May Book Reviews: The Exile Prince by Isabelle Adler

Book two of a silly fantasy romance novella trilogy a la Megan Derr. Prince Stephen is living in exile with his boyfriend. Unfortunately, his brother has certainly not forgotten the existence of a rival heir to the throne.

These weren't particularly well executed books in the first place, but I think this one suffers especially as a stand-alone since it's mostly set-up for an obvious later confrontation with the brother. There isn't even really a romance plotline to lean on for tension, since the main characters are an established couple. Not recommended.

Regina character inspiration

Irene Adler- Irene Adler is a fictional character in the Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A former opera singer and actress, she was featured in the short story “A Scandal in Bohemia”, published in July 1891. Adler is one of the most notable female characters in the Sherlock Holmes series, despite appearing in only one story. While not technically a criminal and bearing no malice towards Holmes, she outsmarts him and evades his traps. Sherlock Holmes refers to her afterwards respectfully as “the Woman”.

Evelyn carnahan-Evelyn Carnahan (later O’Connell) is the deuteragonist of The Mummy movie trilogy. At a young age, Evelyn acquired an interest in Egypt and its history.

Russell Adler is fiction. It's an identity he hand-crafted and moulded to fit himself. Nobody knows of the girl who disappeared many years ago and she'll stay lost in her home town, they may even bury an empty casket in her name.

But Russell Adler is a man with a job, a wife who's desperate to divorce him and the faint beginnings of a baby bump that he's having to use his jacket to hide because he was too egotistical to bring any shirts that weren't skin tight. Despite it all, he has work to do and the show must go on.

Frank isn't sure how he realizes but he does and he tells Alex almost immediately. Is it his place to? Definitely not but Russell Adler is the only man stubborn enough to prioritise CIA bullshit over sitting at home with his feet up because he's fucking pregnant.

It doesn't shock him. He grew up next door neighbour to a George, left home and came back to find Isabelle in his place. He told her that it was a shock to find out that George had a sister, she told him that very few people knew. They were both lying, they both knew and they both lacked a general amount of fucks to give.

But someone has to keep an eye out for Adler and someone has to rip him a new one for acting like an idiot. Therefore both he and Alex are required.

It isn't intentional the first time he catches himself helping Adler. They're all arguing, they're tense and boxed in together. It was bound to get physical. It's unsurprising that Adler steps in to try and separate people when first start swinging, he just wants them to piece together what little information they have and work with it.

But when he catches sight of a stray elbow swinging in the direction of the blonde's abdomen, it's instinctive to push his way between Adler and the oncoming assault.

He's far more gentle than he typically would be as he nudges Adler behind him, offering the two brawlers a firm smack over the back of the head and a warning to walk it off or take it up with him.

When he meets a pair of bewildered blue eyes behind a pair of shades, he watches the realisation flood Adler's face. He's been clocked.

Alex thinks nothing of finding out that Adler is pregnant. He's the only man Alex knows that would be ballsy enough to lead their shitshow of a mission while carrying a baby. The man hides it well, he'd call it impressive if it were anyone else but he wouldn't expect any less from the Russell Adler.

It's only by chance that he notices it. The way Adler's jaw is so tightly clenched as he takes in slow, deliberate breaths through his nose and stares blankly in front of him through narrowed eyes.

Alex Mason recognises nausea when he sees it.

He's careful as he nudges Adler's arm, pulling a pack of smokes from his pocket and nodding to the door. Offering him an out.

The other man says nothing as they walk but the quickness of his casual stride gives him away. Adler's out of the door before Alex can grab a bottle of water on his way outside.

He graciously ignores the sound of vomit splattering onto the stones below their feet, leaning back against the wall of their safehouse and staring out at the sky. He doesn't bother smoking, it would feel impolite in front of a man who can't.

He only holds the water bottle out as he hears Adler spit on the ground, trying to rid his mouth of the taste of bile. He's offered a quiet, hesitant thanks in return.

It becomes a common habit between him and Alex to "smoke" with Adler outside. The prideful man he is, Adler had tried to shoo him away the first time he had stood by his side as the man emptied the contents of his stomach. He would've left and offered the other man peace if he hadn't caught the unsteadiness of his stance when he stood upright.

He was one of few men who could help hold Russell Adler in a standing position without receiving a broken limb as a result of the blonde's mortification.

He asks out of an urge to fill the silence as opposed to genuine curiosity one day.

"You know what it's gonna be?"

It might be too early but he isn't sure, he doesn't have a lot of experience with these things personally.

The silence he's met with doesn't surprise Woods, he supposes that Adler might just be ignoring him out of irritation at being perceived in a state that he'd consider himself to be weak in.

That's until he catches the almost inaudible declaration.

"Boy, I think."

He nods. He can see a mini Adler. A little toddler walking around with a pair of sunglasses and a mini cigarette in hand. Maybe some face paint scars to match his dad.

"Just don't give it a stupid name."

Alex learns to keep a packet of tissues in his pocket after Adler's third nosebleed. It starts sporadically, the man is mid-conversation when the blood starts streaming down his face. The second time it happens is when he's asleep. Alex hears Adler get off of the cot he was napping on and turns to find him without his glasses, the tips of his fingers glistening a bold crimson that matches the smears under his nose.

He keeps the tissues handy in his right pocket and has one in hand as soon as he sees the trickle of red from Adler's nostrils. Using a hand on the other man's shoulder to guide him into a sitting position, leaning forward to avoid the blood flooding the back of his throat.

