New Releases for July 16, 2024
Here are the new releases we're watching for this week.
Grief in the Fourth Dimension: A Novel by Jennifer Yu Amulet Books
A moving and unique speculative YA novel about the afterlife and the unexpected connections that can be made in death In life, high school classmates Caroline Davison and Kenny Zhou existed in separate universes—Caroline in one of softball practices and family dinners; Kenny in one of NASA photo books and late-night shifts at his parents’ Chinese restaurant. But after their deaths, they find themselves thrown together as roommates in a mysterious white room—one that seems to exist outside of time and space, shows them their loved ones’ lives on a large hi-def TV, and grants their wishes with a sardonic sense of humor.
As Caroline and Kenny watch life continue to unfold back on Earth, they realize they can influence events through radio signals, psychic mediums, and electromagnetic interference. In their efforts to console their families, they also start to understand the tragic depth of how their lives and deaths were connected and how to help their families—and themselves—heal from the losses.
The Ping-Pong Queen of Chinatown by Andrew Yang Quill Tree Books
Perfect for fans of Ben Philippe and Mary H. K. Choi, this charming, insightful YA novel follows two high school students who form a complicated, ground-shifting bond while filming a mockumentary. On the eve of Felix Ma’s junior year of high school, his parents hires a college admissions coach to help him find a marketable activity. Cynically trawling for extracurricular excellence, Felix decides to start a film club at school.
But then he meets Cassie Chow, a bubbly high school senior who shares Felix’s anxieties about the future and complicated relationship with parental expectations. Felix feels drawn to Cassie for reasons he can’t quite articulate, so as an excuse to see her more, Felix invites Cassie to star in his short film.
While the project starts out as a lighthearted mockumentary, at the urging of Felix’s college admissions coach, who wants to turn the film into college essay material, it soon morphs into a serious drama about the emotional scars that parents leave on their kids. As Felix and Cassie uncover their most painful memories, Cassie starts to balk at opening her wounds for the camera.
With his parents and college admissions coach hot on his heels, Felix discovers painful truths about himself and his past—and must decide whether academic achievement is worth losing his closest friend.
Portrait of a Shadow by Meriam Metoui Henry Holt and Co. (BYR)
A missing sister. A mysterious boy. And a painting that holds the truth beneath its peeling edge…
Inez is missing, but missing things can always be found.
Mae knows this as a fact, even though the police investigation has come to a standstill, even though her parents are moving on. But when she goes to clear out her older sister’s studio, she finds a mess of research and a white canvas that seems even older than the ornate frame it is set in. The closer Mae gets to the canvas, the more difficult it is to pull her eyes away from its mottled surface, its heavy layers of white paint, its peeling top corner she is tempted to pull to see what’s beneath. But she doesn’t. Not yet.
Mae decides to trace her sister’s last steps in the hopes of finding answers, certain that Inez’s disappearance is related to the painting. And she knows she is desperate enough to let the strange boy who claims to have been Inez’s neighbor tag along. Even if his good looks don’t help distract from his avoidance of her questions. So begins a scavenger hunt piecing together what they can find from what Inez left behind. One that leads to centuries-old questions best left unasked and secrets best kept in the dark.

Cyberchase headcanons: Post-Rebirth
I've gotten back into the cyberchase fandom and have come up with small points to add to a future fic. Unfortunately, I don't have any ideas for a plot/central conflict. So I figured I'd just post the small ideas here:
-After Eileen, Motherboard will have 2 more kids: a boy named Christopher Andrew (shoutout to fluffic3 for the creation of him) and another girl named Alexa.
-Wicked will somehow redeem herself and get back together with Hacker.
-Hacker, Motherboard, and the doc will be attending family therapy sessions together. Digit may join too sometimes.
-Matt and Inez will marry and start a family. They'll have one wedding on Earth and another in Cyberspace
-Hacker will invent some sort of machine to make cyber citizens look more like humans, so that our favorite cyber characters can visit Earth. The inspiration for this happening will be the announcement of Matt and Inez's first child, as it wouldn't be very safe for a pregnant woman to fly through a portal.
-Inez will write a book about her adventures in Cyberspace and publish it on Earth where it'll be a best seller.
-Jackie will become a famous singer as well as open her own fashion line.
-Motherboard will start a charity to help troubled teens.
-When he's not inventing, Hacker will continue to be a successful artist.
That's all I've got for now. Hopefully some day I'll think of a central conflict or if someone wants to continue the series based on what's here, you're free to do so.

