rewatched madoka magica again today bc i fucking hate myself and to absolutely no one’s surprise i went through all five stages of grief in a single evening

#let’s talk about sayaka miki for a second #genuinely the fact that her whole character is centered around tragedy almost to a shakespearean extent #she’s selfless and brave and values her justice and righteousness above all. calls herself an ally of justice #in fact i think it’s rather intriguing how her whole character is centered around “justice”#her story being a more twisted retelling of the original little mermaid #how she is initially portrayed as a very heroic and confident character even before becoming a magical girl. always shielding madoka #selling her soul to heal the boy she loved out of a selfless desire to see him well again #her being absolutely distraught abt being robbed of her humanity and betrayed by kyubey #she combats this harrowing realization by immersing herself in her duties not caring that she is slowly deteriorating in the process #becoming numb with pain and fighting recklessly and psychotically trying to drown out the pain #finally coming to the sickening conclusion that humanity doesn’t deserve her saving and she succumbs to a fate of her making #last words being “i was so stupid” which trumps her previous statement of “there’s no way i’d regret this”#ALSO? the fact that her costume and weapon are symbolic of a knight. she rly portrays this hero of justice who will protect and defend ☹️#i think abt the fact that homura said that sayaka’s wish was so selfless it was only a matter of time before she died #sayaka being the example of what happens to magical girls who go through the entire cycle and eventually become witches is so sad to me #genuinely just like. sick and twisted #very very fucked up.#characters who have their own misconstrued interpretation of “justice” or who are centered around justice in general.#you will always be dear to me.#sayaka reminds me a lot of akechi in some ways ngl #harboring an almost idealized vision of justice but it slowly rots and festers and corrupts their hearts the more immersed w it they become #actually losing their sanity when they fight bc of how much pain they’re in but refuse to acknowledge it until they break #refusing any help and wallowing in misery despite having ppl who love them and want to save them #last words are those expressing regret for being such a fool. for being ignoring #being used by yhe main villain as a stepping stone towards their true goal. they were merely a pawn #also doomed in every version of their reality. always doomed by the narrative no matter what choices they make #i have a type i fear #HAHAHAH ALSO the fact that they’re both dressed so regally compared to everyone else in their respective series #meant to portray them in a virtuous and princely light. only made more apparent by the sword being their weapon of choice #i’m gonna shut up now but they’re soo eerily similar its unnerving tbh 💀

the interesting thing about we are is that i believe it's the first bl i've ever seen that truly has one main character. there is a reason why phuwin is the most overworked of them all and why he jokingly complained about the fact that pond wasn't suffering nearly as much as he was, even though he is his on-screen partner. and there is a reason why phuwin said that peem is also the audience in a way because he kind of gets to witness and react to almost everything that happens in the series.

the world of we are is built around peem: it's him and his boyfriend and his best friend and his best friend's boyfriend and the rest of his friends and also his boyfriend's friends. even the things that are seemingly not connected to peem in a particularly direct way are still somehow influenced by him or perceived by him, e.g. tanfang happens because phum agrees to help tan hit on fang in return for meeting up with peem, and then when tan spills the beans about them dating, peem's reaction is centered slightly more than anyone else's, even though there are people who are closer to fang and similarly close to tan in that scene. and though we get insight into phum's life too, for instance, that still somehow circles back to peem, e.g. most phumfang scenes are them literally discussing peem or talking about their parents, which still comes back to phumpeem, as phum's family problems have a huge effect on the boys' relationship.

peem is the sun of the show, and the rest are planets revolving around him or moons of the planets revolving around him in one way or another.

#maybe slightly hypocritical of me to be like 'and i'm fine with that!' cause my favourite characters are the main character and his bf #i lucked out there #but structurally this is very interesting to me #and i think this is the reason why we are manages to center friendship better than almost any other series #because peem specifically is the main character as opposed to peem and phum for example #so there is none of that initial disbalance that obviously exists when two characters who are romantically involved are mains #they don't necessarily need to put extra effort into remembering about friendship and friend groups #because the series is focusing on what is important to peem #which is his friends and his boyfriend in equal measure obviously #we are the series #archer speaks

#arya stark #asoiaf #a character centered around family and /pack/ who spent the entire story wanting to return home to/with her family isn't #going to end up with a family of her own (outside of siblings) because she doesn't want to be a trad-wife...okay #she was 9 years old on the run and worrying about how to fix Weasel's hair can we bffr for two seconds #Weasel latching onto Arya's leg...Arya using her name as an alias in Harrenhal...that's literally mother and daughter #impact so great she has her future love interest taking care of kids in her memory when he initially wanted to leave weasel #which is funny because people always want to project onto Gendry as the /family man/ type who has to convince Arya when it's the opposite #Arya is going to have a romance and family as a non-conforming woman on her own terms and I think that's beautiful #the unfeeling detached persona y'all try to project onto her is never going to stick she literally thrives off of community #it's very obvious when you speak on a character without having read their chapters btw

#my initial thought about this centers around medical stuff esp in America #I ruthlessly advocate for myself wherever I can with my medical situation. because I deserve that and I deserve to be treated right #it is incredible how many providers/doctors treat you like shit and get away with it #and/or lie #in a medical climate like that it’s absolutely necessary for me to be my own biggest advocate #and it’s necessary for you too!!#trust me I know it can be really hard. it’s not an easy thing to do by any means #but it’s worth it. you need to be your own biggest supporter sometimes #like in my situation I sometimes feel like a burden for voicing that I need help with something #when in reality that isn’t true at all

laios and kabru being very explicit narrative and character foils of each other means you're primed to expect some extent of honesty and candor from laios at every turn throughout, even if it's to negative effect, while your impression of kabru means you expect his every action and word to bely ulterior motive or manipulation, even if it's out of good intentions. and how thoroughly this is subverted in the end, when kabru is forced by pressure and circumstance into painfully, awkwardly honest confession and conduct, forced to stand back and spectate instead of trying to pull strings and control. and laios rises up out of nowhere with an underhanded scheme so shocking and thorough it tricks everyone, and suspends them into inaction and speechless disbelief, clearing his path to the throne. i just think it's neat how they're foils and opposites until they embody each other's core traits at some of their most pivotal developmental moments

#idk if i was the only one but i initially assumed kabru was introduced like that so the two would have some sort of race to the throne #not even because i thought kabru was underhanded i just thought that's what she was setting up with their two opposed parties #with the same common goal but vastly different ways of going about it and clashing personalities #i really thought the narrative subversion would be priming us for golden chosen one laios all along and then kabru swooping in at the end #but instead it was indeed laios in the end yet with no shortage of surprises and satisfaction imo #i like it a lot more this way for both of them. kabru suits a quieter background role where his communicative skills take center stage #and laios has the kind of simplicity and humility that means he can be guided by his people and court on matters beyond his reckoning #rather than centering his own and risking tyrannical or apathetic leadership #thus kabru gets what he wanted all along. gets to have his say and opinion. to represent humanity's needs and see to them all #and have a king who is kind and learning to communicate with and understand his populace and those around him #dungeon meshi #laios #kabru
