Late Night Buck & Tommy Rambles Bonus Content: My First Theory of the Year!
If you missed it, I posted my first ramble of the season here where I went over Tim's most recent interviews and some predictions based on those vibes.
But I have also developed a theory. One that is probably wrong but makes sense in my brain based on this behind-the-scenes clip from a few weeks back along with everything I talked about in the main post.
And I need to share this and get other people's opinions because it's been consuming my thoughts all day.
Basically in that clip you see Chimney and Buck run down the stairs and Eddie take the fireman's pole while lights are going off indicating an emergency. However, instead of running to the truck you see Buck run in the opposite direction (past Chimney and Eddie) who stand there looking confused for a moment before running to the trucks. The emergency vehicles than all proceed to leave without Buck.
The only way I could see Buck taking off like that during an active emergency is if someone important to him was in danger. Removing everyone actively working at the 118 during this scene, that basically leaves Christopher, Bobby, Maddie, Jee-Yun or Tommy.
I'm immediately ruling out Christopher both because he's not in town and no way would Eddie stay behind. He'd be out the door before Buck. I'm also ruling out Maddie and Jee-Yun for the same reasons because that same can be said for Chimney in this scene. He wouldn't be sticking around either. I also feel like if Bobby was in danger you'd see a bigger reaction form ALL of the 118. Which leaves the most logical choice being Tommy.
There's a lot of ways it could play out where Tommy gets hurt, is in danger or Buck simply thinks he is (we know the 217 responds to an emergency with the 118, it seems like there will be an airplane emergency so a helicopter crash isn't out of the realm of possibilities either, etc.) That part isn't important but the outcome is.
So here is how I think the Buck and Tommy storyline may potentially play out in the first three episodes of the seasons based on the previous stated interviews and this scene (with my assumption that Tommy is a likely person he's rushing off for).
I think the season will start with Buck and Tommy being together but less defined. They're happy together and a couple but things haven't got serious yet. They're just happy and into each other.
Cue, at some point in the opening arc, Tommy getting hurt or Buck thinking that happened. He's already having a rough time with Gerrard but now Tommy's hurt or in danger. I 100% could see Buck taking off for Tommy because narratively that would just add fuel to the fire with the conflict between him and Gerrard (and would give Gerrard a valid reason to penalize Buck because taking off during an active emergency is probably frowned upon).
But Buck picks going after Tommy because of course he does. He wouldn't be Buck if he wasn't reckless and put others in front of himself.
Tommy obviously ends up being okay but I could see this being the catalyst for Buck realizing oh shit I have big feelings for this man. Like omg I'm falling in love with him feelings. Which, narratively, works to progress their relationship into a more serious one that the audience will now be invested in because we saw this big, grand moment.
It would also have the writers showing, not telling us that the two had progressed from the more casual dating / early rom-com relationship they had in season 7 into something more long-term and serious.
So, what do you think? Am I onto something here or did I just come up with a good fic idea?

Soooo my season 5 wishlist kind of goes something like this:
Buck cooking for Christopher and Eddie (bonus points if both Buck and Christopher are teasing Eddie about his inability to cook)
Athena kicking the shit out of the serial rapist (I really, really, really hope that whole sequence in the promo is a dream she's having)
More Karen Wilson
Buck and the 118 being there for Maddie
Uncle Buck moments with Jee-Yun
Protective!Eddie making a reappearance alternating with a sudden appearance of Protective!Buck
Taylor's story evolving into her own (and preferably separate from Buck's) and further away from just being a love interest for Buck - I love her character and would love to see more of her (as Buck's BFF, I said what I said)
Jealous!Eddie and all of the gold that will bring with it
Albert, Ravi, and May being the ultimate trio of the "new" generation
More Bobby and Athena sweetness (I'm currently rewatching season 2 and I am just even more in love with them)
Hen or Josh cutting through Buck and Eddie's bullshit while Christopher aka the universe comes at them from the side, with Carla coming at them from the other side
Carla being told she's part of the family by Eddie, Christopher, and Buck (which would also mirror the scene she had with Abby in 1x10)
Buck and Eddie getting together (obviously) as one of the big payoffs of this season
Eddie throwing the Hildy coffeemaker out in the trash after the hacking emergency
More Buck and Maddie moments (I know they were working up to the PPD reveal for her in 4x14 but it felt odd that she didn't speak to Buck once after Eddie had been shot and while the 118 was in danger)
Eddie and Maddie friendship (lowkey manifesting this 🕯️🕯️🕯️) - I keep thinking back to Eddie being the one to ask back in 4x10 how Maddie was doing & you cannot deny the epicness of these two joining forces, you just can't
Eddie and Ana ending up where they're obviously going to end up - I'm not picky, it can happen any way they choose, but as long as it happens
Pining!Eddie and all that it entails
more Josh and Maddie friendship - does he keep in touch with her even though she quit? Especially after he did all he could to keep her from leaving that first time?
