Thank Christ the girls are with their grandmother tonight. He’d be stupid to say he didn’t know this was coming. Like it hasn’t been building since [REDACTED]. If he’s honest, probably much longer than that. They’ve had little spats over the years, but nothing like this. Nothing where it all finally bubbled to the top, erupting violently from the fissures they’ve carefully tended to keep them from breaking.  He takes a deep breath, digging his fingernails into the meat of his palms before he slowly, purposely exhales.  “Cor?” Tommy announces himself not wanting to upset her further. He steps around the broken glass, reaching out to touch her shoulder. Anything.  “Don’t.” Her voice is warbling and broken. A facsimile of the woman he loves, the mother of their children. The woman who’s laughter he’d recognize anywhere. He didn’t realize until now how long it’s been since he’s heard it.  He lowers his arm, but doesn’t step away. If they’re going to do this he doesn’t want to put any more distance between them. His tongue swipes out to wet his lips.  “Cora, what can I do? I’m trying, I swear to god I am. I just- I need you to help me here.”  Her back stiffens for the briefest moment, like she hadn’t meant for him to see, then relaxes again. She doesn’t let go of the table, her hands gripping the edge.  “Love me,” she chokes out.  He doesn’t understand. 
“Love you? What are you talking about? I do love you. I’ve loved you from the-”
“Not like him.” 
It’s so quiet he nearly misses it. But the three small words hit him like a punch to the chest. He doesn’t have to ask who she means. They both know. Just like they both know there’s nothing he could say right now, or ever, to make this better. 
“Do you think I don’t notice, Tommy? The way you look at him, talk about him? The way you’re always happier when you two have been out? I can only assume what’s happening.” She sniffs, wiping the back of one hand across her face. “I didn’t want to believe it at first. I didn’t even think anything of it. But then. One day it clicked and I- I don’t know how I never saw it before.” 
A ball of ice forms in the pit of his stomach, branching out to wind around his spine, crystallizing  over his lungs. There’s no debating what she’s about to say. 
Cora huffs out a cruel, disbelieving laugh. “I was so naïve thinking you missed me. Like some fairytale where you were gone and it made you want to be closer when you came home. What a fool I was.”
She finally turns around, looking at him for the first time since this all started. Her makeup is a mess, running down her tear streaked face. “Tell me. Did you really ever love me at all? Or was I some consolation prize for you? A way for you to still feel like a man after you fucked him?” 
He winces at the accusation as his nails dig deeper into his palms. If they aren’t drawing blood they will soon. 
"It wasn't like that!"
"Fine then," she counters. "Tell me what it was like."
There are a million things he wants to say, none of them good enough for what she deserves to hear. In the end he settles on a version of the truth he won’t completely hate himself for. 
“You were never a second choice, Cora. Believe it or not I do love you. More than you can possibly imagine.” His nose stings as tears begin forming. He blinks them away even as new ones follow right behind. “I knew when you looked across that dance hall. When you sat your drink down, marched over and told me to dance with you. I knew then that we were meant to have a future. Something incredible together.” 
“But?” 
“I loved him first,” he admits softly. Part of him is exuberant at being able to say it out loud. To share it with the other person he loves more than life itself. The other part is jagged and cutting, ripping him apart from the inside out. “And I never thought we’d see each other again. That I could leave it in the past, move forward.” 
Ashamed, he stares at the floor. “I can’t.”

tbh mainstream television shows depresses me. I feel like we started getting dark in the 2010s, and I'm personally thinking it's not my cup of tea because I like to have my media be escapism for me.
But this is late-stage capitalism, and I feel like in their own way, every writer is basically showcasing their own effects on what they are experiencing in the times they live. So, it feels like they're ruining old stories and, in a way, maybe they are. Or maybe they're rewriting everything to fit the reality we live in, or what people feel like reality should be instead of us just thinking about the past.
But honestly, what was wrong with what we had? Why do we have to rewrite it? Was the magic of the past really a lie? Do we need a dark retelling for everything or everyone to tell us that Santa Clause was just a lie? Can't we still believe in things, believe in the good our parents used to tell us exist even if there isn't proof of it anywhere? Can't we just create good? Why are stories about hope and goodness just boring to people these days? Do we have new definitions of it now?
I'm not saying that we shouldn't explore villains and their humanizations. I'm just saying that not everything we watch and write should solely focus on trauma and that trauma be used as a key card for redemption all because we feel bad for a particular character. You may have a bad past and maybe it led you to do bad stuff, that happens, but you don't get a free pass just because of that.
And because we feel bad for certain villains, writers want to write more whump and then worser 2 dimensional villains just so they don't have the audience asking for that villain's redemption. Forget redemption! Write redemption for a character if it leads to that, but don't force it! And I'm sorry most redemption arcs just feel forced!
Where was I getting with this?
