9k FOLLOWERS CELEBRATION: GIF TUTORIAL by winston-wilson

In this tutorial, I’ll try to show you the basics of making a gif. Of course, there are many ways for this joyful and absolutely not stressful part-time hobby slash addiction, but this is how I’ve been doing it for a couple of months now, and it’s worked out pretty well so far. I’ve learned a couple of tricks, created my own shortcuts, and at this point it’s just something that comes naturally.

I use Photoshop CS5 Portable (you can get it here)

for taking caps, I’m using KMPLayer (get the 4.2.2.22 verison, the .23 one is screwed up - you can get it here)

1. Don’t beat your laptop with a baseball bat. Yet. Use your chair.

1.1. Videos/clips/movies.

I explained that part in this tutorial. What I want to add is that if you want the highest quality of a trailer, get QuickTime, wait a day or two after it comes out, and get the trailer here.

Find a trailer you��re interested in, play it, choose the highest quality option, press ctrl+shift+i, and you’ll get this:

Click anywhere on that html codes and press ctrl+f. This will show up:

Put that brandy away. Search for ‘source’, find this:

Clink on the blue link using the right-click of your mouse, choose open in new tab, and a download window should show up.

Save the video where you want to.

You can use videos from YT or movies you have on your computer or get those movies. Those movies also should be in the best quality possible. I suggest the ones with quality of 1080p and bit rate at least 6 Mb/s for best gifs.

In this tutorial I’ll be using the trailer of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Because all my movies are on another disk and I, uh...

2. KMPlayer + taking caps.

Before you open a video and take caps, I suggest you create a folder that’s easy to find and use on your desktop. I have one called ‘CAPS’.

- Open your video in KMPlayer. Pause it because this version of KMPlayer stinks and you have to pause the clip in order to start taking caps. So pause it and press ctrl+g. When the caps window shows up, set it to those (red) options and choose your folder (yellow) where your caps will be stored. You have to choose that one thing every time you open that window. [Sorry for the language, but it doesn’t matter. Just choose them settings.)

- Play the video & make sure your caps window is somewhere on the side like this:

Find the part that you want to gif. You can pause before it, press start on the caps window and then play the video or just start taking caps while the video is playing. I’ll do it using the first way.

click ‘start’ on the caps:

and then play the video until I get the caps I want and click stop on the caps window first, the video second.

Close that thing if you have what you want.

- Open your CAPS folder.

Get rid off the caps you don’t need. They’re trash and should be treated as such.

If you’re giffing more than one scene, you can sort them caps to folders. I have 10 folders named from 1 to 10 where I sort mine. And because for now I’m making just one, I’ll move those caps to folder ‘1′ on my desktop.

Time to make a gif. You good out there? If the answer is no, take Vicodin. No worries, when you’re done learning the basics, you’ll make gifs with Britney Spears playing in the background. Now shhh, focus.

3. Photoshop, aka that scary part.

- When you install it, you’ll get a folder, and in that folder there’s the app.

- Open that thing (and maybe copy on your desktop).

What you need is the layers window, the actions window, the adjustments window, the characters window, the animation window, the paragraph window, the history window... It... It sounds horrifying, I know, but cool your pits. It’s just this:

If you’re not laughing, take another Vicodin. Use this if those windows aren’t on display automatically:

And sort them. Now, I use my own keyboard shortcut for gifs. I suggest you do the same. Trust me, you don’t want to do this:

every time you make a gif. As you can see, I use alt+ctrl+p. You can set your shortcuts using the ‘Edit’ window at the bottom of which you’ll find the ‘Keyboard Shortcuts’ thingy. Then it’s a bit of digging but it all makes sense, ok? Ok. Yeah, no, it’s a lot of digging but I believe in you.

So you load them files, and this shows up:

so choose your folder where your caps are, and click OK. Ta-dah:

- This is the ‘make gif’ part. Click this:

so you can get this

at the bottom. I have this whole process made into an action, and if you want it in an action too, at this point you should click this:

and choose ‘New Action’. Name it. Click record.

- Dimensions. Very important. Like, 10/10 important. Don’t cross the 3Mb size.

Fitting into the tungler dimensions means your gifs will be posted in the highest quality. This is a visual of those dimensions (depending on how many gifs per row):

If you don’t do that, your gifs will look like blurred filmography of Zack Snyder’s.

I’m gonna make a 253px gif so it won’t stretch in that post. Gifs over I think 268px stretch on normal posts as in posts and look ugly.

So that brings us to the next steps.

- Cutting, resizing. Easy. Don’t panic.

choose that tool:

set your... this:

(make sure it’s ‘cm’, otherwise you’re screwed) and crop, baby, crop. I suggest the biggest area you can, of course without the black parts.

Also, depending on gifs, the dimensions can be different. For my 540px gifs I use 5x2 or 2x1 or 16x9. For my 268px gifs I use 11x7, 11x8, 5x3, 1x1. For the 177/8/7px ones, I usually use 3x5 or something. Just make it look nice. Not too thin, not too high.

Ok, so I’m cropping.

And now resizing. Crtl+alt+i.

Make sure this thingy looks like that:

My width will be 253px, you make it 268, alright? Or something. Just don’t cross 540px. And put that beer away.

So I have this now:

Doesn’t look appealing, huh? Yeah.

Also click ctrl+’-’/’+’ to zoom in/out the gif.

- Sharpening.

Some people use actions, some do their own thing, I use an action. I’m lazy. And I don’t look forward to just... You know. Clicking a lot. So I use this action. Download it, make sure you like or rb that post, and upload the action using this:

Find your action. Load. Choose it, click play.

So this is how the gif looks without:

Magic, I know. Okay, you can have that beer. Or no, don’t mix alcohol with pills.

- Coloring.

This is the fun part. That’s where vodka comes in. The part with 390248 times you get frustrated and your laptop is in danger because it can never know when it will join the doves behind your window in a short fly. Anyhoo.

Start from brightness. This is one little trick I learned. You can use these options:

I start off with doing something else. I choose the first option, aka Brightness/Contrast, and when it appears on my layers window, I choose the ‘screen’ option.

So I’ve gone from this

It’s clean. It’s cute. Brightens the whole gif.

Of course, you can do it traditionally and/or adjust the opacity of that ‘screen’ layer. I think I’m gonna brighten it just a tiny bit more and add some contrast.

Now cooolors. I’ll make a standard gif, nothing crazy. You can go crazy if you want to, just don’t make someone’s skin orange. It just... doesn’t look good, kay?

Save your gif using this (once again you can see my shortcut)

and your settings should look like this:

Click save, name the gif, save it wherever you want. And it’s done.

As a bonus we’ll go through...

4. Text on gif.

I use Arial Rounded MT Bold. You can use Calibri, it’s the one I used to use.

Choose this:

Click on the gif. Write your text. It looks like crap.

No worries. Choose the text (ctrl+a). Choose your character window. And manipulate until you get the result you’re happy with. Change the size of the font, the distance between letters and paragraphs (and choose the paragraph window to make the text centered).

