probably the best ‘last series’ of a tv show in my opinion is series 3 of yes minister. it’s technically a cop-out, since yes PM follows, but every episode perfectly sets up and illustrates the character development we’ve seen, and hints at how dynamics might work in their later positions.
jim acknowledges how he’s having to let his morals slip to keep up in politics (the whiskey priest), but is ultimately fine with it, so long as there’s self-gain (the middle-class rip-off, etc). humphrey’s scotland office panic (skeleton in the cupboard) sets the groundwork for some of his more dramatic YPM breakdowns (the key). bernard, i think, goes through the most development, with the moral vacuum (the whiskey priest) and politics discussions (the middle-class rip-off), as well as his much-increased scheme-y-ness, really setting up his larger role in YPM.
they also work together much more this series, i think, like it or not (the moral dimension). like overall, i just feel like each episode’s ending is such a good summary of and closing point for each character, with an even-ish number of ‘wins’/‘draws’ between humphrey and jim.
kinda interested in making a chart tallying wins/losses/draws/them against other characters.

Chapters: 18/? Fandom: Black Sails Rating: Mature Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: James McGraw/Thomas Hamilton/Miranda Hamilton, Madi/John Silver, James McGraw & John Silver Characters: James McGraw, Thomas Hamilton, Miranda Hamilton, Madi Scott, John Silver, Alfred Hamilton, Admiral Hennessey, Eleanor Guthrie, Max (Black Sails), Anne Bonny, "Calico" Jack Rackham, Charles Vane Additional Tags: modern day AU, Homophobia, Internalized Homophobia, Anti-Polygamy, Polyamory, non-sexual relationship, Found Family, Lawyers, royal navy - Freeform, A Few Good Men - Freeform, Past Child Abuse, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD, War Profiteering, Crime, Everyone is Shameless, Islamophobia, Pro-Islam, Sex Trafficking, discussion of sexual abuse of a minor, non-graphic discussion of sexual abuse, Barristers, Navy, Court Room Drama
Summary:
James and Thomas are blinking at her with the dull early morning look of two men who very much want to go back to sleep. Miranda swipes her thumb across the screen, and pulls the phone to her ear. "Hello?"
It's Peter Ashe. "Have you seen the news?" he asks, pressing on before she could say a word. "There are pictures in the paper. Intimate ones. Of you, Thomas, and James." Her fingers tighten around the phone. She closes her eyes, and takes a deep breath. Then, pulling it from her ear, she taps the speakerphone button.
"Say that again," she beseeches quietly. He does. He repeats it, and tells them more. At some point in the night, a hacker released dozens of stolen photographs.
Now, all of England and beyond were discussing how an MP of Thomas' reputation was actually gay, that a Naval Officer with James' CV was a home wrecker, and how Miranda was either the victim of her husband's deviations, or a slut begging for more.
_____
Modern AU: In which Thomas, Miranda, and James are outed to the press.
I’d been watching Criminal Justice, and dear god, it gave me an itch to re-read this utterly incredible story. I’d recommended it previously here, but it’s so goddamn good, it deserves a fresh rec for those who might have missed it. By god, are you in for a treat. You Can’t Handle The Truth is a superb Black Sails Modern-Day AU. It’s a beautifully written and intriguing political, crime, and legal drama, backed up with dense world building. Miranda’s POV is magnificent. She’s incredibly nuanced and complicated, and so elegantly realized. I could write love letters to all of the characters and their excellent characterization - to Thomas, to John, to Madi, to James, to Max, to Anne, to Jack - each of them rich and complex, with their own idiosyncrasies. Seeing Thomas’ past unfold is such a gut punch, as is John’s sub-plot, but spoilers! The relationship between Miranda, James, and Thomas is just fantastic, as are John and Madi. The dynamic between all the characters is such a delight. The protective dynamic between John and James. The friendship between Madi and Miranda. The understanding (and teasing) between John and Thomas. Jack... interacting with everyone and being Jack. so goddamn good  The amount of research that must have gone into so many levels of this story is incredible, and how effortlessly it is all brought to life. (Writing the court room scenes alone, like, I can’t even imagine. Managing the internal logic, whilst also keeping up the tension and pacing? Goddamn.)  You Can’t Handle The Truth grabs you from the very beginning and never lets up, and it is a thrill watching the story unfold, as the stakes get higher and higher. The tightly foreshadowed mystery set-up and pay-off is so masterfully done. I was not expecting the depth and density to the conspiracy, with so many twists and turns. To not only have that, but to have such exceptional characterization and prose is just a never-ending delight. The parallels, twists, and homages to the characters’ story arcs in Black Sails is just masterfully done.