In the corner of his eye, he sees Frank wave away the suspicious glances that are thrown their way as the man drags his unwilling recipients into pointless conversation. He keeps his thanks to himself, no one seems to be in an accepting mood in their current state.

When the mission ends, neither of them hear about or from Adler for almost a year. Neither of them are surprised.

But when they finally do see him again and catch sight of a picture in Adler's wallet that the man accidentally left out for them to see, they're grateful.

Alex calls the baby a mini Adler and he isn't wrong. The tufts of blonde hair, the blue eyes peering at the camera and the tiny clenched fist are all Russell. Or, if the scribble of a name under the picture is correct, then Frank supposes that it's all Phillip.

Okay sorry this would be a crack fict but- would anyone be interested in a fic about Bell from cold war being like, winter soldiered(longer life span, quicker healing abilities, but most importantly, no memory)

Instead of killing her, Adler helps her escape to a new country, taking on a new name, Isabelle, and starting a new life. Bell settles down, has a kid or 3, and rests from war. Unfortunately, she has a much longer life span than the normal person, and once she hits the age that looking as young as she does is suspicious she has to fake her death and take on a new identity.

fast forward 20ish years after her faking her death for a 2nd time, and Bell's son has become a sergeant in the military. John Soap MacTavish enters the interrogation room to see his mother sitting handcuffed to the table.

May Book Reviews: The Castaway Prince by Isabelle Adler

Picked this one up because another book by the author was recommended to me (sapphic arranged political marriage) but alas, the library didn't have it. Genderqueer prince Stephen flees his country in order to seek refuge with the only man he trusts, an ex-lover in a rival kingdom.

This isn't a novel-- in fact, it's practically a short story at less than sixty pages long. The plot suffers a bit from the short length. In my opinion, romance plotlines aren't very effective at novella length, as everything always feels very rushed. Put this one in the same pile as Megan Derr-- very readable, but not very good and with a shaky grasp on political worldbuilding.

Chapter twenty two, part one

BIG TIME JUMP!

With her children around her Deborah walked with Israel on her arms towards the front door. It was time for the to leave for her brothers wedding. Aidan was the pastor who would lead the ceremony so they couldn't be too late. Besides, who came late to their own brothers wedding. Her brother was twentytwo years old already. It was weird how fast her siblings grew up to adults. Her little brother wasn't so little anymore. He was taller then she was. And today he would marry Josephine Bardot. He wasn't the first one to marry a Bardot. A few months back her sister Isabel married Kenneth Bardot. It was very idilic. Two friends from two families marrying to friends from the same families. Gabriel and Kenneth were good friends and so were Isabel and Josephine.

Gabriel was already the eigth Levine sibling to marry. Deborah was almost seven years married to Aidan. A couple months before her were Bernice and Christina married and since then were four more siblings married. Bernice had three children now, Christina four. Elisabeth got married to Gunner Stoll and they had a daughter and she was pregnant with their second child, a son. Felix got married to Rebecca Hansley, a younger sister of the husbands of Bernice and Christina. Felix and Rebecca already had a son. Hadassa got married to Garrett Adler and they had a son. She was also pregnant with their second but not that far along to know the gender. She hoped for a girl. Isabel was the last one who got married and she wasn't expecting yet. It probably wouldn't be long until she also got pregnant with her fist child.

Soo, Vasli and Aleks ran to her “Isabella are you alright?” Asked Aleks as Isabella started to become a little irritated “Yes Yes im fine just a headache but I'll manage” Aleks and Vasli looked at each other in concern Manner as Isabella kept fighting her way shooting every and anyone in this fucking hallway. “Isabella You don't look okay” Vasli Said as Isabella suddenly gets irritated by the sales

“I told you Im Fine,” She said to Vasli as she looked at the remaining army of soldiers who are starting to fucking piss her off everyone, Aleks, Vasli, And Koa noticed that she was about to snap if we don't get her to cool the fuck off so they try to cool her down. Now I know that Adler brainwashes Bell to Search for answers not to fucking Snap and go crazy at enemies, But she feels like she is about to.

Isabella Got her knife held it tightly and uppercut one of the people's throats making it bleed, as another one of the shoulders came up to her she punched the shoulder face before she used her Gun and shot at 2 other soldiers, Soon she grabbed her knife from the guy's neck and then a solider and her charged at each other not knowing Isabell has next moves, Then she the Kicks him but the solider blocks, Roundhouse? No bro still blocks the quick thinking, The knife she uses the knife and slashes his eyes before stabbing him in the head then 2 other shoulders charged at her but she quickly runs and breaks there neck

There were 2 more soldiers up and she was about to take um all down, Soon she ran and fucking tackled one of them on the ground then got her other knife and Quickly stabbed His face and his face started to spill blood then she dug more not until of the other more solid plans to sneak attack on her but after she's done with the one on the floor

She quickly gets up turns around grabs the barrel of his sniper and uses it as a bat to hit the solider hard in the head spilling blood he was unconscious it knocked him out so hard, that as soon as the solider went on the floor she picked up the knife, sat on him, Slapped him so he could wake up but still no, That was a good time to uses the sharp friend and stabbed him in the forehead and cut all the way to his child as a lot of the shoulders blood was on her now.

Meanwhile Aleks calls Adler for help “Uhm We got a problem, Isabella has gone Crazy” She said

All of them had never seen Isabella this angry before, all of them had never seen this happen all of them had never seen Isabella covered up in so much blood before
