Saw a monetized fanart vs fanfic discussion out in the wild again and it reminded me of this theory I had. It wasn't that fandom artists were given a pass to monetize in a way that fandom writers weren't, it's that professional (and pro-to-be) artists co-opted fandom communities a few years back.

I used to aim for a studio-based illustration career, so I kept up to date on community discussions, watched every free "lesson" I could, made plans to build up a portfolio, etc. The amount of times I heard pro artists (employed at Disney, Sony, AAA studios, etc.) say that nowadays it's a good idea to include fanart in your portfolio was shocking at first, but genuinely everybody that was anybody was saying it. And of course it was another way to game the social media algorithm. I've listened to artists talk seriously about posting fanart to "bait" an audience into following them, intersperse it with original work, then post fanart again to keep people's attention. It was an entire thing.

And then of course you got the success stories. "I posted fanart of Miles Morales that got 100k likes on insta, and then I got a job offer to work on the next Spiderverse movie." In fact, people knew that art directors/hiring managers/whoever sends out the emails regularly browse their IP tags online for fanart AND in-person conventions to look for the next possible hire. Yes, even if they also periodically send cease and desists. I heard a funny story of a guy that got a takedown notice AND a job offer from the same company on the same day.

Obviously not every fan artist is doing this for the exact same reasons, and tbh there's a lot of artists coming up now that arrived at an art scene that to them has always been like this, so they just kind of do the same motions their art idols are doing without thinking to deeply about the why. I think the actual big shift happened when we all got blended together in the same social media sites, and the pro artists (that used to be VEHEMENTLY anti-fanart btw, I forgot to mention that) noticed the kind of reach and networking power appealing to an active and passionate community brought them. I could go on, but that's my main thought. Thanks for the soapbox lol.

My knowledge of fan art history is spotty compared to what I know about fic or vids because I've usually avoided the big art hangouts like DeviantArt due to not liking the culture.

What I do know is that there have been a number of these shifts, and there are a bunch of different factors contributing to this cultural divide. I've been told, for example, that a lot of Marvel and DC artists from decades ago paid the bills by selling other art of the characters that wasn't part of their official jobs (prints of portraits of a character they also drew for comics, etc.). It was a consequence of their shitty pay from the actual comics companies, and so the companies generally turned a blind eye.

There was also a pretty permeable membrane between pro sff artists of ye olde con culture and amateur ones, just like writers and others at those cons weren't really separate. The biggest pro name and the newest nobody were distinct, but it's more of a sliding scale between those than separate categories.

The chance to go viral in a way that Hollywood types can see on twitter/instagram/tiktok/etc. has definitely had a massive cultural impact though, and I doubt it's often a positive one.

Oh, boy. I saw this a little while ago, and all I could think was that the bar is so low at this point--like halfway between the fourth and fifth circles of Hell--and this still somehow falls short.

I know there has been a lot of talk about the t-shirt Anna is wearing (which was a gift from a fan at the stage door of Nye), but for me, the t-shirt is the least concerning part of all this. It's a reference to a quote from Staged (it's the title of a season 1 episode, in fact), and I am sure Michael found it funny. The only problem is that without the context of why it's a joke, it actually just isn't that funny. And it sets the stage for everything else that is happening.

Which brings me to the caption she wrote, which was what primarily caught my attention. The reason Michael is currently trending on Twitter (X, whatever we're calling it) is because of the overwhelmingly positive response to The Assembly, which aired last Friday night. He is receiving a tremendous amount of praise for being on the show, how he spoke to the interviewers, and the respectful and joyous atmosphere that was cultivated on the show. And rather than allude to any of that--not to mention Michael being sick recently, or the trip they went on to Disneyland Paris--Anna made Michael trending on Twitter about her.

That is what stands out to me the most. The idea of "keeping him grounded" that is coming across more like kicking someone when he is already down. That he somehow needs that, and that she would have us believe he is "grateful" to her for, what...comparing him to a loud bird? Repeatedly making fun of his looks and interests without a shred of respect or affection behind it? I'm also confused by the implication (and the irony) that Michael somehow has a large ego that needs to be kept in check when she is the one coming across as self-involved in this Insta story. So, yes. I'm at a bit of loss here.

I just keep thinking of the things she could have said instead. How she could have uplifted Michael, wished him well on returning to the stage tonight after several days' absence, said how she was glad to have spent time with him or taken care of him while he was ill. Just something that would give him a reason to hold his head high. But I guess it might just be easier to convince herself/everyone else that he is smiling if his head is hanging down instead.