An absolutely addictive and captivating read, I can’t recommend it enough.

DIFFERENT SCENES FOR DIFFERENT GENES
I scry with my third eye. Something beginning with...V...Police patrolling the parks for people in numbers of more than two. Partners in masks, holding hands in gloves and everyone suddenly vulnerable, unable to gather in packs and gain vicarious strength. Droplets on breath, float and melt into eyes and everybody keeping their distance now paranoia is no longer irrational but sensible. Hello, hope you are doing okay.
This crisis will bring out ALL the best and the worst in people, in both selfless and panic based behaviour. The imminence of a possible bad death or infecting one you love can focus the mind wonderfully on what truly matters to the individual. Adults and children are dying independent of age and previous health status or racial characteristics, remorseless and random. The chaos plague in action and it is mutating. So let's have some lively imature comedy before we get deadly serious.
There are many who will use this situation for political ends and many rabid Endtimers of apocalypse who will be rejoicing somehow that Christ will soon return and save his flock of sheep. Two recent quotes direct from Trump's twitter; 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord' (Matthew 21:1) Well...'Oh God!' is what millions cry in orgasm. 'But the Lord watches over those who fear Him, those who rely on His unfailing love'. (Psalm 33) Really? How many God fearing Christians have died so far and in all the previous plagues?  As one American (or maybe hacked by Russia) site says;  'You can't hold hands with God when you are masturbating'. In other words Donald, if you are a wanker you will not get into Heaven. But I digress...
And other fundamentalists who have yet to notice that the virus is killing everyone from all groups, not just those who disagree with them. Kick them hard between the legs if they say this within earshot of you. Hard enough to stop them breeding. (Sidenote... nice to hear that many more pregnancies than normal have been logged over the last few weeks...folk staying at home with nothing better to do and subconsciously wanting to keep the population up. Arf. It is already up. 66.44 million people in the UK (of which England is 56 million)and the UK annual deathrate has been 9382 for the last five years.) Coming and going in the name of the Lord, hallelujah and pass the holy blood...
There were some people at the start of this, a doctor, a couple of journalists who started to warn about Covid 19 in December/January. They were quickly removed by the communists. The world could have had an extra five weeks to prepare and take measures. Hopefully many countries, if unable to actually sue the Chinese government for being totalitarian swine (and why not - Loss of earnings, cause of mass death, covering up facts and lying to health organisations) then the least we can all do is to stop buying ANYTHING from China. Check the labels first. The West has been outrageous in its kow-towing to a regime that machine gunned its own children from tanks, uses unwilling organ donors, transportse ethnicities of Tibetans and Muslim communities to ‘re-education’ camps. WE should have been ashamed. Now we should be angry. BOYCOTT CHINESE GOODS FOR ONE YEAR, GET THE COMMUNISTS OUT.
Speaking of which, the ‘British’ deal with Huawei...giving even the crack of a possibility that a nation with such serious issues with ‘freedom’ and murder of its own citizens should be in charge of Britain’s infrastructure for information and hospitals and surveillance and....Well...it seems...how to put this...f..ing stupid. Done only in order to ensure more investment by China in our shrinking economy. ‘When China sneezes, the world catches a cold’...the markets certainly are. But sellers of respiratory face masks made in guess where are doing well. Well you know everything is made in China...
