will ever forgive humanity or join Overwatch. The end goal of a redemption arc that I want to see is one where he finds inner peace and forgives himself for his sins.

Exhibit A: It would parallel Zenyatta which is really cool because I love characters that are foils of each other and follow a similar path with an outcome opposite of the other’s and-

It’s implied that Zenyatta didn’t have the best circumstances before joining the Shambali. When Ramattra found him, he may have saved his life, as the “nearly got him killed” line in Ramattra:Reflections seems to allude to a dangerous situation. Ramattra also set him on the path of the Shambali, where Zen found belonging, purpose, and perhaps inner peace. Ram gave Zen a second chance and he turned his life around because of it.

(Side note: This may be why Zen was so adamant in helping Genji. He knew from experience what a second chance can do for someone. This makes Genji and Ram’s hatred for each other even funnier.)

It’s clear that Ram is not in the best mental state right now. I don’t think normal people attack the planet and subjugate their own people. I believe if Zen successfully reaches out to Ram and (somehow, idk we’re too early into the plot) gives him a second chance to go on a journey of self-discovery, and he does end up finding inner peace because of Zen, it would be a very satisfying payoff and poetic parallel. It would also lean into the implied thesis of Ramattra’s character arc: “You didn’t have to fight alone”.

Exhibit B: Throwing him in jail/killing him off would be a waste of potential

Yes, Ram needs to face the consequences of his actions. Yes, throwing him in jail is a realistic and satisfying punishment. But you know what else is a realistic and satisfying punishment?

Facing worse discrimination from the humans who hated you and hunted your kind to near extinction and also being cast out and feared by the very people you tried to save and now you’re left with the guilt and shame of your ultimate plan to help your people having failed and you’re left with nothing and nowhere to go. Seeing Ram struggle with these consequences, try and fail to be better, and finally achieve inner peace for himself despite everything, would be ten times more narratively satisfying than watching him rot in jail for 10+ years.

Exhibit C: The seeds are already in place

There’s already a lot of foreshadowing and word choice in Overwatch official media that implies that this is the direction that Ram may be heading towards. Hell, even Ram himself has literal redeeming qualities. In one of the Ram Dev Updates, it’s stated that the Narrative Designers wanted Ram to be “exciting, felt understandable, dangerous, and someone you wanted to get to know better”. In the iconic Invasion cutscene, there is a lot of stuff that Mondatta says to Ram, and his reply, “Perhaps, one day, we truly will be together again”, implies he once had hope for peace, which could be a key motivation in his arc, or could lead to a realization he needs. In a 2022 Polygon article, it’s explicitly stated that “players should not think of Ramattra as a villain, but an ‘antagonist’”, again, alluding to the possibility that he’s meant to have an arc. There’s also the fact that Talon is clearly being set up as the bigger, actual villain, and they’re cooking up some sort of plot that leads to their betrayal of Ram. Why else would Doomfist send Mauga, Reaper, and Sombra to steal Ram’s technology instead of just asking him for it? (maybe he did and Ram told him to fuck off)

Ok so, Ramattra gets a redemption arc. What happens? I DON’T KNOW! YIPPEE!! Exhibit D is that Ram is already such an unpredictable and complex character that his journey could go in any direction.

He could try to regain his following, he could atone for his sins, he could return to the Shambali, he could try to reconnect with humans again, he could be an ally of (not join) Overwatch and get to know them, he could wander the world and find the answers somewhere out there, he could see the errors of his ways and try to rebuild the world he destroyed knowing full well that it wouldn’t make people forgive him and he does it because his journey has led him to a path where he finally chooses to do things for himself and achieve the life HE wants and thus fulfilling the sacrifice and wish Aurora made for him, meaning he accepts his own sentience and finds inner peace! What makes the possibility of a redemption arc so fun and exciting is that anything can happen. It’s what storytelling is all about!

Why wouldn't you want that? And why can't I be a little delusional sometimes? If Ramattra ends up being thrown in jail or nuked or whatever, I will definitely be disappointed, unless I am horribly wrong and the foreshadowing is actually pointing to that fate instead.

♡ Lucio: Like Baptiste he wants an emotional connection to his s/o. Lucio is fine being in a relationship with no sexual intimacy, though he’d be completely ecstatic if you ever decided that’s something you wanted to do with him.

