Ohohohohoho there are answers to your questions!
Jaegercon interview in which Travis Beacham explains whole deal with Herc Hansen, his first Jaeger, and his first co-pilot.
Post in which Travis Beacham explains what Stacker Pentecost meant by "carrying nothing into the drift."
Also, no, the whole American west coat wasn't destroyed. Trespasser did smash up a few cities in California, but it was the only kaiju to hit the US west coast before Jaegers were developed, and no city was destroyed once Jaegers were developed.
Regarding Newt and Hermann - Hermann is the son of Lars Gottlieb, who was involved in the early development of the Jaeger program. Hermann also developed code for a few Mark-1 Jaegers. We also see Hermann just run into LOCCENT to get Pentecost's attention, so... yeah, it's safe to say he's pretty important, lol.
There's also a cut scene where Newt slips into the Jaeger repair bay to steal some hardware for his kaiju drift rig. Either he stole an ID card from someone with clearance, or his own ID card gives him clearance. Also, the guy has an entire band's worth of musical instruments in the lab. So like, yeah, pretty good chance he's considered pretty important here. Also like, given how much importance Pentecost was giving the kaiju drift experiment, it's pretty safe to bet that he was giving Newt a lot of privileges here.
Things I noticed on my Pacific Rim rewatch:
1. Raleigh had his left arm ripped off while he was piloting the left hemisphere, then had his right arm and leg shredded while he was piloting the right hemisphere. Holy fuck he has been through it. His resilience and battle focus is enough to be recognized by Pentecost, whose solo Tokyo battle was three hours long.
2. Implied that Hercules Hansen was one of the OGs, like Cherno Alpha. Wonder what happened to his copilot before he began drifting with his son. Wonder what happened to the Jaeger he piloted before Striker Eureka.
3. Pentecost says he carries nothing into the drift, but that just means he knows how to match with anyone, right? Wonder what that final drift was like in Chuck Hansen's head.
4. Tendo Choi is in command of the bridge when neither Pentecost nor Herc Hansen is present. I forgot that he reverts to Cantonese in stress situations, love these details.
5. I enjoy the bilinguals of this film. Also really interesting choice to focus on the western rim of the Pacific Ocean: Australians, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, and a badass Marshal who strikes deals with the black market and literally anyone else who will fund the Jaeger program. We get to have industrial apocalypse, alien thriller, and cyberpunk in one film. (Side question: are the Americas' coastlines devastated?)
6. Mako's expressions are so. Agh. Her face shows what she's feeling with unshielded honesty (she feels so much, like Raleigh) but she carries herself like Pentecost: deliberate, controlled. Very much his student (daughter).
7. Newt and Hermann are obsessed with their scientific theories being right, even if it means the possible doom of humankind. Iconic Academics. Also they must be important enough to have helicopters on call, since they run out of one to get to the bridge in time for the final fight.
8. Final goodbyes between Stacker Pentecost and Mako Mori.
9. Mako and Raleigh are two of many orphans who had no intention of surviving the war that took their families. Raleigh's last sacrifice was simultaneously the most selfless and selfish thing to do. Good for him to have survived, Mako would've found it hard to forgive him.
10. "Stop the clock."

Pacific Rim Fans!
With the disappointing box office returns for Pacific Rim Uprising, it’s unlikely we will ever see another Pacific Rim movie. But the franchise has enough fans and a big enough cult following that it doesn’t have to end there. Let’s bring back Jaegercon! Share more art, stories, music, and all sorts of fan made paraphernalia. Organize some watch parties and fand gatherings. Pacific Rim doesn’t have to end with Uprising. There is so much more that can be done.
I’m more than willing to do my part in helping get this thing moving again!

