Something always bugged me about the fruits and vegetables in Alterna compared to the ones in the Greater Inkadian/Splatlandian region.

According to a page in the Splatoon artbook, fruits and veggies evolved/genetically mutated to resemble squids, (eg. Squid Fin Lemons, "Squiddage" (cabbage), Squid Leg Grapes, squidkin (pumpkin), Squiddymelon?) But then Tomatoes are JUST Tomatoes. No change in either appearance or name. And its known to the NSS that tomatoes were grown in human times accoring to one of Marie's lines reading "...they should've let tomatoes go extinct..." ("they" being the human occupants of Alterna ofc.)

Meaning 1: the Tomato plant and its fruit had been known to Inkfish before ROTM

And 2: Marie had to have tried them at some point and found out her distaste for them

So if that were the case.. why dont the Tomatoes have squid pun names/appearances if they were known to Inklings WAY before the discovery of Alterna? If they were always there, then wouldnt they be named with the same format as the rest? And have some unique feature that links it to Inkling appearance?

ok lemme pick apart your ask >According to a page in the Splatoon artbook, fruits and veggies evolved/genetically mutated to resemble squids The other very plausible option other than a natural evolution/mutation is that these plants were selectively bred to look squid shaped or to react with ink. This would make a lot of sense with the amount of plants that are unchanged. (like a lot of decorative/inedible plants look normal, and it seems like just some fruits and veggies are squid-shaped) This would fit with how humans selectively bred these very fruits and vegetables to be easier/better to eat in the first place.

to address the main question. if you have nothing but this crop of this page it looks like there's just. regular tomatoes. it might just be older concept art though, or rather the shape of the structure the tomatoes are in was more important than the fruit's design in those drawings. but right above this section, there is art for a squid-shaped tomato

and in the art of splatoon 2 it appears again, being called an ink tomato. (...next to a squiddymelon erroneously just called a watermelon)

the fun thing about these tomatoes is not only are they squid shaped, but they also react to ink color! they can be seen growing in kelp dome, the fruits change depending on team color.

(shout out to @splatreference for always having the extremely specific ungoogleable screenshots i need) beyond that though it seems like non-ink tomatoes exist. represented as sculptures in salmonid territory+check the salad. these look like cherry tomatoes though

the species list has a section for plants too!

ok one last thing I didnt realize marie mentioned she wishes they let tomatoes go extinct in alterna. LOL. i think this is in reference to her news dialogue for kelp dome in s1:

Callie: 「そう言えば、じーちゃんが子供の時　トマトとか　無かったらしいよ！」 (Say, Gramps said that when he was little, tomatoes and such didn't even exist!) Marie: 「その時代に　生まれたかった…」 (I wish I was born back then...)

oh yeah wait this dialogue. what do you mean tomatoes didnt even exist. options: -cuttlefish is just lying to his grandkids (possible. old people will do that.) -food culture changed dramatically for the naturally carnivorous inkfish, and became more varied and veggie heavy in the past 100 or so years (also possible. and interesting)

this line of dialogue has crossed my mind before and now i subject you all to it too<3

SSBU! Inkling Headcanons

General:

All are veteran competitors, having fought since day one.

Some are famous. Others more infamous. Then some of them are not well known but very skilled.

All are friendly towards one another and consider themselves something of a team when it's not about beating each other up. Though not all of them are besties. Some of em do fight.

Tend to hang around the Koopalings, Pokemon, Mario Characters and Sonic.

Most are Asian (or like. splatoon era equivalent), or at least partially so. I'll be referring to them all by our current day regions for convenience but yknow it's more like. Splatoon version. I assume most Inklings are situated around asia but that they are pretty worldwide or at least span far enough to have different ethnicities.

Orange ("Orange", Sumomo Surume) she/her

15-16 by smash?

Japanese

Tomboyish, not fond of anything too "girly" though she has a soft spot for some cute mascot characters and some pretty stationary.

Closest with Blue, also very friendly with Yara and Nasubi.

Wears a lot of the athleisure sort of gear. Squidforce and Tentatek

Rebellious, energetic, and at times a bit fiery.