Albertina Walker (August 29, 1929 – October 8, 2010) was a gospel singer, songwriter, actress, and humanitarian.
She was born in Chicago to Ruben and Camilla Coleman Walker. She began singing in the youth choir at the West Point Baptist Church and joined several Gospel groups, including Pete Williams Singers, The Willie Webb Singers, and the Robert Anderson Singers. She was influenced by Mahalia Jackson, her friend, and confidante. She was popularly referred to as the “Queen of Gospel Music”, initially by such notables as the late Reverend James Cleveland and Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr, for her outstanding achievements within the genre after the death of Mahalia Jackson.
She founded The Caravans, enlisting fellow singers from The Robert Anderson Singers (Ora Lee Hopkins, Elyse Yancey, and Nellie Grace Daniels). The Caravans’ membership has included: James Cleveland, Bessie Griffin, Shirley Caesar, Dorothy Norwood, Inez Andrews, Loleatta Holloway, John McNeil, Cassietta George, and Delores Washington.
She is featured in the book entitled Who’s Who in Black America as well as other volumes related to the Golden Age of Gospel Music. She received several keys to various cities and was honored at the Chicago Gospel Festival where a bench bearing her name was placed in downtown Chicago’s Grant Park. The City of Chicago paid tribute to her by renaming 35th and Cottage Grove “Albertina Walker and The Caravans Drive”. She was conferred an honorary Doctor of Letters Degree by the Chicago Theological Seminary, an institution of the University of Chicago.
She co-founded the Gospel Music Workshop of America along with James Cleveland. She lent her support to many charitable organizations such as the United Negro College Fund, American Cancer Society, National Council of Negro Women, Nation of Islam’s Million Family March, One Voice: “A Fight Against AIDS”, NAACP, and Operation Push. In 1988 she founded The Albertina Walker Scholarship Foundation for the Creative and Performing Arts. Her foundation offers financial assistance to college students in the form of scholarships to further their education in the field of music. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

the official @shaxqueer list of "shakespeare i've done"
*updated 5/6/24*
All's Well That Ends Well
Antony and Cleopatra: saw a performance that friends were in, which was cool because nobody does this play
As You Like It: saw a performance that a friend was in, would love to be in one day!
Comedy of Errors
Coriolanus: I really really want to direct/act in it (thanks @lungthief). only read it so far though
Cymbeline: no, but had vague plans to direct it before the pandemic
Hamlet: Holy moly yes. 2019-2020 Claudius/Ghost/asst. director; 2021 Rosencrantz/Marcellus; 2023 Ophelia; 2024 fight choreographer. Plus ones that didn't get off the ground (2021 Player Queen; 2020 Fortinbras/Marcellus).
Henry IV, Part 1: A personal fave, but only read (once with @socialshakespeare!). Prince Hal is my dream role.
Henry IV, Part 2
Henry V: Saw friends perform
Henry VI, Part 1: Watched as part of Hollow Crown, read as part of Rose Rage
Henry VI, Part 2: ditto
Henry VI, Part 3: ditto
Henry VIII
Julius Caesar: Another fave. Will be fight choreographing this summer (2024).
King John: I played a character who played Constance and Arthur in a different show, does that count? I don't think anyone's gonna put on King John anytime soon...
King Lear: Was going to be involved in a Lear-adjacent show as Goneril and fight choreo, but it was cancelled
Love's Labour's Lost
Macbeth: Directed/performed an audio adaptation (2020, Malcolm/Banquo/Lady Macduff), acted in another (2022, Malcolm/Lady Macduff), and acting/fight choreo again (2023, Duncan/Lady Macduff). Plans are to fight choreo again (October 2024).
Measure for Measure: My problematic fave that I want to direct/act one day.
The Merry Wives of Windsor: Acted/adapted (2022, Mistress Ford/Slender)
A Midsummer Night's Dream: Acted/co-directed (2019, Titania/Hippolyta). Doing fight choreo in 2024.
Much Ado About Nothing: Did fight choreo in 2023, acting in 2024 (Don Pedro/Verges + other tracks)
Othello: Only read.
Pericles
Richard II: If you ask me what my favorite Shakespeare play is, unprompted, this is what I'll say. One day I'll direct/act in it. One day.
Richard III: One pandemic reading that never materialized (2020, Anne), and one audio drama that thankfully did (2024, Anne again).
Romeo and Juliet: I have the dubious honor of having played Gregory, Sampson, and Abraham... all at once (2018, different show). 2023 Nurse/Montague.