either Eddie with Jee-Yun or him seeing Buck with Jee-Yun
more Hen and Athena moments - YES PLEASE
more Michael, David, and Bobby hijinks
more David (along with Michael)
more Denny, Harry, and Christopher solidarity (bonus points for any parent trapping schemes they come up with for Buck and Eddie)
Evangeline and Nia coming around to Hen and Karen's to visit
the 118 finding out about the legal guardian reveal and Hen giving Buck a look, saying "Really?", Buck giving her that confused expression "What?", and Hen going "I feel so sorry for Eddie, who knew that boy would be into one-brain-cell idiots?", Buck going "Huh? What does that even mean? What idiot? Omg Hen, are you calling Ana an idiot? Don't say that, it will get Eds upset", Hen going "Thank you for continuing to prove my point" with Eddie muttering "Seriously" and drinking his coffee, embarrassed to meet the eye of any of the 118 because he really is in love with an idiot
Concerned!Buck making sure Eddie is doing okay, that he's not straining himself too much, that he's taking care of himself
a moment where Bobby instructs Buck to do something on a call that might be dangerous and Buck smiling wide and going "You know I would, Cap, but I can't. I'm not expendable" and Eddie muttering next to him "Oh my God" Bobby and the 118 looking baffled, Bobby going "Of course you're not expendable, Buck, but we need you to rappell down there to make sure there's no one in the car" Buck still smiling "And normally, I would, because I always thought I was expendable but I was wrong. I'm no longer Expendable Evan. That's what Eddie told me so, I'm sorry, Cap, I can't." Eddie turns his face away from Hen's wide eyes and Chim's dropped jaw, muttering to himself "You chose this. Remember that. You. Chose. This."
& then lots of moments where Buck just casually drops in any conversation that he's not expendable and Eddie's perfect eyeroll reappears & mutters of "oh my God" are heard - "Hey Buck, can you grab me a cup of coffee?" "I would, Chim, but I'm no longer expendable." "You're right there in the kitchen!" "Just because I'm in the kitchen doesn't mean I have to sacrifice myself. I mean more than that. You can get up and grab it yourself, buddy." -> "Buck, can you grab the Jaws and bring it here?" "Cap, Chim is right next to the truck, ask him." "Buck, I--" "I told you. I'm no longer expendable, Cap." -> "Buck, I know you and Taylor broke it off not that long ago but I have the perfect friend in mind for you." "Mads, thanks for the attempted setup but I'm no longer expendable" (with Eddie piping up "That's right, Evan is no longer expendable, so no more blind date setups" with a pointed glare in Maddie's direction) "Oh-kay..." -> "Buck, bring me that kit." "Hen, I would, but I'm no longer expe--" "If you even think about saying that word to me, I will grab the nearest dictionary I can find and hit you with it. Learn what the damn word means. Expendable doesn't mean free from assisting where you're needed. Now grab that damn kit and bring it to me before this man bleeds out." "Uh, you got it, Hen." "That's more like it." -> "Buck, would you mind picking up the pizza on the way back to the house?" "No problem at all, Eds. Will do." Chim: "Hey, why doesn't he get the expendable excuse?" Buck: "Because he's Eddie" and he gives Chim the look that very clearly says "Duh" and from behind him, Eddie smirks and winks at Chim before they both turn to walk away
ALL OF THIS

Re: your meta this morning about that moment in Jinx (I'll forgive you posting something that isn't the mother figures meta just this once 😜) you unburdened some thoughts in me. Fair warning my tin hat is ON.
Jinx is such a........weird episode? Like, it's all humor haha and the firefam being dumb, but it's also the first major episode of Eddie's mini arc this season (which I hope will extend into a much larger one next season). Im always trying to separate what their script says and what their script means, and this one is a trip.
I'm talking about Buck-Eddie-Ana. When I rewatched the episode, the dialogue struck me like, "two people (Buck and Eddie) who are tentatively navigating the landscape of their shifting relationship, succumb to missed signals due to an outside force (Ana)." He meets Ana and i guess he's smitten??? Although it could just be Eddie's typical level of charming niceties. He tells Buck about Ana, looking uncertain and like he's gauging Buck's reaction. The only thing Buck responds with is "Christopher's pretty English teacher" which also....was normal ig but still felt weird to me. And then we never get the end of that conversation. We never hear Buck's thoughts about Eddie dating Ana. What!?
And back at the station, Eddie and Buck seem like their engaging in some sort of wordless game of chicken with that love languages fiasco, until Eddie has to cave and tell the team about Ana. And once again, we never hear Buck's thoughts about Eddie dating Ana. Buck, who arguably holds the most important opinion for Eddie, neither affirms nor denies.
