Hii Shelly! Been reading your blog and it's extremely informative, so thank you for that! Anyways, i was really wondering what are your favourite songs from MFS! Thank you!
Hi there!!! 😁✌️
Hmm ….. that’s an interesting question 🤔. OK, my list changes with times I must say. There was a time when I used to listen to the album 虚言NEUROSE everyday during my daily commute to work as I liked ZERO Gravity and ROOM very much. I used to like What’s My Name? from BONEDS split album a lot too. Apart from the 1st song in the following list which is a crucial song to me, the rest are songs that I’ve noticed I tend to repeat every time I listen to them nowadays.
WARNING: I will be mentioning Taka and OOR a lot here. Read on to understand why.
1. 最終回STORY [Saishuukai STORY]
youtube
This is the most important MFS song for me because THIS is the song through which they stole my heart at the height of my “love affair” with OOR back in 2013. The one that turned me into an MFS fan. Don’t get me wrong, I still am an OOR fan. It’s just that I was also looking for something else I wasn’t getting from them. A certain kind of aggressiveness. Not necessarily had to be appealing to the commercial mass market. Something more metal yet still melodic and accessible. I was in love with the song March of Mephisto by Kamelot at the time and I wanted something that leaned more towards that. Then, I heard 最終回STORY. BAM! I found what I was looking for 😍! Different from OOR. Played it on repeat that night and it became the most played song on my phone quickly. I love everything about it and the MV, which somewhat hides the band members’ faces, is just right for it. It makes us focus on the amazing music and not their pretty faces.
* Though I feel Hiro somewhat ruined it when he swang his mic at one point in the MV (one short second of a movement that his Onii-chan is famous for is enough to tarnish Hiro’s image for life 😖), but overall especially the angles that the video was shot, more than makes up for that “oops …” moment 😊.
2. 終レクイエム [Shuuen Requiem]
I do love string sections anywhere and the orchestral arrangement intensifies the song’s melancholic melody. Furthermore, I like how musically, this one leans more towards the work of older rock artists from HYDE’s generation than the younger OOR kind of crowds. It reminds me a lot of my favourite song Gekoukka by Janne da Arc from the anime Dr. Black Jack.
While I understand Hiro’s intention with BLACK RAIL, this one has a lot more depth and is far more revealing of his feelings about being cyber-bullied by some of his brother’s fans. I talked a lot more about it here.
3. 君のいない夜を越えて [Kimi no Inai Yoru o Koete]
Part of Sho’s musical works for Ochanomizu Rock. Musically, it’s safe and sweet. While it wasn’t love at first listen to me but thanks to the drama series, I got drawn more and more towards it. Upon finding out that Hiro cleverly inserted a lyric line that clearly mentions “my first story” which also seems to answer why he and big bro Taka appear detached in public, the song then totally etched itself on my heart. I wrote what I thought about that “hidden” message here. Despite the crazy accusations about him hating Taka, Hiro once again wants us to decipher all the clues he left here and there indicating how he carries his big brother in his heart very much ❤️.
4. FAKE
Surprised to see this one? This one is in a league of its own to me. I wrote my thoughts on it back in 2015 here. OK, this one represents the time when I was adjusting to the fact that Hiro was no longer a boy when I first saw the trailer. How he had blossomed into a man. I remember that day very well. My hands felt cold and my heartbeat was racing, telling myself, “He’s not a baby anymore. Accept it,” 😮.
Tumblr media
Just look at how he flirted with the viewers through the camera lens 😍.
He ended it with alternate wink of one eye! Oh my kokoro ❤️❤️❤️
Tumblr media
The song also has a different and sexier groove that sets itself apart from other MFS songs. Listen to those crunchy rhythm guitars 😙!! My favourite part is when they put Hiro’s voice through that “groveling” vocal effect about 1 min into the song. Come on, how can I not find that sexy 😉? You don’t often get to hear Hiro sounding masculine, thanks to his high-pitched natural voice. So, this is where the right voice effect works very well to enhance the man side of him. I also love how schizophrenic the song arrangement is. How it twists to different turns one after another. Weird but good weird 😉. Whether you like the song or not, you have to admit that this song is only one of its kind in their repertoire as they have never made another song that sounds like FAKE again.
* Some fans compared the chorus to OOR’s Never Let It Go but still the overall feels of both songs are worlds apart. The former is an arena rock anthem with a soaring chorus. The latter is just weird but a deliciously sexy groovy kind of weird.
youtube
5. The Puzzle
The song that didn’t impress me AT ALL during the trailer. Then they released the video on STORYTELLER in full. Wow! Suddenly I knew how to appreciate it. You can feel the raw feelings and vulnerability they exuded with that video. The video was recorded at their 1st public performance after the lineup change. It was a period of MAJOR adjustment especially for the 3 youngest members Hiro, Teru and Kid’z. Hiro trying to hold back his tears mid-song, Teru still playing under Sho’s shadow and Kid’z (who was still worrying about fans’acceptance) doing his best to prove his worth by elevating the song through his own style of drumming. I almost feel like Kid’z was making his drum beats “sing” with Hiro at certain parts.
* For those just joining STORYTELLER Club, you can watch The Puzzle MV only after being a member for 90 days. Be patient, OK? It’s worth waiting to see Hiro’s raw pain when he sang the line “boku dake / only me”.
6. BOOM
I love heavy sounding bass lines which this song has in abundance. TQ Nob for your awesome work! What a pity it was not made into an MV. To me, this song is a missed opportunity for MFS to show the world especially the skeptics that they really do play a different kind of music from big brother band OOR. Where the big bro is more Good Charlotte & Yellowcard, this one has Limp Bizkit running through its veins. Different leagues. Fred Durst would be proud 😉
7. 悪戯フィクション [Itazura FICTION]
It’s dark and lyrically intense!  I wrote about what I think the lyrics are about here, here and here. Also, why I think it inspired the lyrics to LET IT DIE here. Then how to not fall head over heel over that drumming ❤️? Turned out it was the most challenging arrangement to Kid’z from that album and the one he worked the hardest on to get it right. Hmm …. does that mean I can now trust my ears to detect quality work? Hehe 😁. That sounds like bragging but, from the start, the drumming had been the part that drew me to this song 😊. A song meant to be performed in large halls/arenas.
8. 不可逆リプレース [Fukagyaku REPLACE] acoustic version
The reason? My mind likes to imagine Taka singing with Hiro on this version. Somehow I think the gentler music arrangement fits to bring the two brothers’ voices together onstage. Imagine them singing the lines “… I will follow you … follow you ….“ and “keep you close to me …. close to me ….” to each other. But, I want to see them both together onstage NOT because I think it would be an explosive collaboration. Instead, I want to see the “tears fest” that would happen on that stage. My mind also likes to make a bet who from each band would cry first watching them. My bet ….. from MFS, it’s a toss between Nob and Teru. Then from OOR, it’s Ryota. Am I sadistic or what 😮? Wanting a song to be performed just to see people cry 😄?
9. REVIVER
I love how somewhat 80′s rock and old school this song is. I talked about that in this post. Even the MV’s aspect ratio is old school! Teruki shines here 😊. Proudly wearing an Ozzy Osbourne T-shirt. Basically declaring where his musical influences came from. OK. I don’t need to repeat REVIVER because they actually made TWO equally excellent versions of it and now they added the orchestral version too. Aah …. MFS loves me 😍!
Tumblr media
Of course, like the rest of you, I love ALONE, LET IT DIE, Missing You etc. Special mention for AWAKE which I call “the song Hiro has never screwed up Live”. An older song Warning always makes me happy too. Another special mention is If I Am which everyone else seems to find lame but I, on the other hand, think that it has an epic acoustic potential LOL. Did you all see how dead and quiet the crowd was when they performed this song in the ITSUWARI NEUROSE Tour Final DVD 😂? Yeah, I think the guys need to revive the song with a different arrangement.
Sorry this got too long 😮