Doesn’t look nice, we want it nice and clean and all that jazz. So. Back to the layers window. Choose that text layer and find this button

and choose drop shadow. When a window pops up, choose those settings (those are the ones I use:)

Then go to Stroke on your left and set it like this:

And click ok, and that’s the result:

Tips:

- create shortcuts. saves time, - make gif actions. saves time, - make sure you use the tumblr dimensions, - don’t do orange faces, ok? - when setting the text on your gif, you can do this little trick so it’s in the center:

x if my gif is 253x wide, the center is in 126,5, I make it 126px.

(make sure to write that ‘px’). click twice on your text layer, and this is the middle of that layer:

while moving that layer you should be able to see that tiny square and it’s the center of your text. Set it on the guide and you’re done. It’s centered.

- use these

to cut your gif. - play with the opacity and layer settings. for example, if you use color selection or saturation, you can set the layer’s option to ‘color’ and have it 70% opacity. - you can save the text layer only and reuse it by using ctrl+shit+s and saving it as psd

and then just open it again anytime with ctrl+o and duplicate it to the gif. - have fun with it. don’t throw your laptop out of your balcony, they’re expensive.

Pop Culture Conventions are still pretty new to me. In my 4 years as a published author I’ve been to exactly 4 of them, though technically you could say that I’ve been to the same one four times because I’ve only ever tried representing myself at the Sugar City Con right here in Mackay.

My first convention was all about having fun and learning 🙂

Obviously I’d love to go to an actual writing convention because I’d be more likely to find my target audience, but the SCC is still a very new thing here in Mackay and I am still very much an ingenue when it comes to the publishing world, so this is definitely one of those “Think globally, act locally,” events for me.

I’m glad to say that I’ve been with the SCC since their inception back in 2014, and I am very thrilled to say that I’ve learned a lot in those four years- perhaps even enough to warrant me passing my advice along becuase I myself have been frustrated when it comes to researching how best to navigate these events, especially as an author.

My first ever Convention set-up. Not very attention grabbing, is it? It looks like the booth of a beauty sales consultant.

The start of my convention evolution was a little bit embarrassing. I’d only been self-published for just over a year and all I had to offer potential readers was links to e-books and some brochures, which I tried hawking over a plastic-coated foldable table. I managed to raffle off a Kindle E-Reader that first year which at least gave some people a reason to come hang near my booth and jot down their e-mail addresses for me, but I’m not very good with being the pushy sales chick and I never actually used those e-mail addresses for anything so in the end, the most I got out of that event was a teeny tiny bit of promotion.

My second year was a little bit better. By then I had one book in paperback and I ordered in a lot of copies, in addition to getting business cards and better brochures, and I went to a lot more trouble with my booth. I made fancy decorations out of old books, had posters printed up to blow up my various book covers so that they could be pinned to my backing panel behind me, and actually took along my computer so I’d have something to do other than sit and stare at the people passing me by. That was a much better year, but the entire event was a lot bigger and better in general so it was pretty hard to steal attention away from the other vendors. I sold a lot of copies of my novels, but I chose my solitary YA title to print (because it was the smallest) and that definitely limited my reach because I am first and foremost an adult paranormal fantasy writer. I also printed out lots of samples of my other books and had a demo of a second novel ready to place orders for, which did generate a lot of sales. I was learning but I was learning too slowly and I knew that I needed to plan well in advance the following year if I was going to have a hope of getting my name and my work truly out there.

Next came 2016, which was definitely my best year. The convention had grown into its larger venue and the crowd was twice the size of the year before thanks to the fact that we had some fantastically talented people front up for the SCC, including a well-known actor and an incredibly talented young writer, Will Kostakis. I was asked to appear on a panel that year, along with Will Kostakis and another local author, Sharon Johnston to talk about how we got into writing- Will being the award-winner, Sharon the one that had official representation and me- the poor man’s Indie. That was lot of fun and a great experience, and although I don’t know if that got a lot more people heading my way, it certainly attracted the attention of one or two. I was much better prepared that year- I’d just produced my first original play so I spliced footage from that with my book trailers and played it on repeat on my computer so I had better visual aids, and by then I had 4 different paperbacks to sell and I happily almost sold out. I’d upgraded my brochures yet again, added in some book marks and printed out 18 posters while running a free promotion for several of my other novels on Kindle at the same time, so if there was anything that anyone wanted to read, they had the option of buying it then and there in paperback, or downloading it free.

Yes 2016 was definitly a successful year but like I said, the SCC was growing so by then there were 6 other writers present, so it was a good thing that I’d gone in prepared because it was much harder to stand out in that sea of faces.

I’ve just done my 4th SCC and although it probably should have been my best year yet, I found that it was pretty hard to top 2016. Not only because an economic downturn led to the event being down-sized in general, but because I didn’t actually make the decision to attend until 2 weeks before so I was grossly underprepared. I ended up having to order books at the last minute in bulk from Create Space which means the postage for each book cost as much as the titles themselves (and literally arrived the afternoon beforehand!), and I didn’t think of anything new to do with my booth so it was a lot simpler than it had been before. In fact, the highlight of this event for me was the fact that I finally got into the Cosplay spirit!

There were no other authors this year, but I didn’t rate that as being an advantage because it meant that the people that came were mostly drawn in by all of the sci-fi and cosplay stuff. I sold quite a lot of books still and managed to generate some great publicity for my upcoming shows and a collection of local ghost stories that I’m writing, but I definitely wish that I’d been better prepared and had had something new to offer people. That’s definitely the issue with being a small-town writer; if you don’t keep evolving, you go stale.

So here are my personal tips and tricks for representing yourself as an author at a convention- especially if you’re not attending an author-only convention and are competing with the special guest artists and cosplayers that the atendees are lining up for:

Go to some effort with your booth. You’ll likely be supplied with one table, one chair and a backing panel just like everyone else, so be prepared to make it all it can be. Table covers, covers for backing panels, posters, props- make the space look eye-catching. Please try to theme it or keep the colours simple though, because people do judge books- and authors- by their covers.

Find out if you have power and use it accordingly. I definitely wish I’d upgraded my PC display this year because I’ve found that it gives potential customers the chance to drift your way without being forced to have to look or speak to you if they don’t want to. All of the vendors are selling something and selling hard, and most atendees will do their best to maintain a safe distance between themselves and the desperate sales person eyeballing them until they’re as interested as you’d like them to be. A lot of people would advise you to call out to each one or do the ‘hard sell’ but I wouldn’t recommend it. When it comes to books someone is either a reader or they’re not, and readers know what they like to read. If your cover doesn’t hook them, then trying to talk them into it will scare them off more quickly. In fact whenever anyone drifts my way and starts eyeing my book covers I always test the waters first by saying: ‘Are you a reader?’ If the answer is no, then I know to tread carefully and offer them a pretty book mark. If the answer is yes, I ask them what genre they like. If it’s not something I write, I’ll talk to them about what they’re interested in instead and let them decide if they want to know more about me. Once again, I’m not going to waste my time or anyone else’s trying to convince a hard-core fantasy reader to buy a book about zombies.

