My mouse has such bad issues now (registers left click less and less) that I was today finally motivated to check if the warranty is still active. It expired three days ago. They've got the whole "planned obsolescence" thing down to an art.
#not to be old(tm) but those old microsoft intellimouse thingies lasted a DECADE before they broke#i know there are some 'vintage' ones on ebay but a mouse that's been used for years is kinda gross to buy for me#did the last user wash their hands after going to the toilet? etc. you catch my drift

Throwback tech: Taking a closer look at the original USB-to-PS/2 adapter
Serving tech enthusiasts for over 25 years. TechSpot means tech analysis and advice you can trust. Editor’s take: One of the first upgrades I bought for my very first computer around the turn of the century was a Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer. Its standout feature was IntelliEye, an optical tracking system that replaced the traditional mouse ball and afforded unprecedented precision with…

I'm not sure where to even begin with this.
Like... it's a mouse. It's a standard device. It doesn't need software. It can have software, sure, but it will work perfectly fine without it - that's why the same mouse will function across pretty much any computer or device that has basic USB mouse support, regardless of whether software for that particular mouse exists for that platform or not.
The thing that keeps mice from being "forever" devices isn't a lack of software updates, it's all just standard wear and tear: microswitches are only rated for so many clicks, plastic and rubberised coating wears down over time, glide pads gradually start having more friction, and the steady collection of dust and grime will inevitably start impeding function at some point.
I have my brother's old Microsoft IntelliMouse 1.1A around somewhere - that mouse is over 20 years old at this point, has gone through multiple replacement shells over the years while it was still in active use, and still all it needs to be restored to perfect working order is a new pair of microswitches and a new set of glide pads. That's it. All a mouse needs to technically last "forever" is just occasional service and maintenance and access to spare parts. It's that simple.
Making a "forever mouse" isn't a software problem. It was never a software problem. The way you build a forever mouse is by ease of maintenance - make microswitches swappable without soldering, provide spare parts for shells and panels (or better yet, provide 3d print files for those parts!), make screws go into metal insets instead of straight plastic, and stop hiding the screws under the damn glide pads already. All of this is already possible, and trivially so - several of these features are already plenty available on a number of high end keyboards, there's no reason they couldn't be - and shouldn't be - on mice as well.
...WUT??

When were they going to tell me the reason Amazon was out of stock of the Microsoft Pro IntelliMouse was because Microsoft axed all of their non-Surface hardware???
There goes my go-to recommendation for a really solid cheap gaming mouse. Right as I needed a new one, too. Fuck.

3 #MicroSoftIntelliMouseExplorer3 #MicroSoft #IntelliMouse #Explorer3 https://www.instagram.com/p/CeAoXGmpZO3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Microsoft Intellimouse Optical is an iconic entry in the enduring line of mice from Microsoft.
I purchased this for my “Millennium” retro computer, which runs Windows XP through a GeForce2 GTS and 17″ CRT monitor. I wanted the whole experience to take me back to the feel of using a machine from the era.
It’s a combination of how the hardware looks, feels, sounds and even smells that helps revisit those fond nostalgic memories.
I have an original Intellimouse for my 386 computer, which uses a ball. However this mouse came out during the transition period to the optical mouse becoming the de facto choice.

It’s fun to use a ball based mouse sometimes, but there’s no denying that optical provides far superior tracking and responsiveness.
Having a scroll wheel is also essential for playing Unreal Tournament to quickly switch between weapons during a frantic match. Although using a Logitech MX Master 3 mouse as my modern workhouse, returning a such a lightweight scroll wheel does feel a little odd!

It was a popular mouse during it’s era for very good reasons, which is exactly why I’m glad I purchased it to help flesh out my PC build for this fantastic period of PC gaming.