Sometimes a bit childish. Gets pretty competitive.

A sort of Jack of All Trades, decent at most weapons and modes, but she prefers Turf War and her trusty splattershot!

A bit of a troublemaker, but it's all in good fun! Gets up to mischief with the Koopalings and some of the Pokemon.

Finds Sonic super awesome. They r pals and she looks up to him.

Still crushed about Squid Squad. Likes Front Roe but it's not the same...

Has grandparents in the countryside. She visits for a week or so at the tail end of summer.

Tends to get nervous when it comes to daunting and especially risky tasks.

A bit basic, someone who tends to go with the trends. He does fall out of this with time, though, starting to dig the old school more than the new come 3.

Sunny and bright, with a penchant for the dramatic. Tries to act more serious and stern but it's easy to break up the act.

Post WOL , the Squid Sisters and Cuttlefish knew of her bravery and made her and the others honorary members. They know they are trustworthy to call upon if need be.

Fav idols are Deep Cut. Mainly Big Man but appreciates their delinquent nature in general.

On the same team as Blue in their homeworld. They're sort of like Goggles and Specs (but not bc i haven't read coroika) though Blue is less zany and Mica is a bit more of an asshole.

Takes time to warm up to people.

Closest to Blue and Hikaru. Also friendly with Rory though she is very insistent that he needs to lighten up. Gets along well enough with Jett and Orange though he tends to piss them both off a little. Yara is ok w/ them. They don't get along with Nasubi that much.

Violet (Hikaru Sumi) she/they

Charger main, miffed that she couldn't bring it in with her. But she also uses the Gal and Nzap so it wasn't an awful change to make.

Impressive Stationary collection. lots of glitter pens and highlighters

Sanrio Girlie. Likes cutesy low-grade nondescript alt fashion... new to the scene.

Keeps a diary and sketchbook. Scarily defensive and secretive about both.

When she's not with the other ink fish she's hanging around Dark Pit, the Kirby Gang, Jigglypuff and the Princesses. She sees the latter bunch as older sister or motherly figures and goes to them for advice.

Also very curious about the villains.

Small lil crush on Sephiroth. Though an innocent passing phase, the few smashers who do know fear the prospect of Sephiroth finding out lest he use it to manipulate her (think ace and buttercup in that one ep of ppg)

Does crush easily

Doesn't have a good home life. It is acceptable and possible for inklings her age to spend a lot of time away from home and even move out for school or work, but she is working up the courage to do so. Until then she spends a lot of time at the mansion

Knows either piano or violin. Writes poetry or possible songs.

Pretty quiet, tends to keep to herself unless she's familiar with the people she's around.

Generally serious and tries to be proper and polite

Big fan of Squid Sisters and Off the Hook. If she had to choose a favorite it'd be the latter but both are great. Also fond of Chirpy Chips and Ink Theory. The Gold Bazookas are a little much for her but still appreciates the vision

Gets along with Mica bc they have similar issues of feeling isolated but their friendship is a very quiet one and they're not like. Chummy

Same goes for Nasubi. Hikaru find the two's fighting upsetting.

A mimic octoling! From the outskirts of the Octarian territories, but moved/fled when he was around 11/12. Post WOL the secret is out. Normally his hair is either like the default punk cut or the scrapped haircut with bangs over the eyes.

Big on fashion as well, but more fond of DIY and thrifty trade than Mica's more pretentious taste.

Speaking of. Doesn't get along with Mica well. They clash a lot.

Gets into the most trouble of the bunch, often accidentally. Just has that sort of luck.

Street smart but scatterbrained and a big risk-taker. Tends to prefer what looks cool to what is practical. A little rough around the edges

Jokester, at times people get irritated that he doesn't seem to take anything seriously. Probably a self proclaimed "meme lord" at some point in his life.

Loves Diss-Pair, Sashimori and Dedf1sh. Anything rock or hip-hop.

Also a fan of omega 3 probably. Pro-salmonid which is another reason he doesn't like Mica, as they work for Grizzco.

Low grade punky-emo-somethin. Dresses the part a lil more outside of battles. likes a lot of y2k ish stuff