Rei Reviews: Konosuba Season One
Tumblr media
(aaand here is my review of the first season of Konosuba! I had a lot of fun writing this review and watching this anime! I’m hoping on posting more reviews on this account in parallel to my art because I’ve always wanted to write more of these I would also love to hear some feedback from you guys! what did you think of Konosuba if you watched it? did my review convince you to watch the anime? any tips that I can write better reviews? do comment them bellow~as for the next show I’m planning to review, it’ll either be Voltron: Legendary Defender or Michiko to Hatchin)
I don’t think it should surprise anyone when I say that one of, if not the most influential anime to come out this decade, is Sword Art Online. Whether you like it or hate it, there’s no denying that this show gathered a lot of attention and popularity. After all, its initial premise tells of a seemingly, average teenager who gets trapped in a videogame only to become the one of the strongest players and get all the ladies. The premise had a lot of appeal to its demographic and the anime industry realized this, which led to a significant increase of anime that shared a lot of elements that made SAO appealing both good and mostly bad.
And when a certain subgenre of a show starts becoming a trend, parodies of the subgenres will start appearing. And Konosuba just happens to be one of them. Konosuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World, was produced by Studio DEEN and aired in the winter season of 2016. It was adapted from a light novel of same name which was written by Natsume Akatsuki.
The Substance Konosuba’s main character is Kazuma Satou, a video-game loving hikikomori (the Japanese term for a shut in), who rarely leaves the house unless he’s buying a new game. In one of said shopping trips he ends up losing his life when he tried to save a girl from getting run over by a truck. In the after-life, he meets aqua, a powerful goddess and she gives him the chance to be reincarnated in an RPG -esque fantasy world and become its savior from the powerful demon king with an overpowered weapon she will bestow him.
Now, I bet that so far, The show’s premise sounds completely cliché BUT there are two aspects of this scene make it completely subvert from the norm:
1) It turns out that Kazuma didn’t die from getting run over. The “truck” he thought had seen, was in fact a tractor. His true cause of death was from shock over a situation that didn’t even happen in the first place.
2) The ‘overpowered weapon’ that he chooses to take from the goddess is the goddess herself because he was irritated with arrogant behavior. and Aqua is CERTAINLY not pleased with it
And both of these subversions are executed with such great timing and exaggeration, it’s hilarious.
And so, this unlikely team is sent into the fantasy world with Kazuma hoping to get the video game adventure he has always dreamed of and Aqua desiring to defeat the demon king so she could return to her realm. Their party soon expands to include an explosion obsessed wizard named Megumin and masochistic knight named darkness. And many, many hijinks ensue. Like I mentioned before, Konosuba is a parody of anime like SAO as well as JRPGs in general. it mercilessly pokes fun of the genre’s tropes and contrivances with an upbeat nature that keeps it from becoming too mean spirited.
But what I really like about the gags in Konosuba is that they’re not just there for the sake of making fun of videogames. They help to flesh out the RPG inspired setting by the excessive attention of detail to its ridiculous lore and each gag or a character’s action has an impact on the plot’s direction. Even the raunchier jokes (and trust me when I say there’s a fair amount of rauch in this show) aren’t just there for fanservice and they help to contribute to the narrative. this doesn’t just make the writing in konosuba hilarious, but also genuinely clever. The main cast of konosuba is also what makes this show work. At first glance they seem to be completely characterized in an archetypical manner but this far from the case with each and every one of them.
Aqua appears to be a high and mighty tsundere and while she is very prideful, she is also a complete idiot and making fun of her never gets old. Megumin could’ve easily been the stoic yet powerful loli but in truth she’s completely childish and immature. This is best shown in the fact that the only magic she knows is explosion magic, which is so powerful she can use it once per day. But it doesn’t matter to her because it’s the coolest. Darkness may seem as a loyal and selfless knight who wants to defend her people, but in truth she’s a masochist who dreams of being tortured by ferocious monsters and gets very turned on whenever she’s insulted. And finally, there’s kazuma who could’ve easily been yet another bland, self-insert protagonist who happens to be very powerful. Except he isn’t. Yes, he shares a lot of common traits of the hikikomori trope like his obsession with videogames and waifus, and his occasional perversion, but he’s not glorified for any of it and he constantly complains about how the life he desired as an adventurer completely suck.
All of these characters end up comedically suffering because of their decisions and none of them are glorified. They’re not good natured people at the slightest but what that makes them likable is how despite their flaws, they still try achieve their goals despite failing. The characters don’t really change when it comes to their behavior but throught the episodes, they do get closer to each other and some sort of bond is formed between them.
and I’m just going to praise this show for NOT going the easy route and making all the girls fall in love with kazuma and become his harem.  It’s a SHAME this is such a rare occurance.
The Presentation Studio DEEN has never been when It comes to animating and thus, konosuba isn’t the mostpolished. The colors of the fantasy world are vibrant and managed to make the setting pleasant, but the locations that the characters lived in weren’t that memorable. The animation itself isn’t very consistent and for the most part tends to look rather wonky But the aspects of the animation that are strong manage to shine through its flaws.
Takaomi Kanasaki, the anime’s director brilliantly managed to direct the show so that every joke hits. The pacing and timing is always tight and the wonkiness of the character animation actually helps to bring out the humor of the scenes to some extent. The action scenes that occur in the show are also well paced and have some brilliant sakuga moments sprinkled in.
The music in the show is also well made, not necessarily because of how memorable or epic it is, but because how its utilized in terms of comedy. sometimes the songs are used as a queue of a specific gag such as megumin’s casting an explosion, and sometimes they abrupltly end to highten the effect of a certain punchline. In addition, the OP to the show is a lot of fun to listen to. The song that accompanies is “fantastic dreamer” is relatively standard, but it’s filled with a lot of inside jokes and small gags that help to convey the chemistry between the main characters.
By far the strongest point of the overall presentation is the voice acting. Each and every actor from the main cast fit their characters to a T and the lines are delivered with a lot of energy and charisma. The best performance in the cast belongs to aqua’s voice actress, Sora Amamiya because she really gave that character her identity.
Final Verdict The first season of Konosuba is probably one of the best comedies I have seen in a while and not just in anime. Despite its short length, It’s an excellent parody of shows in the “trapped in the video game” subgenre but it manages to construct a fleshed out yet ridiculous fantasy world with very entertaining comedic leads. I recommend it for people who are tired of the oversaturation of anime like SAO as well as to people who just want to enjoy a good comedy. I can’t necessarily say that those who can’t stomach raunchiness will enjoy, but for the most part the tasteless fanservice is well… in good taste. And with that. That’s all I have to say about konosuba. Check it out if you’re interested because like its title says: it’s a blessing on this wonderful world

