1. How many works do you have on AO3? 19 baybeee
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 2,319,545. I am. Verbose.
3. What fandoms do you write for? Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Legend of Zelda, Ace Attorney, Mystic Messenger, and then I wrote the novelization of the song 6969 by Ninja Sex Party and a Caduceus character study for CR.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Indefensible (Ace Attorney) has 1,234 (HA!)
As Bright as the Stars (Mystic Messenger) has 1111 (ALSO HA)
Tearing Down the Heavens (Dragon Age: Inquisition) has 730
Hundred Years in the Making (LoZ: Breath of the Wild) has 627

Genuinely really surprised none of the Mass Effect fics are in this category, I'm so proud of those XD
5. Do you respond to comments? Absolutely always, whenever possible. lol I will also ramble at anyone that asks me questions.
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Probably The Traveler, which I warn you from the very start has a sad ending. It's Dragon Age fic retelling the stories Solas tells of his time dreaming in the Fade, with the trappings of a Doctor Who theme in which he travels through the fade with a series of companions.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Uhhhhhhh I think probably We Are Ferelden comes closes to a happy ending? Eventually I will give my DA series an actual happy ending though. Most of them end either bittersweet in some way or as a sort of non-ending ending because I know the story continues.
8. Do you get hate on fics? I've gotten a wee bit of hate on the Zelda fic, Hundred Years in the Making, but it was fairly mild. I don't really respond to it much though because it's hard for a stranger to say something that will actually hurt my fee fees XD
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Oh yeah, sure. Most my fics contain smut of some kind. I don't really write smut without plot, though, it's gotta be a natural part of the narrative or I just lose interest.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I have not. I just haven't thought of one that caught my attention enough to want to write it down.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I'm aware of. I have had some lines and suggestions used, but usually that's with credit. lol now I HAVE had jokes and things I've said stolen but that's a bit different.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Nope! I'd prob be open to it but I'd deffo want credited as the OG author.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes! I think it's been orphaned now though lol
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? I CAN'T CHOOSE THIS. But prob Shakarian.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? I will finish all my WIPs, how dare you doubt me. (The Traveler would have been my choice for this but I FINISHED IT NOW MOTHERFUCKER)
16. What are your writing strengths? Words....go many. Big words. lmao honestly I don't ever really know. I think I'm good at characterization.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Brevity.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I do it sometimes, but usually make an author's note that it's done with shitty translation software so it will not be Authentic. (if I were putting it in a novel I'd prob pay to have someone look it over, but fic is free and thus my resources put into it are limited lol)
19. First fandom you wrote for? I'm gonna assume the AU crossover I wrote for Pokemon/Dragonriders of Pern/Zelda/Narnia when I was 9 does not count. lol it was Dragon Age tho
20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written? My Mass Effect series, I think. I love different things about all my fics, usually because I was doing different things in all of them, but A Name for the Stars trilogy is something that I'm most proud of. Almost every scene in that serves a plot purpose and I wove a LOT of different things together to create one cohesive thing, and I think if you can get through all of it, it has the biggest bang for the buck. Also I burned that realllll slow XD

Am a Windows user, have never used anything but windows, am comfortable with windows.
Convince me to linux. Explain
I’m going to keep this short because I could make this infinitely long.
In a world where you really cannot trust big companies, windows has gotten very self conscious that they could track and sell every piece of data from their customer and add unnecessary features and no one would notice it, even though it actually makes the user experience worse. If you don’t have a key, you probably also have to over a hundred dollars just for some basic amenities, like changing a wallpaper.
Linux, in the other hand, is free and open source software (FOSS), which, in its simplest form, means that all the code is there for you to change and revise. Because of this openness, most Linux distros usually never have features to sell your data, and if they do, someone’s bound to make a patch to have that not happen. This means that Linux is much more safe and secure than windows by a long shot, and you really don’t have to worry about your information being sold to dubious companies.
Linux, with all its FOSS-ness, also allows anyone to make theirs distro look anyway you want. For instance, I personally prefer the look of MacOS to Windows (I know, probs controversial opinion). On windows, it’s be a pain in the ass to get it that way, especially without a key, while in Linux you can easily do that with relative ease, as long as you have a guide. Linux is just more freedom, something probably over said but still very true.
There’s other reasons why people would want to switch to Linux to. I didn’t really note that it’s less “bloated” than windows, which means that it has a lot less unnecessary features and thus will run way faster on any computer, especially old ones. Bloat has been kinda a controversial word in the community, since people like to argue that some distros are worse because they have more features. However, no matter what you choose, it’ll probably be better than windows.
The biggest drawback to Linux, in my opinion, is obviously app compatibility. I’ve mentioned gaming before, but that’s something that’s seedy vastly improved over the years. However, some popular apps are just incomparable with Linux, most notably the entire adobe suite and (unsurprisingly) Microsoft office. There’s a couple other things you can do to circumnavigate this.
You can try to find alternatives. GIMP works as a nice alternative to photoshop, Davinci Resolve has native Linux versions, and libreoffice is probably capable enough to replace word or PowerPoint.
You can try to install wine and pray to god it’ll work (though it probably won’t).
You can run a virtual machine and run windows with that, thought that’s not GPU accelerated and thus might be laggy.
OR, and this is the best option in my opinion, you can dual boot windows along side linux, so if you really need to use it, it’s there as an option. If you’re going to do this option, make sure to install windows first before Linux (because of some stupid thing where it erases it in grub or smtn) and that the two operating systems are on separate drives. Also try to debloat windows though guides on YouTube, but know that it won’t be as private as Linux.
Honestly, that’s as much as I have to say about the subject matter. Others are free to add on, since I probably missed a few things. You might not like it at first, but I do encourage you to at least try it. Hell, you might even like it so much that using windows is now alien to you (like me, lmfao).
Hope this helped, and remember, never type “sudo rm -rf /” in the terminal. (Aw fuck, I forgot to explain the terminal. Oh well, I hope someone can explain it to you, and if you get stuck on it there’s always guides online)

Don't get me wrong. I'm doing great. By any objective measure, iv gotten insanely lucky several times and my life is perfect as a direct result. But that's not enough? i want to make things that aren't just talking about me. I wanna write an epic, but i have no idea what gimmick to lean on since my characters are 1D props. I wanna do an expository video essay or two, but my speaking voice and writing style are so different as to be incomparable. I don't care one way or the other about drawing stuff, i can put a single accurate line or lots of approximate ones but never into anything more complex than basic polygons. When i hack on Linux im just sticking other ppls software on to eachothdr. My emacs config, the biggest thing iv made ever, literally has no point anymore except to make itself easier to edit

Good afternoon ♡ Hope you're well and having a great weekend! ^^
So here's the thing. I was about to go on Ao3 to re-read a bit of the creepiverse when I came across "not the kind of roulette you want to go betting on". How come I didn't read it before I don't know?! The point is, I loved it, like soooooo much! Can you please write what happened next? I don't care if it makes sense or not, I want to see how it goes!
