SteveTony Weekly - Week 7 - Getting Together

I’m so sorry I’m late this weekend, you guys. We had a storm that knocked out power last night and then my phone died while I was working on this. But it’s back! And so am I! In honor of Valentine’s Day on Friday, we have this week’s theme: 

Getting Together 

There’s a million ways that Steve and Tony get together, which makes it one of my favorite tags on the Archive. Messy meet cutes, drifting together in canon, all the in betweens. I love it. So here’s some of my favorite getting together recs.

"No, not that, the other thing. The colour-blind thing," Tony said, stepping out of the changing room with his shirt still hanging around his neck in order to grab Steve's arms. "Please, please God tell me that I haven't spent the last two years of my life assuming you could see colour. Please."

Ik we stevetonies love our ‘Steve pulling Tony out of a bender in the workshop’ trope but me? I LOOOOVE the other way round. A bad mission and Steve loses someone - he tried to save them but it was too late, he couldn’t get there in time. And post-mission he just holes himself up in the gym and stays there. For days. Working himself to exhaustion just so he can shave half a second off his sprint (half a second and that person would be alive), punching bag after bag until his hands are bloody and raw.

Tony is the only one who can get through to him like this. It’s only his voice that can make Steve pause, come back to himself. Sometimes Tony has to actively stand in front of whatever it is Steve’s attacking, which absolutely infuriates him, but damn if it isn’t effective in a way only Tony no-thought-to-his-own-self-preservation Stark could be. And Tony is equally as infuriated that steve is insisting on doing this to himself, but even though his tone is angry, his touch against Steve’s knuckles is impossibly soft.

He’ll drag Steve back up to the land of the living. Put him in the shower and clean him off, freshen him up, make him feel human again. Steve will already be healing, of course, but Tony still tends and bandages his hands - attentive to the finest detail, devoting every part of his mind to just making Steve feel a little bit better.

They don’t talk much throughout this. God knows Tony’s tried it before, but Steve is never in the headspace for it, and Tony never says the right thing anyway. But he’s there.

He runs his fingers over the back of Steve’s palms. Up his forearms. He strokes the sharp curve of Steve’s neck, settling against the quick pulse. Steve’s face is blank, but Tony is always surprisingly patient with him. He waits.

“I’m fine,” Steve will say every time, while his face will say the opposite.

“You’re an idiot,” Tony will respond. “I’m locking you out of the gym.”

He won’t. Steve needs it, even if it’s unhealthy, even if it’s agonising for Tony to watch. This is just how they get through.

But Steve will see the way Tony is looking at him- distressed, angry, worried - and it’ll break through the fog. The thing that always takes priority over everything is Tony, and even though Steve’s brain is screaming at him to get right back to it, he just can’t put it above Tony’s well-being. He couldn’t ever do that.

“I Guess I can take a break now.”

not really an ask but just came across your blog. I've always personally seen Steve as demisexual (with stevetony as my otp) so I headcanon Steve as a virgin too and the she-hulk thing was soooo annoying. God forbid a young-ish guy isn't interested in sex 24/7 with just anyone just because he's conventionally attractive 🙄 it's also just as possible that Steve lied to Bruce/the team to "fit in" since he was already the odd guy out. Something I've done in the past (I'm ace/possibly demi) and it's just easier to lie than deal with people bugging you about it.

i prefer asexual steve over demi steve just bc thats what i am lol, but yeah that whole thing pisses me off too. especially because its made out to be a sad thing that he hasnt had sex with anyone, but he’s a conventionally attractive guy, so if he wanted sex he wouldn’t have struggled in getting it. so obviously he must’ve not wanted it. and that’s not sad. i always imagined that bruce is also ace and that steve and him bonded over that, and the whole “not a virgin” story was something he told the other avengers (which bruce heard but since he knew the truth it took him a few times of jen talking about it for him to remember that lie Steve often used, and use it himself. if that makes sense?). idk that whole thing just screams allonormativity/amatonormativity.

Ripple Effect (post-IW time travel fix it) by sabrecmc | After the events of Infinity War, Steve is sent back in time on a desperate mission to find the Tesseract. Instead, he meets up with 21-year old Tony, still reeling from his parents' deaths. Who, naturally, tries to climb Steve like a tree. Somehow, this fixes everything.

Literally a classic, this fic is the SteveTony Odyssey.

To me, this is always The 2012 Avengers-era SteveTony fic. In my eyes, it eclipses and predominates the whole of its fandom. It was I think, maybe the first MCU SteveTony fic I read back when I first got into this fandom over 10 years ago and it's stuck with me ever since, and if that isn't enough of a recommendation then I simply do not know what is!

Honestly and truly and genuinely don't have the words to articulate how heartwrenchingly gorgeous this fic is. It has pulled real life tears from me and imprinted itself into my memory. For all the ups and downs of 616 canon, we can thank every moment of it for having existed because citsuirtlanu was able to distill it down into this incredible, incredible story. <3

The day after Pepper's funeral - after Rhodey has come and gone, after Natasha has come and gone, after Tony has forcibly sent Happy away - Tony looks out of the front window, Morgan snoozing in the crook of one arm, and sees a dark, heavily-tinted car in the driveway.

