Once you get to a certain amount of Known on the internet or a subsection of it, or even in a subsection of a RL group of people, there are going to be people who will make up a version of you which exists only in their heads and which has absolutely nothing to do with who you are. It might better resemble who you were twenty years ago or it might never have had anything to do at all with who you were then or are now.

You cannot stop this. You cannot prevent this. Once you get a certain number of followers or a certain amount of attention, that's going to happen: people will make up stories about you which either look through a fun-house mirror at some small aspect of who you are and twist it and blow it up until it doesn't resemble you at all, or which just have absolutely no basis in fact whatsoever.

This is just another kind of parasocial relationship; it's the kind which really sucks to deal with, because it's so negative and so pervasive. It's very real, and the frustration you feel about it is very real. Nobody wants to be known incorrectly.

But. You can't control this. It's gonna happen. No matter what you say, no matter how precisely you say it, the people who want to misinterpret you will find a way to do so. This doesn't mean 'don't pay attention to what you say,' or 'don't be purposeful and precise with your language,' but it does mean 'don't obsess over the people who are determined to get you wrong.'

You can be the most anodyne, run-of-the-mill, unremarkable human being, and the people who are determined to hate you will find something that they can point to and say 'ha ha! I told you that Spider danced with the devil at midnight! I witnessed it myself!' (It will not help the situation if you are, say, self-admittedly stubborn as fuck, long-winded, and sometimes kinda fucking obnoxious, but please realize that in the end, it doesn't really matter. This is gonna happen no matter what.)

The people who matter will look at what's being said, wrinkle up their foreheads, and say, 'uh, man, it looks like Spider was actually playing with his dog at 9 am?'

That said, if you don't have elephant-thick skin from being a marginalized-gender human being who's been on the internet since before the web had pictures, there are some things you can do to make it easier when people making things up about you starts to get on your nerves:

Establish protocols for when it becomes too much: have someone read your messages, turn off your notifications, have time where you purposefully disengage.

Establish protocols for how you interact, period: "I will block people without guilt if they engage positively with the people who spread untruths about me." "I will answer everything in public so people can't lie about what I said, because it's right there in public." "I will not answer work-related stuff in DMs, that has to go to the work email." Whatever it is, create some boundaries for yourself. Stick to them. The people who push you to bend them aren't doing that for your benefit but theirs.

If you get someone who really hits your Weirdo Alarm, trust it. Yeah, block and report, but also, take screenshots and store them somewhere that isn't easily erased. I have an 'Internet Weirdos' folder, which makes it a little easier to deal with when people start doing things like 'making threats of physical harm to me and my family.' Don't fuss, just take a screenshot and chuck it in the folder. Having that record makes it easier to just forget that it ever happened, because you have a paper trail if anybody starts doing something Real Weird.

Spend time offline, with people who do actually know you.

Don't get lost in the version of you that someone else makes up in order to make up for the shit that's missing in their own life. You aren't required to play the part that someone else is trying to script for you. It is never to your benefit, only to theirs; you gain nothing by standing in that role for them, and you lose precious seconds of your one irreplaceable life.

Day 2 - Favorite PreCure

Challenge Directory

If you've already read my Cure Passion analysis, I think you can already tell my selection for my favorite character. However, that's boring to talk about her again, so I'll add my other top 5 characters alongside her.

5th favorite - Cure Fortune

Number one, fuck you if you're one of the people who horribly mischaracterize Iona as a narcissistic bitch towards Hime. I mean, can you imagine having your sister get kidnapped and have literal hell released upon the world because a child was fucking around? If you ask me, Iona is actually the most complex and well written character in this absolute dumpster fire of a season. She has very strong and real motivations as a PreCure, and learns to grow more fond of Hime, finding it in herself to let go of her grudge. I do think she's very overhated, for no good reason. Also voiced by queen Haruka Tomatsu, so that's a bonus.