Fixed the Guided Missile firing animation so that it plays properly while spectating the player that is firing the weapon.
Reduced the size of Mushrooms that were too large.
PERFORMANCE
Major optimizations + improvements made to console load times and CPU performance.
We’ve made some data layout optimizations in order to improve load times and performance. Load times reduced by 25-30 seconds as a result of these changes on Xbox One and around 10 seconds on PS4. On both platforms, we expect to see fewer issues with geometry or cosmetics failing to load in time, and FPS drops during skydiving. The Xbox One download will be larger than normal in this release as a result of these optimizations. We’re working to minimize the impact of this type of optimization in future releases. – Developer Comment
Reduced download and patch size for players who just have access to Battle Royale (PC only).
Fixed various issues causing the game to freeze up/hitch while loading assets, especially on console. These assets are now preloaded before the game starts.
Optimized servers to reduce network lag when firing weapons and taking damage.

Multiple graphical improvements were made to the skybox, vegetation and anti-aliasing.

Attempting to play using a jailbroken device will result in being kicked.
Fixed various interacting actions, including:
Icons not showing properly on lower-end devices
Supply Drops not being able to be opened.
Doors not consistently opening and closing.

Fortnite Update 3.5 Released With New Port-a-Fort; Patch Notes Released
https://cryptobully.com/fortnite-update-3-5-released-with-new-port-a-fort-patch-notes-released/
Fortnite Update 3.5 Released With New Port-a-Fort; Patch Notes Released
Fortnite has another update out, and Battle Royale has a new item available now on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and mobile. In addition, the previously announced replay system has been implemented, a new limited-time mode is coming soon, and a bunch of new cosmetics have been added to Save the World. Numerous issues cropped up after its release, but things seem to be running smoothly now, and players will get freebies as compensation.
Version 3.5, as the update is called, adds the recently teased Port-a-Fort feature, which is a throwable item that spawns a fort in seconds. You can carry up to five of these, though they only drop in stacks of one. Take a look at the Epic-tier item below. Battle Royale will also revive the 50v50 mode “soon” with a few small changes, although it’s since been delayed until next week. Additionally, the console versions should load faster and some weapon changes have been made.
Save the World, meanwhile, adds some new cosmetic options that include four new Heroes with a cyberpunk theme and a set of neon weapon skins. Take a look at those in the images below.
Aside from bug fixes and balance tweaks, the only other meaningful addition is Fortnite’s replay system. This allows you to save your matches and watch them back from any angle. This is designed for sharing options but could also allow you to learn from where you and other players go wrong. Take a look at the full patch notes at the bottom of this article, via Epic.
Our Fortnite: Battle Royale review went live just recently. Critic Michael Higham enjoyed the multiplayer title and awarded it an 8/10. “While there are several moving parts in the game’s ecosystem, Fortnite’s biggest accomplishment is in how it seamlessly merges a number of simple mechanics to create a distinguishable battle royale game,” he wrote. “What looks to be a straightforward building system steadily escalates to an elaborate display of tactical prowess. As the saying goes: It’s easy to learn, hard to master. Although a few shortcomings in the map design eventually surface and fatigue in looting can set in, Fortnite rarely fails at challenging you in unexpected ways, resulting in something more than just another typical last-person-standing shooter.”

