the best thing you can do to yourself musically is to find a specific genre of music that you can look into whenever youre craving new material...... whether its bedroom pop or funktronica or dreamgaze or adult standards its soooooo good to just look up playlists or genres or tags, whether youre using spotify or apple music or bandcamp or whatever else.... its just fun. finding new music is fun. i wish i could be a guy who finds new music for people for a living..... like someone telling me stuff like, "i like chappel roan but i wanna discover more artists like her, any recs?" and i could put together a ten track playlist for them. that would be SO fun

..:: #67. LA Priest - What Moves ::..
LA Priest was able to lay down one of the freshest tunes of 2020 with little more than a drum machine, a guitar, and his warbling voice. "What Moves" succeeds not in spite of its minimalist nature, but partially due to it. With few elements making up the song, it helps us focus on the unique guitar vibrations and the feelings behind Samuel Eastgate's singing. He takes the staccato backdrop that he's assembled and uses it to ask us a series of questions while oscillating his voice up and down. What moves us: To act the way we are? To fall into arms? To wish each other harm? All this investigation work makes it clear, LA Priest is quite concerned, and the trepidation he has about our current state is reflected in the instrumentation that wavers and wriggles around us in an oddly satisfying way.
Best Moment: When Samuel swoops into his falsetto to deliver that passionate "I can't take it, anymore / Take it or leave it, I just can't let it go" line at 1:09.

Release: July 21, 2020
Lyrics:
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da (Jason Derulo)
Pull up, skrrt-skrrt on your body
Performin' just like my 'Rari
You're too fine, need a ticket
I bet you taste expensive
Pouring up, up, up by the liter
If you keepin' up you's a keeper
Tequila and vodka
Girl, you might be a problem
Run away, run away, run away, run away
I know that I should
But my heart wanna stay, wanna stay, wanna stay, wanna stay now
You can see it in my eyes that I wanna take you down right now if I could
So I hope you know what I mean when I say
Let me take you dancing
Two-step to the bedroom
We don't need no dance floor
Let me see your best move
Anything could happen
Ever since I met you
No need to imagine
Baby, all I'm asking
Is let me take you dancing
Like da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Pull up, skrrt-skrrt on your body
It's just us two in this party
That Louis, that Prada looks so much better off ya
Turn me up, up, up, be my waitress
Know we not in love so let's make it
Tequila and vodka
Girl, you might be a problem
Run away, run away, run away, run away
I know that I should (know that I should)
But my heart wanna stay, wanna stay, wanna stay, wanna stay now
You can see it in my eyes that I wanna take you down right now if I could
So I hope you know what I mean when I say
Let me take you dancing
Two-step to the bedroom
We don't need no dance floor
Let me see your best move
Anything could happen
Ever since I met you
No need to imagine
Baby, all I'm asking
Is let me take you dancing
Like da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da (oh)
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da (if you know what I mean)
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da-da-da (girl)
Da-da-da-da-da-da (dancing)
Let me take you dancing

Future Nostalgia, Dua Lipa (2020)
Tumblr media
Future Nostalgia is an unexpectedly enjoyable record, effortlessly better than Dua Lipa’s debut and containing tracks that are both her best and some of the best that uber-popular music has seen over the past few years. It’s a step in the right direction from an icon who has always, in my eyes at least, been some way ahead of peers such as Rita Ora, Katy Perry, Anne-Marie and so on.
Future Nostalgia increases the gap between Lipa and those artists even further. Not only are the likes of singles ‘Don’t Start Now’, ‘Physical’ and ‘Break My Heart’ genuinely rather fantastic – stratospheric pop hits soaked in the influence of disco, funktronica, synthpop and glam – but deeper cuts like ‘Pretty Please’ and ‘Love Again’ are more consistent than their equivalents on Lipa’s self-titled debut or their peers on radio pop records.
And yet, having read so much that deifies Future Nostalgia as some primordial work for a new kind of chart-topping pop, it does need reeling in. In spite what some might preach, Future Nostalgia does not alter the direction of mainstream pop, nor is it some flawless meeting of Top40 pop and indisputably good tunes. It simply takes the influences of almost four decades of pop -as so many do- and moulds them into something more modern. It’s also worth noting that not everything on Future Nostalgia is as impressive as its highlights, the final two tracks in particular severely keeping the record from being enjoyable front-to-back.
Lipa is obviously wholly tuned for mass appeal and consumption but such music doesn’t, by any means, have to be as compelling as Lipa makes it. The likes of the dripping bassline of ‘Don’t Start Now’, the skyward synths of ‘Physical’ and BBC News-remixable ‘Hallucinate’ are all unnecessarily brilliant extras. It’s also an interesting development in Lipa’s career trajectory. If Future Nostalgia is more of the kind of pop music Lipa wants to make -nostalgic, with less out-the-door fashion and greater longevity- then her role at the peak of pop is promising.
Pick: ‘Don’t Start Now’