Globally, right now, we seem to have the worst possible leaders in charge for this crisis. The weakest, craziest and the most despotic (very often all in one). China, with mass interests in Africa and South America has sold the media line that the virus is an American creation to protect their newest client base. And every single damn time Trump opens his mouth, he just makes everybody on the planet who did not vote for him, all the less likely to believe a word. Or even that he exists.
Horrible to see Michael Gove praising the medical staff in Britain for working their hearts out during this crises. He was one of the Tory MPs who voted against giving nurses a small pay rise in 2017. All but one did so, and when the vote was 'won' , the Conservatives let out a loud cheer. They cheered. Cheering now boys and girls? Many thousands of Labour supporters voted Tory in December simply because Corbyn is pointless as pointless can be and the Stalinist Momentum group trying to take over the party are bloody dangerous. I will never be a Socialist but I would truly like to hear why the posh rich boys thought it unnecessary to give a little bonus to nurses and why the bastards cheered. Unforgivable.
Boris taking cold revenge on the BBC for having had the temerity to ask him impertinent, salient questions in December...by decriminalising not paying the license fee. Succumbs to the virus after having taken three days to even organise a COBRA meeting of the highest and then shilly shallying for several weeks longer before acting to lock down the city. Enough time for the shops to be emptied in fear because Britain chose to be self isolating before Covid 19 was even known about. Anti bacterial soap stolen from hospitals. How many readers saw the photographs of the London underground the Friday after its Lord Mayor begged the public to stay home? Packed. Five percent in masks. Hoards of idiots at weekends getting drunk in London and the USA. ‘It’s only the old and weak who die’. No it isn’t. By no means are all those dying are old and previously ill.
This is what happens in various (if not most) countries, when the masses are not educated to cogitate for themselves. Governments neither need nor want the majority to be clever and ask questions at any point. They need basic workers, such as the ESSENTIAL WORKERS these days...easy to spot, they are the ones being paid the least amount of money) The masses are disallowed genuine opportunites to make money and keep it without being taxed at every turn. These two things result in vast populations who have been educated to be less than intelligent and millions who cannot afford to stop work and self isolate for a couple of months. They don’t have private health schemes, stocks and shares, a rich daddy or friends, family jewellery , a second car to sell or gold bullion in Switzerland. They have what they do daily, to make them money and pay bills and rent. Many of the poorest in numerous countries, live with their parents and grandparents. No real alternative but to work, mix and bring the virus home.
What would be wonderful would be if the landlords, big bosses and bankers (who, well...appear to have quite a lot of moolah) would say, ‘okay...you know what...no need to pay rent for two or three months and perhaps there is no work to be done but I won’t lay anyone off or count this as sick leave’. How f..ing likely is that to happen? There will be a few who will do the right thing. The rest will remain as the bastards as they always were. May the Devil take them.
And as for the hackers blackmailing hospitals...when they are caught, strip them, parade and flog them till bloody, and then put them away for Life without parole. At the very least. I would turn them loose in a crowd of those they had caused pain to. The same goes for any leader who had given them orders.
And ooh, ahh...the deadly serious internet conspiracy...apparently Bill Gates is acting like Thanos or a James Bond villain but without the charm and sense of humour. If this virus had been created by Man deliberately, there would already have been a vaccine somewhere. Perhaps there is. If you really are a nut, then watch where the cure seems to originate from and trace it backwards. And which of the ' Elite' refuse to have the jab. Interesting to think how long the Chinese (or anyone for that matter) have been eating bats and only now does this spring up. Yum yum. Yab Yab.
To quote from the master again..’Conspiracy is contagious and so is worrying about it. At such time, theories about totally imaginary conspiracies also escalate, because (a) times of transition make people nervous and uncertain, (b) nervous and uncertain people tend to become at least a little bit paranoid, (c) most people most of the time follow their own prejudices and anxieties much more than any technique for ascertaining objective facts, and (d) most people have no knowledge of the techniques or self –disciplines necessary to the search for objective facts.Robert Anton Wilson, Right Where you are Sitting Now. (Ronin Publishing)
Meanwhile...John von Neumann’s game theory continues to be used in global warfare scenarios...they are still attempting to overcome the odds against negative outcomes...More satellites fired upwards, planning to use EMP to disable the enemy’s networks before they do the same. Peace and goodwill to all, Amen...AI Terminators building the Matrix etc.