Keep yourself occupied without actually going too far and making yourself look unapproachable. I take notebooks to doodle in because I can get a lot done without shutting myself off or getting overly distracted by technology.

Have things to sell or give away- I cannot stress this enough. Running a bunch of free books on Kindle might seem like a great idea, but a lot of people won’t go to the trouble of looking you up once they get home if left to their own devices. And be prepared to sell too: have a lot of copies on hand, change, bags, bookmarks and I would highly reccommend that you have one of those personal eftpos machines or at least have your internet banking details, a means to connect to the internet and an invoice book on hand. This year the thing that handicapped me the most was the money thing: the venue had one ATM that died in the first hour, leaving people with only the cash they had and their ATM cards. I’d learned from 2015 to get a portable card reader so I had that as back up but unfortunately, the signal on my phone was too weak to hook the thing up with the app and so I lost a lot of sales that way, as did all of the vendors. Next year when I go back I’ll take a portable wi-fi device to be safe.

Have something to give away to keep you in people’s minds, but if you can’t afford to go big, don’t. Giving away a Kindle loaded with my books was a great idea, but that only really appealed to e-book readers and in a town like mine, that cuts out 70% of your potential customers. Giving away an iPad is expensive and not likely to pay off for you because everyone will enter into that, so you could waste your time trying to hook the attention of people that want the iPad so they can use Instagram, not so they can read off it. If money is no option then by all mens, raffle off an elephant if you’re so inclined, but I’ve discovered that personalised bookmarks are the best way to go. They’re cheap, they’re relevant to the sutomers you want to make a connection with and a lot less likely to be thrown out than a glossy brochure will be.

Link your social media to your event- run competitions using your pen name as a hashtag and get yourself some authentic likes. This year I did a few things- I used my booth to take ticket bookings for my next play, offered a special discount off my next book for people that pre-ordered it before midnight, and tied my appearance at the Con to a cover reveal for my next book online. Just be careful to walk that fine line between self-promotion and spamming, whatever you do.

And last but not least, get into the spirit of things! Pop culture conventions are all about the cosplay, so find something to wear that’ll make it clear that you’re there not only as a vendor but as a fan of the experience in general. I’ve heard some authors say that they rate dressing up as a character from their own books, but mine aren’t really distinctive enough for that yet, so I decided to dress as Ariel, given that I have three books out about mermaids. It meant that I had to get up a lot earlier and was a lot less comfortable than I had been the prior years, but it was a lot of fun!

So here I am, hoping that 2018 is gonna be the year that I get it right, so if you have any tips for me, please share away!

To convention or not to convention? That is the question. Pop Culture Conventions are still pretty new to me. In my 4 years as a published author I've been to exactly 4 of them, though technically you could say that I've been to the same one four times because I've only ever tried representing myself at the Sugar City Con right here in Mackay.

As Long as You Love Me

This oneshot is 5358 words of pure love. I started this after my very first oneshot. I couldn’t figure out where I wanted to go with it. I love the Backstreet Boys and this song. I always thought it was perfect for Cory and Topanga and Rucas. I finally figured it out and I hope you enjoy.

As Long as You Love Me

It was Friday, two weeks before Homecoming at Abigail Adams High. Riley and her friends were so excited. They were sophomores now and had settled into the high school routine pretty well. They were all taking part in different clubs and activities and Homecoming was the highlight of football season. Homecoming was a time-honored tradition and Riley was eager to participate this year. Last year the triangle had just ended and they were all still adjusting to things.

Homecoming week was planned and each day would have a different theme. The gang probably wouldn’t participate in every activity but wanted to show their school spirit. Every day had a different theme with prizes going to the three people in each grade that best represented the day’s theme. All you had to do to participate was wear clothes from the different eras that were chosen for that day. Monday would be 60’s Day. Tuesday was 70’s Day. Wednesday was 80’s Day. Riley’s favorite day would be 90’s Day and Friday would be School Spirit Day. The whole week would end with a pep assembly and the football game on Friday night followed by the Homecoming Dance.

The gang had decided to meet at Topanga’s on a Saturday afternoon, two weeks before Homecoming, to talk about their ideas for the week. The kids all had various ideas for outfits from the different decades. Some of them would hit second hand stores or raid their parents or grandparent’s closets. Riley had found some 70’s and 80’s stuff in a nearby second hand store and she knew that her grandmother had some cool stuff in her attic from the 60’s. They would be in town to visit a week before homecoming and her grandmother promised to bring the items to Riley then. The only decade Riley knew she wouldn’t have any trouble with at all was the 90’s. Her parents were teenagers in the 90’s and she knew her mother’s sense of style and the fact that Topanga was a bit of a pack rat meant that her families storage space in the basement of the building would give her and Lucas an edge for 90’s day. The rest of the gang had raided their parent’s closets, but Riley was positive her or Lucas would take one of the prizes for 90’s Day.

After the gang left Topanga’s and Lucas had walked her home, she entered the apartment and went in search of her mother. Topanga was in Auggie’s room putting some laundry away. Riley knocked on Auggie’s door, making Topanga jump.

“Riley! You scared me to death!” Topanga yelled,

“I’m sorry, Mom,” Riley said in apology. “I have a favor I need to ask.”

“What kind of favor, Riley?” Topanga asked, curiosity getting the better of her.

“Well, as you know Homecoming week is coming up at school and me and my friends have been making plans for all the daily events. I need some ideas for 90’s day and I was wondering if I could get the key to our storage space so that I could look through some of your and daddy’s old clothes. I know you still have some of them.” Riley informed her mother.

“Oh, that sounds like fun! Do you want some help?” Topanga asked her.

“Of course, I would love your help. You know where all the good stuff is and it would save some time.” Riley was nearly jumping for joy at her mother’s offer to help.

“Auggie is with your father, so I’m free right now, if that works for you.” Topanga informed Riley.

“What are we waiting for then?” Riley asked. She grabbed her mother’s hand and headed down the hall to the living room. She was headed to the front door when Topanga stopped her.

“What?” Riley asked.

Topanga went to the kitchen and opened a drawer and pulled out a set of keys. “We need the key to get in the storage space,” she said as she held the key ring up and jingled it. Topanga walked back to Riley and grabbed her hand and they headed out the door. Instead of waiting for the elevator, they took the stairs to the basement.

Riley hated the basement. It was so dark and dusty. She knew spiders and other critters were lurking in the dark corners and shadows. She was really glad her mother came down here with her. “Where is our storage space, Mom?” She asked.

Topanga didn’t like the basement either. She thought it was creepy and kept turning on every light switch they saw. “It’s just up ahead, Riley.” They walked along until they got to the familiar cage with the number 26 on the door. Topanga fumbled through the keys until she found the one that would open the lock on the door. She slid the door open and laid the lock and keys on the floor just inside the door. She found the light switch and turned on the lights. When she saw how much stuff was sitting in the space she cringed. She and Cory really needed to purge themselves of some of this stuff. There were stacks and stacks of boxes, as well as some furniture items hidden under sheets and blankets. They only came down here twice a year. Once to get the Christmas decorations out and once to put them away. She knew where the items Riley was looking for were. They headed to the back of the space.

