Somehow in all the time I've followed this blog I never realised Ahmose was gender selectable. Time to go through the asks and make another MC then.

Fun fact, Ahmose was officially a unisex name in Ancient Egypt. Men and women could both get that name (there were actually lots of names like that). It means something like "born from the Moon". The moon god was Iah (pronounced like yaah), so the original name was probably closer to Iahmes or Iahmos. I have no idea where the English "Ahmose" spelling came from. Maybe Greek?

Ahmose's gender will also change a few things in the story, unlike with other gender-selectable characters. For example, a female Ahmose is not the direct heir to the throne, but they are ONE of the official heirs. Narmer has nephews too, and they are first-in-line in that case, Ahmose only comes after them. The MC's gender who is romancing a female Ahmose will also have different consequences later. Not romance-breaking consequences, but... things... might turn out... differently... for the MC in the future, especially if the MC happens to be a man 👀👀👀

Dropping in to share a heartwrenching Eragon headcanon.... how Brom found ways to bond with his Son, and Eragon's early years in Carvahall.

Say, when eragon was a baby, Selena had just left Carvahall after telling brom about his son. Dear old Brom is so happy but sooo sad that he can't keep Eragon with himself, and it is bittersweet to know he will have to watch from afar because he can't ever tell Eragon the truth of his lineage...

And because Eragon is so widdle right now Garrow or his wife Marian won't take him out of home until he is a bit older... Brom takes flowers to Eragon just with the excuse to see him. He told Garrow and Marian that he's new in town and he's been hearing everywhere that a beautiful new baby has been born in Garrow's family and he is a sentimental storyteller who felt tempted to come congratulate. And that day, just a few days after Eragon's birth, his father finally sees him. It makes him very emotional, because baby eragon is very cute. And all he can manage to say "he puts stars to shame with that face and a name made for glory!"

Garrow and Marian are astonished to see him cry and he has to make up an excuse that he lost his own son long ago.

"I don't know if this is how all storytellers are, but no man should be this lily livered" Garrow whispers.

"Oh, but he lost his own child, imagine how you'd feel if we lost our Roran..." Marian retorts.

The couple pity him for it, and Marian says, "you can visit him whenever you desire friend." Garrow doesn't have a very high opinion of the storyteller but he seems kind says he'll allow it on occasion. Brom thinks they will feel like he's intruding if he came anytime he wished to be with Eragon which was all the time and they might see him as a bothering fly, and be suspicious of him so accepts their favour knowing he can't exploit their allowance.

So mostly he would scry Eragon when he was alone, or take an occasional hike up the hill once a month with the reason of "keeping his old legs still working young" to come say hi to Eragon, but sparingly.

When harvest time usually came, before Selena left Eragon there, only Garrow would do the harvest, and Marian would care for lil Roran... but when harvest came sometime before eragon turned a year old, there was to be some wedding in the village and Marian had promised to help the other ladies prepare. So she had no option but to take Eragon and Roran with her, and she's finding the kids hard to manage as her attention is very much split between her work with the food and to whomever who is just a little free to watch the two boys for a few minutes, with eragon crying loudly and Roran running about nobody has peace.

Brom came amidst all this as the family of the bride to be married had asked him to marry them for he was fairly old and the reputation of a goodwilled man who came to their aid when they needed someone to read the vows. And he heard all the commotion happening in the back with Roran banging pots and pans and Eragon crying and he tells Marian he could take the kids to his little house and watch them till Marian is done. No one is sure how an old man could care for two children let alone a baby, but since everyone is tired of the clamor they are grateful that Brom takes them.

Roran finds two spoons in his house and he is again hitting them together and baby eragon cries so brom casts a spell so that only roran will hear the joyful noise of the spoons. He calms Eragon too with a soft glowing werelight that Eragon gets fascinated by and wants to hold the blue orb. And later that afternoon, he tells the boys stories till nightfall about Rider's city and dragons, with Eragon in his arms. Even roran listens to his exaggerated speeches.

When Marian comes to pick them up, Brom insists that she leave the kids with him every harvest time for he much enjoyed their company and even Roran behaved. That astonished her. And Eragon seemed happy too for he cried as soon as Marian took him from Brom's arms. So after that year she'd go leave them at his place during the harvest, or when the harvest was plentiful and Garrow needed a hand (much to hurt Garrow's pride for he was the "I can manage it alone" man) or she would tell Brom to come to their place to watch the kids. And some years went by in this fashion, when harvest time was the best month of the year.... and once Roran was 10 ish he'd help Garrow in the farm and Eragon was left at Brom's home and Eragon used to have much to tell Brom about Squirrels on the farm or curious things he looked at, and Brom would tell him more tales only to be met my half a dozen questions the moment he began. Once Eragon and Roran were old enough, he stopped using magic here and there around them.

