Strengthening Travel Data Collection in Eswatini: Global Insights and Local Action from ITC Day 2 Training
Tumblr media
Introduction
On April 9, 2025, the International Trade Centre (ITC) hosted the second day of its specialized training in Eswatini, focusing on strengthening the collection and integration of travel service data. The training, part of a broader initiative to foster trade integration in Africa, emphasized the importance of accurate travel statistics in compiling a country’s Balance of Payments (BoP) and making informed policy decisions.
Understanding the Complexity of Travel Data
Travel services stand out from other services in international trade because they involve direct interactions between travelers and service providers. Capturing this data accurately is a challenge for many developing countries due to high costs, technical complexities, and fragmented data sources.
The ITC highlighted multiple data collection methods, including:
Personal and Household Surveys
Enterprise and Establishment Surveys
International Transactions Reporting Systems (ITRS)
Administrative Records (e.g., immigration, health, and education)
Operational Data from payment cards and mobile networks
Best Practices from Around the World
Participants explored successful case studies such as Algeria’s detailed ITRS classification system, which includes over 20 specific travel transaction categories. Italy’s visitor survey methodology was also presented, offering detailed expenditure breakdowns and capturing valuable insights into tourist behavior. Spain and Germany demonstrated how integrating mobile data and credit card transactions can enhance the granularity of travel statistics.
Local Contributions and Presentations
Three key national institutions shared valuable insights during the workshop:
Central Bank of Eswatini – Presented by Khetsiwe Dlamini-Maziya Highlighted legal frameworks, monthly travel service data from ITRS, and challenges such as misclassification. Emphasized cooperation with the Central Statistical Office (CSO) and the importance of seamless data sharing.
Eswatini Tourism Authority (ETA) – ETA Surveys & Stats Presentation Provided an overview of tourism-related surveys, including the Exit Survey, Day Visitor Survey, and Event Impact Surveys. These tools are central to measuring tourist behavior and destination performance.
Central Statistical Office (CSO) – Presented by Philile Mdluli Focused on hotel and accommodation statistics, data collection frequency, and challenges in working with tourism establishments. Noted issues like high staff turnover and lack of standardized data systems, proposing both short- and long-term digital solutions.
These presentations emphasized the critical role of local data collection and inter-agency cooperation in enhancing the quality and reliability of tourism statistics.
Challenges and Solutions
Key issues identified included the misclassification of travel expenses, timing mismatches between payment and service delivery, and low response rates in enterprise and household surveys.
Solutions discussed included:
Enhancing the granularity of ITRS codes
Leveraging mobile tracking and payment data
Improving survey designs and interviewer training
Strengthening confidentiality and legal frameworks
Encouraging inter-agency collaboration
Data Integration and Coordination
A strong focus was placed on integrating multiple data sources to avoid duplication and ensure completeness. The training encouraged structured cooperation between statistical offices, financial institutions, and telecom providers. Formal agreements and shared protocols were highlighted as essential tools.
Eswatini’s Path Forward
As Eswatini works to improve its travel data infrastructure, the ITC training provided practical tools and exposure to international best practices. The national presentations reinforced the country's existing strengths and pointed to opportunities for innovation in legal, technical, and operational areas.
Conclusion
Day 2 of the ITC training reinforced the critical role of accurate travel data in national statistics. Through better methodologies, inter-agency cooperation, and the integration of modern data technologies, Eswatini is well positioned to improve tourism intelligence and support sustainable growth in the sector.

The Dynamics of Global Outsourcing: Unveiling Pros, Cons, and Best Practices
Tumblr media
In the ever-evolving landscape of modern business, global outsourcing has become a critical business strategy for companies seeking efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and expanded capabilities. By delegating tasks or processes to external vendors across international borders, businesses can tap into specialized skills, reduce operational costs, and gain a competitive edge. However, this approach isn’t without its complexities and challenges.
Pros of Global Outsourcing:
1. Cost Efficiency: Outsourcing to regions with lower labor costs can significantly reduce expenses, allowing businesses to allocate resources elsewhere.
2. Access to Specialized Skills: Leveraging the expertise of offshore teams provides access to specialized skill sets that might not be available in-house.