♡ Reinhardt: He’s a strong believer in chivalry, he wouldn’t dare try to be intimate with his s/o without their complete consent.

♡ Genji: He’d be patient in waiting for his s/o to be ready, Genji needs an emotional bond more than he requires sexual intimacy. There isn’t zero chance he wouldn’t, but more than likely he wouldn’t try anything until his s/o is ready.

♡ It really depends on which Hanzo we’re talking about. Young Hanzo would definitely, he’s brash and ambitious. Being the heir to the Shamada clan, and he’s take it as in insult if you were to do anything less that surrender yourself to him. Older Hanzo has come to peace with his past actions, and after the death of his brother he’s settled down a lot. He’d be willing to wait until you were ready, wanting it to be a meaningful experience for not only him but also his s/o.

♡ Rammatra: This one also depends on what his s/o is, varies based on if they’re an omnic or human. With an omnic s/o he’d see them as an equal, he’d be much more kind and considerate of their wants and feelings. With a human s/o they’d be more of a pet to him, he’d have no issue taking whatever he wanted from them whether or not they were willing.

♡ Junkrat: He isn’t very self aware when it comes to his obsession, he’s almost completely delusional about their relationship. To some extent he realizes you aren’t together, but he doesn’t care to let his thoughts linger on the fact. Jamison little issue with his s/o’s consent, he makes the act about them, he gets his fulfillment from it by giving rather than receiving.

♡ Soldier 76: Both prefall and current Jack would have little issue with it. He’s in a position of power, and you’re not, he’s a super soldier if he wants to he will. He’s learned not to hold onto guilt, so he won’t feel that for what he’s doing.

♡ Cassidy: He’s a very sex driven person, he can go a little while without it but he expects his s/o to give in to him eventually. His drinking is what leads to it most often, and his s/o can expect no aftercare from him once he’s done.

♡ Reaper: He’s a jealous and possessive person, even before the fall of Overwatch he has sadistic tendencies. Gabriel doesn’t need reciprocation from his s/o, not that he would enjoy it, he just doesn’t need it from them. While he’d be more rough in his Talon era it doesn’t mean he’d be much better before Overwatch’s fall.

Mirrorwatch: The Overwatch What If

This is for the mutuals and anyone who hasn't touched Overwatch in AGES. Overwatch 2 has been pumping out new content in monthly seasons, and here in Season 10, we have the Non-Canon Mirrorwatch Event.

{What is Mirrorwatch?}

A fierce fight between Overwatch and Talon rages upon Watchpoint: Gibraltar. And in a single moment, an unstoppable object would collide with an immovable force. A Punch from Doomfist against Reinhardt's shield so hard it shatters reality. Among its pieces, an alternate reality.

{Who's Who Now?}

Alignments have shifted in Mirrorwatch, Overwatch Agents are now part of Talon, and Talon Agents now Overwatch. But let's see who specifically, with some explanation as to why I think things changed

Overwatch

Overwatch is led by Strike Commander Ogundimu. It's likely in this reality this Doomfist was mentored by the First Doomfist, Adhabu "The Savior" Ngumi, As opposed to the canonical universe, where Akande was mentored by the Second Doomfist, Akinjide "The Scourge of Numbani" Adeyemi, who was the person who recruited him into Talon.

His second in command is Captain LaCroix. Whether or not her husband Gerard was assassinated, Lacroix joined Overwatch and climbed the ranks as their lead sniper, and I can tell you for sure, there's a lot of lore for her considering who she's fought with in canon.

The last Overwatch agent in this event is Agent Colomar. Overwatch likely had more involvement in the displacement of orphans after the Omnic crisis, So instead of finding power in manipulation and information, she found power in helping others improve. Plus her Hack symbols have smiley eyes

Talon

In Mirrorwatch, Angela Ziegler takes the moniker of Vengeance as the leader of Talon. Not much is know as to why she chose this path, all that we know is that her nefarious plans are for humanity's future. Vengeance Mercy is this Season's Mythic Skin, and so has variations to her design, and during the event, her resurrection has changed from reviving to detonating fallen souls.