He felt the shot reverberate in his bones more than he heard it, time stretching and slowing, parsing it into a two-parted thing: Click, BANG!
But when there was no sting, no sudden pop of a blank punching against his skin, when there was no stopping to Ashley's high, keening screaming, when the saws hit the end of their tracks and continued to slice harmlessly through the air...that's when he opened his eyes again.
It was something of a cliche in movies and books, the protagonist 'not knowing what they'd expected to find,' but what was happening there underneath the lodge wasn't a movie - wouldn't be, at least, until he'd had a couple gos at it in his editing software, trimming the fat and tightening the screws. That was a long way of saying Josh had expected something, had known in his heart of hearts, soul of souls, and even deep in his marrow, he was the one Chris was going to shoot, he was the one meant to be sacrificed for the greater good of the group; it was the only choice that made sense.
So as he looked out across the table, the juncture of Chris's jaw already dark and angry from the blank he'd fired at such close range, no one was more surprised than him.
"Well shit," he said slowly, sliding his hands out of his restraints such that he could smooth his hair back out, the saws over their heads going thunk-thunk-thunk as they bounced against their tracks, "I didn't know you had it in you, Cochise."

Igtober Day 24 → Fashion
I thought I was saving myself some time by digging out an unused sketch from last year and repurposing it for this prompt, but what I discovered is that year-old pencil lines are a huge pain in the ass to erase. ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

As if I weren’t behind enough on things, I completely forgot to announce on Tumblr my last special guest for my Extra Life Charity Stream—the incomparable Darin De Paul! @nuts-and-dolts-week - Day 8: Bonus Day!
For Bonus Day, with some inspiration from the FS discord, I gave myself a little challenge to create a story that somehow integrates every prompt for Nuts and Dolts Week! And this is the result!
This has been such a fun event to be a part of, and not only that, this is the first ship week I’ve ever completed! That may not be a huge accomplishment but I’m still super happy 🥰 Thank you to Bio for running this event and to everyone who created content for it, you’re all so talented and sensational!

Nuts and Dolts Week 2021 Stories - MusingsFromMars on AO3
Tomorrow they would graduate from Beacon, but tonight, they would have one more picnic in the Emerald Forest.
With a basket full of food and treats in the crook of her elbow, Ruby walked along with Penny down the familiar hillside trail, hiking into the forest towards what they had begun to call Their Spot. The sun at this point was almost set, bathing the partly cloudy sky with a bright orange hue. An evening picnic might have been unusual to most, but to the couple of soon-to-be huntresses, it was perfect.
Since this would be the last time they’d have a picnic like this together, they both went all-out with their preparations. Penny had dressed in her favorite white flowery dress and sun hat, and even had cute sparkly pink lip gloss, eyeliner, and green eyeshadow (all courtesy of Belladonna Cosmetic Services). Ruby had gone even more formal, wearing a white button-up, black suspenders and bow tie, and a red skirt. Weiss had remarked to her that this was a bit much for a picnic, but Ruby assured her that this was perfect for the occasion. Weiss couldn’t be blamed for not knowing all of her plans, after all. In fact, no one else knew what Ruby was planning for this evening.
Tucked securely in her shirt pocket was a small velvet drawstring pouch. Inside it was a ring, Penny’s ring. Ruby had made it herself. Even though her area of expertise was weapons crafting and not jewelry design, she was happy with how it turned out. She even felt confident that Penny would love it, too. Ruby had made it with her in mind, after all. And tonight would be the night that she would give it to Penny and ask her to marry her.
Ruby felt oddly calm about her plan right now. She had imagined herself being really nervous and unable to keep quiet about her plan for long, but now that they were on their way to the very spot she would propose, Ruby felt confident and at ease. Maybe that was the effect Penny had on her. Ruby always felt more comfortable whenever Penny was nearby. It was as if seeing her happy and safe was enough to put everything in perspective. How bad could a problem be if Penny were there for her?
Once they arrived at Their Spot, Penny unfurled the blanket she’d had tucked under her arm, spreading it out over the grass. From here, the thick treeline blocked out the setting sun, leaving them surrounded by soft shadows and gentle warm hues from the dusk sky.
This was all routine by this point. Penny would lay out the blanket, they’d both sit down and open the basket, and Ruby would start munching away at a sandwich while Penny made some tea (using a kettle, the water they packed, and her ability to hold anything in her hand and superheat it, of course). Penny enjoyed making tea this way because it made it easy to smell the complex aromas. While Penny’s tech advancements still didn’t allow her to taste, she at least had made a breakthrough and could now smell things, and tea was one of her favorites. “I am brewing lavender chamomile,” Penny said to Ruby. “It is the tea we had together the first time we had a picnic here.”
Ruby finished her bite of sandwich and smiled. “I love how you can remember little details like that.”
“I remember most everything,” Penny said. “Though our first picnic is certainly easy to recall. It was a lovely occasion.”
“Besides us starting a minor forest fire with Weiss’ electric kettle,” Ruby recounted with a laugh.
“And that is why we use this method now.” Penny nodded to the kettle, holding its underside. “It is much less dangerous.”
“Yeah, I shouldn’t be trusted around hot surfaces,” Ruby said with a giggle, then took another bite of sandwich. “Do you…” She began, but recalled her manners and swallowed her food before continuing. “Do you remember our first date?”
“Of course,” Penny said with a grin. “The one you essentially had to force me to go on.”
“I didn’t force you, did I?” Ruby asked with a raised eyebrow.
“I was certainly nervous about raising the ire of General Ironwood,” she recalled. “But I am quite thankful you did convince me to go to the arcade with you, even if the General was cross with me.”
“You got so many tickets!” Ruby remembered.
“The patterns and rhythms of those arcade machines were not very sophisticated. They were easily exploited for maximum payout.”
“I still have that big plush frog we got as a prize somewhere,” Ruby remembered. “What did we call him?”
“Mister Bumpy Butt.”
“Mister Bumpy Butt!” Ruby said with a grin. “Because he had—”
“—bumps on his butt!” Penny finished for her.
“I still say he should talk to his frog doctor about that,” Ruby joked.
“Indeed, butt bumps could be a sign of underlying illness.”
Ruby snorted and laughed, leaning over and lying her head on Penny’s shoulder. “Gods, we’re so weird.”
“Yes, but I enjoy being weird with you,” Penny replied, smiling as she leaned her cheek against the top of Ruby’s head.
“As do I,” Ruby agreed.