3. Enhanced Focus on Core Activities: Delegating non-core functions allows companies to concentrate on core competencies and strategic initiatives.
4. Time Savings: Time zone differences can enable round-the-clock operations, accelerate project timelines, and deliver faster results.
Cons of Global Outsourcing:
1. Communication and Cultural Differences: Diverse time zones, language barriers, and cultural nuances can hinder effective communication and collaboration.
2. Quality Control Challenges: Maintaining consistent quality standards across geographically dispersed teams can be a significant challenge.
3. Data Security Risks: Outsourcing involves sharing sensitive data, raising concerns surrounding data security breaches, and complying with regulations.
4. Dependency on External Factors: External factors such as political instability or economic changes in the outsourcing country can impact business operations.
Best Practices for Effective Global Outsourcing:
1. Thorough Vendor Selection: Conducting meticulous research and due diligence before determining an outsourcing partner is crucial. Assess their track record, expertise, and cultural fit.
2. Clear Communication Channels: Establishing robust communication channels and protocols to help bridge cultural and language gaps is vital for seamless collaboration.
3. Comprehensive Contracts: Clearly defined contracts outlining project scope, deliverables, timelines, and quality standards help manage expectations and mitigate risks.
4. Risk Mitigation Strategies: Implementing contingency plans to address potential risks like data breaches or geopolitical uncertainties is essential.
5. Continuous Monitoring and Evaluation: Regular performance assessments and feedback loops ensure alignment with goals and facilitate necessary adjustments.
Global outsourcing presents an array of opportunities for businesses to optimize operations and drive growth. However, it demands a strategic approach that balances advantages with inherent risks. By leveraging the strengths of outsourcing while proactively addressing challenges through robust strategies and practices, businesses can utilize the full potential of global collaboration.
Ultimately, success in global outsourcing hinges on finding the right balance between cost-efficiency, quality, and effective management of diverse resources across borders. As businesses navigate this dynamic landscape, the ability to adapt, communicate effectively, and embrace innovation will be key to harnessing the true potential of global outsourcing.

ONE
It’s 3 AM in N109 Zone, the city’s usual hum a distant murmur as you stare at the glowing screens of Onychinus. Another late night, another stack of reports. A cold cup of forgotten coffee sat beside your keyboard. Your phone, usually a lifeline, was silent. You knew why. He was with her. Again.
The first time it truly hit you was during that emergency mission. A major spacetime anomaly, and of course, MC was at the heart of it. Sylus, his voice a low, focused rumble even over the comms, had been all about her safety, her well-being.
"MC's position is critical," he’d said, his eyes glued to the holographic map.
"I'll go."
And he went, leaving you to coordinate the sprawling chaos of Onychinus alone. You remembered the knot in your stomach then, a premonition of all the knots to come.
You found yourself humming, a quiet, almost morbid soundtrack to your unraveling.
He’d return, of course, always with a new anecdote about MC’s unique abilities, her latest near-miss. He’d look at you, a flicker of that familiar warmth in his eyes, but it was always fleeting, always overshadowed by the ghost of her presence.
"You're doing excellent work, as always," he'd say, almost as an afterthought, before disappearing into his lab to analyze data from her latest mission.
I don't like my mind right now. Stacking up problems that are so unnecessary. Wish that I could slow things down, I wanna let go but there’s comfort in the panic
You’d watch him, the way his brow furrowed in concern when MC’s name came up, the way his voice softened, just a fraction. He was so attentive to her, so protective.
And you?
You were the steadfast anchor, the one who held everything together while he soared.
You started noticing the changes in yourself. The vibrant energy you once possessed was draining away, replaced by a quiet weariness. Your eyes, once bright with ambition and affection, now held a perpetual sadness you couldn’t quite mask.
The dinners became a joke in your head. An internal, bitter laugh.
"Something came up," he'd text, always an hour or two after you’d meticulously prepared his favorite dishes, or dressed in something you hoped he’d notice.
"Emergency situation with MC. Next time."
There never was a 'next time' with him and you.
There was always a 'next time' for him and MC.
One evening, he caught you staring out the window of his lab, a faint, melancholic tune escaping your lips. You immediately turned, forcing a smile.