I am just glad Michael is out performing again tonight and getting to be on stage and do the thing he truly loves to do. But those are my thoughts, and I'd be glad to hear from my followers about what you think, regardless of whether you agree or disagree...

returning to tumblr (as a tiktok refugee...)

hii yall x3!! i haven't avidly used tumblr since my quarantine ages and with tiktok being gone, now feels like a better time than ever to come back and making this and youtube my main social medias again. insta and twitter both have their own meta-infused issues. i'm really sad about the prospect of it going away. every now and then i keep hearing people say "oh it's just an app, please get over it." say that tone deaf statement to all of the small business owners unable to utilize the platform to promote their products and services, all of the creators who were finally able to make an extra buck with their content, with some even creating a full digital livelihood reliant on their success and brand deals, and all of the other american citizens who used it to connect with others, laugh, and learn something new. the app's wonderful algorithm presented all of these opportunities in a way that just isn't comparable to the other apps that are provided to us in america. i can only continue to hope for the best and stay optimistic for the future of the platform, but as of right now, finding new spaces to occupy doesn't seem like too bad of an idea.

my story:

as for my tiktok experience, i used to post reactionary horror content from 2022 to through to mid-2023 ish? (check out junesreprise on tiktok to see for yourself) and i had a blast carving out my own space in the horror community. however, i severely burnt out with school and slowly but surely grew unable to continue posting. however, i'd post something on my smaller, more personal account every now and then and get that same enjoyment of just connecting with people through the silly little videos i'd make. the algorithm made me feel like i was connecting with people so quickly, finding a small crowd of MY people in what felt like a matter of hours. i've tried platforms like yt shorts and insta reels, but never was able to reach the same levels of success. so of course when i heard about the ban, knowing that i wanted to delve back into making videos when my school life opened up, i was sad. disappointed. i felt like i missed the window, and in many ways, i did.

with it being 2025 now, i've started looking at media analysis in a much more new and introspective light since then, and i'd love to use this space on tumblr, and branch out on youtube to share my findings. i loved decoding horror games and other pieces of obscure media back then, but i really didn't know how to put it in a presentable form without it sounding like i was yapping and rambling on and on. fast forward a couple of years, i now know how to word things effectively :). now all i ever wanna do is sit down and make blogs and youtube documentaries so i can nerd out about all of the media i explore and the theories and connections i make. and i'm beyond excited to share that with everyone here, and on all of the new spaces we find to hopefully create something similar to the same joy and experience we found on tiktok. (like rednote for example, it's actually so funny how fast it blew up so quickly LMFAOOOO i love yall sm)

Um, I don’t usually post something like this but I feel I need to.

I’m curently mostly on twitter, and if you’re there you know how rollercoaster that site is hahaha. Not sure why I’ve been hesitant to open either tumblr or insta..….. and truthfully, I’ve been having some anxiety with my own drawing ability even though I keep drawing things for a long while…

But just now I open this site and sees people still liking and reblogging my very old arts with very kind, funny, excited tags and comments? Specifically the drawings I made just because I want to draw it??

You don’t know how much that suddenly makes me smile, how it oddly makes me feel lighter today and think that It’s ok to just draw what I want, things I like, without doubting and comparing myself to other people constantly even to my own friends.… Makes me miss the time when I don’t think much of what people will think, or fearing that I miss out on the trend when I post my drawings.. even if the feeling only last for a day, I think it’s a good progress.. I’ll remind myself to remember this. This is also the main reason why I write this.

I’m trying to rebuild things, crossposting some of the arts I made, and hopefully I can open an international store for my merch and comic soon.

Lastly, I’m not that good at writing words that exactly best fit with what I feel, and sometimes I don’t know what to say at all. For those still around and cheering on me even though I now rarely post here, thank you so much. I wish you all the good things in life!

Hi Gina ! Hope you are doing well. I am quite new here but there's always been a question in the back of my mind when thinking about Harry's use of social media... Is there a reason Harry doesn't use Twitter much? I mean he posts on Instagram when he's touring, he has posted a few Insta stories here and there, but he's never on Twitter. Do we know why? I was on Twitter this morning & I was kind of surprised that he hasn't posted in a year (since December 2022, literally). He just isn't on Twitter anymore... Could it be because of the general toxicity on Twitter (I mean, the people are kind of ruthless over there) ?

Again, I'm quite new here so I don't know much about this, but when I compare his use of social media to other celebs that I like, there seems to be a general absence from social media on his part lol (obviously he doesn't have to post anything, it was just something I've noticed). Hi, sweetheart. Harry used to be on Twitter and IG a lot. And he was so funny and often very cheeky. When he went solo one of the things he said he did was try to “claw back” some of his privacy and not have every part of his life on display for the public. Part of this involved reducing his use of social media.