He really cherished those early years, and it hurt to never tell Eragon the truth. And when eragon was 10 he was allowed to wander how he wished in town. Ever since forever Marian and Garrow would tell the kids never to go too far in the valley near the Spine and Eragon grew ever curious to what was so dangerous about them.

One day he wandered in there, trying to be brave and got lost in the Spine and nearly chased by a wolf. His family was worried sick, and Brom brought him homethat day to their relief. He had luckily scried him before and rushed to Eragon's aid as fast as he could.

Roran would tease him about it for some time. And Marian died sometime after that incident. But after that frightful experience, when Eragon was 13, he vowed to be braver and practiced archery and and before the winter he'd go hunt. Those who knew he ventured into the Spine were mostly afraid of the prospect. But Brom was proud of him. So very proud of his brave boy who grew up having his father and never knowing.

If Terry's father had cut him out of the inheritance, where do you think the money would go? Everything about Terry screams only child to me, at least, but do you think he had siblings? If so, where do you think he falls in that dynamic? Oldest, middle, or youngest?

I think he's an only child too. Sole heir.

That type of thing.

Do we really think that if he had siblings he'd speak about having no legacy whatsoever? Do we really think Terry Silver, insanely devoted as he tends to be when he truly wants to, wouldn't be here embracing nieces, nephews and extended biological family, for example? Do we think he would be here trying to make random ass Robby Keene and Kenny into surrogates for something he doesn't have well into his old age if there was any possibility of even one blood related sibling of his existing somewhere out there who happened to have...you know...actual Silver offsprings? I don't think so. I think he's all alone, and it is proven in a great many behavioral patterns of his. Has always been the one progeny his family had. Furthermore, well into the twilight of his life he's the only one remaining too. There's nobody else. Never has been anyone else. Might even add new dimensions of explanation to his care for John Kreese (and Ponytail).

They are, quite literally, the only brothers he ever had.

But, when he was born, in equal measure, I think he was planned, very much wanted and the fact that he was an only son was also pre-calculated as an outcome. There's no accidents for people of wealth and power. Most things they do are deliberate, tactical and practical even when they ''bashfully'' might pretend they ain't to cultivate an air of relatability (after all, Terry himself must've gotten these traits from someone, because nothing exists in a vacuum). Where insurmountable generational money is concerned, I like to imagine that Terry's parents wanted just one child for the sole reason of not cutting their own dynasty into multiple pieces; it's easier if they don't, simply from a legal standpoint. Ask any lawyer. One heir for one legacy. That's the way to go. Which is why Terry Silver going off to Vietnam might've come as quite a shock (or such a huge risk, if we believe his father sent him there under an ultimatum). If he would've had multiple siblings, especially male ones, surely, the blow and the stakes wouldn't have been quite so high because there would be always someone to take over all family businesses instead of him. But, if Terry was the only one, well then ---

I also in no way think Terry was ever cut out of his inheritance.

Where does this notion even stem from?

For some reason, and this is nowhere confirmed, so take this with a grain of salt, but I envision whoever his father was, he was, according to my imagination anyway, too much of an self-absorbed, prideful egoist to simply just...give away dynastical levels of wealth willy-nilly like that. Dare I say, it would take someone insanely charitable and with saintly levels of selflessness to do something like that even if out of spite, and I don't believe whoever Terry Silver's father was was anything like that --- the charitable part, anyway. Giving his only son threats, ultimatums and conditions --- sure. But, cutting him out entirely and writing off his own money to someone or something else? I don't think so. I think, when it came down to it, the process of Terry's inheritance ran very smoothly for all intents and purposes and that if it did not, Terry himself was simply willing to lie, cheat, scam, fabricate and step over literal corpses to secure what belongs to him by birthright. Like it was intended to. He was always meant to inherit the Silver family fortune and so he did just that. By any means necessary. After all, he was the only Silver available.

Was there any other competition or choices stacked up? Didn't think so.

I am not saying that zuko is sokkas substitute for kya. or they look in any way similar! The whole concept here is that something was happening at the moment, be it how they were laying in bed, how the hair pooled over the pillow, or how sokka was able to hold onto it. It just brought sokka back. It triggered a memory, and suddenly he relived a brief memory. Making him suddenly miss his mother again. hope you enjoy!

Alright, final thoughts on Inheritance.