As Ruby took another bite of sandwich, Penny’s kettle began to whistle, and she retrieved two mugs from the basket. One mug already had a few sugar cubes sitting in the bottom. That was Ruby’s mug, of course. Penny filled both with hot tea and handed one to her. No matter what kind of tea it was, Ruby always had to drink it with sugar (much to Weiss’ and Blake’s horror). She took a careful sip and hummed happily. “Perfect as always, Penny.”
“Why thank you,” Penny beamed and set the empty kettle aside. She cradled her mug with both hands and enjoyed the smell of the tea as steam floated from the mug and into the air. She watched as Ruby sipped her tea, then asked, “Do you remember about a couple years before we met properly in Vale, you had accidentally met me when I was still in development at Atlas Academy?”
Ruby’s eyes went wide, and she had to make sure to swallow her tea lest she choke on it before answering, “I almost forgot all about that!”
Penny grinned and nodded. “You know, my father almost deleted that conversation from my memory for fear of ‘contamination,’ but then figured he had advanced my software far enough to the point that my interaction with you might be beneficial. And it turns out it was!”
“How so?” Ruby asked curiously, sipping her tea a bit more carefully.
“I think back to that meeting, and the way I remember it, from that day forward I had so much confidence when meeting new people. I admit, it took me a while to really understand that I might have been, well...forward with new acquaintances, but I think because you, the first ‘stranger’ I ever met, were so nice to me, it made me so optimistic about meeting new people.” She smiled at Ruby. “And that’s why I have so many friends now. All thanks to you.”
“Thanks to me and my insatiable curiosity,” Ruby added with a giggle. “But that’s honestly really sweet. I’m glad I ran into laptop you all those years ago.”
“That laptop was not the most aesthetically pleasing chassis to inhabit. I mean, I had very little physical self-awareness at that point, but looking back on it…”
“Yeah, you’re way sexier now,” Ruby joked.
“Precisely!” Penny agreed wholeheartedly, once again making Ruby laugh.
The sun had fully set by now, and stars began to dot the dark blue sky. The daytime warmth still lingered, but a gentle breeze began to slowly whisk it away.
“Ruby, look at me.”
Ruby blinked and looked her way, surprised by the suddenness of her request. “Huh?”
Penny only stared at her in the face, not offering an explanation. A few seconds later, she smiled and nodded. “Yep. Quite similar indeed.”
“What?” Ruby asked.
“Your eyes,” Penny said. “They look so similar to the moon when it is dark out.” She looked over Ruby’s shoulder. “But I have never gotten to make a side-by-side comparison until now.”
Ruby turned and looked the same way and saw the shattered moon. It had been just behind her head from Penny’s view. Ruby giggled and looked back at her girlfriend. “You’re so sweet.”
Penny smiled wide, her green eyes practically glowing with happiness.
“You know,” Ruby began, leaning a bit closer to Penny. “I don’t think I could compare your eyes to anything.”
Penny tilted her head to the side a bit. “Oh? How come?”
“I’ve never seen anything like them. They’re just so bright and shiny and green.”
Penny blinked, then her cheeks glowed a faint green. “You mean my eyes are incomparable?”
Ruby hadn’t realized her own romantic turn of phrase, but she smiled and nodded. “Yeah, exactly! There’s nothing in the world quite like your pretty eyes.”
Penny smiled, then leaned forward and kissed Ruby’s cheek. “You are so sweet.” Then her eyes went wide, noticing something else behind Ruby. “Oh, the fireflies!”
Ruby gasped and turned her head quickly, and sure enough, the night’s first lightning bugs were beginning to emerge, darting about and glowing. More and more appeared, blinking in a constant array of light like a visual symphony.
“It has been so long since we have seen so many,” Penny said with delight. “Oh, I am so happy they appeared tonight. You know it is almost as if they knew this was our last picnic here, because at this time of year their numbers typically begin to dwindle due to the changes in weather…”
Penny was once again infodumping about insects and Ruby’s heart swelled with a familiar adoration. She wanted to kiss her so bad, but that would mean interrupting Penny as she talked about the temperature preferences of flying bugs. She held off her desire to tackle her into the grass and pepper her face with kisses until later. In the meantime, she set her tea aside and propped her elbows on her knees, all while watching those aforementioned incomparable eyes as they followed the flights of nearby fireflies as she continued.
It wasn’t until a few minutes later that Penny’s voice began to trail away, and she turned to look at Ruby. “Oh, I have been talking for quite some time, huh?”
“Yeah, but I like listening to you talk about fireflies, Firefly,” Ruby said softly with a smile, still with her hands under her chin, still resting her elbows on her knees.
Penny chuckled bashfully. “They are just such fascinating creatures.”
“Hey Penny?”
“Hm?” Penny turned, her eyes meeting Ruby’s again. With the moon reflecting off her eyes, they almost seemed to shine.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.” Penny smiled gently.
Ruby reached out and took Penny’s hand in hers, then took a moment to look around. “Uhm, here.” She got to her feet, still holding Penny’s hand. “This way.”
Penny stood and followed as Ruby led her off the picnic blanket and onto the grass. They walked through the grass a few steps, fireflies floating about them as if used to their presence. Ruby stopped and faced Penny.
Her heart was pounding in her chest, and despite the slowly falling temperatures outside, she was beginning to feel a little hot under her button-up. Here was the nervousness she expected to feel earlier, springing up just as she was about to do what this entire evening was leading to. She took a breath and fidgeted a bit with her bow tie.
“Are you okay?” Penny asked quietly, still holding one of Ruby’s hands.
“I’m...great,” Ruby said. It sounded like a lie, but it wasn’t. She felt anxious, sweaty, and absolutely fantastic all at once. “Penny, I… I have something to ask you. It’s important.”
Penny nodded, giving her her full attention.
Ruby took a breath and nodded. “Penny, when I told you that you are a real girl, I meant it. That day in that alleyway in Vale, I could see how unsure you were, how scared you were. And yet, when I assured you that you’re as real to me as I am to you, you believed me. I could definitely tell how happy that moment made you feel from how hard you hugged me, but...it made me happy, too. To know that I had said something to make you feel real…” Oh no, tears. Not now, tears. “And you believed me.”
Penny stepped a little closer and nodded. “Of course I believed you.”
Ruby smiled, but she willed herself to continue. “Then that day when I thought you were going back to Atlas. I was so scared because I wasn’t sure if I’d ever get to see you again. I ran to find you, and I confessed to you right then and there that I loved you, that I couldn’t let you leave because I knew that you wanted to stay just as much as I wanted you to stay. And…” She was losing her fight against her tears, one escaping and running down her cheek as a smile grew on her face. “I said I love you. And...you believed me.”
“Of course I believed you,” Penny said again with a soft chuckle. She lifted her hand and gently wiped away Ruby’s tears. “I have loved you since the day we became friends.”