The perfect, the perfect Endgame fix-it. There's a certain kind of magic in this story that I don't think I've found in any other stevetony fic to date. This fic is heartbreak and grief and guilt and friendship and romance all rolled into one indescribably lovely story.

my thoughts: i didn’t know that this was @meidui’s work when I started reading it, which was very late at night and very very silly of me. It’s all the things I love about her stories, angsty and sweet and lyrically gorgeous. Read it.

When Howard Stark demands Tony work at a dig site in S.America one summer to "build character" and "learn about life", Tony is furious.

But then he meets soldier/archeologist Steve and falls in love with blue eyes and a perfect smile. Just as they are ready to move forward together, Steve leaves abruptly with no explanation and breaks Tonys heart.

Ten years later, Tony stumbles across the file for the old dig site. He's determined to visit and shut it down, but discovers that instead of a village, the dig has unconvered a temple and actually needs MORE money to stay open. A security team is hired to protect the staff and the artifacts they find, and Tony comes face to face with Steve Rogers all over again– except Steve is bearded and BIGGER and way more dangerous than he used to be...And Tony likes it.

When the camp is attacked, Steve jumps into action, snatching Tony and running into the jungle to escape and work their way towards safety.

But long days and nights together bring back old feelings, and one day Steve takes a risk and asks Tony to give them another chance.

Will Tony say yes? Or is his heart buried too far for the soldier-turned- archaeologist-turned-mercenary to find it?

my thoughts: i’ve read this before but I’m a sucker for trapped together life or death situations, and NCTS does it beautifully.

my thoughts: tony showing affection through random gifts is never not gonna hit. Steve being sweetly besotted and just a tiny bit jealous? Perfection.

If you live in the same house, it’s really hard to keep your secrets. Especially if you are good friends. He doesn’t mean to watch as closely as he does, but it’s obvious to Steve that Tony and Iron Man are in a relationship. Right?

It’s the third safe house he’s breaking into in a week, so when Steve kicks down the door, he nearly falters with surprise to find the place actually occupied.

Stark is prone on the floor, pale and covering his chest.

“Finally they sent a pretty one to come after me,” he manages to say, before breaking into a hacking cough. “Just my luck,” he adds, his voice rough.

Steve keeps his gun up and crosses the room slowly, his eyes darting from Stark’s face to where his bloody hand is pressed against his flesh. Once he’s close enough, Steve finally does falter when he sees the gaping hole Stark is trying to cover up.

“What in the hell—”

Steve reaches out instinctively to see the damage—no matter how many years of training he has, no matter how much bad he knows Stark has done, it’s still second nature for him to help, rather than hurt.

The move proves to be his undoing. In a flash, Stark pulls out a knife from behind him and pushes it against Steve’s neck, just beneath his Adam's apple. Steve’s hands fly up to his sides, his gun clattering to the floor.

“Don’t,” he says, threatening. He pushes the knife closer, just hard enough that Steve feels the first pinprick of pain.

“Let me help you,” Steve says, frowning down at him.

“And then what? You haul me off to Stane?” Stark barks out a laugh. “It’d be a pity, but I’d kill you first.”

Steve takes a step back, and Stark sinks back on the floor, catching his breath.

Steve holds one hand up. “I’m going to get some bandages from my bag,” he says.

“Don’t.”

“I need you alive.”

“So leave.”

“I can’t do that.”

Stark tilts his head and assesses Steve. “Of all the goons Obidiah’s sent after me, you’re certainly the stupidest.”

Steve opens his mouth to retort, but he feels a pain in his leg, small enough to feel like a dart, and the world goes black.

Another night, another safehouse, except Steve’s fears are confirmed and Stane’s sent someone else. After his first failure, he knew better than to hope that Stane would leave him to it.

Steve watches the man enter the warehouse, keeps him in sight through the scope of his rifle. The man stops by a window, inspecting something.

Steve takes a deep breath, and pulls the trigger.

The man crumples to the floor, and Steve doesn’t waste a second locating Stark, who pops his head over some crates to inspect what happened.

Steve’s about to pack up, make a dash down the building to catch Stark before he makes his exit, but Stark’s gaze locks on his. He smirks at Steve, then winks.

Steve’s throat feels tight, and he chalks it up to the strange feeling of being caught. He slings the gun over his shoulder and runs down the stairs. His phone buzzes in his pocket, and by the time he gets to the ground floor, Stark’s car is zooming out of the compound. Steve swears and slams his fist into the doorframe in frustration.

He checks his phone. There’s one message from an unregistered number.

Steve swears again, flexing his hand before typing a response.

His fault for getting in the way. You’re mine.

Steve stares down at his phone, then adds:

How’d you get this number?

Steve begins walking back to his own car, stopping only when his phone beeps.

u HAVE read my file, right??