4th favorite - Cure Muse

First of all, Ako has to be up there for one of the most badass preteens ever! And just such a cutie :)). As much as I wish we got more of her, what we did see of her in Suite was pretty cool. The moral ambiguity in her character is done really well - being split between protecting a person you love that's doing misdeeds vs. saving the lives of many people and forcing yourself to fight against the one you love. That's a story beat I really hope PreCure explores more of someday, because it does make for some very interesting discussions. Again, my only complaint is that she was introduced way too late. An episode 36 debut is far too late of a debut for a midseason character.

3rd favorite - Cure Moonlight

The Heartcatch writers really did not do her justice with her backstory, she's really is just their punching bag lmao. Though seriously, I love Yuri so much. She is the perfect embodiment of guilt, and her arc about coming to terms with that guilt is excellently written. This is an excellent lesson to be teaching the audience as well - your guilt may always stick and linger around you, but you shouldn't let that hinder you from moving forward. Don't let it consume you: learn how to live with it and learn from those failures. As Yuri says herself:

"The cycle of sorrow can only be broken if you're willing to let go and move on."

2nd favorite - Cure Aqua

This may be surprising, but I absolutely LOVE Karen. I have a bit of a soft spot since she was my first favorite character when I first got into PreCure. Her aloofness in her introduction episodes is something I relate to on a personal level, as well as her initial arc about failing to become a PreCure because of her mindset of doing everything by herself. She fails to become a PreCure at first because her desire to become one doesn't come from a place of genuine desire to protect those that are dear to her, but rather from a place of obligation. Of course she eventually learns that she doesn't have to handle things on her own, and joins as a PreCure. Most importantly, I love how her desire to care for other people manifests in her overall arc of finding her dream career as a doctor, which is very fitting as it's a career devoted to caring for other people and she's a very damn hard worker.

Also Karen is just super pretty. And smart. And badass! Seriously, I want to be like her <3

1st favorite - Cure Passion

Wow, who could've guessed? I don't want to spend too much time talking about her - if you want more of that, just read my Setsuna analysis. To summarize, her arc is just phenomenally done. Her redemption arc is done with such a delicate amount of care. There are so many layers to her character, making her equal parts tragic and complex, and I hesitate to use the word "flawless" to describe a character, but really, I can't think of anything about Setsuna I don't like. I love her so much, and I'm waiting for the day a character is able to top her.

You know now that I'm looking back on what I've just written, I just realized they're all from older PreCure seasons. I guess I've got a thing for them, huh?

Well, it’s official: Presidential nominee Kamala Harris has tapped Tim Walz to be her running mate. While I was still holding out hope for a Harris/Whitmer ticket, I think Walz is the best choice among the men the Vice President was said to be considering. The Minnesota governor is charming, funny and relatable—the internet says he has ‘dad energy’—and he’s clearly eager to take on Republicans. After all, it was Walz who started calling JD Vance and Donald Trump “weird,” an attack that’s working in the polls and has since been adopted by Harris’ campaign. Walz is also very strong on abortion rights, an issue that has become even more central to the presidential election now that Harris is the nominee. So it’s no surprise that while abortion rights groups are lauding Walz as the VP pick, anti-abortion activists and organizations are losing their collective shit. More on that soon, but first let’s get into Walz’s history on abortion and why the issue is so personal to him.

Walz & Abortion Rights

Walz won reelection in 2022 by campaigning on abortion rights, and under his leadership, Minnesota became the first state to codify abortion protections after Roe was overturned. Walz signed the PRO Act in January 2023, a law guaranteeing the right to abortion, birth control and other reproductive healthcare. And while abortion was already legal in Minnesota, the PRO Act added a vital extra layer of protection. Walz said, “No matter who sits on the Minnesota Supreme Court, this legislation will ensure Minnesotans have access to reproductive health care for generations to come.”