Ruby nodded and sniffed. “So have I.” She wiped at her own face, doing her best to compose herself. She wanted to get this moment exactly right. “And now we’re here tonight, for like the hundred-dozenth time. And…” She stared at Penny for a second, taking in a deep breath. She let it out slowly, then reached into her shirt pocket and pulled out the pouch. Penny’s eyes followed as Ruby loosened the drawstring, flipped the pouch over, and let a ring roll from the bag and into her hand. It was a shiny bronze color, with red and green gems embedded in a zigzag configuration all around the circumference. Ruby pocketed the pouch and held the ring between her thumb and index finger. She looked up at Penny and saw her eyes were wide, as if she were slowly beginning to understand.
“Ruby…?”
“And now I’m asking you to marry me,” Ruby said, chuckling with a grin. “Can you believe that?”
“Ruby…” Penny covered her mouth with her hand.
Ruby got down on one knee, holding the ring up to her. Her nerves were gone, replaced only with a blooming joy in her chest. She will never forget the look on Penny’s face at this very moment. “Penny, will you marry me?”
Penny proceeded to tackle hug her to the ground. Ruby grunted and laughed as her back hit the grass. “Yes!” Penny lied on top of Ruby and smiled down at her. “Yes, I will marry you, Ruby!” She kissed her, and Ruby hummed softly and wrapped her arms around Penny’s neck, deepening the kiss. Her nerves were a distant memory now. Now she felt like she was floating just like the fireflies around them, with the love of her life in her arms.
After their kiss, they both found their way back to their feet. Ruby was glad to have held tight to the ring both during and after getting tackled, and she smiled at Penny as she took her hand. “Well then,” she slipped the ring onto her, a perfect fit. “Just call me fiancée.”
Penny grinned and hugged her again, not tackling her but still squeezing tight. “I love you.”
Ruby hugged her back, happily sinking deeper into the embrace. “I love you too,” she whispered.
After reveling in this embrace for a while longer, Ruby opened her eyes and looked up, seeing the Beacon tower in the distance. In a lot of ways, this place had changed her life. I guess I’m confirming @fyeahmeninroyalnavy’s suggestion that I’m a masochist, because I’m sharing an Archie/Horatio fanvid to “My Immortal”. As you can imagine, it’s a DKU, so watch at your own risk 😅
I started this project months ago, then it got left behind because of lack of time and/or inspiration. I finally got back to it and I had almost finished it when the software decided to crash on me and I lost everything!! I had to start from scratch all over again, and even if it was an editing nightmare, I finally got it done. All of this notwithstanding, I’m quite happy with how it turned out. Hopefully you will enjoy it 😊

A conversation with the lovely @fyeahmeninroyalnavy prompted me to do a Hornblower fic rec post. I'm sure we have some recs in common ;)
I should probably point out that these are all Horatio/Archie recs, because those are the only ones I read (with rare exceptions).

*I feel I have to start with @paraxdisepink's wonderful saga: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 11 | 12 This is the first H/A series that I read, and it will always have a special place in my heart. The saga starts with Horatio and Archie in El Ferrol and in the end finds them two years after Kingston. And in between, there's the best (at least to me) fix-it fic ever, No Quarter Given, where Archie gets to be the hero and saves the day (and Horatio).
*Nunc Atque Semper is an angsty one-shot by the amazing @bbcphile. First Hornblower fic I've ever read, and what a welcome to the fandom it was! It's a DKU that will break your heart...
*Speaking of fics that will break your heart, if When The Wind is Southerly doesn't make you cry, nothing will. It's a LKU with a (tragic) twist. Worth reading. Multiple times.
*I still don't remember how I stumbled upon this series, but thank God (and the Wayback Machine!) that I did. Laurel and Rose is a LONG series, very porny LOL!, and so engrossing that I didn't want it to end. It spans several years (from El Ferrol onward), and has a very weird LKU twist. If you are a H/A shipper and you can overlook the way Archie is resurrected, you will enjoy it a lot.
Modern AUs
*It goes without saying that the incomparable Harboured and Encompassed by @bbcphile has to be on this list. I'm sure that every Hornblower fan has already read this incredible novel. And if you haven't, do it now!
*Another modern version of Archie and Horatio that I thouroughly enjoyed is this series by esmerelda-t. The other stories in the series are a little difficult to find (you have to follow the "modern AU" tag), but they are worth it. The saga starts with Horatio, Archie (and Simpson, ugh) in high school and takes them into their adult life with lots of twists and turns. A truly enjoyable read.
Non-slash H/A
*Red Sky at Morning is a novel-length fic about Horatio and Archie's friendship, and the lengths that Archie will go to in order to protect his friend. It's truly well done, and even though there are a lot of original characters, they are so well written that you will find yourself caring about them too.
There are so many more that I left out, but I had better stop here before this post turns into a novel itself! LOL!

BSG (Lee/Kara) fic recs post
Tagging my friend @fyeahmeninroyalnavy, who (partly because of me, I suppose) has just started watching BSG.
These are all Lee/Kara recs (obviously!). Even though there are TONS of glorious fics out there, this post is about those that are either AUs, or about seasons 1 and 2, with very few spoilers about the rest of the series. It is not meant to be a comprehensive list of the best LK fics, because I am nowhere near to reading everything that’s available.
So, without further ado...
Long stories:
Undertow - This is a mystery AU that takes place between the past and the present. Kara is a PI, while Lee is.. well, I can’t say anything about Lee, or else I will ruin your enjoyment of the story. Let’s just say that the story is so captivating that when you start reading, you’ll find it difficult to stop, because you HAVE to know what happens next.
The Long Game Series - In this AU, Lee and Kara are the Lee and Kara that we know, but the Cylons didn’t attack, and the story takes place on Caprica. They last saw each other on the day of Zak’s funeral, and ten years later, Lee is in for a surprise.
Academy Pilots - There are many L-K Academy AUs, but this is one of the best. It’s VERY hot, but also very romantic, and takes Lee and Kara from their Academy days to the Fall of the Colonies.
One-shots:
Fear of Falling - This one-shot serves as a companion to Colonial Day and Kobol’s Last Gleaming 1. It’s a nice insight into Kara’s mind, and explains why Kara left the party with Baltar.
Naming Conventions - AU, fluff, Lee/Kara and babies. I’m a sucker for baby stories for L/K, and this one is short, sweet but not excessively sugary.
