have i asked you about storge before? if i have i dont remember, but either way this is an opportunity for you to ramble about it dskfjgh
Hi! This is really old I’ve been ridiculously busy this week and I’m sorry. This is such an amazing generous ask and I thank you many times over my friend.
Storge is (at its simplest) my fantasy book about a city in the middle of a civil war and a family trying to stay out of it. Only the family has enemies on both sides of the war and several secrets to keep and they (and their pacifist neighbor friends) end up getting dragged into it anyway to fix things before they get out of hand because the two sides are basically Evil and The Marginally Lesser of Two Evils. I fondly refer to this dilemma as “Several substories stacked in a trenchcoat masquerading as a cohesive plot” because there are so many different backstories and nuance. I kind of want it to be something that’s thrilling and plot twisty on the first read but by the time you go back to it you’re yelling “WHY DIDN’T I SEE THAT BEFORE.” :P
Our main cast includes the Laine family which consists of a not-dead, happily-married mom and dad, the sarcastic eldest daughter Enne, impulsive good-hearted goofball son Luca, and youngest daughter She is Beauty, She is Grace, She will punch you in the face. They’re friends with two pacifist bird-people Avian siblings: Chara, who holds a government position in trade, and her Acheran, who’s a charm maker that trades with the human city.
There are two main villains, who are respectively the leaders of the opposite sides of the war. Esil is an anarchist. He’s leading a rebellion against the oppressive Atilan overlords which sounds cool until he starts carelessly killing innocents in the process. Lady Elize takes over the aforementioned Atilan court after one of Esil’s attacks kills the existing noble court and starts being all tyrannical. It’s not a pretty picture, and then they turn their sights on the Laine family and everything goes downhill from there.
There’s a bunch of other stuff involved including no romance except for the already married parents (because they’re too busy fighting for their lives), several fantasy religions, a really elaborate magic system, a lot of hilarious sarcastic dialogue, and hope in the middle of a bad situation. I’m super close to finishing my first draft of the manuscript and I could not be more excited!
Thank you so much again for giving me the chance to talk about this! I hope you find it interesting, sorry this got so long.