"Is everything alright?" he asked, his gaze surprisingly sharp, almost accusatory.
You shrugged, feigning indifference. "Just thinking. The city lights are pretty tonight."
He didn't press, but his eyes lingered. He noticed the way your shoulders slumped when you thought he wasn't looking, the way your laughter had become a little less genuine, a little more forced.
I'm holding on Why is everything so heavy? Holding on To so much more than I can carry
You were working so hard, not just for Onychinus, but for him. For the ghost of a relationship you desperately clung to.
"You seem… quieter these days," he remarked one afternoon, surprising you by actually stopping by your office. He leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, observing you with that intense, analytical gaze.
You busied yourself with a file, avoiding his eyes. "Just a lot on my plate, Sylus. Onychinus is always demanding."
"Is that all?" His voice was low, a hint of something unreadable in it.
You finally looked at him, your gaze unwavering despite the tremor in your heart. "What else would it be?"
You wanted to scream, to ask him, ‘Can't you see what you're doing to me?’ But the words caught in your throat, replaced by a dull ache.
It's not like I make the choice To let my mind stay so fucking messy
He sighed, pushing off the doorframe.
"You're always so dependable. I know I can always count on you to keep things running smoothly here."
It was a compliment, you knew, but it felt like a dismissal, a confirmation of your role as the silent, reliable support.
You watched him walk away, his mind already, you suspected, on the next mission, the next emergency involving MC. You were heavy, weighted down by unacknowledged feelings, by a love that felt unrequited.
You were holding on, but to what? A phantom limb of a relationship he refused to acknowledge, even as he leaned on you for everything.
He thought he was being close, prioritizing you for missions, helping you. But he wasn't.
He was prioritizing MC, and in doing so, he was slowly, meticulously, breaking you. And the heaviest part of all?
He had no idea. Or perhaps, he simply chose not to see.

Introducing Coconut!Reader
Tumblr media
You can call it sleeping around. I call it strategic networking.
Paired with Rafe and Ward Cameron
content warning: Cheating? if you consider that but mostly just father and son sharing the same woman
Requests for this au OPEN/closed
Divider by THE QUEEN @starfxkrinc
Tumblr media
Coconut is all bounce and gloss silk robes, ballet pink nails, designer heels with bows, rollers in her hair, and gloss on her pout.
Think “Barbie meets bombshell” all soft curves, plush lips, and giggles. People see her and assume she’s just another pretty face who majored in “how to smile pretty.”
But the bitch has a 4.0 GPA, graduated top of her class in pre-law as summa cum laude. and she’s currently securing her degree in urban development with a business minor. Brains so sharp they could cut glass.
Former Miss North Carolina Teen and a Miss USA Top 5 finalist. Her pageant walk is so precise it could hypnotize a room, and she’s got a terrifyingly sweet voice she uses like a weapon.
She knows how to network, flirt, disarm, and charm thank you, pageant training. That’s how she landed her internship at Cameron Development.
She flutters her lashes in interviews but hits harder than any other candidate in data analytics. Ward said, “You’re too pretty to know what zoning codes are.” She replied with the entire state regulation index from memory.
Ward is intrigued first by her body, then by her mind, then back to her body. When he offers her a “bonus” for working late, she acts shy, but takes it.
She starts sleeping with Ward because he throws money at her like she’s a damn trust fund. Cashmere sets, vintage pearls, a new Cartier bracelet “for being such a good little intern.”
She lets him call her “doll,” but only if she gets the black Amex when she wants it. She’s not ashamed he’s the one panting at her feet.
Rafe catches her sneaking out of his dad’s office in smeared lipstick and thigh highs. She tries to lie. He laughs.
“You’re not even subtle,” he growls, cornering her in the elevator. “You’re gonna fuck him and not me?”
She’s cocky about it until he makes her beg on her knees right in Ward’s office chair. After that, Rafe makes Ward share.
Now she’s their perfect little secret silk and lace between two generations of Cameron power.
Her biggest kink? Making men underestimate her and then owning their entire business plan in one sentence.
She wears pastels and keeps her voice sweet, but she’s vicious behind a keyboard.
Ward lets her sit in on meetings just for the view, but she ends up correcting his executives mid presentation.
