If the wolves didn't stop him, these gates wouldn't either. Evan hesitated, then jumped. A miracle landed him safely, and he was the miracle that would save Maddie.

Eerily, the castle opened onto a dark, abandoned hall. He screamed, "Maddie!" then followed her voice. Torches ignited as Evan entered a dungeon with one prisoner: his sister.

He extended his torch into the shadows and found her jailer: a giant beast.

"Evan, leave me!" 

Evan's wild eyes met the beast's ferocious ones. "My life for hers."

"She is my prisoner."

"My life for hers."

"It is done."

Evan was shoved to the floor. His light went out as Maddie was dragged away. Maddie was free, and he was alone.
