It is once again the 17th of june so we're celebrating our independence here in Iceland! And so I'm writing a sequel to this post :) more fun facts about iceland!🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸

As I mentioned in the last post, we have a phallus museum that collects and preserves, you guessed it, phalluses from many different animals. It started as an in joke between Sigurður Hjartarson's teaching staff where they kept gifting him animal penises until he started seriously collecting them and made a museum to display them.

We have had ☝one serial killer, his name was Björn Pétursson, called Axlar-Björn, and was active in the late 16th century

In 2010 our glacier Eyjafjallajökull erupted and the volcanic ash cloud was so bad that it disrupted air traffic across northwestern Europe and the north Atlantic. This had never happened before and it was a whole mess

It was once a trend to get tourists to try to pronounce the word Eyjafjallajökull. Go ahead, try it, then check the sound clip on wikipedia to see how close you got

Speaking of volcanos, one of our most active volcanos, Hekla, was believed to be the gates of hell during the middle ages

We have our own currency despite being only 300-400k people. All of our coins have fish on them. Except the 50kr coin, that one has a crab

Icelandic is a very old language that's gone through very few change over the past thousand years so we can fairly easily read all of our old scripts. Unlike Norwegians who's language has evolved much more but WE can still read THEIR scripts because icelandic is essentially old norse when u think about it

We have 13 santa clauses. Kind of. Look there's this troll lady named Grýla who eats naughty children, then her husband Leppalúði who's unimportant, then they have 13 offspring which each come to town one day at a time until christmas and they each have their own gimmick, its too long to explain in this post, just google "yule lads", plus they also have a cat that eats children that dont get new clothes for christmas

In 1963 the ocean spat out Surtsey due to an underwater volcanic eruption, its located off the southern coast of Iceland and is the worlds youngest island thus far. This is also how Iceland itself came to be around 20 million years ago, through a series of eruptions in the mid-atlantic ridge

Our 17 júní anthem literally has the line "yippee yay" in it

Big Ocean (빅오션) (formerly S-boyz and Big O!cean) is the first ever South Korean hard of hearing boy group under PARASTAR Entertainment. They want to create their own genre called S-Pop (sign language pop), where they ‘sing’ in Korean Sign Language (KSL), American Sign Language (ASL) and International Sign (IS). All members are hard of hearing and use medical devices like cochlear implants and hearing aids. They debuted on April 20, 2024, with a remake of ‘Hope’ by H.O.T.