Second to Vengeance is Arch-Commandant Ana. Once again, there are some details I'd like to go further into later, And much like Doomfist of canon, Ana believes the world has grown complacent.

The first Talon Agent I'll talk about is Reinhardt, taking the name Fallen Knight, which implies at some point he defected from Overwatch to Talon's side. Judging by his voiceline when eliminating Ana, He doesn't like being leashed around.

Talon Zarya. I got nothing for Zarya being a Talon Agent other than Volskaya Industries being evil and loaning her out to Talon.

Now this is menacing~ Talon Brigitte has some real lore to theorize about. Either she's been raised under Talon if Torbjorn was sided with Talon to begin with, or she enlisted with Talon after learning Reinhardt defected to it. Also look at Mitzi, looking all evil and forboding.

And lastly Operative Oxton, where to begin~ A few fan comics have head-canoned that Lena's chrono-accelerator was faulty/damaged, leading to an explosion that killed Emily, which would be quite the dark backstory to join Talon in revenge against Overwatch. This actually plays well with how her Blink ability works in the Mirrorwatch event, where she take make more teleports at the cost of her health. And if it isn't obvious by her pose, she's sort of the Reaper equivalent.

Other Affiliation Changes

Genji and Symmetra have both landed themselves in Australia as Junkers

Kiriko and Hanzo have joined the Shimada's rival Clan, the Hashimoto.

Zen is part of Null-Sector this time as Z-EN Destroyer, with Ramattra taking his place as the monk who wanted peace between Human and Omnic.

{Changes to the story}

Of course with Affiliation changes, there are lore changes. Here are the main two that are most prominent.

LaCroix VS Amari

In canon Overwatch, Ana loses her eye after hesitating to shoot a brainwashed Lacroix turned Widowmaker. But if you noticed earlier, Arch-Commandant Ana doesn't wear an eyepatch. In Mirrorwatch, because of the shift in alignments, It's Widowmaker who loses an eye in the shootout and she has a cybernetic one to replace it.

Widowmaker VS Tracer

Back in the Alive Cinematic, Tracer fails to stop Widowmaker from assassinating the Omnic Monk and leader of the Shambali, Tekhartha Mondatta. But in Mirrorwatch, instead of Mondatta, Ramattra becomes Tekhartha of the Shambali Omnics and is assassinated by Tracer. And if one of her elimination lines against Tracer says anything, Widowmaker was the one who failed to stop the assassination.

So yeah, that's why I said Widowmaker is like the Tracer of Mirrorwatch, getting the most lore to pull from.

There's definitely possiblity there could be more Mirrorwatch skins, if we go by an interview between Twitch Streamer Skiesti and Overwatch 2's Art Director, Dion Rogers. Vishkar Lucio, DJ Symmetra, Junker Winston, Overwatch Reaper, Talon Soldier: 76 were all ideas that were cut.

Okay, I’m-a rant because I’m mad. 

TL;DR: The old lore was GenjixMercy, but the new lore designer has decided that continuity doesn’t matter and that grooming is actually okay because his friend’s ship gets to win, while aggressively attacking and blocking fans for the pushback on Twitter. This is after all of the other Overwatch backlash in which fans have said that at least the lore is still good/fun/interesting, now being catered to by someone who has Pharmercy fans as friends instead of continuing lore as-is.

I will start with: I am a queer lady who likes queer ships. HOWEVER. They are erasing the evidence of a straight ship with a queer ship, which would be FINE if it was a story thing, because stuff happens in life. However,  the story and lore that is already established makes this ship not queer, but straight-up grooming. 

Some lore, by Michael Chu (former Senior Designer of Lore for Overwatch)

So in Overwatch, there is a straight ship called Gency, or EmerGency, between Mercy, the medic, and Genji, the cybernetic ninja. It’s honestly very cute, as the story between them goes: 

Genji, the second son of a mob boss, is embarassing the mob family, and is “killed” by his brother. In reality, he is stabbed within an inch of his life, and left to die. Overwatch, the multi-national team of heroes, finds Genji half-dead, and manages to save his life with experimental cybernetics implanted by the medic Mercy. He hates her, hates his implants, hates his life, wants to die. 