He also told CNN at the time, “This is very simple, very right to the point…We trust women in Minnesota.” In keeping with that vow to trust women, Walz also signed an executive order banning state agencies from cooperating with out-of-state investigations into abortion ‘crimes,’ and later signed a law that does the same. Minnesota’s Reproductive Freedom Defense Act shields abortion patients and providers from out-of-state legal or disciplinary actions for providing legal care; prohibits Minnesota agencies from enforcing out-of-state subpoenas, arrest warrants, and extradition requests; and protects patient records and privacy.

Walz has been open about his family’s IVF story, especially after the Alabama Supreme Court decision that frozen embryos were “extrauterine children.” Both of Walz’s children with his wife Gwen—Hope and Gus—were born with the help of IVF. Walz says, “It’s not by chance that we named our daughter Hope.”

Anti-Abortion Response

As soon Harris’ campaign announced Walz as her running mate, anti-abortion groups didn’t waste a moment before attacking the Minnesota governor as an extremist. Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America released a statement calling Harris-Walz “the most pro-abortion Democratic ticket yet,” claiming that Democrats have “become the ‘Shout Your Abortion’ party, with no limits for any reason.” If only! Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life, said, “Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are both radically pro-abortion and see the lives of precious unborn babies as disposable inconveniences.” And Students for Life president Kristan Hawkins called them “the most radically pro-abortion ticket in American history.” (I love the idea that a woman who wants to see birth control banned thinks she has the standing to call anyone “radical.”) Hawkins’ group also tweeted that Walz “supports killing babies up until the moment of birth & even moments after the baby is born.” As I’ve noted before, this horrific ‘post-birth’ abortion lie being pushed by Trump is gaining Republican steam. It was just a few days ago, in fact, that Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Harris and Democrats support “abortion up until birth and even after birth.”

The pick of Tim Walz as Vice-President nominee for Kamala Harris is a godsend for reproductive rights and abortion access, especially in the post-Roe climate.

See You In My 19th Life pre finale thoughts

I was not planning on watching this show, but I'm having a Shin Hye-sun moment, thanks to her absolute brilliance in Stranger. This show has grown on me like a weed, so here we are 🥲. Spoilers!

Age IS problematic in Ji-eum's and Seo-ha's relationship - not in the sense of the 1000 year old spirit falling for a 10 year old boy, but in the sense of someone who gains awareness of their soul's immortality at the ripe old age of 9. That's an essential tension in the show's depiction of past lives - asking what happens to a child who gains this knowledge, especially if that child is vulnerable. Rich, cherished 12 year old Jo-won reacts to this knowledge by running straight into her mother's arms; poor and neglected 9 year old Ji-eum immediately thinks to hustle her way out of poverty, driven by memories of a happier past life where the love around her sustained her childhood until her death. The young actresses - who perform and are directed wonderfully - don't play her as an adult in a child's body, but as a child translating ageless knowledge through their intrinsically childish filter. Her love of Seo-ha is equal parts endearing and disturbing for this reason - memories of loving him in a happier past life are impressed on a 9 year old child, who then devotes herself to becoming the kind of woman who can stand by his side, who can protect and care for him. And in order to do this, she has to be "successful"; therefore, her fixation on reuninting with him is tangled up in her desperate attempts to escape poverty and neglect. Which is why I'm OBSESSED with Shin Hye-sun's performance. A lot of people have already picked up on Ji-eum's general weirdness - what I love is the calculated poise of her body language, as if she's crafting herself into the picture of dignity in direct reaction to the indignity of her early childhood. There's one moment I'm obsessed with in episode 8, where she bumps heads with Seo-ha and she's in pain...but then she bounces back, asking him if he's okay, refusing to show him any vulnerability. This is also why I love that the writing forces her family into Seo-ha's path - he meets her brother, her father, he learns the role they played in Ju-won's murder; he sees this painful, messy side of her too. This really endears me to their romance - it's melancholic and twisted, but I want them to find happiness in their sad little love story.