Rafe starts letting her take calls for him because she negotiates harder than he does.
Ward calls her “Sugar,” “Princess,” and “Sweet girl.” He likes her docile, on his lap, brushing her curls while he sips bourbon.
Rafe calls her “My little intern,” “Pretty bitch,” and “Cameron Property.” He likes to wreck her lipstick before board meetings.
She lets them think they own her when really, she owns them both.
She’s a pillow princess with Ward, soft moans and legs open while he worships her like a dirty church prayer.
With Rafe? It’s rougher. Meaner. Messier. He likes to see the lipgloss smeared, the pageant girl ruined.
They both think she belongs to them but she’s got their names memorized in her planner like appointments:
9am: Blow Ward before morning meeting.
1pm: Let Rafe bend you over the desk.
6pm: Pretend like nothing happened and look pretty at the fundraiser.
Ward buys her a house. Rafe buys her a car.
Ward wants to take her to Europe for “company expansion.” Rafe threatens to move her to his penthouse just to keep her close.
She smiles through it all, files her nails, and books both flights. Who said you couldn’t have sugar from two sides of the spoon?
She’s using all of this for her thesis: “Gender, Power, and Capitalism: Sleeping With The American Elite.”
And yes she plans to publish it anonymously, after graduation, once she’s long gone… with the Camerons’ secrets and their money.
ALTERNATE ENDING I couldn’t decide which one so requests are open for Both!
Eventually, Ward proposes. Of course he does. She’s the perfect southern wife on paper, smart, stunning, obedient in public.
The engagement is a society spectacle thousand dollar cake tastings, Vogue coverage, diamonds bigger than her ego. She says yes with teary eyes and crossed legs. It’s what she was raised for to secure a name, a legacy, a life of luxury.
The ring never stops her. On the night of her engagement party, Rafe sneaks into the bathroom and takes her from behind while she moans into the marble.
The pearl necklace she wore to the dinner is still around her throat when he finishes. Ward knows. He always knows. He just doesn’t care not as long as she comes home to his bed at the end of the night, looking like money and ruin.
She’s a wife, a whore, a scholar, and a mastermind. She knows Ward will die loving her and Rafe will die chasing her. She keeps both. Rafe calls her a slut when he’s buried inside her. Ward calls her Mrs. Cameron. She lets both speak. She never loses.
In the end?
She doesn’t just have the crown.
She is the empire.

March 17th:
One week after Hamas’s October 7 attack, thousands rallied outside the Israeli Consulate in Los Angeles to protest the country’s retaliatory assault on Gaza. The protestors were peaceful, according to local media, “carrying signs that said ‘Free Palestine’ and ‘End the Occupation,’” and watched over by a “sizable police presence in the area.” The LAPD knew the protests were coming: Two days earlier, the department received advanced warning on Dataminr, a social media surveillance firm and “official partner” of X. Internal Los Angeles Police Department emails obtained via public records request show city police used Dataminr to track Gaza-related demonstrations and other constitutionally protected speech. The department receives real-time alerts from Dataminr not only about protests in progress, but also warnings of upcoming demonstrations as well. Police were tipped off about protests in the Los Angeles area and across the country. On at least one occasion, the emails show a Dataminr employee contacted the LAPD directly to inform officers of a protest being planned that apparently hadn’t been picked up by the company’s automated scanning. Based on the records obtained by The Intercept, which span October 2023 to April 2024, Dataminr alerted the LAPD of more than 50 different protests, including at least a dozen before they occurred.
March 19th:
Dataminr, a data analytics company that counts NATO and OpenAI among its customers, has raised $85 million in a combination of convertible financing and credit, the company announced on Wednesday. It’s chump change for Dataminr, which closed a $475 million round at a $4.1 billion valuation in 2021. But the company has seen its fair share of downs as well as ups. In November 2023, Dataminr laid off 20% of its staff as it raced to fend off economic headwinds and “doubled down” on AI. [ ... ] Bailey added that the new tranche, which was led by security-focused VC NightDragon and HSBC, is “pre-IPO convertible financing” and doesn’t set a valuation. NightDragon also created a special-purpose vehicle (SPV) for an additional $100 million in convertible financing from the VC’s affiliates and partners.