But he’s also pretty pissed at his brother, so he joins Overwatch and begrudgingly begins to learn how to use his cybernetics to train and become a hero for good, to both get back at his Mafia family, and specifically to fight his brother again. During this, there is a lot of physical therapy (professional, not flirty) where they talk about a lot of things, including the state of the world at war, cybernetics, family, redemption... And it’s implied that they get a very trusting relationship out of everything. 

However, Genji is still grappling with his identity as a mostly-cybernetic person, so he leaves Overwatch to go train with the omnic monks (that is, sentient robot monks, including another champion named Zenyatta) to come to terms with being half human and half omnic. During this, Mercy and Genji exchange letters, and in many voice interactions are either flirting, caring about each other (crying each other’s names if one of them dies in battle), or teasing each other. It’s all very above-board, very sweet, and heavily implied. There’s even two Valentine’s Day interactions, which other characters do not have. In fact, the only other character with an interaction (when this debuted in 2019) was Hanzo, Genji’s brother, chiding him for buying chocolates. 

Cut to now. Michael Chu has left Overwatch and Blizzard, and now we have a new Senior Designer of Lore named  Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie. Gavin (his name is long, forgive me) has been aggressively blocking everyone on Twitter who mentions Gency, which at this point is implied canon as far as interactions/comics/background goes, and aggressively promoting Pharmercy, which is Pharah and Mercy. It has been noted that this person is friends with an aggressive Twitter user ClearTogether, who has been noted for being toxic with fans of whatever isn’t her ship, and has explicitly been catering to them. 

There is also evidence that this non-employee fan has been given lore and game updates that have yet to be released, 

Now, the problem with this other than the weird fan thing, is that Mercy has known Pharah since she was a kid. 

Everyone in this image is an adult with the exception of Pharah, the little girl. 

Now, that’s fucking creepy. Mercy is like 20 in this photo, and Pharah is no older than ten. And while it has been like fifteen/twenty years since this photo was taken (evidenced by the fact that Reaper (the hooded guy) Ana (arms around Pharah) Soldier (Blonde guy next to Ana) Reinhardt (muscles) Torbjorn (beard) and Cassidy (cowboy hat) are old enough to be mostly gray, people ship Pharah with Mercy because A. They are good together in team comp, and B. Mercy ages slowly due to her healing tech. 

But aging slowly is just biologically. She is still, canonically-in-human-age, much much older. She has many voice lines toward Pharah that comment on A. Working with her mother/how proud her mother is of her, and B. How much Pharah as grown since she was a little girl. Another controversy is, some of these voice lines are being taken out.

I’ve done the research, but they have more, and it’s really creepy to see this being pushed as something sweet, especially since we know if Mercy was a dude, we’d all be crying foul. (Also Overwatch has plenty of canon queer characters *without grooming in them*! Soldier is queer and has a partner. Tracer, a younger hero, is a lesbian and her girlfriend Emily has shown up in comics. (She is not a hero, and neither is Soldier’s partner, so they are not shown.) Lifeweaver is a new champ that is written as an MLM (man loving man, not multi-level marketing, lol) so they are aware that representation is important. (You can still bitch about Overwatch dropping new representation whenever a new scandal comes up, because fuck Blizzard.)

....Honestly, the reddit will have more to say that I can, because I’m really just reporting what I’ve read there, and I know people will come at me which is annoying because I am JUST THE MESSENGER, but it is what it is.

Okay, so I really love Yut, because of his design and character traits and stuff, but I really hate him too because he ruins a lot of lives, but in general, he's such a great antagonist in your stories. I know you've got some long stories going on, but is it okay to write a fic where Reaper finally snaps because Yut wants him to kill McCree and the wraith destroys the Omnic? I just want to see Reaper being done with all this shit Yut puts everyone through, especially Genji.

Yut always knew and Yut always had a contingency plan in place for any perceived problem that could arise.Despite that, Reaper knew that it was impossible for even the omnicto plan for every second of his life and have something in place to dispel an attack.

There were points where he wasvulnerable.