Riley couldn’t believe the amount of stuff that was in the storage space. It was all neatly stacked though. She followed her mother into the space and she immediately tripped over something that was sticking in the walk way. Thankfully her mother caught her so that she didn’t land on the floor. When she looked to see what she had tripped over she pulled back a blanket to reveal a wooden crib. “Mom, is this Auggie’s crib?” she asked her mother.

Topanga turned to look at what Riley was talking about. “Yea, that was Auggie’s crib, yours too. Grandma and Grandpa Matthew’s gave that crib to us before you were born. Who knows, maybe someday your and Auggie’s children will sleep in that crib.”

Riley rubbed her hand along the smooth surface of the wood. It was weird to think of the future. She wondered if her and Lucas would be together that long. She knew that she loved him. She just wished she had the nerve to tell him and just hoped he would feel the same way. Her mother called her name, pulling her out of her thoughts and back to the task at hand. She walked over to where her mother had found a seat on an old cooler. Riley found an old plastic milk crate that she turned upside down for herself to sit on.

Topanga had found the boxes that she believed Riley would need. “I think these boxes have some of my old clothes in them, maybe even some of your father’s things.” Topanga said.

Riley started rummaging through some of the boxes with her mom. She pulled out some short denim skirts she thought might work, then she found some dresses that looked a lot like some of the ones that she had, just different colors and prints. “Mom, this looks like some of my dresses that I have now.”

Topanga looked up from the box that she was looking at to see what Riley was talking about. “Oh, my goodness, that’s my skater dress. It does look just like some of yours. There is a denim vest and belt that I used to wear with that, somewhere.” Just as Topanga said it Riley found the vest and some clunky short leather boots as well.

“Mom, what are these?” Riley asked, holding up the boots.

“Those are my Doc Martens. I wore those with everything. Your father even had a pair, his were low tops, but he had some, as well.” Topanga said laughing. She turned and went back to the box she was looking in.

Riley kept looking through the box and when she came to the bottom of it she found some old CDs and an odd looking round thing with headphones attached. She took the stack of CD cases and started looking through them, there were names like Hanson, The Spice Girls, Jewel, Elton John, The Backstreet Boys, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. “Mom, I think I found your music from the 90’s” Riley said. “But what is this thing with the huge headphones attached to it?”

Topanga walked over to Riley and took the CD’s from her. “Oh, wow! You found some of my CDs and my Discman?” Topanga thought she had gotten rid of these things.

“Your who?” Riley asked with a confused look on her face.

“Discman. It’s a portable CD player and those headphones are how you listened to the music. You’ve seen headphones before.” Topanga explained. “I can’t believe these are here.”

“Mom, who are the Spice Girls and the Backstreet Boys?” Riley asked.

“Well, the spice girls were an English pop group that were super popular for a few years. They had this cool song called, Wannabe. The Backstreet Boys were an American boy band that first made it big in 1997. I may or may not have had a secret crush on one or two of them. I loved their music.” Topanga said, answering Riley’s question.

“I guess that means you thought some of them were really cute?” Riley asked.

“Yea, at the time. I was a 17-year-old girl and all teenage girls loved them. But, I still loved your dad.” she said.

They rummaged through a few more boxes and Riley was satisfied with what she found for her and Lucas. She hoped her dad’s Doc Martens would fit Lucas. She found a denim shirt for him and she settled on the skater dress with the denim vest and her mom’s Doc Martens. She found some hair scrunchies, that her mom said were all the rage in the 90’s. She also asked her mom if she could take the CDs to listen to as well. Her mom found an empty box to put all her things in and they turned off the lights and closed the door and left the basement.

When Riley returned to the apartment, she thanked her mother for helping her and went to her room. When she got to her room she placed the box on the floor by the bay window and took a seat. She had forgotten that she left her cell phone there and decided to check to see if Lucas had texted. She had a couple missed calls from Maya and a text from Lucas. She would call Maya later so, she opened the text from Lucas. Hey Riles you’ll never guess what I found in my dad’s closet. They’ll be really cool for 70’s Day. Call me when you get this... She dialed his number, eager to tell him about her own treasure hunt.

Hey, Babe. Tell me about this awesome find of yours that will make 70’s Day.

Well, I went through my dad’s closet and found a baby blue leisure suit and white platform shoes and a white belt. He says the suit was Pappy Joe’s, but I don’t believe him. The shoes were his though and it all fits. What about you? Did you have any luck with the 90’s stuff?

Oh yea. My mom took me down to our storage space. I found the coolest stuff. I even found some old CDs of my moms and this portable disc player called a Discman, it’s really strange. Why don’t you come over and you can try on these shoes that I found and we can listen to this music.

Bay window or front door?

My dad is out with Auggie so, bay window.

Okay, be there in an hour. See you then.

Riley walked over to the bay window and started pulling items out of the box. She was really interested in hearing those CDs, especially the Backstreet Boys. There were 4 or 5 of their CD’s so her mother must have really liked them. She turned on her laptop that was sitting in the window seat and inserted the disk into the drive and waited for it to play. It was the Backstreet Boys CD, Backstreet’s Back. Her mother had told her that was their first album. As the first song played she could see why her mom liked this music. She still listens to pop music all the time. Riley decided to let the music play while she was looking through the items she had collected for Homecoming week.

She was pretty happy with the items and was sure that she could win one of the prizes for 90’s Day. As the songs played, Riley kept sorting and putting items away. Just as she was sitting down back at her computer a song came on that she really liked. She looked at the CD case to see the name of the song, As Long as You Love Me. She turned the volume up and listened more intently. As the song was playing her mother came in her room and sat at the bay window with her, listening to the song.

As the song ended, Riley turned to her mother and noticed she had tears in her eyes. “Mom, are you okay?” Riley asked. She reached up and brushed the stray tear from Topanga’s cheek, “why are you crying?”

Topanga stood and walked over to Riley’s dresser and grabbed a tissue and wiped the unshed tears away. “That song was a favorite of mine and your father. It just reminds me of when we were young and so crazy in love.”

“It is a really good song, I like what it says.” Riley said softly. “Is this your and dad’s song?”

“It’s one of our songs, we have several. One night, we were doing homework for Feeny’s class, while listening to the radio and this song came on. Your father, being the romantic guy that he is, asked me to dance.” Topanga was reminiscing. “We were in your grandparent’s living room and we danced. It is one of my favorite memories and when I hear this song, it always takes me back.”

“Aww, mom, that’s so sweet. Who knew that my dad was such a sappy romantic at heart.” Riley said while giggling. “By the way, Lucas is going to be here in a little while. He’s using the bay window and yes, we’ll keep the door open.”