Lee and Kara, Kara and Lee - This takes place after Home Part 1. Kara opens up to Lee about what happened to her on Caprica… Hotness alert :)

there is some scrivener discourse on my dash and i feel strange adding to it given my opinion on Scrivener is entirely based on personal taste and not features, so i don’t think it would be very helpful on that particular post but
i actually have a little Excel Sheet on my computer where I’ve taken notes on some Scrivener alternatives that I tried and maybe i can somehow organize this into a post? I have literally spent hours- hours- searching for Scrivener alternatives because while Scrivener is incomparable in terms of features, organization, etc., i cannot bring myself to like it. the current windows version looks horrendous IMO, and i just can’t actually work well on Scrivener. I can’t tell if it’s because of its general design or because the features, while great, don’t work quite the way i want them to, but yeah. Scrivener and I have a complicated relationship. i’ll use it for a bit because there’s nothing like it, then always get frustrated at it, and then i go back to looking for an alternative, can’t find one, go back to scrivener, etc. (rn i’m back to just plain Word and it’s working out, but I suspect I’ll switch when I reach the revision process.)
so, yeah. again, my opinions on those softwares/alternatives is highly, highly personal (for example, this is, word for word, my notes on quollwriter: “i want to like it but it’s too plain and i’m not feeling it.”) but hey you never know what might help fellow writers so... i might make a post 🌸

But when she starts working at the local library and is unexpectedly assigned in the Children’s Room, a certain monosyllabic man and his thrice-damned demon child start showing up and Iseult begins to wonder if the threads of fate have a plan for her after all.

“I hope you don’t mind me stealing you away.”
Evrane handed Iseult a cup of tea, the porcelain clinking delicately upon its saucer. A lazy swirl of steam rose into the air and Iseult gently blew across the top before taking a timid sip.
“Just what we need,” Evrane sighed, sinking into the high-back chair behind her desk as much as someone with her incomparable posture could. “Nothing like a hot cup of rose tea on a blustering winter morning.”
Iseult hummed in agreement, watching the fat chunks of snow falling outside the window behind Evrane. She had yet to regain feeling in her toes from the walk to work, but the tea and the quietly popping fire in the fireplace was helping.
Evrane’s office was an octagonal room that resided in the second tallest tower of the library. To get there you had to climb a long, winding spiral staircase and the first time Iseult had been invited to her office, she had never been more enchanted in her life. While the expected hints of modern technology littered Evrane’s desk area, the rest of the space was as gothic as the rest of the library, with a functioning fireplace, dark hardwood floors and paneling, and a high-domed ceiling. Bookshelves teeming with hundreds of leather-bound volumes lined the entire perimeter of the office, save for the three arched windows that stood behind the Evrane’s desk and framed her workspace in pale light.
Evrane took a sip from a cup before placing it on her desk. She sat so regal in her chair, yet completely at ease, her elbows resting on the arms and hands clasped together. She radiated assuredness. Purpose. Iseult shifted in her own, hoping to offer a reflection of sophistication to the woman sitting across from her. The leather squeaked awkwardly.
“Did you end up finding that first edition of The Raider King?” Iseult hurried to ask over the echo of that embarrassing sound in her ears, sure it would haunt her in her most unsuspecting moments for many years to come.
Evrane shook her head with a weary smile. “Not yet, but I haven’t lost hope. My attic is more of a time capsule than actual storage space. I haven’t touched some of the boxes up there since I moved from Nubrevna - and that was a significant number of years ago. It will turn up.” She smiled again at Iseult, the flames from the fire danced in her emerald green eyes. Iseult resisted the urge to squirm in her chair again and restored to taking a lengthy sip from her cup.
“So Iseult," began Evrane, a noticeable change in tone. Iseult latched onto it. “I have an idea I’d like to propose to you and I’m hoping you’ll find it as agreeable as I do."
Iseult’s cup froze on her saucer. “An idea?”
“An opportunity,” Evrane amended. “I’ve been quite pleased with how well you’ve taken to your job here, but if these past several months have taught me anything, it’s that you can do much more.”
Iseult blinked in surprise. A ripple of trepidation fluttered in her stomach, nearing something close to pride, but the crypticness of Evrane’s statement made it difficult for her to fully embrace the feeling. “Do… more?”
“Precisely. I’ve sincerely enjoyed our conversations, Iseult. Your repertoire is quite extensive for someone so young. Clearly, you can do more than shelve books. Though,” Evrane chuckled, “there is never a shortage of books to be put away.”
Iseult willed her face react, barely more than a tight-lipped smile. But the rest of her sat very still, hinging on Evrane’s every last word.
“As you know, Nadaya left us a couple weeks ago on maternity leave, and won’t be back until May. Though I've known of her departure for quite some time and despite the a stack of applications waiting to be read through, I find myself reluctant to do so. I was wondering - well, I was hoping - that you would be interested in taking up the mantle.”
“You want me to replace Nadaya?”
“It would only be temporary, of course. But with your knowledge of children’s literature and enthusiasm for YA, I can’t think of a more suitable person to fill the position.”
“I d-don’t have a library science degree.” I don’t have a degree, Iseult thought.
“That hardly matters,” Evrane dismissed, waving a hand, silver bracelet tinkling musically from the motion. She reached for her tea. “At least, while this is temporary. You know books, Iseult. That is what counts."
“But,” Iseult stammered. “Won’t the other librarians mind?"
Evrane’s eyebrows bounced mildly over her teacup. “Mind?”
“I mean, won’t they be bothered to have someone under-qualified hired?”
It was Evrane’s turn to look surprised. “I think they’ll be relieved to finally have someone picking up the slack in the Children’s Room.”
“The Children’s Room.” Iseult swallowed. Of course. That’s where Nadaya worked, so obviously, that would be where Iseult worked. “What would that entail?”
Though Iseult hadn’t accepted yet, Evrane perked up at the question and eagerly set her tea down. “If you’re worried about missing your cart, I promise you there will be plenty of shelving opportunities down in the Children’s Room.”
“Oh. Good,” Iseult replied, trying to keep her voice normal despite the confusing sense of panic welling in her chest. “I’d hate for it to develop abandonment issues.”
Evrane studied Iseult, her expression unreadable, but her gaze seemed to soften. “Really it will be very similar to what you do up here, except now you’ll also work the desk. You’ll check out patrons, check-in returned books, assist patrons when needed. You don’t have to contribute to any programming, except for potentially covering the occasional story time. Unless you’d like to, of course. It’s all very straightforward, Iseult. Nothing you can’t handle. Aside from learning the catalog software, I don’t foresee you having any trouble adjusting.”
Iseult nodded, but Evrane’s words slid off her like oil to water. She would be working with the public - and not just people. Children. That thought alone was enough to send her running.
But Evrane believed in her. She wanted her to take the job. She’d held off interviewing more qualified and worthy candidates for her. And instead of feeling flattered, Iseult couldn’t let go of the churning dread threatening to capsize her composure.
Evrane had said it would be temporary… then why did accepting her offer feel so monumental? Iseult wasn’t even supposed to be here. She was supposed to be at school. Studying, working towards - something. Accepting Evrane’s offer felt like taking another step away from that life. Her old life. Hell-gates, what was she even doing here? Sipping tea and eating biscuits? She was wasting time that could be spent working a third job, making money to send home to her mother, getting her life back on track. Getting herself back to where she was supposed to be. She needed to go. She needed to politely decline, rethink her priorities, and-
“Iseult?” prompted Evrane gently. “What do you think?”