SYIM9L is very ambitious for a 12-episode show - different plotlines with different emotional tenors all existing in increasing dissonance with each other. Less is more, I think. The story about child murder is awkwardly triangulating with the story about fated love, and the outcome reads clumsy. Poor Min-gi. A love triangle that is constantly perpetuating itself across different lives might be fascinating in itself - but if the show wanted to place Ji-eum/Seo-ha in a story of past histories/fate/free-will, it...was already doing that? The murder mystery is a story of parents devouring their children - one father attempts to kill his son (allegedly), another unwittingly kills his daughter in another life. And these choices, made before either were born, play a role in how Seo-ha and Ji-eum relate to one another. Personally, i don't think she chose to pursue him, I think it was an inescapable compulsion because she was desperate and she was NINE. The concept of free will is invariably complicated because the character making the choices was a vulnerable child. Episode 8 has been the high point for me, because it touches on the helplessness felt when you realise how deeply the adults in your life have let you down; by externalising that helplessness via reincarnation (your daughter's soul is the soul of a child you murdered - your father killed you in a past life for money), it feels all the more raw and upsetting. I just find it more compelling than whatever is going on with their first-lives.

Ha Yoon-kyung's cuteness has the precision and potency of a long-range ballistic missile. Love you queen.

Okay, it's morning and I've been thinking about this all night, let me drop my thoughts into the void so maybe they'll leave me alone.

I'm going to start by saying I think my argument is stronger for 2012 across the board. This thought process started with me trying to understand why 2012 hit my brain weird, and then trickled over to Rise.

So this is related to two writing trends I noticed developing in cartoons through the 2010s. I mean there are definitely more than two trends in writing changes during that time period, but there are two that are specifically relevant here:

The rise of interconnected stories with continuity and consequences

The shift to character-centric narratives

Most of you probably follow what I mean already, but let me be self-indulgent and over-explain myself.

So, first, the long-term stories. Hm.

Let's start with setting up where we were in the 2000s, which is: extremely episodic. And sure, that never entirely went away - but I think we all remember it was very different then.

Think of some of the decently- to well-known shows from that time: Teen Titans, Justice League, Tumblr darling Danny Phantom. My personal taste and biases may be showing, but you get the point. These didn't really... have long-form story telling.

It's not that there were no plot threads spread out over a season. Teen Titans comes first to mind, with the several connected episodes with Slade and Red X before the season finale where Slade blackmails Robin (spoilers for a 2000s show, I guess?). But, how should I put this... even with this, the Status Quo was strong and all-consuming.

Because even though these episodes were connected to each other, each individual adventure was self-contained in and of itself. Unless it was a multi-part, it was VERY unlikely you would be dealing with the consequences or fallout of the previous episode in the next. It would be put on the shelf until they were ready to talk about it again.

And it makes sense! In the era of TV, there was a large sense of wanting episodes to be largely playable/understandable in any order (for rerun purposes, or random kids watching at random times, I presume). So, that's the style of the 2000s: scattered adventure stories, with the many of the shows we remember fondly having a handful of episodes scattered in that developed a particular thread/theme.

But with the success of Avatar: the Last Airbender, the move to streaming and the rise of binge watching, and probably a bunch of other things, telling a longer story seemed like less of a risk - and so we moved into the shows of the 2010s. and beyond. Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Voltron (for better or worse), She-Ra, the Owl House, and more.

These are shows that keep continuity and let consequences spill over from one episode to the next. More, these shows generally have a feeling that they're going somewhere, rather than being structured to let them keeping making episodes as long as profitable possible.

Using the first season of the new She-Ra, for example - which I think is the most traditionally episode-y season - there is an on-going cause and affect.

Adora finds out everything is a lie and becomes She-Ra, so Glimmer takes her home, so the rebellion is revitalized and we get several episodes recruiting people, which then collides with the villain b-plot, so then we have to go on a rescue mission, so then -

You see what I mean.

