#JackedKirby - A Man With A Pencil I saw an excerpt on Facebook from Kamandi #Issue32 (August of 1975) in which there was a behind the scenes featurette about Jack... so I immediately sought it out. Apparently Issue 32 is a Giant Suze special issue, so DC needed some extra content to go along with that months story. Along with reprinting Issue 1 of Kamandi, the issue featured a 4 page text article by Steve Sherman about Jack’s process. It featured some cool candid pics, behind the scenes details of Kirby’s process and a birds eye view into his lifestyle in Thousand Oaks, California. A very cool piece of content. #JackedKirby - Thor the Weary... One of the things I always loved about Jack’s superhero comics was that he was never above showing them weakened, vulnerable or hurt. As mighty and heroic as these characters are, Jack never had any problem having them take their lumps... after all, these bad guys are pretty bad ass too!!! It’s not uncommon for a superhero to face some sort of adversity and be down at some point in the middle of a battle... but not many people would START a boom with the hero battered and about to lose his powers. After battling the Rock Trolls in #Issue138 and losing his hammer, Thor and Sif are transported to NY where this issue begins. #Issue139 (published April of ‘67) deals with Thor being pretty much physically beaten down... he needs his magical hammer back, and if he doesn’t get it he may be trapped as crippled doctor Donald Blake FOREVER! An added bonus, we get a really cool Sif full body page alongside Thor to open the book. Kirby’s woman are always high points in the story for me since they are usually so powerful and carry themselves with such a warriors way. This is no exception!! #JackedKirby - A Neanderthal... Kirby Style!!! One of the coolest things about Kirby’s 70s series for both DC & Marvel has to be his best is constantly bending genres within the confines of the books. Like Devil Dinosaur is supposed to be a prehistoric title and Kirby sprinkles in Aliens, or how Black Panther is supposed to be a jungle action adventure book that is infused with gangsters in pinstripe suits looking for treasures.... it’s an interesting knack that Jack figures out to weave very interesting storylines into each title. Take for example this issue of the Demon. #Issue3 of the Demon (published November of 1972) is firmly set in the horror genre, with a hideous demon of hell as the main character and occult madness galore. But this issue features out of time cavemen, mind controlling madmen and dinosaurs... all@done in Kirby’s unique stylings! This Neanderthal caveman opens the issue on the opening splash page. You don’t necessarily KNOW that it’s a caveman out of time... but it is abundantly clear that he is far from normal. And Kirby’s unique facial construction really drives that home. #JackedKirby - Collaging With The King!!! One of the coolest parts of the 1960s Marvel series that Jack and Stan worked on has to be the introduction of the annual... an extra doubles sized issue put out every year to maximize sales and tell additional stories (while also reprinting older ones to increase the page count!). Some of the best stories/characters were introduced in these annuals... and one of the best is Fantastic Four #Annual6 !!! Published in November of 1968, the story of this annual deals with the complications Sue Richards has during childbirth. Reed, Johnny and Ben must travel to the Negative Zone in order to retrieve something to aid in the birth... but they accidentally take that item from Annihilus, the warlord like ruler of the Negative Zone!!! While the book is loaded with important first appearances and the eventual birth of Franklin Richards, one of the coolest things included in the book are the fantastic collages that Jack worked into the book (Pic 1). Including both practical pencil art and photographic imagery, these collages are amazing considering the limited printing technology that existed in 1968. But check out the awesome pencil art WITHOUT the photographic background (pic 2). It really makes you appreciate the craftsmanship of the finished double page spread that was in the final book.... and it’s even more apparent when you see the close ups of each page in pics 3/4 of this post! #JackedKirby - SDCC memories with the Image Gang! 💥💥💥 Sadly San Diego Comic Con should be happening RIGHT NOW but is currently not happening because of Covid. So they are hosting many virtual events this year instead and many famous comic industry vets are posting some of their favorite memories from SDCC’s past. So we wanted to share... 💥💥💥 Kirby super fan and comic industry legend @robliefeld posted this awesome pic from what I believe is SDCC 1992 (I think. Not sure) alongside fellow another Image founder @erikjonlarsen alongside The King! Jack is giving the boys the ole “Captain American punch pose” and it’s a great embodiment of two generations of comic creators coming together for an awesome pic. 💥💥💥 What makes it even sweeter is that Jack is often discussed as a huge creative influence for all the guys who created Image... but his struggles with creators rights/ownership of his creations also was hugely inspiring for the guys to actually go out and create their own company. #JackedKirby - Here’s a little ditty, about our guys Jack & Stan.... 💥💥💥 A few weeks back I was perusing the internets when I came across what looked like an independent comic that featured a character that looked pretty familiar. It was black and white... but it was pretty easy to identify who the characters were. I was staring at Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.... and they were the HEROES! 💥💥💥 A did a bit more research and found out that the comic I was reading was called Stan & Jack. It came out of England and was the work if writer/artist @petedoree !!! And man was it awesome... 