Reaper leaned against the wall in therec room, his posture tense, paying only half a mind to the Talonagents quietly talking around him. His attention was focused on thetick of the old clock on the wall. It would be four hours until hewas expected to go on a mission against Overwatch, a mission in whichhe had been told to make sure McCree was brought in dead or Reaperhimself was to be consider a liability. The sort  f mission thatReaper knew Yut was sending him on just to entertain his own cruelfancies, as usual, but also to “test” Reaper's sense of“humanity.” The thought of it all made Reaper's handsclench and his shoulders hunch. Never in all the world had a moredespicable piece of hardware than Yut been crafted.

Today though, Reaper was going to makesure the bastard was put down like he should have been years ago.

The minute hand on the clock seemedto be ticking slower and slower with each click and all the while,Reaper felt his nerves grow. His mind was abuzz with whisperedworries, that no matter how well he planned this, Yut would stillknow somehow. He always knew. Another part of him though was pushingthose thoughts down. It was all a part of the persona Yut builtaround himself, that idea that he was omniscient like some sort ofgod.

Mind tricks, after all, were Yut'sforte. Reaper knew the moment he let any sort of apprehension or fearsink its claws into him was the moment he would hesitate for thesingle second that would throw everything into disarray. Yut didn'tknow anything of what was to come. He had to believe that.The clock finally hit theappointed time and Reaper pushed himself off the wall where he hadbeen brooding and moved swiftly into the hallway. No one spared him asecond glance, they never did. To anyone in the base, he seemed to begetting ready for his mission. He paused for a moment , pressing tothe side of a corridor, just out of sight as a battalion of troopsmoved by with Widowmaker in the lead. Picking up the rear of thegroup was the hunched figure of their newest “recruit”. Yut's“prodigy” as it were, his little assassin stolen from the Shimada and his loyal student.

That was two individuals far from Yutwhen he was brought down and the two most likely to interfere withthis whole plot of treachery Reaper was about to enact. No one neededto get hurt, no one but Yut. Reaper didn't try to hide his presence as he entered the room, that wasn't part of the plan. Eventhough the fallen monk didn't know everything, he was more than alittle sensitive to even the tiniest noise, even a breath was enoughto have the omnic aware of an intruder within his vicinity. Thiswhole plot hinged on playing Yut at his own game of deception,approaching as an ally and revealing his hand only at the lastpossible moment.

Yut stood with his back to him, at easeas watching the screen flicker and move faster than any human mindcould perceive. The omnic didn't even bother to turn around toaddress Reaper when he spoke, his  voice a soothing, calm almost kindsounding hum.“I thought you had a mission to go on?” Heasked idly.“I do but you didn't give all the details, didyou?” Reaper responded, crossing his arms. “Oh? Whatdetails do you think I left out?” Yut asked, now turning around,head tilted curiously.Reaper kept his arms crossed andposture lacked, cocking his head to the side, “What is the realpoint of having us go after McCree? The man is a drunk. Barelyfunctional. Yet you have us chasing him when we got bigger targetslike Jack Morrison or the Overwatch to be concerning ourselves with.Doesn't make sense tactically,”

“He is part of Overwatch and what yousay may be true, humans, Reaper, are emotional creatures. Some peoplemay not be useful, but they mean a lot to so many. McCree is afulcrum in their group, one who holds them together,” The omnicfolded his hands together, his tone chiding, “Are you finding itdifficult to kill him? My word, you've grown so very soft. First withGenji, now with McCree,”He was being mocked and Reaper felthis shoulders tense but he didn't drop his arms from where they werecrossed overh is chest, staring down the wretched bastard before him,“What you said can be true of anyone in Overwatch. They are allclose,”“Ah, that is true! A little close-knit family,”Yut chuckled, “Something we are lacking in Talon, aren't we? We allseem to not trust each other so fully!”The monk turnedaway, back to the console and reached to idly press a few keys, “Butreally your concerns matter not Reaper. You have your orders and youhave an American stereotype to put in the ground or are you going tobail on this one like you did with the cyborg?”Yut onlyglanced a bit over his shoulder, watching Reaper as the mercenaryshifted, dropping his arms to his side and turning towards the door,“Genji was different,”“Different because you developedmisplaced feelings for him. It is better to live as the wise man than die the foolish hero,”