Steve decides not to respond--he doesn’t want Stark to think he can just banter with him. After all, Steve still has to fulfill the contract.

Steve wakes up with a jolt. He sits up slowly, listening for what could’ve woken him up, but he already has a feeling—someone’s in his apartment. He’s immediately alert and sets aside the irritation of being woken up from a pleasant dream. He’s been having more of those, recently, and while they were mostly pleasurable, Steve still felt a little confused by the dreams--and the man who featured most prominently in them.

Steve slips his gun out from his bedside table, throws open his curtains to give him more light. He can hear the light steps of whoever has broken in, and he’s pretty sure this is his moment of reckoning—a former mark’s family member, someone from Stane’s gang finally tired of waiting and tying up a loose end, hell, it could be Tony Stark himself except Steve’s pretty sure he couldn’t be stealthy if his life depended on it. If it were Stark, he’d probably have just hacked into Steve’s microwave and made it explode.

The doorknob to Steve’s bedroom turns slowly, and Steve takes aim from behind his bed. It’s as fortified a position as any, right now, and he has the advantage.

His breaths are even as the door opens. For a split second, his eyes meet that of his attacker; he was right, it was someone from Stane’s crew, and Steve barely raises his gun and then the window behind him explodes with force. The man’s head tips back, a bullet lodging itself right in between his eyebrows.

Steve dives under his windowpane, looking over the window to see where the shot came from.

On his bed, his phone buzzes. Steve crawls over and takes the call.

“Hello?”

“Guess we’re even.”

“Stark?” Steve shouts into the receiver.

The line goes quiet and Steve looks over the window.

Just across the street, he sees a vague outline of a man holding up a rifle. With his free hand, he waves and throws up a peace sign.

“See you around, darling.”

Steve’s happy for the relative darkness and the distance between them; that way, Stark doesn’t get to see the blush on his cheeks at the use of the pet name.

“Wait—!”

The line goes dead, and Steve slumps against the wall, the adrenaline seeping out of him. He sighs and types out a message.

Thanks. But I’m not going to go easy on you next time I find you

Steve stands up, shakes broken glass off his clothes, and gets to cleaning up.

His phone buzzes with Stark’s response.

It’s been months of their cat and mouse game, so when Steve walks into another anonymous, rundown safe house, he’s not surprised to find Stark sitting on a chair by the dining table, a glass of wine half-full in front of him.

“Took you long enough.”

Steve sighs, sets his gun down by the small table just by the door where normal people would leave their keys. He walks towards Stark and sits down on the seat adjacent to him. If he wanted to, he could move his knee a little so it would brush against Stark’s, but he won’t.

Not yet.

“I didn’t know you were waiting.”

Stark smirks and pours Steve a drink.

“So, what now?”

Steve takes a sip.

Under the table, Stark’s knee rests against his.

Steve shrugs in response. The sudden truce between them feels fearless, both of them exuding the strange relief of finally speaking without the threat of violence.

Stane is dead; the contract is worthless. In the time between hearing the news and the drive to the last known location of Stark, Steve had made peace with the fact that Stark could still take his revenge after all the months of chasing and mis-aimed shots, shooting as if only to strike fear. For the first time in his life, he’s glad to be proven wrong.

Steve curls his lips up at the touch and opens his palm on the table.

Stark looks down at it, his own smirk softening before he lays his hand on top of Steve’s.

“You always knew where to find me,” he says. His gaze stays on their hands, their fingers only loosely interlocked.

Steve’s chest tightens. Stark—Tony, is holding his hand. He wants more, but doesn’t know where to begin.

“You were terrible at hiding.” Steve tightens his grip on Tony’s hand, and Tony looks up.

“Maybe I just wanted to be found.”

Steve sucks in a breath, surprised. “Is that so?”

Tony leans closer, and Steve mirrors the movement until they’re only inches apart. He moves his other hand and cups Tony’s cheek.

“Only because it was you that was looking,” Tony admits, looking down at Steve’s lips then back up at him.

Steve huffs out a laugh, then tips his forehead to rest against Tony’s.

“Then I’m glad I found you,” he says.

Tony reaches up, rests his hand on the base of Steve’s skull, and pulls him into a kiss.

Honestly, both versions of that idea are winners to me even if I'm not the biggest buckyclint enjoyer. LOVE Steve and Tony being unhinged about each other because that tends to go poorly for all involved. And many that aren't involved.

I feel you on the Extremis thing as someone who, eventually, wants to do something Execute Program-inspired in the MCU.

Don't worry about ranting! I really like it when ppl are excited about their headcanons/projects :)

If one of them isn’t covered in blood screaming at the other about being safe is it rlly a stevetony fic?

Also re: extremis, I think ultimately what we must remind ourselves is that everything is made up anyways so we are allowed to make up stuff about the made up stuff. So we could make the extremis plotline a whole new beast and no one could say shit because it’s our stuff and we can do whatever we please 🙂‍↕️