I think he also recognized how toxic it was and how unhealthy it was for him to have to read the things people said about him. Ultimately, his IG became strictly career focused with the very occasional personal post—like the 10-year 1D anniversary post—or, now and then, an IG story.

I just think he really has stopped giving the world so much of himself and now limits the glimpses we get of his personality to his concerts, an occasional interview, and his music.

reading and listening to some criticism of the second season of hbos tlou and its a bit funny to me because the criticism are about something I bitched about in 2020 when tlou 2 was released.

and its about the lack of creative spine.

so, from what I heard, the creators are trying too hard to address the nitpicking and criticism that is loud but ultimately misses the point/doesnt matter narratively: joel giving his name to abbys gang, ellie being a petty asshole, abbys muscles in the middle of a post-apo setting etc.

which is xD because this trying too hard too address meaningless whining is also what happened to tlou2 and why I dont think the writing in this game is compelling.

in short: we have two halves of the game. the first half of the game is trying to turn you into a revenge hungry beast and the second half is punishing you for it. now, I dont have a problem with this idea—in more competent hands, it could be an amazing rollercoaster—I have a problem with the execution.

and behind the problem with the execution is the lack of a creative spine.

because what is happening? in the first half, theyre trying to play Bold: look! we killed joel in a gruesome way! arent you mad? dont you want to kill the people who did this to him and turned ellie miserable?

so we control a anger and fury consumed ellie and witness her doing shit that changes her into a shadow of her former self. i dont have a problem with this. i have a problem with how they present the other perspective.

because the shit abby did to joel? revenge planned through years, cold-blooded murder lasting hours? thats messed up even for a post-apo setting.

again: I dont have a problem with it. what I have a problem with is that the creators didnt have the balls to embrace how messed up she is in the later part of the game.

instead, we have these spineless "she has a doggie that is killed by mean ellie", "her dad was a Hero and joel murdered the only person who could have made a vaccine", "she bond with two kids whose mother wants them dead IN THE SPAN OF THREE DAYS even tho she was ready to torture kids just days ago"

the last one is the most baffling to me because its such an obvious attempt at creating a less Problematic TM ellie & joel dynamics; again, addressing the meaningless whining of twitter people who cant handle ambigous relationship. either Problematic TM or Wholesome TM.

because we need the audience to like abby 🥺

so basically tlou2 tries so hard to be Bold and Dark but cant hold it without jumping between extremes; instead of letting abby be messed up and let her grow organically as a character, we have a speed run: kill all her "friends" (theres a reason theres a lot of them; it creates an illusion of abby losing everything, but the truth is these "friends" lack any depth - besides owen and maaaybe mel - and exist only to ellie to slaughter them and make the audience feel bad for abby 🥺), let her rescue two kids because her Saint daddy gave her a thumbs up in a dream (xD) and have an insta-bond with them (compare this to how ellies and joels relationship developed in the first game).

in short: we want to be Bold and put you in the shoes of someone who killed the protag of the first game, but pls pls pls like abby

I watched that video. I am absolutely appalled that none of them put milk before cereal. EXCEPT MY GOAT MR NINJABRAIN. bless his soul 😭 for me, the amount of milk depends on the amount of cereal I put. so if I put half a bowl of cereal, I do a quarter bowl of milk so it soaks enough ^_^ it makes it taste nicer. As much as the boys find their musicallys cringey I kinda love them, maybe because most of them are adorable. They tried so hard and at times clearly had fun with it, though I can understand why they stopped. It was a fun time full of content back then though compared to now where we get barely anything for months on end and then suddenly a huge content drop as we approach October.

what's so funny is YEARS ago, back when i first joined the fandom, there was a video that had all of their musicallys in it, and it was an hour and thirty minutes long. it got deleted or removed a couple years back. so as someone that watched all of their musicallys at one point, ngl.... most of them aren't that cringey. i don't think they're non-embarrassing either, but i don't think they are like 'wake up in a cold sweat from a dream' type of cringe lol

tbh they were just doing what everyone else was doing. i actually think their tiktoks from the trap house 2.0 era are more embarrassing bc they were trying too hard to be funny.

i get why things are more spaced out now. i think in a way they ran themselves thin doing what they used to do. bc at one point, they were posting on twitter once a day, once a day on insta, and then sometimes twice a week on youtube. then things calmed down a little, but they would still post once a week on every platform and that can be exhausting and really time consuming. not to mention the internet isn't exactly the most lovely place to be on all the time, so it's mentally taxing to do it like that anymore. colby outwardly admitted to being unable to read comments all that much anymore so.... i get it. it sucks, but i get it.