“Let go of your humanity,” Reaperdrawled, his tone bitter as he quoted what Yut said more often thennot as he made his way to the door, “How about you try and findsome for a change,”The words caused Yut to begin to turn, almost curious at the sudden lash back. As he did, Reaper was alreadyturning away from the door, shotgun in hand and firing off a barrageof bullets. The fallen monk managed to avoid a few but two shotsconnected, one in the right shoulder and the other into his torso.For a human, the second shot would have been lethal but an omnic hadno organs or critical systems that would bleed out from such hits. Ifanything, all it did was cripple Yut. That was not to saythat made it any easier to kill him. The monk didn't botherto speak, fury crackling in his form as he gathered up energy abouthim, electricity crackling at his finger tips ready to be unleashedas Reaper already threw himself forward into a roll, barely dodgingthe arch of lighting that lashed out where he had been before. Theomnic, wounded as he was, simply began to levitate, already moving onthe attack.“I can't say this is surprising,” Yut finallysaid as he launched another attack at Reaper, “I expected you to bethe rebel of the group, the one who couldn't let go of the past.Unable to commit again to any cause just like in Blackwatch,”Reaperducked behind cover as he tossed his used up shotguns away andsummoned up a pair of new ones. I want to go sit in the forest with Bastion and meet all the wildlife. Not one of us verbalizes the same way, but we can all be friendly and share a magical moment together anyway.

I’m well aware of the saying that “if you want something done you should do it yourself,” but I do think this is something I encounter very little in general and thus could be more widespread. Especially compared to the amount of romantic writing. There’s nothing wrong about writing something romantic, I just like imagining loving on everybody without implying or requiring anything more.

Hanzo tends to be a conservative man most of the time. He doesn’t hate the beach but it’s hard for him to feel relaxed while being so exposed. It’s easier with everyone around; no one is going to jump on all of Overwatch. It helps him relax and start to have some fun.

He doesn’t realize that you’re wearing a swimsuit until he hears Tracer compliment you, turning from watching McCree try to play beach volleyball. His eyes go wide when he sees you, face heating up within moments. McCree whistles once he sees where Hanzo is looking, calling out a greeting to you.

Hanzo isn’t avoiding you per say. He just feels like it’s best to give you space and not make it seem like he’s trying to hover. You’re free to wear whatever you want and he doesn’t control you. He’s looking respectfully. In reality, he’s been staring at the back of your head most of the day, seeming more like a stalker than a boyfriend.

You corner him after lunch, dragging him off to talk. He refuses to look at you until you force him to, his face still red. I'm going to talk about why I think that though Cassidy was friends with the other Blackwatch agents, they were never really friends with each other.

Because that's the vibe I get from their interactions.

Moira and Reaper are obviously somewhat close but it's obvious that it's just a patient-doctor relationship. There isn't really anything personal in their interaction other then medical stuff and some lines talking about their history.

With Moira and Genji they hardly interacted in Retribution and when they did it was more of a general statement, and in general pre-game interactions, it the same a with Reaper, general medical conversation.

And with Genji and Reaper, though they might have been friendly it's very obviously shown that Cassidy was basically Genji's only true friend in Blackwatch. Not only that but we can assume that Genji didn't talk to Reyes at all after Blackwatch was suspended.

Looking at all of that then looking at those three's interactions with Cassidy there is a very obvious difference.

I've gone into how close Genji and Cassidy are but the basics of it is; it's heavily implied that Cassidy was the only Blackwatch member that Genji talked to after BW was suspended, Genji canonically told Cassidy about his family and what he went through, Genji actively says that Cassidy is like a brother to him. Yeah it's safe to say that Genji was closer to Cassidy then he was ever to Moira and Reaper (and thank god for that-).

Again I've gone into how close Cassidy and Reyes were to each other, Cassidy actively challenging him on missions, Cassidy knowing right before the shot that Reyes was about to pull something, them calling each other by their first names, Reyes being confirmed to have helped train Cassidy, Reyes saying he'll need Cassidy's support during the Rialto mission. I could go on.

Cassidy and Moira are sarcastic with each other and seemingly teamed up against Reyes when he did something stupid, they also play off of each other well in Retribution. Not only that, their interaction in game is a lot more personal then Moira's interactions with others, especially Overwatch agents. Cassidy sounding somewhat genuine when he says he misses her and Moira throwing more of a jab then a threat or insult like she does with other Overwatch agents.