Eragon continues to be the guy of all time. I love him. He really displayed a maturity in this book that I think supersedes anything we've seen of him in all the previous books, and just like... His strength really is that he is compassionate and thoughtful towards everyone. Even Murtagh, now, too. He had the realization of how close he was to sharing his fate, sought to understand him, and that was ultimately what led him to realizing his true name had changed, tearing down Galbatorix's wards, etc etc. I don't know that I could properly articulate everything about him here, but Eragon definitely became the hero he needed to be by the end of the series, 100%. He is the only person who could've possibly thought of the final piece of magic to defeat Galbatorix. Even the dreams of starlings are equal to the worries of a king. Ahhh, it's so good. ❤️ I'm so proud of him.

On the other hand, Barst was some bullshit. Bro. Like, on the one hand, it was a very good climactic battle for Roran to participate in, and his triumph was the perfect culmination of his character- cunning in battle, cunning in strategy, the intelligence and charisma to sway everyone around him into cooperating and working together, sheer determination so intensely strong that he was able to crush and Eldunarí with his bare hands. His role was perfect! But Barst as a villain was kinda... Well, first of all, he came completely the fuck out of nowhere. He wasn't mentioned at all until they were already on their way to Uru'baen, and then he was only MENTIONED. They didn't hype him up enough before the actual battle in my opinion. And ONE human and one Eldunarí being enough to beat the QUEEN OF THE ELVES in hand to hand combat...? I mean, I guess that could work but... Ehhh... I dunno. It kind of felt like an excuse for Islanzadí to die, and Roran to triumph more than anything. It was cool, but it was probably the weakest part of the plot in my opinion.

That said though I think it's pretty safe to say this was my favorite book of the series. I'm having trouble recalling all the iconic shit (I took a pretty long break from reading about halfway through the book) but there was soooo much cool stuff in here. The Nasuada being kidnapped and being helped by Murtagh arc is GOLD, Vroengard was amazing, and all the battles were SO well written??? I need to study these books more closely just to learn how to write compelling fight scenes. Honestly, it's gripping stuff. I was on the edge of my seat, despite knowing how everything turns out.

Nasuada is amazing, Arya is amazing, Saphira is amazing, Roran is amazing, MURTAGH is amazing... I think I already liked basically every character in this series going in, but I somehow like them even more now that I've read it again. Everyone is so good, and interesting, and I want to be everyone's friend. I think the only character I liked less this go around was Orrin (sorry to my Orrin stan friend out there). That said, though, I don't dislike him, I think I just went from positive to neutral about him.

Orrin honestly just didn't get nearly as much screen time as I remembered? We only see him a handful of times throughout the book and each time the only thing he's doing is getting drunk and making an ass of himself, though... Idk, he also has a point? He has his own unique point of view, and his own unique experiences that lead him to his own ideas of how to conduct things, and it is definitely kind of true that like no one ever really listens to him or takes him seriously, despite being the King of Surda for w while at that point. I don't think there was a more graceful solution to the division of power/territory after Galbatorix was killed than what was decided upon, because like... Realistically, Orrin was never gonna be high king. He had good reason to assert for the throne, sure, but actually ascending to the throne? That is SUCH a far reach for power, unless the aim was to assimilate Surda in and have all of the humans under one crown. Nah, Nasuada giving up territory and ascending to the throne was the better choice, even if I do empathize with Orrin's point of view. It seems like Nasuada did as well, because even though she was persistent, she seemed to be gentle and sympathetic with him. He even had his line about like... "Why do you even want to do this?" "None of you would understand." Idk. Very interesting, but not tremendously notable compared to others, and he definitely was a bit of an asshole at times.

Murtagh my beloved my BELOVED I'm honestly just gonna make a whole separate essay post about him because his shit is Complicated™️ but one little note it was such a small detail at the end but I love that he said to Eragon "Hey check in on Arya about killing Shruikan. It couldn't have been easy for an elf to kill a dragon." And Eragon hadn't even THOUGHT of that and Arya probably would've been the last thing on his mind but he still was just so thoughtful. He is thoughtful like his brother and he cares so deeply and AHHH!!! And actually I want to see him and Arya be buds. I think they would have a cool dynamic. And also I love that he never once hesitated to acknowledge Eragon as his brother and just wanted to be with him and finally Eragon also acknowledged him as a brother too that last scene with them was just so good 🥹

Also I love how Thorn's like only spoken line in the whole series (until November) is to boop Eragon on the forehead and say "Hi. Thank you for not killing my rider. :)" and Murtagh is just like "Yeah thanks for that. 😒"

Love how quick Saphira and Fírnen hit it off lol. They really played tag and wrestled for like five minutes and then were like "Alright we're gonna go fuck like now see y'all later ✌️" And Eragon's like "Is this??? Okay???" And Saphira's like "Pfft dragon's don't mate for life 🤷‍♀️" Their little romance was so cute.