Most 2010s/2020s cartoons seem to have this - if to different levels and in different ways. Continuity becomes important, the content of an episode effected by the previous one.

And this is very TMNT 2012.

I've talked about the tube Goldberg machine-like effect a lot of the writing has, and I've gushed about the payoff of the season 2 finale.

And the inter-connectedness increases as the seasons go on (and as we get further into the 2010s). A lot of the space arc episodes spill directly into each other, and the episode with April and the Aeon crystal was set up over the preceding episodes - it's built up from the initial "consequences of this new person being introduced" schema used in the first seasons.

Rise on the other hand.... That description of 2000s shows? A couple self-contained but connected plot episodes in the midst of individual adventures? Yeah, that's how Rise is structured.

There is a hint of the 2010s in that, somewhere along the way, let's average it out and say around Shadow of Evil, you do get the sense that the plot episodes are going somewhere with intent, which is less common in the 2000s, but... Yeah then we're right back to Shenanigans. Very 2000s.

Which is part of the reason I find it baffling hearing about people comparing Rise to Teen Titans Go - the implied messaging being, rather than Teen Titans proper. Because yes, TT had the Terra arc, and the Trigon arc... but it also had an episode where Starfire went through alien puberty and ran away rather than let people look at her and possibly call her ugly/laugh at her. Like, yes, there were (very good!) serious episodes, but those were between honestly a lot of silly. Rise is very much in the spirit of many 2000s shows.

So now we move on to the character writing point. There's a lot I could say about the change in character writing moving through the 2010s. How a push-back against the late 2000s uber-cynicism and irony culture likely led to a resurgence of sincerity that merged with increasing mental health awareness to create more thoughtful character arcs. How, again, the success of A:tLA probably led to executives being more willing to accept those kinds of pitches.

But what I really want to focus on here is the centrality of character in the narrative moving through the 2010s.

That is, what is the show About?

Let's start with a 2010 example this time: the new She-Ra again. Here's two descriptions of the show:

A young girl learns she is secretly a powerful magic princess. Upon discovery, she rebels against the evil empire that raised her to team up with other princesses to turn the tides of war, freeing the world from the empire's threat - and maybe even from threats beyond the world.

A young girl learns her life is a lie and turns against the empire that raised her, starting a turn of events that leads her and everyone connected to her to have to reckon with their pasts, their trauma, and the effects of the cycle of abuse.

So. These are both accurate, right? They both describe the show. But... The second one is a bit more what the show's actually about, right? It's about Adora and Catta processing the effect Shadow Weaver had on them. It's about Glimmer's rage at the Horde and grasping for control. It's even, whatever your opinion is on this, about how Hordak is mimicking the behavior of the cult that gave birth to him.

The whole war thing is just framing for these character and thematic arcs. The plot serves the character story, rather than the characters existing to interact with the plot (if you can deal with me probably butchering the meaning of those terms). You get me?

And because the character arcs tend to be centralized, all the stuff I mentioned at the beginning of this section becomes more important. There's more thought towards the character's internal worlds, keeping up consistency and continuity in the character - you're far less likely to see characters twisted and jerked into shapes to match the story they want to tell that episode with no regard to the bigger picture of the character (looking at you, Danny Phantom).

As much as we may love characters from 2000s shows, they weren't really about their characters in the same way.

What would I say with Teen Titans? "A group of powered teens have to overcome their pasts that left them disconnected from their communities to learn to trust and support each other"? I mean, yeah, technically... But it feels less accurate than "a bunch of super powered teems decide to create a super hero group, navigating their quirks as they work together to save the day from a motley group of villains!". You know?

It's not that there is no character work - otherwise we wouldn't love these casts as much as we do - it's just that the strength tended to come from what I consider character voice rather than development of their internal worlds. And they're journey is definitely not central to the over-arcing story (though there generally. isn't an over-arcing story. but you get it.)