you know what's weird?
all these physical meetups and conventions and things getting cancelled and not very many people seem interested in just moving online?
i guess it's bc they figure: they're online all the time, it's not special, it's nothing different
maybe it's all moved to discord or streaming services? but it's just that, to me, tumblr would actually be great for this
we used to have events on here - remember jaegercon? and with the new group chat and photo/video functions it would be even easier to do so now?
some people have jumped on the idea: making and reblogging posts to support artists or crafters that won't be making con money, etc. for example
but why not just have a con here? i say tumblr instead of discord or twitter because 1) public, so larger audience 2) hosts multiple kinds of media: video, links, photos, long texty explanation posts 3) unlike twitter everything on a single blog is chronological, uninterrupted, easy to see by scrolling and 4) people can submit posts or use a specific public tag to make their additions visible to those interested
people have already set aside the time
'staff' make an account for it - announce a date and time
set up livestreams for the panels or just have panelists post their main thoughts and then take turns answering asks during a specific time period (just like tumblr itself does with promos),
let artists or sellers submit posts with their wares to 'artist alley' or whatever so people can browse
have groupchats in specific timeslots for that convention hall feeling
you can still have cosplayers posting photos even if there aren't physical photo ops
just, like, take the time and make it an actual online Event somewhere - pick a site, pick a manner of access, set up a way to take donations or get payments for admission to a 'convention space' if you have to
why let all the work go to waste? some things are lost - find other ways to make good things happen. people love to feel a part of something, give them something to feel a part OF
just my thoughts
#txt#online conventions#fandom conventions#jaegercon was fun!#mishapocalypse was fun for#a certain type of user#and hey there's a blacklist now#so if someone doesn't want to see stuff#ghey don't have to#but seriously i would love#a dash full of people posting#'what i would be doing at _con'#or '_con panel' posts#or cosplays#or links to artstreams#it doesn't have to be just#'shrug' guess it's not happening#i'm mad sxsw didn't jump on this#so easy to have artist showcases online#not as fun as live? yeah#but better than just nothing?#i could be online with a ton of other folks like me#enjoying a real time experience#but instead i guess it's just#whatever's on netflix#like okay y'all#you could do discord too#have 'attendees' pay for an access link#but that limits the number of people so

MAKO: EVEN MORE BADASS THAN YOU THOUGHT
Ok, so like many people I was amused/annoyed that Raleigh will not shut up the entire time he is Drifting with Mako even though they are literally in each other's heads, because when it's just the one dude talking the whole time it makes it seem like he's in charge even though they should be equal co-pilots.
However, like many things in Pacific Rim, if you pay close attention to the visuals, it turns out there's a whole other story going on. And that story is about how Mako Mori is a stone-cold BAMF.
So, when they first suit up, Raleigh takes the right hemisphere of Gipsy Danger (because his left arm is shot) and Mako takes the left side, his old position*.

(source)
Why is this important, you ask?
Because:
Left-handed flying punch (source)
Left-handed oil tanker/baseball bat (source)
And, of course
Left-handed sword (source)
(I couldn't find any gifs, but I'm pretty sure Mako's the first one to pick up cargo containers to punch Leatherback in the head with, too.)
In fact, by the end of the movie, during the assault on the Breach Gipsy Danger has lost an arm and has one leg severely crippled... on the right side. Leaving Mako with the only fully functional limbs.
(source)
So it turns out the reason that Raleigh talks the whole time is because Mako gets to commit THE MOST AWESOME FIGHT MOVES YOU HAVE EVER SEEN and he gets to provide the dramatic narration. Teamwork!
Oh, and did I mention this probably saved the world?
During the fight in Hong Kong, we learn that the kaiju have a hive-mind and that they can pass along information through the Breach. Even when they're dead! Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon, and Striker Eureka all have long and badass records, and yet they're taken out relatively quickly... because the kaiju have encountered them so many times before, and have specifically engineered the new monsters with ways to neutralize them (an extra limb against Crimson Typhoon! Acid that eats through Cherno Alpha's heavy armor! An EMP that fries Striker Eureka's jet speed and fancy weapons systems!).
Unfortunately for the kaiju, they were not expecting the return of Gipsy Danger. They were not expecting Raleigh Becket, whose chief combat characteristic is unpredictability.
And they definitely were not expecting Mako Mori.
* Unlike human brains, it seems like the right hemisphere actually controls the right side of the jaeger and the left hemisphere the left side, which frankly makes WAY MORE SENSE, GEEZ BRAIN, I STILL HAVE DIFFICULTY TELLING MY RIGHT AND LEFT HANDS APART** WHICH MADE THIS POST PRETTY INTERESTING TO WRITE.
** THE LEFT HAND MAKES AN L YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW GRATEFUL I AM FOR THIS.

I made a Jaeger name generator, as the link title would suggest. It's not much, just a bunch of words put into a generator template. Most of the work was making the damn page layout perfect. Anyway, the words consist of supercomputer names, the greek alphabet, and canon name parts. If you have any word suggestions, or anything drop me an ask.