Gameplay
Limited Time Mode: 50V50 v2
Two teams of 50 fight to the finish!
Due to this being a “large squad” mode, Profile Stats will not be tracked. Daily & Weekly challenges will still work, with the exception of the Squad-based challenges (‘Place Top 6 in Squads’, etc.).
Storm & Map
Each team has a bus, approaching the island from opposite directions. On the map, the friendly bus has a blue outline, enemy has red.

Players have 10 minutes to loot the map as the storm closes in on the circle, then 5 minutes to fight, and another 5 minutes as the storm shrinks to the end.
Supply drops come in batches of 3-6, fall every two minutes, and only land in the final storm circle.
Added dotted line to map, which indicates the “battle lines” between the two teams. Crossing the line will make running into enemies more likely.
Loot
Farming resources increased 75% over default.
Increased floor loot spawn likelihood by 15%.
Floor Loot spawns double ammo.
Ammo boxes spawn triple ammo.
Chests spawn double ammo & consumables.
Supply drops spawn double ammo, and an extra consumable, resource drop and trap.

Downed players lose health more quickly than normal (10 health per tick).
New ‘Builder Pro’ controller configuration
This configuration is similar to “Combat Pro”, but optimized for fast placement of building pieces.
Wall, floor, stairs, and roof have designated buttons on controllers.
The first button press will switch to the mapped building piece, then every press after will place that piece.
To switch between materials or traps, press the Left D-Pad button.
New Squad Comms wheel
This allows you to communicate quickly without voice.
The following callouts are currently available: Enemy Spotted, Need Meds, Need Shields, Need Materials, Need Weapon (context-sensitive), and Need Ammo (context-sensitive).
Defaults to ‘V’ key, Right D-Pad on controller, or in the Emote menu on Mobile.

Supply Drops not being able to be opened.
Doors not consistently opening and closing.
The Map not being able to be zoomed & panned.

The Husk attack now begins when a player deploys the See-Bot. See-Bot is safe before then.
Players have 5 minutes to start the scan and then defend See-Bot.
Husk attack difficulty has been reduced for first two attacks.
Shelter will now automatically start diagnostic scan when player reaches the shelter instead of having to interact with it.
Decreasing the difficulty of the mission and initial combat encounter allowed us to double down on the mission core: scrambling to rescue a sieged shelter and creating a time pressure. -Developer Comment
With the automatic diagnostic scan the length of time until first raid occurs has been increased to 8:30 minutes after diagnostics are complete to allow more time to prepare, used to be 6:30 minutes.
Progress for the quest ‘Air Quotes’ is now given when the first 25 enemies have been successfully eliminated after activating the Storm Chest. Rather than having to eliminate all waves of enemies before the timer is up.

