#JackedKirby - Beware the (Captain) Barracuda!!! 💥💥💥 When I was doing some research into the Strange Tales series I found an interesting tidbit. Jack was banging out the covers for the series through 1963/64 but wasn’t really doing any pencils. The primary players in the book at that time were Human Torch & Dr Strange, with pencils for the Torch stories being done by various artists (mostly Ayers) and Ditko doing the Dr Strange stories. But Jolly Jack was still responsible for those dynamic covers... up until #Issue120 (published in May of 1964). 💥💥💥 What makes #Issue120 different is the fact that Jack DID do the pencils for the Torch story... and that is probably because of the guest star, Iceman! The relatively newish character of had only been recently introduced in X-Men #issue1 from Sept of 1963... only 4 issues of that series had been published since it was bi-monthly. So if you are going to have a guest star in the book, might as well go to the characters primary artist... right? 💥💥💥 Torch and Iceman go up against a modern day pirate by the name of Captain Barracuda... both of them trying to enjoy a nice day off on a day cruise! They use their dueling ice/heat powers to defeat the pirate, but I really loved the character design and idea of a modern day band of pirates boarding ships looking for booty!!! 💥💥💥 Like many of Jack’s disposable new characters that he seemingly created every month, Barracuda would pop up again numerous times over the years in other Marvel books. He battled Submariner and The FF... but this was where it all started! 💥💥💥 The following month Jack went back to just covers on the title and Ayers took back over pencils... maybe Ayers needed a break, so Jolly Jack jumped in with the pinch hit assist.
