Hear me out: so Dean’s propane fueled dream in Showdown at Cremation Creek shows he knows about The Neverending Story, right?

Makes sense he’d seen the movie, but what if he had read the book also? It is radically different from the movie, an exploration on what would happen to a lonely kid had they decided to live entirely in their dream world.

Anyways there’s this scene where Bastian the protagonist has lost all his memories and needs to find one to safely return home, at risk of staying in his dream world as a mindless fool. After some grueling work he finds one, even if he can’t remember who it is. It’s an image of his father, trapped in a block of ice, heartlessly slaving away at a job he takes no pleasure from. Bastian knows the man is important to him and loves him instinctively, even if he doesn’t remember having a relationship with him.

Now imagine if you will, a kid Dean being kinda moved at the scene and forgetting it, and an adult Dean that revisits it and suddenly, it clicks.