ARISTOTLE ON MARS
THAT FEELS BETTER
When Aristotle talked about catharsis (the purging of fear and pity through drama) he MAY have been thinking more about killing your father and sleeping with your mother than invasive alien life forms.
But in times like these we here at The Thread will take catharsis wherever we find it. So last week we finally watched Clint Eastwood’s Scully, and when the ferry crew started pulling the 155 passengers off the plane wing our eyes got all moist right on cue.
By the end of the movie an evil NTSB panel is forced to admit that sometimes heroes actually are heroes.  And we were forced to admit that every once in a while things actually do turn out well.  Aristotelian or not, it did perk us up.
But Scully isn’t exactly representative.  Far more common in films are films where small human errors add up to disaster.  Like  the Oscars — or the latest Alien knock-off that opens this week.
iTUNES USER ALERT! Just want to make sure you know you don’t have to pay $14.99 at iTunes for a movie you’re only going to watch once. Every other service will let you rent most titles for $10 less than iTunes. Amazing, right?  Even if you love Apple, don’t let them scam you.
     LIFE (2017)
At the outer limits of human endeavor, the margin for error becomes increasingly slim.  So when an alien life form pops up in a movie — and it doesn’t have Star Wars in the title — we know there’s a good shot that before long something unanticipated is going to pop up.
Except that by now, the unanticipated is exactly what we anticipate, like:  Really?  You’re gonna stick your finger in there?
In Scully, the pilot’s experience and human ability to judge a complex situation more rapidly than any computer saves the day.  The lesson here is a flip of that — as the crew   members struggle to contain a ruthlessly aggressive Martian life form, their humanity keeps getting in the way.
The early reviews are decent, even though everybody agrees that it falls apart in the last act.  Reportedly whole multicultural crew are provided with  back stories  – not just Jake Gyllenhal and Ryan Reynolds.
Genre purists should be saving themselves for Alien: Covenant, Ridley Scott’s return to the Alien franchise.  It opens in May, with a fun and even more multicultural cast.  But in all likelihood, they’ll come out anyway, just to jeer at not-so-cheap knockoff.
  DEEPWATER HORIZON (2016)
Like Scully, we pretty much knew exactly what this movie was going to be before we watched it.  And we watched it anyway – though we did save it for a weekend when we were home alone, so we could pump up the 5.1 sound to an eyeball-jiggling volume.
You know from the start that Marky Mark is going to survive to get back to Kate Hudson.  And you figure he’s probably going to save the cute Hispanic woman (Gina Rodriguez — she could save him, but that would be a big genre stretch for this movie).  And it doesn’t take advanced calculus to figure out pretty quick that John Malkovich, sporting a honey-dripping drawl, is the villain.
It’s a real Dad flick – more technical jargon than cleavage.  And a nicely aging Kurt Russell in the solid-as-a-rock captain role.
Oh yeah, and (spoiler alert) there are explosions.  Biiig explosions.  Lots of explosions.  That damn oil rig blows up again and again and again; and again.  Here at The Thread, we don’t track every single superhero movie closely; but to our untrained eye there were more, bigger, better explosions than we’ve seen anywhere else recently.
There are human errors, falling in the subcategories of corporate greed and tempting fate.  But the movie accurately depicts the biggest error, which was made by the highly competent and super-experienced crew – not realizing what was happening and taking action quickly enough, as this geekoid article points out.
    LONE SURVIVOR (2013)
Deepwater Horizon is the second of three collaborations (Patriot Day is #3) between star Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg.  They’ve honed in on a sort of disaster sub-genre: hyper-competent teams (overwhelmingly male) and how they deal with extreme situations when all the layers of failsafe fail.
Lone Survivor is based on non-fiction book by former Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell.  A four-man Navy Seal reconnaissance team is inserted into the Hindu Kush, with the mission of scouting the location of a Taliban leader.  In the hilly terrain, they lose radio contact with their base.  They then stumble onto an elderly shepherd accompanied by two teens.