CAN WE FUCKING TALK ABOUT QUEEN AND RIDER ARYA??? That shit is by FAR the wildest endgame decision Chris made because like. That. That's so fucking. Oh my god??? Like, one, poor Arya!! She just wanted to be a rider and have adventures! She probably would've either spent her time happy herrying eggs across Alegaësia, or she would've gone with Eragon to Mount Arngor, but you can NOT convince me that she would be particularly happy as queen. She's grieving the loss of her mother that she barely had a relationship with, and denied the other eleven leaders for a full week before they convinced her to do it!!! Girlie!!! You deserve to be happy!!! And, two, the obvious point of holy shit that is such an enormous power imbalance in favor of the elves. Like, there is a REASON the riders were separate in the first place!! And, you know, Galbatorix JUST died and now there is another rider/monarch and it's the ELVES who have historically been both the most powerful race, and the race with the best relationship with the dragons. And Arya is the ONLY RIDER LEFT IN ALEGAËSIA!!! Because Eragon is gone (and stubbornly convinced that He Shall Never Again Return Oh Woe Is Him) and Murtagh is... Also gone to an extent. He at the very least holds no political power. Basically everyone hates him, and those that don't can't do more than, like, pardon him, for whatever that's worth. I just can't see this not rubbing people the wrong way, and not coming to an eventual head. Nasuada and Arya are both great, but I just get the feeling there is going to eventually be some sort of conflict between them, no matter how much neither of them want it. I do think Arya is perhaps the least corruptible person, other than maybe Eragon but... I don't knowwww maaaan it's complicated!!

Also I regret to inform everyone that rereading the last little bit did make me ship Eragon and Arya a teensy tinsy itty little bit. Just a liiiiittle bit. Like idk the last fairth and the telling each other their true names and calling each other their true names and Eragon's grief at leaving and his vow to love her forever and her insinuation of maybe one day just got to me alright???

There were a lot of cool magic things in this book! Like the pocket space that the Eldunarí were kept in? Cuaroc's body? More shit that I'm forgetting? God I would just love, like, a magical encyclopedia or something idk. Lots of cool shit. And artifacts!! I want to learn about more magical artifacts.

Also at my Galbatorix stan mutual? I'm a certified Murtagh Girlie™️ and therefore obligated to hold a grudge but like. I do get it. He is a... Very competent villain.

Alright I think that's it for now but. Wow. Man oh man. There is a reason I love this series. I'll probably think of some more things to talk about later, and I'm gonna be participating in the Big Bang, and I'll probably post about The Fork, The Witch, and The Worm as I reread that but yeah!!! Can't wait for November!!

look. here’s the thing. If you have a relative or family friend or some such who does a craft/hobby/skill that you’ve “always wanted to learn” you should ask them about it. Your grandma does embroidery and you want to learn? Sit down one day, or call her, or write a letter, or something, and say “I am interested in learning this craft.” There’s basically zero chance that Uncle Francis is gonna refuse to teach you about his model ships. Grandma is THRILLED to show you her quilting. Ms Barbara from the church bake sale WILL teach you how to make the fudge that made her second husband propose.

your friends and contemporaries are also a tremendous resource, and you should ask them too! But there’s just no replacement for the expertise of someone who has been knitting for sixty years. Part of this, also, is that older crafters can often give you materials to help you start, and your broke millennial friends usually can’t. My mom has more wool than she will ever use in her life, and she knows it. When one of my friends wanted to start knitting, my mom just gave her this gorgeous silver handspun yarn she’d made but wasn’t attached to. Yarn like that is expensive! Handspun yarn from someone who has been spinning for thirty years doesn’t often happen to beginners! And starting with good materials is better than starting with bad, because it helps you develop taste and a sense of quality more quickly.

Experienced crafters are often able to help you avoid learning bad or damaging habits—as a teenager, my sewing teacher spent a lot of time teaching me how to do things so that I didn’t get repetitive stress injuries (like she did). They’re going to be able to lend you books, send you ancient angelfire html pages with the most exacting instructions on earth, show you the good places to get crafting supplies that aren’t am*zon.

But you have to ask. Do not wait until these people are dead, and then say “I wish I knew.” You have to do it now, while you can.