In summary; If the Blackwatch strike team was in a normal setting they would basically that one friend group who only hangs out because they're friends with that one person. The only other time they interact is on business otherwise.

i was rewatching the "alive" overwatch short last night and was thinking, bro zen probably doesn't have ANYONE to vent or just have a little comfort after mondatta was killed. like i know he's got most his shit together but mondatta dying after he left must've messed him up at least a little bit

Well, as was confirmed in the "London Calling" comics, Reaper's attack on Watchpoint Gibraltar and Winston's subequent Recall, and the assassination of Mondatta happened on the same night--so in the context of Genji and Zenyatta traveling together, that's really a double whammy. Since Zenyatta is traveling alone in "Stone By Stone" it's possible the death of Mondatta and the Recall prompted Genji and Zenyatta to part ways--Zenyatta embarking on his own sort of pilgrimage to try and figure out if he wants to return to the Shambali to try and reconcile his and Mondatta's differing visions for the organization, and Genji going off... probably to try and get Hanzo's head out of his ass (Genji's "Choose a side" line in dragons I feel implies Genji is talking in the context of Overwatch's Recall--but he knows he can't exactly recruit Hanzo.)

As far as Zenyatta's coping and grieving go, obviously his spirituality is a massive element of his character, and I do think the pilgrimage Satya found him on was his own means of grieving. Sometimes grieving is surrounding yourself with loved ones, and sometimes it's taking some time and re-centering yourself now that this person who was once part of your world is no longer in it. I won't deny that the latter does sound lonely... but at the same time... I understand the "Group grief as smothering" feeling so...I don't think Zen would be ready to plunge back into the Shambali if he doesn't know how Mondatta's death affects his role or even who he is now.

It was all he could do to re-center himself, return to the sites where the Shambali beliefs and the great Omnic enlightenment began, and maybe befriend and heal who he could along the way.

...Maybe Symmetra helped more than she realized.

Head canons for Gabe and Jack raising Hana and Jesse

- In line with a previous headcanon on this blog, Hana picks up on languages fast, so Gabe likes to teach it to her so Jack gets frustrated. Living with Gabe has taught Jack to pick up a Spanish dictionary.

- McCree is closer with Gabe than he is with Jack, but Gabe pushes McCree harder than Jack does because Gabe wants to see McCree be the best he knows he can be. McCree sometimes finds this overwhelming and likes to cool off with Jack when he has a quarrel with Gabe.

- Hana and McCree like to team up in their mischievous schemes, while Jack and Gabe have the option to retaliate. This often leads to full on wars.

- Jack and Hana butt heads more often than many people would think. He doesn’t like it when she acts impulsively, and she doesn’t like it when Jack thinks she can’t fight her own fights. Hana views her “impulsiveness” as a standard growth reaction to being raised in that particular environment

- Hana likes to steal everyone’s clothes. She takes McCree’s flannels, Jack’s shirts, and Gabe’s hoodies and beanies. The others have stopped trying to rid her of this habit since all previous attempts have failed.

- It took a while for McCree to adjust to living with three other people. Being around Gabe, who taught him to always be self-reliant, has made him somewhat of an introvert and likes to isolate himself. It’s difficult for him to ask for help when he needs it. Hana, while less of an isolationist, is a good sister to McCree and will sit with him and ride the silence out with him.

- Jack is less well-adjusted to raising two people than he likes to admit. His stubbornness tends to get in the way of things, especially since Gabe is equally as stubborn.

Fully love the idea of D.Va being Trans and Echo being Genderfluid. Also Sanjay being trans is not something I have seen before, but I love it! I'm also pretty sure that Bars is also implied to be trans? Or at the very least it's unintentionally implied.

As for fully canon, there is another non-binary character named Lynx-17, who is featured in Zarya's comic and who I hope is introduced as a support at some point.

Also I fully agree that Venture can't being the only non-cis playable hero currently. Personally I've always HC Cassidy as Trans, I also know that Reaper being genderqueer is also a common head canon. The characters you mentioned as well are high on the list of those theories and head canon's as well.