((Although there's an argument to be made that the shows we remember most fondly were the predecessors that started playing with the concept of character development before it reached the long-form state we see in the 2010s.))

So now we go back to turtles.

I like the 2012 show, but I think we kinda know it's not really About the turtles, as characters. We're not here to experience their internal worlds and how they process these events - we're here to see these Personalities interact with the Plot.

Instead the show is very much About counter-acting the Shredder with a bit of Kraang thrown in (if there is a character-based About, it's in the history between Splinter and the Shredder), and the characters are positioned and written as much as they need to be to make that story work.

And they do have strong character voice! You can tell how they'd talk, identify the cadence of their voice, their likely surface-level reactions to things. But I generally find it difficult to find much of a through-line for them when it comes to any, like... internal world or development. The plot may rarely get put away on a shelf episode-to-episode, but character bits certainly were.

((I saw a post once talking about how they would do these gut-wrenching Splinter episodes with the Rat King, and then put him right back on the shelf and forget about him, and... first off, Yes. Second, I kinda feel like they do this to some level with... all of their characters.))

Which, I think this comes down to the fact that a character-central narrative is not the story the writers were trying to tell! Not every story has to be About a character. But, because the two changes I've been talking about - long-form plot and centering character arcs - happened simultaneously, I - and maybe you - subconsciously began to treat them as the same thing, or else expect that where one was present, the other would automatically be as well.

So, I saw the fantastic work they did on the inter-connected plot lines and subconsciously kept waiting for the long-form, consistent character arcs to kick in... and was left feeling like I missed my step on the stairs every time they didn't.

Once I sort of... understood what the writers intent was, I was better able to meet the show where it's at (and grab all the stuff they weren't interested in for fandom creation, "free real estate" style).

Now let's move back to Rise.

So, okay. This might be the weakest part of my argument, because.... Such a high percentage of the show is the Shenanigans that it's hard to make an About statement not about... That.

BUT. For the sake of the argument. When you think about the scattered, 2000s style plot episodes in Rise. What's the through-line? What is the story those episodes are trying to tell? What's the intent of the writers?

Is it about preventing the rise of an ancient evil and fighting the Shredder? Or is it more about family bonds? About Splinter's rejection of his family history and the cost of that. About his relationship with his sons, and the repair of it. About the brother's coming into themselves?

Is it "Trust us the way we trust you"? Is it "You taught us the important thing - be there for each other"? Is it "You are not alone"?

Does every plot point wrap back around to the characters and their relationships?

And even in the many Shenanigans episodes, there is a commitment to character consistency that means when the serious moments come, they don't feel out of place or disconnected from what we've seen before.

I've written before that Rise has this interesting little joke, joke, oh you were serious trick that takes it a long way. Minotaur Maze comes before Portal Jacked comes before Many Unhappy Returns (comes before Lair Games). Stuck On You comes before Pizza Puffs comes before the Finale. Bug Busters comes before Turtle-dega Nights. I wish I got to see what Hot Soup: the Game was leading to.

There are character moments/arcs that are consistent and intentionally set up. The writing treats it as important to the core of the show.

Mind you, if 2012 threw my brain off, having this kind of intentional character work without the matching plot continuity can also feel weird. I imagine many people got a similar "missing the stairs" feeling as I did with 2012 while waiting for the plot to kick in for Rise.

Anyways! That is my half-baked, rambling thesis for where 2012 and Rise fits into the general trends of writing and children's cartoons, which I think explains some of their quirks and maybe a bit of different people's reactions to them.

How right (or wrong) am I?

I've got this thought I'm turning over in my head like a rubix cube that goes something like "TMNT 2012 had 2010s era plot writing with 2000s era character writing, while ROTTMNT had 2010s era character writing with plot writing that leaned towards the 2000s era style" and I'm trying to decide how right I am about that.