The bell above the front-door to Mathew and Habim’s coffee shop jangled and a burst of warmth greeted Iseult as she stepped inside. Behind the wool scarf wrapped around her face, she sighed, relieved that the blistering cold and the 7 blocks standing between here and the library were behind her. She could already feel herself beginning to thaw.
Jitters was as it always was, looking more like an overgrown living room than a coffee shop. Mismatched furniture sprawled out over worn rugs of clashing patterns and on the walls hung tapestries and artwork with no real cohesion to them. A fire crackled in the brick hearth, where several customers were huddled around on a lumpy, velvet sofa and shabby armchairs. Nondescript instrumental music wafted from an ancient radio behind the counter - soft enough to not intrude on customers’ conversations, but loud enough to hug the shop in perpetual state of homeiness.
Iseult loved the dingey hole in the wall shop for all that it was, and even though it wasn’t hers, it felt like hers - hers and Safi’s. Since branching out and opening several more shops throughout the Witchlands, the owners Mathew and Habim now only popped in from time to time, and in the last few visits it had been obvious that they were more interested in seeing her and their goddaughter, not the shop. Their baby was in capable hands, they’d told them. It also helped that they now had an actual baby to take care of.
“You can’t hide from me, Iz. I’d know that pink nose anywhere.”
Safi stood behind the coffee counter wearing the mossy green apron all Mathew and Habim’s employees wore. Iseult pulled off her hat, hair slightly askew, and tugged down the scarf obscuring half of her face. “You found me.”
The smell of nutmeg and roasted coffee grains immediately filled Iseult’s nose. Wiping her boots on the doormat, she shuffled across the shop’s creaky floorboards and joined Safi behind the counter. She shrugged off her backpack and started the arduous process of unraveling herself.
“How was work?” Safi asked, extending an apron to Iseult and waiting patiently for her to finish unbuttoning.
“Apocalyptic,” replied Iseult, trading Safi and pulling the apron over her head.
“Really?” Safi walked around the corner and disappeared into the back office with Iseult’s coat and scarf draped over her arm. “Should I bother putting on another pot of coffee or is the end near enough that we can ditch these aprons and achieve our life’s ambition?”
Iseult tilted her head to the side. “Break into Mathew’s safe and find out the secret ingredient to his pumpkin cookies?”
Safi reappeared in the doorway with a scandalized look. “Raid Henrick’s office and burn it to the ground.”
“Ah right.” Iseult sighed glumly, pulling the apron tight around her waist and tying it off. “No, you should make the coffee. I suppose people will want it regardless of whether or not my life is going up in flames.”
Safi shot her a curious look as she took her advice and started bustling around the back counter. “That’s… dramatic. Can I help you put out the flames? Coffee isn’t flammable, you know.”
Iseult fiddled with the strings of her apron, untying them only to retie them again. On some level, she knew that she was being, as Safi put it, dramatic. The dread she’d left Evrane’s office with was unnecessary baggage. Dead weight, her mother would have called it. Stasis had done nothing to discourage the rapid fire in her chest every time she thought of what tomorrow would bring. Nor had reciting her multiplication tables - a method Iseult had used as a child whenever she was on the verge of tears and Gretchya would scold her. She only resorted to her times tables in the most dire of situations. Graduating to division, if Gretchya was involved. But her anxiety only seemed to derive greater power from her desperate attempts to silence it. She should just keep it to herself. It’s what Gretchya would tell her to do.
“Evrane wants me to work in the Children’s Room.”
Safi’s eyebrows bounced in mild surprise. “So?”
Iseult shook her head. An impatient jerk. “So?” she repeated, incredulous. “So I’m terrible with children and should in no way be left alone with them. I don’t know the first thing about taking care of them.”
“Taking care of them?” Safi laughed. “You’re helping them find books, not saving up for their college tuition.”
“You know what I mean. I don’t know a thing about them.”
“You know what they read. I think that’ll come in handy, don’t you?”
Iseult took a deep breath and for a third time tugged her apron loose. There were times she relied on Safi’s quick wit. Like when aggressive men painted her with platitudes and unwanted attention. And then there were times she envied it.
Iseult often wondered what that would be like to laugh in the face of fear. To not only be able to shrug off life’s worries with a wink and a smile, but to pull up a chair and sit with it in comfortable silence. Her best friend had grown up with an alcoholic uncle, and though he hadn’t been cruel to her, Safi had weathered his debauchery, riding scandal after scandal with little help from anyone. She’d mastered the art of not giving a fuck, suffering much worse than Iseult ever had - so why couldn’t she?
Safi set down the bag of coffee grains and turned to face Iseult. “Do you want me to bail on my 4PM?” she offered. Concern laced her words. “The world may not be ending, but we could still do some damage.”
“If you’re going to give in to your urges to skip class this early into the semester, you’ll be graduating after me.”
“And yet here I am offering,” Safi countered, bracing her hands on the counter behind her and leaning back. “It won’t kill Polly to take notes for once.”
Iseult gave her a look. “Oh, so you two are talking again?”
“I don’t know.” Safi raised an eyebrow, the corner of her mouth twitching. “Are you?”
Right. Safi was still on that. The impromptu fireworks show her and the Nubrevnan had put on for everyone at the Cleaved Man may have been a spectacular performance, but it hadn’t been enough to make Safi forget about the drink Leopold had sent her. Iseult certainly hadn’t forgotten about it. It had been on her mind all weekend. She supposed she should give him a call. He was probably waiting to hear from her. A ‘thank you’, at the very least. And yet, three days had gone by, and Iseult had done nothing more than take out her phone a dozen or so times, open a new message, and then promptly tuck it back into her pocket.
Iseult turned to the clock mounted on the wall. “Oh, would you look at the time,” she deadpanned. “You’ll be late for class if you don’t get going.”
Safi blinked back at her unimpressed and gave the clock a disinterested glance. A split second later, she did a double take. Her eyes widened. “Weasel’s piss!” she hissed, clawing at the apron strings tied behind her back. “You aren’t kidding!” She swept past Iseult and flew through the tapestry leading to the back.
Iseult listened to Safi’s hurried footsteps climbing up the narrow spiral set of stairs that led to their attic apartment and the muffled string of curses she left in her wake. There was the unmistakable thud of the apartment door slamming shut, shortly followed by creaking floorboards and frantic shuffled footsteps overhead that, if Iseult hadn’t known better, sounded like they belonged to a small herd of elephants. A couple customers seated nearby perked up from their coffee and eyed the ceiling warily. Iseult smiled apologetically and quickly ducked down behind the counter to pick up Safi’s discarded apron.