“Speaking of Lucas, I have a question for you, Riley.” Topanga asked, knowing how Riley felt about him. “Have you told Lucas how you feel about him yet? Have you told him that you love him or has he told you?”

Riley took a deep breath and answered her mother’s question, “No, I haven’t. What if he doesn’t feel the same way? I don’t want to scare him off.

“Oh sweetie, trust me, he feels the same way about you. I think he has for quite a while.” Topanga said, trying to ease her daughter’s mind. “So, neither one of you has said a word?”

Riley shook her head no and looked at her feet. Topanga put her hand under Riley’s chin and pulled her head back up, gently. “Riley, don’t be afraid of your feelings. It could turn out to be one of the best things you ever did. Whether you and Lucas are forever, or not, he deserves to know how you really feel. You deserve to know how he really feels.” Topanga pulled her daughter close to her and gave her a hug, which Riley returned.

“Thanks for the words of wisdom and the advice, mom. I love you.” Riley told her mother as she hugged her.

“Well, who knows, this could be a story you tell my grandchildren someday. Make sure you and Lucas have them call me Nana Topie.” Topanga said with a laugh as she let go of Riley.

Riley smiled at what her mother said. Whether those grandchildren belonged to her and Lucas or someone else, she knew that Nana Topie, would be one of the best grandmothers a kid could have.

“Riley, do you mind if I borrow that CD?” Topanga asked.

“It is your CD, so of course you can have it.” Riley removed the CD from her computer and handed it to her mother. Once Topanga left the room, Riley pulled up her Spotify account on her computer and added the song to her Lucas playlist. Anytime she heard a song that reminded her of him, she’d add it to this playlist.

She was laying on her bed listening to the song for the third time, when she heard a knock on the bay window. She rolled from her back to her stomach and looked to see Lucas’ smiling at her through the closed window. She had forgotten to unlock the window. She got up off the bed and went to the window to let Lucas in.

Lucas was surprised to find the bay window locked. Riley always unlocked it when she knew he was coming over. He looked inside the window and saw her laying on her back on her bed. He decided to knock on the window to get her attention. Once he had her attention and she unlocked the window, Lucas climbed in and as he stood, he was attacked by the beautiful brunette. She launched herself at him and as luck would have it he caught her, wrapping his arms around her waist. He took advantage of the situation and held on to her for a bit so he could hug her. Holding her always made his heart beat fast.

The girl in his arms was a wonder to him. She made everything better, she made him better. He couldn’t exactly put his finger on the moment it happened, but Lucas knew that he was head over heels in love with this girl. Of course, he hadn’t shared that little tidbit of information with Riley. He was afraid she wouldn’t feel the same and Lucas just didn’t know if he could handle that. He never wanted to lose her and wasn’t sure if they didn’t share the same feelings for each other if it would be so easy to go back to being her friend. They were friends, he considered Riley his best friend, different than Zay and Farkle. He just didn’t want to lose what they shared. He wouldn’t be the same without her in his life.

As he inhaled the sweet floral scent that seemed to surround her, he didn’t want to let go. But she was the first to break the silence.

“Lucas, is everything okay?” she asked as she loosened her hold on him.

The smile had disappeared from her face and he couldn’t have that, he never wanted to be the reason that she didn’t smile. “Everything is fine, Riley. I was just enjoying the moment.”

“Me too,” she said with a blush and the smile returning to her face. “I like all of our moments.”

“Well then, you should know the feeling is mutual.” Lucas said with a smile on his handsome face. So, where are these shoes you wanted me to try on?”

Riley walked over to the end of her bed where she had set her dad’s old Doc Marten’s. She picked up the clunky shoes and walked back to the bay window and gave them to Lucas. “Here you go, these were my dad’s back in the 90’s. If they fit you can use them for 90’s Day. Apparently, the look for part of the decade was denim on denim and whatever else you could pair it with.” Riley informed him. “I have a pair of boots just like them that were my mom’s. I also found one of his shirts and an old denim jacket that you can use. You’ll have to use your own jeans and gel your hair really well.”

“Gel, my hair?” Lucas asked.

“Yes, big hair was in and the dudes always gelled their hair for styling. So, yea, don’t worry, I have some you can use.” Riley said seriously.

“Okay, whatever my princess wants.” Lucas said with a smirk. He tried the shoes on and pulled the shirt on over his green t-shirt he was wearing.

After Lucas, had pulled the shirt on Riley checked out the look. Her dad’s shirt was a little snug across Lucas’s chest and on his arms, but she liked it. Topanga walked in just at that moment and noticed the denim shirt on Lucas.

“Whoa, is that Cory’s old shirt that you brought up from storage?” Topanga asked.

“Yea, what do you think?” Lucas asked her. Riley couldn’t take her eyes off him.

“Mr. Matthews never looked that good in it. He didn’t um… fill it out quite so well. Yea, anyway do you kids want something to eat and drink? I have some sandwiches and sodas I can bring you.” She told them.

Lucas was getting ready to pull the shirt off when a mesmerized Riley grabbed his arm to stop him, “leave it on, I like it,” she said with a goofy grin on her face. Lucas did as she asked.

Topanga still waiting for an answer could see shy Riley couldn’t tear her eyes away from Lucas in that shirt. She walked over to Riley and snapped her fingers in front of her face. Riley snapped out of her trance and just looked at her mother.

Lucas spoke up, “We would love the sandwiches and some sodas, Mrs. Matthews. Thank you.” Lucas just looked at Riley, wondering what was going on with her.

Riley was glad that her mother snapped her out of whatever it was that had come over her. She really didn’t expect Lucas to look so good in that shirt, it really wasn’t his style. Lucas generally made any clothing he wore look good though.

Lucas finally asked Riley if he could take the shirt off and she relented. He was still wearing the shoes, they were pretty comfy. He went to hang the shirt on a hanger to save it from wrinkling and realized that the same song had been playing since he got there.

“Riley what is this music you’re playing and why is it the same song?” it’s a good song but listening to it over and over is getting a little old.” He told her.

“Maybe if you would take the time to listen to the words, you’d like it. It’s from an old CD of my mom’s. It’s As Long as You Love Me by The Backstreet Boys. I found it on Spotify and downloaded it to my Lu… um, my playlist.” She nearly blurted out her secret. “I must have it on repeat. I’ll stop it.” She walked over to the bed and picked up her laptop to stop the song, she just Lucas wouldn’t look over her shoulder.

“What’s the name of that playlist, Riley?” Lucas asked, with a smirk. He could have sworn she was about to say Lucas playlist. “You don’t have to stop the song, I’d like to listen to it and hear the words like you said.”

She stopped what she was doing and put the laptop down. “The playlist really doesn’t have a name. It’s just a list of songs that I really like.” She got up off the bed and walked over to him. “Do the shoes fit okay? Do you want to see what I’m going to wear?”

“Yea, that would be awesome.” He answered. Lucas took the time while she was in the bathroom changing to listen to the words of the song. It was these words that struck him:

He wanted to replay that part, so he turned the computer around and backed the song up to the beginning. It was then that he noticed the title of the playlist, Loving Lucas. She had a playlist for him. He couldn’t believe it. He heard the bathroom door open in the hall, so he got up off the bed and went to the bay window. He didn’t want her to see him looking at the computer.

