Teams to be unbundled from Microsoft 365 | EU antitrust probe

To avoid an EU antitrust fine, Microsoft has announced it will be unbundling Microsoft Teams from the Microsoft Office package of products. This is to avoid competition concerns raised by the EU competition enforcer.
Teams was added to Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) for free in 2017, along with other popular apps like SharePoint. It was added to provide chat and video conferencing for the M365 suite and has seen a huge surge in users in recent years. This surge is largely due to the covid-19 pandemic and the shift in working behaviours, that saw staff around the world adapting to hybrid working. This shift caused an influx of people using chat and video software to collaborate with colleagues. Apps like Zoom quickly benefitted from this and saw record breaking usage during the pandemic. Microsoft quickly realised this trend and ramped up it’s efforts to make Teams the go-to app for staff collaborating from home. The Teams app (which replaced Skype as the Microsoft chat and video app), was already being pushed to the forefront of the Microsoft suite by Microsoft, but this sped up the process.
This spike in users has already caused some of Microsoft’s competitors to complain to the EU regulation body, including Slack, who opened a formal complaint about three years ago. These complaints caused the European Commission to launch an investigation into how Microsoft is using products to influence users online habits. The European Commission gave a statement announcing they felt that Microsoft might be “abusing and defending its market dominance in productivity software, by restricting competition”. Microsoft has now responded with the news that it will unbundle Teams from the other Microsoft Office products, as an attempt to appear more compliant. This change will take affect from 1st October and the removal of the Teams app from the M365 bundle will affect users in the EU and Switzerland.

Something I encounter more and more in fiction is a specific brand of assurance to the reader that I can only ascribe to The Twitter Cop That Lives In Our Heads. There's a pervasive desire to make it clear that, see, I'm intersectional, I'm conscious of the potential problematics of this encounter, I'm one of the good ones, and it's not that I don't understand the impulse and the fear of being called out because I do! It's scary out there! But it is often so grating to be reading a novel and have a conversation be derailed by a brief and pointed exchange about accessibility when not a single character in the book is disabled, or to have a heated makeout sesh interrupted by an explanation of the traffic light system, and the sad thing about this is that it would be absolutely possible to show these things in elegant and unobtrusive ways but for various reasons we are resorting to telling instead.
I know that out here in the world, we talk about enthusiastic and informed consent a lot, and those are very important conversations and this topic should be part of comprehensive and widely accessible sex education everywhere, and if you are entering into a relationship with a new partner, you should probably sit down and lay out explicitly what you are both comfortable with and how you prefer to communicate. HOWEVER. I, the reader of a high-heat contemporary romance novel, do not need to have this discussion with the characters who are about to fuck each other blind after their first date. I do not need to sit in on the equivalent to a new employee's onboarding process where they get told how to use the company intranet. It's boring! It's so dull! Instead, how about we package the information that is actually being transmitted (we are two enthusiastic partners about to fuck each other blind and we are also sensible people who respect each other's preferences and boundaries) in a way that doesn't disrupt the narrative momentum? Maybe interject an "is this okay?" or have one character go "tell me what you want" all sexily. Reference the characters taking note of their partner's reactions. There are a lot of ways to work this kind of Statement of Ethics into your writing, whether it's about sex scenes or trans rights or whatever, and personally I find this much more compelling than a neatly-injected soundbite which always comes off as either overly anxious or performative to me.
A secondary issue here, in my opinion, is that the world (specifically social media, but social media is part of the world) increasingly demands explicit statements from artists and uses an absence of "I wholeheartedly condemn x"-type quotes as an indication that someone actively endorses x, because why wouldn't they say so otherwise? This is bad. It's a bad development. It's a really gross combination of the literacy crisis and callout culture and it gets people hurt. So I really do not and cannot blame writers who feel the need to be very explicit about what they believe in, which is why I am not suggesting that you shouldn't include those beliefs in your work; what I am saying, though, is that your work will be much more authentic and touching if you find ways to show me.

Funfact before I began listening to tsv, I was convinced (for some reason) that it was a medieval fantasy? Needless to say I was confused when they in fact had cars and radio.
So anyway I wanted to ask how you imagine the world to develop further technology wise. Would the internet reach the same prevalence it has in our world or would it be too dangerous as a medium for worship? Or would it look completely differently to our version of the internet anyway?
I think that internet / email in particular is a really interesting one, because TSV is after all a dystopia based on propaganda and conversion and the cheapness of human life, and where isolated local communities are often staving off the encroachment of modernity.
So I don't think you'd ever see the internet becoming mass-usage to the same extent as our world, no. Partly because it's riskier and harder and therefore prohibitively expensive laying fibre-optic cable in the TSV universe when the workers are always getting jumped by local religions and sacrificed. Mostly because there'd be no space for organic expression and information-sharing to really grow, and e-comms would instead almost immediately take on the worst traits of the internet circa 2024 with endless brands and faiths astroturfing, advertorialising, promoting themselves via surrogate influencers, establishing alternate realities via algorithmically-delivered pipelines of increasingly extreme misinformation, and then 20 times a day you'll get a phishing email with a suspicious attachment which, if you open it, is a jpeg of a prayer-mark that turns you into a crab-saint. There'd be no chance to enjoy 'I have access to all the world' before it became 'oh no, the world has access to all of me'
So most likely it'd remain an occasional novelty in town hubs, a corporate intranet for businesses like Paige's, and maybe you'd get a kind of scattered ham-radio community of enthusiasts communicating over message boards about this and that.