The bell above the front door rang, announcing a customer had entered - or perhaps leaving because of Safi’s stampede. Iseult pushed up from the ground, knees cracking, apron clutched in her hand, and she was about to offer the usual “What can I get for you today?” when she saw who was at the counter and froze. “Ryber?”
One of the two girls standing in front of Iseult broke off the conversation she’d been having with her companion to look at her. Upon seeing her, the girl’s eyes sparked with recognition.
“Iseult!” she gasped happily. “I didn’t know you worked here!”
Iseult nodded, taking in Ryber’s broad smile and releasing a relieved breath. For a painstaking moment, she’d wondered if her former chemistry lab partner from last year would recognize her.
“I work and live here.” Iseult gestured to the ceiling. “My best friend and I live in the apartment above this place.”
Both Ryber and her companion’s eyes widened in fascination. “That’s so cool!” Ryber exclaimed. She swept a hand to the pastry display to Iseult’s right. “Cookies whenever you want! Never going without coffee on those nights when you’re up late cramming!”
“It has its perks,” Iseult agreed, ignoring Ryber’s assumption that she still had a reason to be up late studying.
“I wish we had a place of our own,” Ryber continued. “Tanzi and I still live in the dorms. We - oh, sorry Tanz!” She turned to her friend who had been hovering on the edge of their conversation in polite silence. She gave her an apologetic look. “Tanzi, this Iseult det Midenzi. We were lab partners last year. We almost didn’t make it out alive. And Iseult, this is my friend Tanzi Laminaya.”
“Best friend,” Tanzi corrected, poking Ryber in the ribs. Ryber nodded sagely, despite waving her off.
“Yes, best friend. My sincerest apologies.” Ryber shook her head and grinned at Iseult. “We’re living in Paladin’s Hall this year.”
“Nice,” Iseult said. “I’ve heard that’s the best dorm.”
“And the spookiest!” Tanzi chimed in.
Ryber moaned. “Don’t start with this.”
“It’s ok. I’ve heard the stories too,” Iseult intervened, giving Tanzi a friendly smile, who beamed smugly and tried to catch Ryber’s eye. Ryber ignored her. “The library that I work at is supposedly haunted too.”
“Our library is haunted too?” Tanzi all but squealed.
Iseult’s stomach twisted. Navigating these conversations was never not tiring. “No, not the school library. The Venaza City Public Library.”
Both Ryber and Tanzi nodded in understanding. “Wow, you make coffee, work at the library, and you go to school,” Ryber listed off, looking across the counter at Iseult like she were some sort of deity. “I have a hard enough time juggling two majors - nevermind two jobs.”
“Well,” Iseult began, but just at that moment, the sound of a baby elephant tumbling down the stairs came rumbling from behind the hanging tapestry and Safi stumbled out into the shop. Her knitted beanie slipped haphazardly from her head as she righted herself and stepped behind the counter.
“Safi,” Iseult breathed. The relief in her voice was painfully noticeable, but she was too happy to be saved from explaining to Ryber that she had dropped out of school to care. She swung her arm out and redirected Safi, who had no doubtedly been en route to grab a frosted donut and a cup of coffee. Safi gave her a bemused look as her hand pushed into her back, but went with it with nonetheless.
“Safi,” Iseult said again, introducing her, “This is Ryber and Tanzi. Ryber and I were lab partners last year in chem.”
Safi perked up. “Oh! The Bunsen burner malfunction of ‘19! I’m glad to see you still have all your hair.”
“Thanks,” Ryber laughed, fingering her long threaded braids. “I’d probably be bald if it weren’t for Iseult. And trying to resuscitate my GPA.” She shrugged sheepishly. “Science isn’t really my thing.”
Safi waved her off. “Leave the sciencing to the scientists. That’s what I always say.” It was dumb, but Ryber and Tanzi both laughed. “You two look like you’re heading back to campus,” Safi said, taking in their backpacks and the layer of snow covering them both. “Do you need a ride?”
“Seriously?” Ryber asked. Her and Tanzi exchanged hopeful looks. Their dark skin was pink with cold.
“Of course. Though, my Lebaron is older than I am, so there’s a 60/40 chance we may not make it.
“I’ll take that chance!” Tanzi said with gusto, looking to Ryber for confirmation, who nodded without reserve.
“Me too!”
“As long as you know what you’re getting into. But first I need coffee. And sugar. And maybe something salty. You guys want anything?”
Ryber craned her neck around Tanzi and examined the pastry display case. “Can we get three hot chocolates, a lemon poppyseed muffin, and two chocolate croissants?”
“And a fudge brownie?” Tanzi added.
“A wise choice,” Safi commented. “I’ll get working on those hot chocolates. Iseult, can you take care of the pastries?” Before turning around, Safi shot Iseult a sideways grin. Iseult felt her insides melt in appreciation.
Iseult reached for a paper bag and sidestepped over to the pastry display case. Ryber followed her along the opposite side.
“You said you work at the Venaza City Public Library, right?”
“Uh-huh.” Iseult said, reaching for the biggest fudge brownie on the platter.
“Sooo,” Ryber drew out. “I know you’re not working right now. Well, you’re working - here, not there - but I was wondering if I could ask you a favor.”
Iseult stood up straight and met Ryber’s hopeful expression over the glass case. “Uh, sure. If I can help, I’ll try.”
“I’m looking for a book for my book club and I need to get a hold of multiple copies so everyone can read it. Otherwise, we’ll all have to share and instead of meeting every month, we’ll be meeting every ten years. The school library won’t let me put in a request for that many of the same book-”
“Can you believe that?” Tanzi interjected disapprovingly.
“-and I was wondering if I could put in a request at your library. Do they do that?”
For the second time since Ryber had walked in, Iseult felt relieved. Ryber was asking her something completely unrelated to school - and she could actually help her.
“Of course,” she answered. “We do that all the time. If you give me the titles, I can put in the request tomorrow when I’m at work. It usually takes about a week for the books to come in, depending on where they’re coming from.”
Ryber and Tanzi exchanged grateful looks. “Bless you!” Ryber praised her as she unzipped her bag, pulled out a notebook, and ripped out a piece of paper. “It’s just one book,” she said scribbling the title down. “But if I think of anything else, I know where to find you.”
“Great,” Iseult said as she traded Ryber for the scrap piece of paper and handed her the bag of pastries. She folded it into a neat square and tucked it into her pocket. “I’ll make sure to do it first thing tomorrow. When you come to pick them up, I can get you set up with your own library card.”
“Thanks, really,” Ryber said. “You know, if you’re interested you should join us. We try to meet every month, but it usually turns into every other month given everyone’s schedules. You know, it being junior year and all.”
“Right.” Iseult nodded uneasy. Ryber breezed on.
“Our dorm room is obviously too small for a group of people, let alone just us two, so we gather off-campus at my boyfriend’s place.”
