   If one were to press the woman, she might confess that she rather enjoyed her idleness but in the same breath she would probably toss in an anecdote about a dog she had once heard of that had, for prolonged lack of interaction with anything at all other than the occasional dish of food and a water bowl, turned to chewing at its own fur and then its own flesh for want of stimulation. all this delivered in the same tone one might discuss the weather with, naturally, but with a certain look about the eyes that suggested certain easily drawn parallels might not be suggested utterly for the laugh.

   like so many selwyns before her, isla is most comfortable with delivering her hard truths sideways, in such a way as to make an acknowledging reaction not only unfitting but impossible. isla is not an overtly social beast, but solitude does her no favors. all of this and a healthy dose of recent events’ mental wear and tear combined to make usual afternoon’s leisurely lunch routine impossible. on any normal day there would be a walk involved, a trip to somewhere small and warm and tasteful. there’d be nameless restaurant staff who did not know her precisely, but knew the woman who liked interesting salads and the salt of capers and the near-orgasmic bliss of crème brûlée, cracked burnt sugar and velvet-sweet custard. where she could, in so many words, let herself go a bit.

   today was not a normal day, so there would be no walk. there would be no off-frequented odds-and-ends restaurant. instead she chose a remote venue, distant and unfamiliar where she could sink into anonymity and congenital cussedness. she moved from street to restaurant lobby, a small dark spot of raven hair atop the scarlet coat. then they seated her, slipped a menu into her small hands. a brief look at her face and out came amuse-bouche, tiny bites of architecture which looked and tasted like the last days of summer.

   they served her like a queen; she asked for nothing, wanted for less, and isla sat alone at her table and went through the motions for about half an hour. she had a spoonful of yuzu gelée halfway to her mouth when one of the waiters approached to tell her someone had asked to join her table. isla’s attention turned towards the person approaching on the server’s heels.

The Selwyns were friends. That’s what his mother would tell him. Not friends in the sense that Frank spent a lot of time with them or they were particularly close. Friends in the way that they rubbed elbows with the same sort of people—even if Frank himself was getting his hands dirty being an Auror. It was a little strange then to walk into a restaurant to ask about someone who seemed content to dine alone.

But dining alone was much weirder than making the request. Frank gave a curt nod as he approached the table; he didn’t intend on eating a full meal, even if she allowed him a seat. “Thought you might like some company.”

Frank was more absorbed in making sure she wasn’t lonely—after all, she should be friendly, they were on the same side of the war—that he didn’t realize that he hadn’t arrived with conversation topics. His mother was good at gossip, good at whispers, good at making friends with the right people, even if she were convinced that this whole charade was meaningless.

“So—how’s their wine?” That’s probably all he had time for that afternoon; he didn’t want to keep her here for too long after he had cut into her meal.

House Re-warming

Ryland pushed open the window, momentarily savoring the influx of cold air as a result. It was chilly in here, even with the fire going and the heating charms he’d been practicing again, but the air held a stale kind of cold. It wasn’t like outside. Still, as he heard the fire roar in the next room, Ryland scooted it closed again. He didn’t want to answer any odd questions about it.

He held his wand loosely, forcing himself to relax. The wards hadn’t gone off. He and Isla had arranged for her to arrive at 2:00, and it was 2:05 now. There was no reason to assume he wouldn’t find her in the next room. That didn’t change the sigh of relief Ryland let out when he saw her. He pocketed his wand away immediately. 

“You have no idea how much I’ve missed you,” he said as he crossed the room to hug her fiercely. Ryland had been back almost a week, but it wasn’t until being back in his own home that he realized how badly he needed to see those who mattered now. He couldn’t rely only on Edgar, or he’d drive the man mad. He needed someone else who he could trust completely. He needed Isla.

From Fans to Philanthropists

Inspired by actor and Smile Ambassador Michael Trevino, rising juniors Chloe Wise and Sriya Krishnan of New York reflect on their path to becoming Operation Smile volunteers.

Turns out that combining a math class with “The Vampire Diaries” adds up to getting involved with Operation Smile.

This was the case for rising juniors Sriya Krishnan and Chloe Wise. Bonding over their favorite show during their freshman math class was a major factor in starting their Operation Smile club at Rye Country Day School in New York.  

Like any teenager hooked on a TV show, Sriya and Chloe hopped on social media and followed their favorite actor from the “The Vampire Diaries,” Michael Trevino. They didn’t know about Operation Smile at the time — they were just fans keeping up with a star of the show.

Shortly before their sophomore year started, Chloe saw an Instagram post from Trevino about a charity FaceTime he was doing for Operation Smile.

A Smile Ambassador for the organization, Michael Trevino has been change-making champion for Operation Smile and rallied countless fans to support our cause. He’s even served as the emcee for the concerts at two International Student Leadership Conferences: 2016 in San Diego, and 2019 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

“Before I even knew about starting a club or anything about Operation Smile, I was like I want to meet Michael Trevino, I should totally do this FaceTime,” Chloe said.

As she recalls, some of what they talked about was random — like her love for the Jonas Brothers, writing, and photography — but in the end, Trevino talked about what Operation Smile is, how he was involved, and ways that students like herself could get involved.