There's too many thoughts in my head I want to process about 20/21 so I'm just gonna do it in kinda chronological order. So this is something of a series I guess...
JITD is a well written show with amazing actors so there are multiple valid interpretations of their actions - this is all v subjective. I'm probably thinking too much about it but I don't bring my analytical brain to the table for every show, usually she's taking a well earned break when I'm not at work. But this show is good and complicated so here we go.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Part 1
We're gonna talk about The Watch.
I fear I may develop some kind of PTSD where I get an overwhelming sense of sadness whenever I see any kind of timepiece. Someone catch me if I have to walk by some kind of clock tower.
It's actually been on my mind so much because the more I think about it the less it made sense.
When I saw it I thought the same as what Pei Su said, that Luo Weizhao didn't trust him and was testing to see if he has been in his office, and whether that's how he's been accessing the information. And that hurt him (and me - did he think of us at all???).
But the more I think about it, the more I feel like that can't be right, or at least that can't be everything.
Their motivations are hard to figure out because both Pei Su and Luo Weizhao are extremely smart and observent and they know that about each other. So you end up in a bit of a cycle of what did each of them know and what did they think the other knows, and then how did they interpret it, and how they think they interpreted it. It's frankly all a bit of a mess.
When Pei Su pulled out that slip of paper, he wanted and expected Luo Weizhao to notice. So at this point they both know that Pei Su has been in his office. They both know that he wants that information, and that Luo Weizhao is not in a position to give it to him. Luo Weizhao doesn't know what Pei Su's aim is, and Pei Su doesn't want to share. They're at stalemate.
But if Luo Weizhao really doesn't trust Pei Su not to peek on his own, why doesn't he just lock his office, he could also not work there, or at least disconnect with the SID intranet which, as his father warns him, is common sense.
When Luo Weizhao asks him the question, he's not doing it under any delusion that Pei Su won't realise that he been set up. And there's no way that he's not going to be upset about it. Luo Weizhao doesn't seem surprised at the answer, he doesn't have any big reactions at all.
The only logical explaination to me is that Luo Weizhao is sending a message and he's almost looking for a confrontation. He wants to talk about the fact that Pei Su is snooping and he wants to know how much he knows and how he got it. It's somewhat about trust but it's not the betrayal that it seems to be at first glance. Instead he is trying to force a conversation.
I asked then, why does he not just push for them to talk about it instead? Well I think that's in part 826 in my draft box somewhere. But in short I don't think he knows what to do with Pei Su. He's confronted him before, at the Late Night Red Wine Summit, and didn't get anywhere. Now Pei Su is leaving him little clues, and I think he's trying responding in turn. Maybe he thinks it'll be more effective.
Well he never got to explain and we'll never really know, because, spoiler alert, things escalated...
But what does Pei Su think? Why is he so angry? He's the one that pulled out the paper, why is he surprised? Let's move that to part 2 (when I get there)...

As someone who’s desperate for a new job that doesn’t suck all the joy from their life… how are you doing it? Any tips? 😭 I’d also love to just do a paid internship abroad to clear my head for a while. I just feel so helpless in getting there 🥲
okay so for context, i've worked in marketing/comms (or adjacent) roles in different industries for like 6-7 years now, plus as an intern in college, and freelance gigs. i was looking for project manager jobs, which is what i was doing most recently, and getting nowhere. recently, i started positioning myself as content strategist or general communications manager, because i have strong writing skills, do social media stuff on the side, and have experience in web development too, in addition to PM experience. comms manager roles pay less, but they're also less competitive. i uploaded my resume to dice (for tech companies), and have gotten a lot of interest from there.
my recommendation is to write out ALL of your skills and responsibilities at every role. it literally doesn't matter how minor the responsibility was, list it! make that resume like 2-3 pages long. now you have a list of every single thing you've ever done professionally. then compare that to jobs you want, or start googling "jobs that do X Y Z" that you'd be interested in. hell, ask chatGPT for job titles that make sense for your qualifications. then, using job descriptions and your qualifications, rewrite your resume for the job titles you think you would want or at least think you qualify for.
for example, as a PM at my last job, i was in charge of creating and updating our intranet that hosted training materials and resources for staff. it wasn't in my job description, i just volunteered to do it. no one hiring a PM cares about that so i didn't include it, but now as a comms manager, i'm leveraging that in my resume as "experience writing internal communications" and "managing intranet and training resources" because those are common comms manager responsibilities. it might be a stretch, but you do what you gotta do.
i hope this helps! tbh i know chatGPT is bad but if you are really burnt out, it might be a helpful tool for rewriting your resumes and tailoring them to specific jobs. you'd need to make sure it still sounded like you and didn't lie, but friends of mine have found it really useful.
also! i have stopped applying to any jobs that aren't posted within the last 24-48 hours. and i use google to find jobs that aren't on linkedin or indeed, since those jobs get inundated.
also also! job-specific or industry-specific job boards like dice, or higheredjobs, might be good places to upload your resume.