The thing that most people comment about my relationship with Lee is our height difference. Most of the time we don't really care about it, and it doesn't affects us in any way, but, we can't just ignore it. It's there, and it makes it's presence when I'm on tip toes trying to get something from the heightest shelf in kitchen, or when we're on a plane and he doesn't really fit much of the space. Sometimes I call him "big bird" when he is annoying me, and he calls me "shortcake" all the time. Also, when we're walking our dog out people gives us funny looks. And I'm not even that short, I'm 5'4, but everyone is short around my boyfriend's 6'5 tall figure.

It's hella cute to see a big man as Lee, walking a tiny black flat coated retriever on the streets. Even though walking Gus out drives attention, being seen around with me gives people enough to talk about, so we just have been avoiding to get out of the house together. Long enough to people start speculating we broke up. Which is funny, because we just got engaged.

"Gus, go tell your father that dinner is ready," I said to the dog beside me, that went running out of the kitchen.

We're celebrating our "one week engagement", so I made Swedish meatballs with spaghetti for the occasion. I'm not very good at the kitchen, and that's one of the reasons I still ask myself "what have this man seen in me?", but I still try to impress him. Lee on the other hand is a great cooker. I wonder if there's something he can't do.

After I set the table, I poured us some wine and waited for my fiancé while scrolling through my twitter time-line. It's funny to read people's theories about our "possible break-up".

"HI honey, I'm sorry it took me so long," Lee says while walking down the stairs. He comes in my direction and leans down to leave a peck in my lips. "What are you reading?" He points to my phone.

"People are saying you're one of the most eligible bachelors in Hollywood at the moment," I smirked at him and he scoffed rolling his eyes.

"Please, it's only have been four months since we're last seen together. I don't understand how people can jump to that "break-up" conclusion so fast," Lee commented, taking a full fork of spaghetti to his mouth.

"To be fair, you've been only posting pictures of Gus on your insta..." I shrugged.

"It's your fault, shortcake. You say you don't like to exposes us so much," He raised one brow at me.

"Yeah, I don't like to see people saying the same things all the time. It's kinda frustrating having everyone pointing out our height difference in the comments of every single picture of us," I mumbled and he took his hand to meet mine in a supportive way, his thumb caressing the back of my hand.

"I know, I'm sorry baby. You know I would shrink myself for you if I could," Lee said and I snorted, sipping from my glass of wine.

"You're so silly, big bird" I looked at him with a silly smile on my face.

"And yet, you love me madly. I must've been doing something right," He shrugged and I bit my lip.

"I can think a couple things you're doing just right," I murmured under my breath as I sipped from the wine, and I could feel his burning gaze at me, just as well his wicked smirk.

"Oh, really? Mind to list those things for me?" Lee said in his low voice, putting down his cutlery. I finished my glass, feeling a little more naughty because of the alcohol.

"I could spend the rest of the night listining all the great things you do to me, or... we could just go to our room so I can show you in practice," I bit my lip harder as I pressed my thighs together, and I watched his look getting darker in lust.

"Oh shortcake, I'm about to add some more things to your list."

Allie, I just saw H' insta story. Isn't it kinda offending and not cool. It's like he's taking a dig at us. It's your show bro, you should see to it that the prices are at a normal range. We aren't rich like you. I hate to compare Louis and Harry, but Louis is literally so good with what he's doing for affordability and fans in general. I really don't think H doesn't has any say in all these vip princing for his shows. It's all about principles I guess.

I don’t think it’s about that, I think people making it about price tickets are missing the point *completely* I’m sorry. Yes, Harry’s tickets are ridiculously expensive, like a lot of other artists that are as hyped as he is right now. Maybe Harry could try to do something about it and make it more affordable?? Absolutely! But to be honest I think he’s just playing the game and that’s how it is.

As for the sign… it was obviously a joke IMO, I have no idea if that person actually went into debt or whatever and that’s not my problem (or Harry’s). The point this person was trying to make (and when you translate the sign to portuguese this becomes so obvious) was that they did a lot to be there so they deserve to be noticed. Which is basically the same as those stupid signs he used to read in america “I ran over a deer on my way here” “I missed someone’s funeral to be here” “I got fired to be here”. It’s all the same thing, I have no idea why Harry encourages these kinds of signs so much, clearly most of them are not even real, it’s just people trying to be noticed. So IMO the sign is obviously a joke, but not a funny one. On top of that, and what’s more concerning, is that encourages the behaviour of competition of who is “real” fan, better fans are the ones going to every single show, no matter what. Real fans buy everything, go everywhere, stalk him, etc. It’s the only way of showing their love. It’s such a toxic fandom culture. I had an anon very recently talking about this kind of behaviour on twitter, it’s fucked up! So that’s why I hate it, it’s not that deep, but I don’t think he should be encouraging that anyway, I think it’s annoying.