She walked into the room to see Lucas still sitting in the bay window and the song still playing in the background. “Well, this is it, what do you think?” she asked.

Lucas was at a loss for words, she was wearing a short dress that was yellow with white sleeves and a butterfly print all over it. She had a black belt at her waist and it was topped with a denim vest. Her hair was down and with half of it pulled into a ponytail on top of her head. On her feet were the same shoes as he was wearing only hers were boots. She was beautiful. He stood up and walked over to her and told her, “Riley, you look beautiful! The outfit looks great on you.”

Topanga picked that moment to show up with the sandwiches and drinks. She set the tray with their food down on Riley’s desk and walked over to the kids. She couldn’t believe her daughter was standing here in an old outfit of hers. “Riley, you look great, If I didn’t know better I would swear you walked right out of 1997. I don’t remember that dress being that short on me, but you were born taller than me so that’s to be expected.”

Riley and Lucas sat there staring at each other for a moment. “Well. I’m going to go put my other clothes back on. Be right back.” It was like she couldn’t get out of the room fast enough.

Lucas turned to thank Mrs. Matthews for the food. “Thanks for the sandwiches Mrs. Matthews. It’s really great of you to feed me.”

“Don’t be silly, Lucas. I’m happy to do it. Can I ask you a question?” Topanga asked. Someone had to get these two to open up about their feelings. They could talk for hours about anything and everything, except how they felt. Lucas shook his head yes so this was her shot. “When are you going to tell her how you feel? I know you want to?” Before he could answer her, she turned and left the room.

Lucas was left speechless. How could Riley’s mother possibly know what he was feeling. Riley walked back into the room and took the tray of food and sat on the floor. Lucas sat next to her and took the plate of food she offered. He hardly touched his food, while Riley inhaled hers.

“Lucas is something wrong?” she asked. “Is the sandwich not good?”

“No Riley, there is nothing wrong with the food. Why are you playing this song over and over? Have you listened to the words?” he asked.

“I’ll turn it off if it bothers you. I just thought it kind of described us.” Riley told him.

“Why because of my past? I don’t understand?” he asked. He needed to know if she felt the same as him.

“Did you not listen to the words? I don’t care what written in your history. I don’t care where you’re from or what you did, the only thing that matters is if you love me. I just want to know; do you love me Lucas?”

Lucas swallowed the lump that was in his throat. He was suddenly unable to speak. He picked up his soda and took a big drink. He stood up and walked to the foot of her bed. He turned around and squeaked out the only words he could think to say. “Riley, will you come over here and dance with me?”

She knew he was nervous, heck she was nervous. When he didn’t answer her question, she got a little more nervous. She stood and walked over to him. She put her arms around his neck and pulled him close. She felt him put his hands on her waist and pull her closer to him. He started swaying slowly to the music. Trying to figure out what to say she finally said, ”Lucas you have to know that the things that you did in your past don’t matter to me at all, I love the person you are now. I just need to know if you feel the same way.”

He couldn’t believe that she just said she loved the person that he was. Those words were meant everything and he had to say them to her as well. He loosened his hold on her so that he could see her face. “Did you just say that you loved me?”

She blushed a bit and looked down. He put two fingers under her chin and made her lift her head so that she was looking him in the eyes. She bit her bottom lip, “Yes, Lucas, I love you. I’m in love with you and I’ve been too afraid to say anything for fear of you not feeling the same way.”

He couldn’t help but smile at her. He wrapped his arms back around her waist pulling her back to him. “Silly girl, don’t you know I have loved you for so long now. I don’t know when it happened, it just did and I’ve been dying to tell you but was afraid. I’m in love with you, Riley Matthews and know that as long as we love each other, everything is going to be alright.”

She pulled him closer if possible. They were cheek to cheek and she whispered in his ear, “Why were we so afraid to tell each other? We talk about everything else so, why was this so hard?”

“I’m 17 and your 16. That’s why it was so hard. Feelings are still new to us and hard to share. But now that I’ve said it once I want everyone to know. I could yell it from the roof of this building!” He said.

“You would do it to, wouldn’t you? I think for the moment I just want to keep it between us, and my mom. She said something to you didn’t she?” She chuckled at the thought of her matchmaking mother.

“Yes, she did. But it’s okay. If I had known it would feel this wonderful I would have done it sooner.” He said. He pulled away just a little to look in her eyes. He leaned forward and closed the distance between them with a kiss.

Topanga was standing in the hall with a smile on her face when she heard the front door. She walked down the hall to the living room. Cory had just hung up his jacket when he turned to her and told her that Auggie was having a sleep over with Doy and that he was free for the evening. Topanga smiled and picked up a small remote control and clicked a button.

Cory wondered what his wife was up to. She had a beautiful smile on her face as she used the remote for the small stereo in their living room. When the music started playing, he smiled and a million memories of yesterday came to mind. “Oh, this is my cue. Would you like to dance with me Mrs. Matthews?” he asked.

She walked into his arms and said, “I’d love to Cory. I’m glad you remembered.”

“How could I ever forget this song and what it has meant to us over the years. I always knew that as long as we loved each other, everything would be okay.

Tips for Concerts

If you want to record, KNOW HOW TO USE YOUR CAMERA BEFORE YOU GET THERE! Make sure you practice zooming, making it focus, and shotting something far away. Trust me testing it up close isn’t the same, practice for worse case scenario. Also, bring a back up, usually a cell phone camera unless that’s already your primary.

Get there early especially if you VIP and are picky. Usually you buy VIP because you want to be up close and personal. Dont’ get robbed of that if weird things happen. Like say, you getting a blue wristband, instead of a purple one. So you’re not allowed certain places despite being VIP. Just get there early.

Be ready to change your hair, espcially if you’re a woman or have really long hair. Water spraying happend at EVERY concert, some more than others. If you’re up close enough you will be looking much different form how you did when u left home afterwards. Not to mention, if you get there early and wait for hours, humidity and/or rain do not want you to prosper. BRING A PONYTAIL HOLDER!. Don’t try to be all boujee. You ain’t too cute to throw that in a ponytail!

Make sure your phone is charged or bring a portable charger (obviously make sure the batteries in THAT are charged). If you’re recording that battery is gonna go quick especially it you wanna snapchat something every 5 seconds. You need a charge in case of an emergency or change of plans. This is something you should follow in every aspect of life especially if you are a woman.

Consider bringing an unused or empty memory card. Especially if you plan on taking pictures or videos. It’s all fun and games ntil you get that “not enough storage” message and have to scramble to figure out what you wanna delete.

Bring money. In case you want to buy a water or just a bag of candy. Maybe you might even wantto go see a movies or something afterwards. There might be a sick afterparty or something that you want to Uber to. You mgiht start drinking and need to call an Uber/taxi/take the bus whatever.