Luttrell (Wahlberg) convinces his comrades not to kill the three, but one of the teens gallops off, and before they can re-establish communications Taliban fighters come streaming in.
From the start of the film we’ve seen the cardinal rule that these guys live by – never yield; never give up.  In the ensuing firefights and chases, the four Seals take monstrous amounts of bullets and physical abuse but keep on going.  Eventually they make contact and two Huey helicopters swoop in – only to have one of them shot down in flames and the other retreat.
Only Luttrell survives – and only because he is saved by a Pashtun villager who risks himself and his whole family because of his Islamic moral code which obliges him to shelter the stranger.
    APOLLO 13 (1995)
Lately we’ve been searching for classics to watch with our tweens (nota bene — City Slickers is much more of a raunchfest than you may remember).  Classics, in this context, being anything pre-2010.  Which is why we’ve ended up re-watching a lot of Tom Hanks movies lately.
Apollo 13 is probably the highest profile they-all-came-back-alive situation in modern history.  You do very much know how it turns out, so this kind of thing is a real test of a filmmaker’s craft, which is why Clint Eastwood or, in this case, Ron Howard gets the job.
You’ll be waiting for the biggest meme from this movie: “Houston, we’ve got a problem.”  We’ve got to admit that Hanks is really good at humanizing these super buttoned-up, understated types.  In the photo above, he’s next to another all-purpose nice guy.  No, not Kevin Bacon — the recently departed Bill Paxton.
    THE MARTIAN (2015)
When it comes to writerly eloquence, the self-published Kindle novel The Martian was horribly written – kind of high school junior level.  And just like Fifty Shades of Gray, there are lots of pages you can just scroll right through.  But if you’ve got a certain sensibility (the kind that would lead you to read a novel about an astronaut stuck on Mars), don’t start it late at night, or you’ll still be up when the birds start chirping.
Author Andy Weir is one of those overnight success stories – although he was still a computer programmer when he published The Martian as a serial on his website, he’d been writing for years.  Some followers asked him to self-publish it on Kindle.  Four years later the feature film was released, starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott.
When an epic sand storm forces a Mars mission to abort and take off early, a crew member is hit by debris and blown away.  Telemetry shows he is dead, the craft is teetering in the wind;  so to save the rest of the crew, the commander (Jessica Chastain) blasts off.
Of course, Watley isn’t dead, just skewered like a bug by a spear-like antenna.  He manages to make it inside and remove the antenna.  With all communication cut off, he faces a long slow death from starvation.
Except, of course he doesn’t.  Through tenacious will and a lot of mental meat, he figures out how to restore the radio, and then how to grow enough potatoes to survive until his crewmates can improvise an emergency return mission to pick him up.  More shit happens, but he perseveres.
For a lot of the novel, Watley is sitting alone and thinking about potatoes, so it wasn’t an easy story to dramatize.  The adroit touch with which Scott accomplished reminds us that we should go out to a theater to watch his Alien reboot.
    Titanic (1997)
And the music swells.  Dare we use the words “Celine Dion” and “catharsis” in a single sentence?
Wanted our 5th pick to be Shackleton, the miniseries in which a stalwart Kevin Branagh (even more thin-lipped than usual) endures more wind-whipped ice and penguin meat than any man should have to; and miraculously brings them all back alive, minus a few random fingers and toes.  But we realized that it’s not available for streaming.  If you have Netflix DVD or a good library nearby, check it out.
So.  We recently re-watched Titanic at home, and the boys were transfixed, despite the love story pasted onto the epic deflation of human hubris.  Even viewed from the couch, it’s a grand, imagination-stirring film, with mind-boggling effects and a life-was-simple-then moral compass.
This movie cemented our love affair with Kate Winslet, which had begun with Heavenly Creatures.  And, we’ve gotta say, we like Leonardo better now than we did at the time.
Those last scenes must have been good training for The Revenant.  Although we must add this unfortunate Weir-esque fact – there was actually room for both of them on that door.  Don’t believe it?  Well, Mythbusters re-enacted it and proved that he didn’t have to die.