And then! At the end! When Eddie leaves to meet Ana! And the camera shows us Buck's face....and he's confused! The implication here being Eddie did not consult with Buck about this date. He did not tell him period. Which begs the question: why? They share everything. They're best friends. I would have grilled my bff if I was in Eddie's shoes.
It's just so WEIRD. It felt like Buck and Eddie were trying to clock each other the entire episode and either just could not get on the same page or missed the point entirely. I wouldn't be so upset about it if this pattern of Buck and Eddie pointedly not talking to each other about these complex and important moments in their lives didn't carry on throughout the rest of the season. Anyway. I am so sorry this got so long. I had to come out of hiding at Tim's house to comment bc I love this.
Hi friend, so glad you forgive me 😂 You are onto something here…I know you’re thinking about Jinx, but now I’m wondering…when was the last time we saw Buck and Eddie converse onscreen about their romantic partners or love life in general?
I can only really recall their talk about Shannon and how sex complicates things in season 2. Of course in Fools, Buck teases Eddie about snapping at Ana so it’s implied that they talked about her/the situation, and in Jinx he recognizes the name, but we never saw them really talk about Abby or Shannon or Ali (and now Taylor and Ana). Of course, in season 3 it was important that they were both single and working through some things, so love interests weren’t there, and they can’t be discussed if they aren’t there, but…we didn’t even see conversations about previous relationships.
It’s just an interesting contrast to Hen and Chim, Hen and Athena, Bobby and Michael, Buck and Bobby, etc etc. Of course, they are best friends and they discuss important things having to do with the job and with Chris and with their mental health, but they seem to be the only friend pairing that doesn’t spend a lot of time discussing their love lives. Obviously they talk about it off screen sometimes, but..why do we never see it?
You’ve given me much to think about as always @kitkatpancakestack thanks for leaving your post at Tim’s house to come and visit with me!

Okay but. Buck getting set up on a blind date. He goes reluctantly. He ends up sitting down. Not a few minutes later Eddie comes in. The server seats him directly behind buck. Buck's like oh no did they Get you into this too? And Eddie admits yes he's on a blind date. So they chat quietly while waiting for their dates to show up. Buck says he's only doing it because he wants maddie to stop asking he's fine as he is right now but if he'll be respectful and let them down easy either way. Eddie admits he's nervous that he won't click with her because he'll barely know her. Buck reassures him he's there for support and he can just be nice and polite then never see her again after telling the truth. So the waiters come for their drinks and they only get water as they mingle a bit turning around once in a while to see eye to eye and encourage one another before their dates. Their dates are still not there and almost a half hour late when buck guesses maybe he's been stood up but something probably happened to Eddie's date though so don't worry. Buck goes to the restroom to ask maddie did the person she set him up with change their mind. She says she's not sure maybe they just weren't ready to date yet. Meanwhile Eddie asks Hen did something happen to them or their car break down. She says no they take good care of it and should have been there by now that's unlike them but maybe something else came up it's not on Eddie she knows they like Eddie. So bucks back from the restroom and decides fuck it and moves to the seat opposite from Eddie ditching his booth for Eddie's and ordering a beer. Eddie gets one too but says don't let him have another he's driving and he's on medication earning a groan as buck's almost off it two weeks left before his final check up to confirm it. Eddie's like you're lucky I'm letting you get one dude it's your health and tonight's been sucky but don't overdo it. His eyes pleading, they're not at buck's place and buck agrees Eddie's right getting a grin back that causes a blush. So they're just relaxing talking about things that happened recently then going their separate ways before work tomorrow. It isn't until chimney is talking to Hen about buck's bad date maddie was worried about that he puts two and two together asking wait did you not tell them who they were on a date with? Hen replying of course not maddie said it'd be a blind date so they could have an open mind. He then says did you book a reservation? Seeing the gears turning in hen's head. Oh God. Because maddie did too chimney explains he looks over as buck and Eddie are sitting on the couch. He then tells Hen "don't worry I got it from here." With a wink before walking over. "So Eddie how was you're blind date with Buck?" "We just had a beer ate and left. They were a no show." "Hmm. Well it's a good thing you two were both there to pass the time. What are the chances?" I mean." Buck jumps up. "It was you!" "I wouldn't sabotage your date buck. You're my best friend man." Eddie says. "No. You were my date, that maddie set up. We didn't realize it." Eddie just starts laughing as Hen and Bobby walk over. "Who upset Eddie?" Bobby asks worrying about him rubbing away tears. "No one. We're just too hard headed to see what was right in front of us." Eddie catches his breath leaning against buck. "It is a little funny." Buck admits now holding back a grin. "So your first date was good then?" Hen asks smiling at Buck. "Oh, no." At Eddie's confused face buck continues. "It was good but that doesn't count. Our first dates gonna be better knowing it's a date." "Well, until then I'll be holding into my congratulations and some paperwork for you two. I'm gonna start on lun-" the alarm cuts him off sending them running.