“Boyfriend, huh?” Safi appeared holding a cardboard tray stacked with three hot chocolates. Whipped cream peeked out of the sippy hole of each lid. “I wonder what that’s like.”
“It’s not as glamorous as it sounds,” Ryber assured her.
“Oh stop being modest,” Tanzi sniped, poking Ryber in the ribs again. This must have been a thing she did regularly because Ryber barely flinched. “They’re crazy about each other.”
“Tanzi,” warned Ryber, but her friend ignored her.
“They’ve been inseparable ever since they met at Freshmen orientation. Well, all the times when she’s not with me, they are.”
“That’s your right as her best friend,” said Safi seriously. “I assume that’s who the third hot chocolate is for?”
“Of course,” Tanzi confirmed proudly, as though this were her boyfriend she was bragging about. It had to be a testament of how much she approved of him. Iseult could only wish the same on her and Safi when the time came and Safi brought a boy home. Iseult couldn’t fathom a universe where the roles would be reversed. “We’re off to wait outside his class and surprise him with sweets. Ryber likes to carry his books for him. He does the same for her all the time. No matter what, if he doesn’t have class, he’s there waiting for her.”
“Tanzi!” Pink dusted Ryber’s cheeks, embarrassed, but Iseult couldn’t miss the pleased smile she was fighting to hold back. Tanzi shook her head.
“Last year he waited two hours outside Noden’s Hall during a blizzard waiting for her philosophy class to get out, only to find out that the class had been cancelled because of the weather.”
Safi ‘aw’d and gazed wistfully at Ryber. Iseult couldn’t help but notice the way her eyes brightened. It wasn’t the first time she’d seen this shade of blue. It notably made appearances while they watched Pride and Prejudice like it was the first time and not the hundreth. For all her slandering of Caden and the race of men, the softness in her expression confirmed what Iseult already knew, but Safi would never admit to: she was a romantic at heart.
“He’s perfect in every way,” Tanzi boasted. “Well, except for one notable exception.”
And just like that, Safi’s harlequin moment evaporated. She leaned in greedily. “Oh what?”
“His best friend.”
Ryber whacked Tanzi’s arm, but Safi gasped, a little too gleeful in Iseult’s opinion. “Is he awful?”
“No,” Ryber said firmly at the same time as Tanzi groaned, “The worst.”
Safi shook her head and turned to Iseult. “That’s a pretty high offense, wouldn’t you say?”
Iseult nodded. She couldn’t imagine what it would be like if her boyfriend didn’t like Safi. Not that she was in any position to have a boyfriend, of course. But in a theoretical scenario, what would she do? Could she really love someone who didn’t love her best friend as much as she did? Assuming that she was capable of falling in love with someone in the first place, could she do that? Or what if Safi didn’t like her boyfriend? Would she break up with him? Even if she loved him?
Iseult bit the inside of her cheek. Apparently there would be no stasis today. Here she was working herself up over a fictional boyfriend in a fictional scenario that would never happen. She’d never even been kissed before. The man of her dreams wasn’t about to materialize out of thin air. She wasn’t even sure what he would look like...
“He’s not awful. He’s just…” Ryber trailed off, grasped for the right word. “Intense.”
Safi gave her a doubtful look. “So, he’s awful.”
Ryber burst with an exasperated laugh. “No, no, he’s a good guy. Really. He just has a lot to deal with. He has issues with his dad-”
“Daddy issues,” Safi mused in a mock tone. “Who doesn’t love that?”
“And he has a bad relationship with his sister-”
“Women troubles. Even better.”
“He pours his heart and soul into helping people, without ever asking for anything in return, even if he is a little intense about it. And, well... Kullen wouldn’t be friends with him if he wasn’t a good person. Because Kullen is a good person - the best, if you want my opinion. So, I trust his judgment.”
Ryber fell silent and her mouth quirked to the side, suddenly looking shy. She possibly hadn’t meant to be so honest to a complete stranger. To break the moment, she fumbled with her backpack and dug out her wallet. “How much do we owe you?”
Safi put up a hand and shook her head. “It’s on the house.”
Ryber broke out into a smile, eyes bright and free of embarrassment. Safi handed her the tray of drinks and hefted her backpack onto her shoulders. She turned to Iseult. “See you when I get home?”
“Always.”
Safi nodded. Something had crossed over her during Ryber’s speech, but Iseult wasn’t sure what. It wasn’t the same bright-eyed, fanciful look from before, but it was something. Iseult knew that much. She wanted to ask Safi what she was thinking, but before she could ask further, Safi was following Tanzi and Ryber to the front door. As they exited, they waved goodbye to Iseult.
“Think about book club!” Ryber called over her shoulder.
Iseult nodded her promise that she would, sensing, as the door jingled shut, that Ryber had given her more to think about than she knew.
* . * . * . * .
The next day found Iseult sitting alone at the desk in the Children’s Room waiting in tortured silence for her first patron to walk in.
The morning had started well enough. Hilga, the head librarian in the Children’s Department, had given her a tour of the room, as well as an overview of the software they used to catalog and circulate books. If Hilga disapproved of Evrane’s appointment of Iseult, she didn’t show it. On the contrary, she seemed ready to sob with relief when she tentatively asked Iseult if she would be able to manage without her for a bit if she spent some time in the back office to catch up on her book ordering. When Iseult said yes, she bustled around, thanking her profusely and set a tin of cookies by her computer, insisting that she help herself, before hurrying off.
There was only so much Iseult could do so early in the morning and with no one to assist, even less. She familiarized herself with the area behind the desk. Where to find library cards, important forms, museum passes, the stash of good pens. She tried her hand at the computer and managed to successfully put in the request for Ryber’s books as promised without bothering Hilga for help. And after taking a slower, more thorough tour through the room’s collection of books, she officially had nothing to busy herself with.
An hour later and not even the rumored ghost had made an appearance.
Iseult knew from her visits with the book cart that mornings were typically quiet if there wasn’t a program, and blessedly, there wasn’t. But that didn’t stop her from imagining the hundred or so catastrophes bound to disrupt her morning. She sat very still in her desk chair, hands clasped in her lap, listening intently to the silence, occasionally hearing Hilga’s unintelligible muttering from her office. A latte stood by the open tin of cookies, both untouched. Her insides were too wound up to eat or drink anything. Iseult didn’t need coffee; she needed Safi.
Moving for the first time in an hour, Iseult looked helplessly around the empty room and pulled her phone out of her skirt pocket. She cradled it in her lap, keeping it hidden behind the desk and began typing furiously. Safi’s second wave of morning commuters at the shop was probably settling by now, if she could just reach her-
Iseult’s fingers froze on her phone screen. A soft rustle of paper fluttered from somewhere in the room.
Heart stuttering, slowly, Iseult lifted her head. A flash of blue caught her eye from across the room.
It was the man with the opal earring.
And he was alone.