Fortnite's v3.5 Update Brings Back 50v50 Mode, Adds Replays System, Port-a-Fort Item, and More
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past several months, Fortnite and its standalone Battle Royale mode have taken over everything from consoles, to PC, and most recently to mobile, and now the game’s latest update is sure to bring a little something for everyone with new items and more.
Developer Epic Games announced that update v3.5 for Fortnite has been released for the game across all platforms, and the update itself is a hefty one with plenty of content updates alongside more general bug fixes and changes.
Specifically, the patch notes include details on the brand new Replays system that’s tailored perfectly towards those looking to share their gameplay clips on YouTube. The Replays feature will be available for the game’s Battle Royale mode and will include “a suite of cinematic settings” that allow players to create gameplay clips highlighting epic Battle Royale moments.
In addition to the Replays features, Epic Games also has added new content to the game, such as a new Port-a-Fort item that allows players to build forts on-the-go, and has brought back the 50×50 mode for a limited time with a few updates and changes. Players in the game’s Save the World mode will also be getting new items, such as cyberpunk themed neon weapons and armor.
Fortnite is available now on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, and iOS – for a closer look at the new update, you can check out the below video highlighting the new Port-a-Fort item, along with the full patch notes:

Picking up an item at the same time as firing a Guided Missile will no longer cause the picked up item to disappear.
Firing a Guided Missile prior to the victory screen displaying will no longer prevent the player from returning to the lobby.

Final storm circle visible on minimap at start.

ART + ANIMATION
Tweaked the object pop in animation so objects ease in rather than pop in.
Bug Fixes
Fixed inconsistent Battle Bus position changes that could occur every few seconds.
Fixed the Rock Paper Scissors emote so that it replicates properly in the lobby.
Fixed the Rainbow Smash and Candy Axe harvesting tools not always activating.