Right, mainstream tv just doesn't cut it for me but unfortunately movies and shows are how consuming things, and I don't have much patience in reading. There's a lot of classics I want to get back into and Once Upon a Time has inspired me to want to get back into fairy tales, but I never did. I bought some fairy tale books from Barnes and Nobles a while back for a fanfic I wanted to write but, in the end, never opened it and eventually gave it away to Goodwill.
I want to get back into writing. I have two OUAT fics in mind focusing on the Peter Pan characters. At first, I was focusing mostly on Peter Pan, but I'm thinking of expanding on focusing on other characters like Hook, Tinkerbell and Wendy, and finally and most importantly Emma Swan and Henry Mills.
I definitely should write some notes or timeline with the Snow White characters because I genuinely am unsure if the writers wrote a good enough closure for Snow White and Regina and frankly, I don't even know if closure is possible. Yeah, Mary Margaret did do a shitty thing to Regina with Cora, but in the end of the day, Regina has done 10x's worse to Mary Margaret that I cannot in good faith accept their friendship even though I think their friendship is cute and love their dynamics. The writers have written too much good baggage and as much as I love their friendship and do want them to be sort of mother-daughter kind of, I love their enemy dynamics more.
The potential friendship and complicated feelings these two women have for each other is what makes their tense relationship amazing! It's the tension that gives their enemy dynamic spice and keeps us watching and the moment the writers decided Regina is deserving of redemption, for whatever reason, it was Snow who was the first to give Regina a chance it felt (maybe I'm wrong though), and while that does make sense, it also doesn't. Yes, it's in Snow's nature to always give people chances, but Regina is someone who's done so much personal wrong and torture towards herself and her loved ones. It's Regina, who's the reason why she couldn't raise Emma with Charming, and not only done that wrong towards her family, but also towards a majority of the inhabitants of the Enchanted Forest. She displaced them and then cursed them. She took away their happy endings. Where are the repercussions for that? Should she just be forgiven just because she happens to be Henry's mother?
And what about Emma? Regina was the reason Emma grew up as an orphan. I can tell Emma has a lot of compassion for Regina and in the end, Emma will always forgive and give Regina a chance because Henry does love Regina and Regina is Henry's mom, but even Emma can tell that something is wrong with Regina. And long before the curse is broken, she's seen sides of Regina and how she affects people particularly the men around her into self-destruction, and that concerns her a lot. Regina is willing to destroy anyone if it means she herself is happy, but what about Henry's happiness? Not once, in Season 1 anyway, is it shown that Regina is thinking of Henry first. So I guess I have to continue the series, but when it comes to Regina and Emma, it depends on how Regina percieves and cares about Henry. Henry is the one thing they have in common. He's their kid.
But just because Henry is their connecting point, what about Emma's past. What about Regina's? What about her being the evil queen and being the reason Emma wasn't able to grow up with her parents and have a childhood of belonging, instead she gets feelings of abandonment and believing no one could ever truly love her? Regina is the source and reason she has these feelings. Does she ever...confront Regina about this? Does she ever allow herself to fully grieve once she finds the truth and be truly angry at the unfairness of all. That her entire existence is basically just to clean up Regina's and Rumple's mess? What about her own happy ending?
So those are the questions I'm currently having in Once Upon a Time. I'm gonna continue to comment as I live watch and consider all this for my AU fic because I'm sorry by the time we came to season 3, I just stopped watching. I really hated the Neverland arc.
And due to my hatred of the Neverland arc, I'm stuck wondering should I keep to the characters Once writers have already constructed, with Hook's name being Killian Jones when in the book it was James Hook. Is Hook gonna be an abandoned kid who was enslaved or should I stick to the original childhood of James Hook where he was an alumni at Eton which frankly I prefer more than Once's history of Hook. If I do the one I prefer, the Killian Jones you knew would not exist. In fact, I don't know if I would even stick to calling him that and yet it's Killian Jones whose connected to OUAT, and if I don't use that name, you might end up imagining Jason Isaacs Captain Hook which frankly I enjoyed more because I mean, as much as I love the gothic boy band guy liner get up, it's ridiculous. Jason Isaacs Captain Hook is more accurate to the novel and play. So idk really. idk. I really have to think about these things more. I would like to think of Colin O'Donogue's Hook, but I want his backstory to fit actual Hook. Okay sure, keep to the joining the Royal Navy. Maybe keep to the fact his father abandoned them...but a slave for so long and no education when the real Captain Hook was a classy gentlemen with an aristocratic air who clearly showcases a well-rounded education. Hook does not seem like a common man and yet the way Once has written Killian Jones is nothing but a common man. Which is fine, maybe that makes him more likable, Idk. I like common man characters...but it's just not Captain Hook.
Anyway that's my rant. Need to get it out of my system. Might come back to this to take some notes for my future fic. Who knows. Or maybe I'm just writing this to get it out of my system.