But I remember some time in 1997 after five years of various daily practices in England and Czech Republic, a sudden moment in the countryside walking down a small valley...having an absolute instinct that humans would never be strong enough to destroy this world. Simultaneously there was a sure and clear feeling that I no longer lived in the time stream of a world which would be annihilated by nuclear war. Through my baby steps towards tiny pulses of enlightenment, I had stepped across to a parallel world. Breaching a strange loop in a 'quantum-jump to a different order of coherence.' (Identical, but not one in which such insanity would happen...)
Twenty three years later after dropping many of the disciplines I had used in the Nineties and getting caught up in the horseshit of trump and such others - and my own failing mental health, I seem to have crossed back over into a world which is worse on many levels. There were flashes back then, revolutions without bloodshed, with dialogue, and agreements (even if based on trade and power sharing) but step by step, what I call the Conspiracy of Counter Evolution (Neophobes) struck back at the possibility that humans could do the right thing. Dragging the masses back into petty squabbles and bloodshed based on the three main (as they like to see themselves) religions and the eternal struggle for resources. Of which there are plenty for quite a few hundred generations yet, as long as we stop eating bats and don't allow the fundamentalists to wipe us out in the name of a merciful God. Nationalism and Religion are the perfect illusions with which to rule and dominate the gullible through fear, unprovable promises and selfish pride. And resources are mace to look limited and endangered in order to drive prices up. Fear, as was said, is big business.
‘Don’t associate with people who have a low view of humanity; it’ll give you a low view of yourself’ Mark Twain. And thus I remain cynically optimystic.
Did you know that 10 hours exposure to low doses of ketamine ‘enhances corticostriatal cross frequency coupling and hippocampal broad band gamma oscillation’...? Useful to know eh? Many things have the same effect without resorting to horse tranquiliser...like focusing on changing brain speed via breathing. He says on Codeine, whisky and Tramadol. And no doubt burning out all the couplings between the trains of thought but only last night. You will ‘be right there’? I will be wrong here.
I recently had a dream where I had set up a solo concert, all equipment ready, tuned strings, prepared gear etc, then on stage an hour before the start, realised I had forgotten to invite anyone...Hmm...Two more quotes...

UK plans new law aimed at improving Internet of Things security
The U.K. government is proposing new legislation aimed at improving security of Internet of Things devices.
Digital minister Margot James MP revealed the draft law on Wednesday as part of the government’s efforts to protect millions of internet-connected devices from cyberattacks.
The law will mandate that internet-connected devices, like smart thermostats, appliances and webcams, must be sold with a unique password.
Botnets typically rely on default passwords that are hardcoded into devices when they’re built that aren’t later changed by the user. By selling a device with a unique password, it significantly slows down cybercriminals from scanning the internet and automatically logging into devices with a default password, often to launch distributed denial-of-service attacks.
On a massive scale, botnets operating thousands of hijacked Internet of Things devices entire websites offline. Two years ago, the Mirai botnet briefly downed Dyn, a networking company that provides domain name service to major sites. That outage knocked dozens of major sites offline — like Twitter, Spotify and SoundCloud.
The new U.K. law will also mandate device makers to provide a public point of contact to allow hackers and security researchers submit flaws and vulnerabilities.
And device makers will have to tell consumers for how long each device will receive security updates.
The law, if passed, would create a labeling scheme for consumers to easily see devices that are “Secure by Design,” said James, giving consumers greater confidence that the devices land with a baseline level of security out of the box.
“Many consumer products that are connected to the internet are often found to be insecure, putting consumers privacy and security at risk,” said James. “Our code of practice was the first step towards making sure that products have security features built in from the design stage and not bolted on as an afterthought.”
The U.K. is following in the footsteps of California, which in October passed a law banning default passwords in connected devices. The law will come into effect in 2020. Each device sold in the state must come with a password “unique to each device.”