Fixed an issue where the message about jailbroken devices being unsupported wasn’t being shown
Attempting to play using a jailbroken device will result in being kicked.
Fixed various interacting actions, including:
Icons not showing properly on lower-end devices
Supply Drops not being able to be opened.
Doors not consistently opening and closing.
The Map not being able to be zoomed & panned.
Instances where accidental button presses would occur.
Fixed an issue causing Revolver and Grenade Launcher ammo to float outside the gun.
Save the World
GAMEPLAY
Enabled environmental damage for ranged weapons.
Percentage of damage done to the environment varies by weapon.
Environmental damage scaling for ranged weapons should remain consistent relative to the health of the environment, taking into account the rarity and alterations on the weapon.
NOTE: Environmental damage increases with tier and rarity only and is not multiplied through Offense.
Ranged weapons can not damage structures you or your team have built.
[Rework] Outlander Fragment
Fragment abilities, other than the Loot Llama, no longer require equipped Fragment ammo to activate.
Fragment abilities now have a cooldown and Energy cost, as other abilities do.
Fragment abilities are now improved when the Outlander expends Fragment ammo in their activation.
Fragment Ammo capacity has been dramatically increased.
[Rework] Melee Weapons + Environment
Melee weapons (aside from Pickaxes) can no longer damage structures that you or your team have built, and have had their environmental damage increased.
Environmental damage scaling for on-level melee weapons should now feel more consistent, relative to the health of the environment
NOTE: Environmental damage increases with tier and rarity only, and is not multiplied through Offense.
Axes do increased damage against wood. Hardware does increased damage against stone.Swords, Clubs, Scythes, and Spears do not favor any material type.
[Rework] Anomaly
Anomaly rewards increased, changed from BluGlo to mission rewards.
Anomaly shards will take full damage from the Pickaxe, reduced damage from other melee weapons, and can no longer be damaged by projectiles (Throwing Stars, Rockets, etc).
Crafting queue size increased from 10 to 20 (this means 1 in production and up to 19 pending).
Cozy Campfire no longer grants any Utility score for healing and instead grants more for placing the trap.
Falling Damage has been adjusted so that damage occurs at higher heights.
Players now first take damage after falling 1300+ units instead of falling 850 Units
(Example) You can now walk off a 3 story building, but you can’t jump off.
Initial fall damage increased from 5% max HP to 10% max HP.
Next Damage Threshold is now 20% max HP at 3 tiles.
Next Damage Threshold is now 50% max HP at 3.75 tiles.
Next Damage Threshold is now Knockdown at 4.5 tiles.
Farther than 4.5 tiles will also result in Knockdown.
Enemy fall damage values have been adjusted to be in line with these changes.
The vehicles that Survivors stand on top of will no longer take damage from ranged or melee weapons.
Only the Pickaxe can damage them.
Increased wood, stone, and metal stack size and carry limits.
The default building resource capacity has been increased from 999 to 2000.
Building Resource Capacity nodes have replaced the previously existing Weapon Skill nodes in the Skill Tree. These new nodes allow players to upgrade their resource carrying ability by 1000 apiece to a maximum of 5000 per type.
Weapon Skill has been effectively uncapped since v3.3, which allowed us the opportunity to remove and repurpose their nodes in the skill tree. So don’t worry – your ability to use weapons of all levels remains unchanged! – Developer Comment
Existing items will not automatically restack.
You can condense stacks by dropping and picking up items or transferring between backpack and storage.
Economy Tuning
Increased Hero and Schematic Quest XP for Stonewood, up to Mid Plankerton.
Players who have already completed these Quests will be awarded the difference.
Challenge Quests have been extended to 20 Stages.
The ‘Leave No One Behind’ Challenge Quest now awards Survivor XP, scaled based on stage.
Players who have already completed Stages 1-10 of this Quest line will be awarded the Survivor XP.
Bug Fixes
Fixed a long delay that occurred when joining a party when first loading-in on PS4.
Fixed an issue that could cause BluGlo pylons to spawn on top of one another.
The buff from BluGlo pylons is no longer lost after 10 minutes.
Fixed an issue that would cause players to pick up items much slower than normal.

Bug Fixes

Picking up an item at the same time as firing a Guided Missile will no longer cause the picked up item to disappear.
Firing a Guided Missile prior to the victory screen displaying will no longer prevent the player from returning to the lobby.
Players will now correctly spectate the player that eliminated them instead of spectating their own active missile.

Final storm circle visible on minimap at start.

Fixed the Rainbow Smash and Candy Axe harvesting tools not always activating.

Fixed an issue that could cause BluGlo pylons to spawn on top of one another.
The buff from BluGlo pylons is no longer lost after 10 minutes.
Fixed an issue that would cause players to pick up items much slower than normal.

Firing a Guided Missile prior to the victory screen displaying will no longer prevent the player from returning to the lobby.
Players will now correctly spectate the player that eliminated them instead of spectating their own active missile.

Final storm circle visible on minimap at start.

Fixed the Rock Paper Scissors emote so that it replicates properly in the lobby.
Fixed the Rainbow Smash and Candy Axe harvesting tools not always activating.

Fixed an issue that could cause BluGlo pylons to spawn on top of one another.
The buff from BluGlo pylons is no longer lost after 10 minutes.
Fixed an issue that would cause players to pick up items much slower than normal.

The final encounter in non group missions has been reduced to 6 minutes from 8
‘Repair the Shelter’ adjustments:
See-Bot will no longer be attacked on arrival.
See-Bot will now arrive with a 5 minute counter. After 5 minutes it will leave to recharge and then return later to a different location on the map.