💥💥💥 I immediately reached out to Pete on Twitter and ordered TWO copies of each issue (issues 1 and 2 are available currently, and i had to pick up a set for my boy @tommylombardozzi of course). He responded briskly and let me know he would be sending them out shortly but the postage from England to NYC had been a bit spotty. I wasn’t worried on how quick they would get here, and a short time later they arrived! 💥💥💥 The books pull Jack and Stan INTO the adventures they created so long ago as the actual protagonists... and the artwork is really great. The humor/conversational style of the books is spectacular. Lots of tongue and cheek moments that make the reading very enjoyable for a true fan of comics like myself. Really well done! 💥💥💥 These books are PACKED from cover to cover with nostalgic goodness, and well worth the 4 bucks a piece! Give Pete some business and order your copies today... he deserves it for putting out this love letter to the co-creators of the Marvel Universe! #JackedKirby - Strange Comics... France’s Version of the Marvel Universe! 💥💥💥 You know how much we love foreign reprint comics, especially ones featuring beloved Kirby art. In one of the comic groups I’m in on FB a guy named Oliver Guay published the covers for Strange (from France) Issues 1-10, which began publication in January of 1970. 💥💥💥 The series reprints Marvel comics from the 1960s with no real rhyme or reason.... it jumps around the Marvel Universe, featuring Silver Surfer in one issue, Spidey in the next and then Daredevil in another... it was bringing the golden age of American comics across the pond to France... no order was necessary. But one of those first ten covers that Oliver posted stuck out to me: #Issue10 of Strange! 💥💥💥 Published in April of 1970, issue 4 of Strange (pic 1) is a reprint of X-Men #Issue4 (originally published in March of 1964, pic 2 of this post) This was the first X-Men story to be featured in the pages of Strange, so it makes sense they chose Issue 4 to reprint because it not only features the team really hitting its stride but also introduces their main antagonists, The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants! 💥💥💥 Mastermind, Toad, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch all make their FIRST APPEARANCES on that 1964 cover, and all of those characters would be quite important to the X books and the Marvel Universe. 💥💥💥 As with most international reprints, we see an exact replica of the pencil art of the cover, but a difference in coloring. Magento remains relatively unchanged, but the same can’t be said for the other 4. Wanda is in a purple getup now, instead of the original green on the first cover. Quicksilver is instead sporting some green/yellow... instead of his blue/silver costume. Masterminds cloak is changed... but the only coloring change I LIKE is on Toad’s letterman jacket... instead of a drab tan we see a two toned blue/gold combo on the French reprint. I think this better represents a true letterman style jacket. The miniature X-Men all keep their true colors and stylings. #JackedKirby - Happy 79th Bday Mike Royer!!! 🎂🎂🎂 Happy 79th Bday to one of Jack Kirby’s best (and also rumored to be one of his personal favorite) inker Mr Mike Royer!!! 🎂🎂🎂 Mike did some amazing work with Jack on his DC runs (I personally love his inking on The Demon, pic 2 here) and he followed him back to Marvel where he did a bunch of Jack’s stuff upon the King’s return. 🎂🎂🎂 I also included a few other personal faves of mine, a two page spread from Weird Mystery Tales (pic 3) and the cover of 2001 #issue10 which I love so much! 🎂🎂🎂 Pic 1 is Jack with Royer at the 1975 San Diego Comic Con.... he is so young! Pics 5/6 are Tommy and Mike meeting Mike at the Big Apple con a few years back. It was an honor! 🎂🎂🎂 Mike is the consummate pro, not only by be an amazing inker but by also lettering and pencilling himself. He also had a very long career working for Disney designing retail packaging and stock art for use on everything you can imagine. I actually own a piece of his Winnie the Pooh original art (it’s at the framer... this is Mike!) and has some amazing stories of his 50 years in the biz! Happy bday Mike!!!! #JackedKirby - RIP Joltin Joe Sinnott!!!! 💥💥💥 Today we got the sad new that legendary comic book industry professional and long term Jack Kirby collaborator Joe Sinnott passes away at the age of 93. Today is a sad day indeed... 💥💥💥 I say “comic industry professional” instead of INKER because Sinnott was much more then an inker. That may be what he is most well know for, but he has written/pencilled many stories and strips through the years as well as done other industry duties. So to reduce him to just being an inker would be a disservice. 💥💥💥 That being said, most people in the comics industry and fans consider him to be one of the finest inkers to ever ink a page. Stan Lee is quoted as saying “Pencillers would hurl all sorts of dire threats at me if I didn’t make certain that Joe... and ONLY JOE... inked their pages!” Joe and Jack worked together magically many times, but it was on the FF they became synonymous with each other. He inked FF #Issue5 (1st appearance of Dr Doom) and left the book before returning from some outside work to the book on #Issue44 in Nov of 1965. He would remain on the book through #Issue102 (Kirby’s last FF in Sept of 1970) and then continued on the book UNTIL 1981!!! That’s 16 straight years!!! 💥💥💥 What’s most amazing is despite working together so long, Kirby and Sinnott never ACTUALLY MET until the 70s at a comic convention. This was illustrated by @tom_scioli in a cool panel (pic 5). Everything was done by mail! 💥💥💥 Joe was a proud vet, a consummate professional and the pinnacle of inking in the industry. He will be greatly missed. @walter.simonson.5 said in a post “anyone who met Joe became his friend”.