Around this same time, Sriya — who’s interested in studying medicine — was looking into different organizations she could get involved with that “provided resources for those who need it the most.” She wanted to bring this organization into their school by starting a club.

That’s when she found Operation Smile and approached Chloe about being a co-president with her.

“This is like a type of organization that you don’t want to just stop working with because you know the impact that it makes,” Sriya said. “I just want to continue wherever I go, just always keep being a part of this organization.”

When Syria told Chloe about her idea to start an Operation Smile club, Chloe quickly remembered the FaceTime she did with Trevino.

“It was like one of those things where it was like we’re both a fan of him, but we’re both very passionate about wanting to help and give back and get more involved with Operation Smile that it was like this is perfect, we should do it,” Chloe said.

Soon after, their club was formed and started up in December. They had a very successful start: They raised $450 through pizza fundraisers, and they rallied a bunch of dedicated club members.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the first year of the club was cut short, but this hasn’t stopped the girls in planning for next year. In terms of their goals going forward, they are not only looking for an increase in attendance but are also looking to double or triple their fundraising amount from this first year.

With a strong start behind them, the girls say they’re definitely ready to make a big impact over the next couple years. They’re very thankful for Trevino introducing them to Operation Smile.

“I just want to say thank you (to Michael Trevino) just because teenagers like us, this is how we learn about different organizations and events going on through people on social media,” Sriya said. “When he posts about it, it’s just spreading the message to everyone and now it’s like everyone knows about Operation Smile. He makes a really great impact, so I just want to say thank you for that — and, yeah, I love your character on the show.”

“I honestly just want to say thank you because to be honest I joined the FaceTime knowing absolutely nothing about Operation Smile and basically just wanted to meet someone from a TV show I watched,” Chloe said. “But I think when I left the call, I felt differently because I learned about Operation Smile and it was just inspiring honestly — I don’t even have the words to put it in. He was just so nice and inspiring and made me want to get involved with Operation Smile, so honestly I just want to say thank you.”

Reschedule Tasks In Windows

I kept experiencing a dip in FPS and I couldn't figure out why. I've followed all of isimp4sims tutorials, I use Process Lasso and ISLC, both of which did make improvements (even more noticeably on my older pc) but, occassionally, it'd sound like my computer was doing overtime and my FPS would drop to 16-20 fps when it should be 60 fps.

I finally realized it was because my computer was running scheduled tasks while I was playing and those tasks were set at high priority. I've since rescheduled all of these tasks to fall outside of my playing hours (and every now and then I find one still scheduled while I'm playing and notice the immediate difference when I fix it) and it's made a huge difference.

So, this is for people on Windows 10 (though it should be same/about the same for other versions of Windows). The first step is to open Task Scheduler. Just click your windows button, start typing the name, and it'll come right up.

This is what you should see and, down at the bottom, you can see all your upcoming tasks.

Do NOT completely disable any of these! Your computer needs to run these things to keep your computer up to date and protected and all that fun stuff. We're just going to change when it does that.

I play late in the evening, and then my computer stays awake for 2 hours before it puts itself to sleep so I have set all my tasks to occur after 1 am. One of the tasks that sucks up a huge amount of CPU usage is related to Windows Defender, we're going to change that one first.

On the left hand side, click the drop down arrow and navigate down to Windows Defender.

Here you can see, I already have mine for after 1am.

Double click on the first task in the list in the upper middle.

Here you can see down near the bottom that this task is set to "Run with highest privileges." Since I'm having this run outside of my hours, I went ahead and left it for this particular set of tasks but insignificant things like Google Chrome updates and iTunes updates, I removed that regardless of what time they run. Now go to the "Triggers" tab.

This is where you'll find the schedule for this task. If it's your first time doing this, there's probably going to be a lot of triggers. Things like, "at startup," "when user logs on," "daily at [time]," and things like that. In this case, Windows Defender is searching for viruses and malware, depending on whether or not you're using other software for this you may want to stick with daily. You can just highlight the triggers and click "Delete" to get rid of them. Then when you only have the one trigger left, just go ahead and click "Edit."

Here's where you can pick the actual schedule. When you're done with that, click "Ok" and this screen will close, then go to the "Conditions" tab.

This section is mostly important for people on a laptop. You can tell it to only start the task if the computer is on AC power, meaning only when it's plugged in, so you don't have to worry about it draining your battery. When you're done here, click "Ok" and then you can move on to the next task.

I would definitely suggest checking Windows Defender, it was a huge offender of having a ton of triggers that ran during my gameplay and you could look at Process Lasso or Task Manager and see that it was sucking up tons of my CPU power. Beyond that, I would just go back to that first screen and scroll through your upcoming tasks, and do your reschedules from there. Just keep checking it throughout the week and eventually you'll get all the pesky ones scheduled outside of your game time.

Again, don't fully disable any of these tasks. Some of them, it won't even allow you to edit, especially ones that say "custom trigger" because your computer depends on this stuff. You really just want to reschedule scans, whether it's scans for viruses or scanning for updates, to still happen on a regularly occurring basis and often, just outside of your peak hours.