I wouldn’t recommend sleeping overnight? Like I feel like that’s extra. Just get there early, I think before noon is best. No need to sleep outside of a concert. Especially with kpop, they are probably coming back next year unless they are from YG. In that case, I don’t know. Do you because I don’t even wanna think about one of those lines right now.

Check the weather. This is obvious. Especially if you have to drive to another city, it’s just your luck (or maybe just mine) that it’s 70 degrees and sunny where you live and then foggy, rainy, and 45 degrees where the concert is on that day.

Be nice to the staff. A lot of them seem to be assholes for some reason. However, you don’t need a security guard to start acting petty and try to kick you out after all that money you spent. Just be quiet, move to another part of the venue, go buy a water just to take that walk and calm yourself down. Do whatever you have to do to not get in fights. Pick your battles. the staff is always gonna win no matter what, unless they did something EXTREMELY bad. Then report.

Be nice to the artist. Don’t go screaming out obscene things or even worse, WEARING them. Unless they are one of those types of artists who encourage that type of thing (there are some) but you know damn well who those artists are and who they aren’t.

Check the offcial page of the promoter and the actual event to make sure you catch all news as well as to talk with others who are going. A lot of concerts have events planned for before the concerts start by street teams, fanclubs, and other groups related to the artists. It could be fun to participate.

Listen to directions. If they ask to see you damn wristband 67 times just show it. This ties into the “be nice to the staff” entry. Just pick your battles. I guarantee you that 9/10 it’s not worth the fight.

Don’t wear those heels. And if you do, bring another pair of shoes. Like I said with the hair, don’t try to be boujee. You ain’t too cute to throw on some tennis shoes. Nobody can even see yo ass in that dark ass venue anyway. I promise you it’s more than likely going to waste. Unless, you in the club or something.

Buying the right stuff as a new parent is tough. Buying the right things for a new parent? Even harder.

There’s just way, way too much junk out there marketed at new parents. A lot of it seems useful until you realize it’s just taking up space.

As it turns out, Team TechCrunch had a lot of babies this year. Really — backstage at TechCrunch Disrupt SF was like a lil’ temporary nursery. I chatted with the new moms and dads of TechCrunch (past and present) to figure out the things that helped them the most in the early months.

We won’t get into things like carriers and car seats and strollers; those are pretty personal, and there’s no one-size-fits-all recommendation. Instead we focused on the things that surprised us with their usefulness. Some of them aren’t necessarily marketed toward parents, but make their lives easier. Some are things they didn’t think they’d need, but ended up using on the daily.

Here are some of the things that came up most:

Headrest mirror

Age range: until the baby is moved to a forward facing car seat

For the first stretch of a baby’s life, their carseat is supposed to face the rear of the car. That means, of course, that you can’t see your baby in the rearview. That’s no fun.

These plastic (so no glass shards if it somehow breaks) headrest mirrors bring the baby back into view. I thought it was just comforting to us, until we were traveling and using a rental car. Our baby, who always seems to love car rides, was suddenly upset any time we placed him in the rental. We eventually realized it’s because his friend — the baby in the mirror — was nowhere to be found. As soon as the mirror was back, he was happy again.

We use the Go by Goldbug ($12). It’s easy to install, adjust, and move from car to car, and it feels super secure once it’s in place.

Philips Hue Bulbs

Age range: All ages.

We’ve had Philips Hue bulbs in our house for a few years, but I honestly can’t believe how useful they’ve been since our baby arrived. Being able to turn on the light from your phone when the baby cries without going across the room to the switch? Magic. Being able to dim the light a bit with your voice (with the help of something like Google Home or an Amazon Echo) when your arms are occupied by an upset newborn? Sorcery.

A 2-bulb starter kit (including the required hub) goes for $70 on Amazon.

(There are lots of alternatives to Hue at this point, many of them cheaper. I like Hue because of the flexibility provided by the Hue line’s extensive options/accessories, because it works with Apple’s HomeKit and Google’s Home, and because the app is nice and stable.)

Portable/Moveable Philips Hue Switch

Age range: All ages.

If you get the bulbs above, grab one of these Philips Hue Tap switches ($44 on Amazon) too.

I’ve probably poked this goofy little hockey puck a thousand times in the past four months.

That example I used earlier with the light switch being on the other side of the room? That’s my life. This thing, however, lets me bring a light switch anywhere; in our case, my wife and I each have one stuck on our nightstand. It has four buttons, each of which can set a Hue light to a different preset (like bright/dim/even dimmer/off). It lets me turn the light to just the right level of brightness without waking anyone up, without looking for my phone, and without wandering across the room in the dark.

Oh, and the neatest part: it doesn’t need batteries. The action of pressing a button charges it up just enough to send the command to the Hue bulb.

Portable white noise machine

Age range: First year, at least.

White noise (think the sound of radio static) helps some babies fall asleep, and sleep more soundly.

There’s about a thousand options for bringing white noise on the go, but the Cloud b Sleep Sheep ($32) has become my go-to.

It turns off automatically after 45 minutes, has an adjustable volume level, has velcro tabs to hook it onto a stroller, and multiple melodies/sound options like ocean sounds and lullabies in case the white noise gets tiring. And when it’s not in use? It just looks like a cute stuffed animal, rather than a whacky techno doodad. It requires two AA batteries, so consider also buying them some rechargeables.

Google Home/Amazon Echo

Like the Hue Bulbs, usage of my Google Home ($100) has skyrocketed since our baby came along.

Got a baby on the edge of falling asleep? Hey Google, play rain noises.

Want to watch your shows but the baby is already nursing in your arms? Hey Google, play The Good Place on the upstairs TV.

Hey Google, add “freezable teethers” to my shopping list. Hey Google, play lullabies from Spotify. Hey Google, dim the lights.

(Amazon Echos are a totally solid alternative. I like Google Home because it plays friendly with Chromecast, but if the recipient is more a Fire TV fan, go with the Echo)

A (more secure!) baby monitor

Age range: Any age, but extra useful in the first year or two.

Baby monitors are great! Sometimes it feels like baby’s naps are the only times in which you can get anything done, but you still want to keep an eye on them.

Unfortunately, a lot of baby monitors are insecure junk (see Rapid7’s report on baby monitor security here) requiring anyone who might want to eavesdrop into your house to use only the most basic of tools (like, say, another baby monitor.)

One option is to use a Nest camera ($199) as a baby monitor — especially if the house already has Nest cams setup elsewhere. Built by Google and battle tested by countless security researchers, it’s pretty dang secure. It’s not built specifically to work as a baby monitor, but it’s nice that it can just be used as a security camera once it completes its baby monitor duties.

Want something a bit more baby-focused? A few TechCrunchers use Nanit. The base model ($229) does HD Audio/Video, IR-based night vision, plus some neat bonus tricks like sleep tracking and temperature/humidity sensing. A slightly more expensive Plus model ($279) brings in two-way audio, if that’s a thing you ant.

And, as a huge plus, the company is pretty open about their security practices and self-auditing efforts.

Instant Pot

Age range: Any

When baby comes, free time becomes a precious commodity. It becomes way easy to fall back to microwaveable meals or DoorDash every night. And hey, no judgement! If you’re finding time to eat most meals, you’re doing just fine.

But when you feel like making something for yourself but want it to be tasty and fast and relatively easy to cleanup, pressure cooking is a great option. InstantPot ($80 – $100, depending on the size) makes pressure cooking less daunting — prep ingredients, pop them in, close the lid, press a button.

Get’em a good pressure cooking recipe book too, while you’re at it.

Meal delivery Kits

Age range: Extra useful in the first few months, but ask ahead

See above. If finding time to cook is hard, finding time to shop might feel impossible.

Meal delivery kits like Blue Apron and Sunbasket (both of which I used, the latter of which I ended up preferring) bring the ingredients to you, taking the least fun step out of the cooking process. They’ve boiled the instructions down to just a page or so, with most of the meals taking about an hour to do right. One month of meal deliveries will cost around $200-$250, depending on which service you go with.

As for which service to go with: this is the kind of gift that you want to consult the gift recipient about before. There are all kinds of different options now, with services that tailor to everything from veggie to keto to gluten-free. Don’t go sending them three months of meat if they’re herbivores, you know?

A really good protective phone case

Age range: Literally any time before or after the baby arrives

I’ve asked a bunch of friends about this, and it seems wildly common: when the baby comes along, suddenly your phone gets dropped 10x as much. When the baby starts crying, it’s easy to forget that your phone was sitting on your lap before you stood up. And when the baby gets older, they will grab your phone and throw it off the table.

A good phone case — something that beefs up the phone without adding a ton of bulk, like an Otterbox Defender ($50) or a LifeProof Slam ($50) — will save your friends hundreds of dollars in screen replacements.

Snoo

Age range: Newborn to “about 6 months” says the company (our son grew out of it at around 4.5 months)

Lets just get this out of the way: $1,200 for a bassinet is a little bananas. That’s one helluva expensive gift.

With that said, the Snoo is… just wonderful. Invented by pediatrician Harvey Karp (author of The Happiest Baby on the Block) and designed by Yves Béhar, it detects when a sleeping baby is starting to fuss, and plays a bit of white noise to try to shush’em back to sleep. If the baby continues to cry, it’ll gently rock them for a few minutes, gradually increasing the rocking through two additional stages. Baby still crying? It turns off and buzzes your phone in the off chance you’re somehow still asleep. It’s by no means a substitute for loving arms providing snuggles and warmth in the middle of the night — but when a baby is still in the early days of figuring out how to transition between sleep stages and is accidentally waking themselves up in the middle of the night, the Snoo might help everyone get a bit more sleep. Plus, the built-in swaddling system keeps the baby on their back while sleeping (as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics)

We went 50/50 on ours with some close friends who were having a baby a few months before us, and it worked out just perfect — our son came along just as their son was growing out of it. Our son is just about to grow out of it and into a bigger crib… and, well, we’re gonna miss the Snoo.

This is one of the few things we bought, fell in love with, then bought another. When the crib is in another room and you just need a place for the baby to layback and hang out for a few, the Rock n’ Play (~$60) is fantastic. It can gently rock the baby and play white noise (but, unlike the Snoo, it’s constant — not just when the baby is fussing). It’s great for smaller homes/apartments, with a relatively small footprint and a super lightweight design that can fold right up when it’s not in use.

Keekaroo Peanut Changing Pad

Age range: Newborn to around 3 years

Before our baby arrived, I didn’t quite understand why I needed a $100+ dollar cushion for our changing table. Any flat surface will do, right?

Turns out, babies are wiggle worms. They don’t understand why you’re pulling them out of their nice cozy crib just to set them on a cold table. Nor do they understand that falling from a few feet up would be bad news for everyone. They’ll roll right off, given the chance.

The Keekaroo Peanut helps make the changing table a bit more comfy, but also gives you a buckling strap and raised edges to help keep your lil’ acrobat from tumbling off (You still need to stay close to the table, of course.) It’s also SUPER easy to clean, thanks to the water-resistant surface.

Gift Guide: 12 really useful gifts for the friends who just had a baby

Welcome to TechCrunch’s 2018 Holiday Gift Guide! Need more gift ideas? Check out our Gift Guide Hub.

Buying the right stuff as a new parent is tough. Buying the right things for a new parent? Even harder.

There’s just way, way too much junk out there marketed at new parents. A lot of it seems useful until you realize it’s just taking up space.

Here are some of the things that came up most:

Headrest mirror

Age range: until the baby is moved to a forward facing car seat

For the first stretch of a baby’s life, their carseat is supposed to face the rear of the car. That means, of course, that you can’t see your baby in the rearview. That’s no fun.

We use the Go by Goldbug ($12). It’s easy to install, adjust, and move from car to car, and it feels super secure once it’s in place.

Philips Hue Bulbs

Age range: All ages.

A 2-bulb starter kit (including the required hub) goes for $70 on Amazon.

Portable/Moveable Philips Hue Switch

Age range: All ages.

If you get the bulbs above, grab one of these Philips Hue Tap switches ($44 on Amazon) too.

I’ve probably poked this goofy little hockey puck a thousand times in the past four months.

Oh, and the neatest part: it doesn’t need batteries. The action of pressing a button charges it up just enough to send the command to the Hue bulb.

Portable white noise machine

Age range: First year, at least.

White noise (think the sound of radio static) helps some babies fall asleep, and sleep more soundly.

There’s about a thousand options for bringing white noise on the go, but the Cloud b Sleep Sheep ($32) has become my go-to.

Google Home/Amazon Echo

Like the Hue Bulbs, usage of my Google Home ($100) has skyrocketed since our baby came along.

Got a baby on the edge of falling asleep? Hey Google, play rain noises.

Want to watch your shows but the baby is already nursing in your arms? Hey Google, play The Good Place on the upstairs TV.

Hey Google, add “freezable teethers” to my shopping list. Hey Google, play lullabies from Spotify. Hey Google, dim the lights.

(Amazon Echos are a totally solid alternative. I like Google Home because it plays friendly with Chromecast, but if the recipient is more a Fire TV fan, go with the Echo)

A (more secure!) baby monitor

Age range: Any age, but extra useful in the first year or two.

Baby monitors are great! Sometimes it feels like baby’s naps are the only times in which you can get anything done, but you still want to keep an eye on them.

And, as a huge plus, the company is pretty open about their security practices and self-auditing efforts.

Instant Pot

Age range: Any

Get’em a good pressure cooking recipe book too, while you’re at it.

Meal delivery Kits

Age range: Extra useful in the first few months, but ask ahead

See above. If finding time to cook is hard, finding time to shop might feel impossible.

A really good protective phone case

Age range: Literally any time after the baby arrives

Snoo

Age range: Newborn to “about 6 months” says the company (our son grew out of it at around 4.5 months)

Lets just get this out of the way: $1,200 for a bassinet is a little bananas. That’s one helluva expensive gift.