Ken Munro, founder of security firm Pen Test Partners, said in a blog post that the proposed law was a “great start,” but the new rules were a “fairly light touch.”
His company finds security flaws in internet-connected devices like car alarms and other consumer goods.
“We hope that the government will also commit to a program of continual improvement of smart product security,” he said.

Is Prince Harry right on Fortnite ban?
Tumblr media

Image caption The Duke of Sussex has spoken at length about the issue of mental health
Prince Harry has called for a ban on Fortnite, saying the survival game beloved by teenagers around the world, was “created to addict”.
His words add to a growing debate among health workers, governments and lobby groups about whether gaming can be harmful to health.
The remarks come just before the Gaming Bafta Awards, one of the biggest nights in the UK’s gaming calendar, which take place in London on Thursday evening.
But is he right?
What did Prince Harry say?
At an event at a YMCA in west London, the Duke of Sussex launched a scathing attack on social media and gaming.
Of Fortnite, he said: “That game shouldn’t be allowed. Where is the benefit of having it in your household?
“It’s created to addict, an addiction to keep you in front of a computer for as long as possible. It’s so irresponsible.
“It’s like waiting for the damage to be done and kids turning up on your doorsteps and families being broken down.”
He added that social media was “more addictive than alcohol and drugs”.
What is Fortnite?
Tumblr media

The game has become a global phenomenon and the aim is simple – survive for as long as possible. Each match has a total of 99 other players with the same goals and lasts around 20 minutes, depending on how successful you are.
It has 200 million registered players worldwide and is free to download, but players can spend money on in-game purchases.
Players can play alone, as part of a four-person squad or a 20-member team, either with friends or people they do not know.
What do doctors think?
Earlier this month, a GP told an 11-year-old boy that he was “prescribing” a two-week ban from computer games such as Fortnite and Minecraft.
Dr Amir Khan said that he was concerned about the impact gaming was having on the boy’s life.
It was a light-hearted attempt to draw attention to a serious issue but, anecdotally, more doctors are seeing links between gaming and effects on both the physical and mental health of young people.
And it is not only youngsters who are affected. Research shows that 200 divorces in the UK from January to September 2018 mentioned addiction to Fortnite and other online games as one of the reasons for relationship breakdown.
However, Scottish university researcher Andrew Reid said he thought that the game was not “addictive” and suggested that using the term could stigmatise regular video game players. He added that some research showed “positive characteristics of play”.
What do the gamers say about addiction?
There are plenty of gamers who play for long periods of time and say it has no impact on their wider social lives or health.
But some have had enough.
Matus Mikus joined Game Quitters, an online forum made up of thousands of people who have turned their backs on games, after his relationship broke down because he was spending too much time gaming.
‘I ignored my children to play video games’
The secret world of Fortnite hackers
Fortnite: The world-famous game that’s never topped the charts
James Good is a self-confessed gaming addict, once spending 32 hours playing without a break. The problem led to him falling behind at university.
“My grades were slipping as a result of playing too many games. I didn’t eat, sleep or leave my room. I escaped my problems via games,” he recently told a group of MPs.
And he said the effect of playing was triggering physical responses.
Tumblr media

Image caption There are an estimated 32.4 million gamers in the UK.
“Games fire up response systems in your brain and other things don’t bring you as much joy,” he told the MPs.
“I was thinking, ‘Why would I spend time with my friends when I can play video games?’.
“It felt good to get points, trophies, beat people. It fuelled my competitiveness – but I realised I wasn’t truly happy.”
James admits he became depressed, but stopped short of saying that gaming was the root cause.
He added that gaming as a teenager was not a problem, because he combined it with an active life, playing sports and going to Scouts, and his parents helped him manage his time.
Being without parental guidance at university appears to be the trigger that turned his gaming from a much-loved activity to an obsession.
He too turned to Game Quitters and admits to having withdrawal symptoms when he followed its challenge for new members to give up gaming for 90 days.
“I was getting headaches, moods and I had to lock my computer in a cupboard,” he said.
What’s the view of the games firms?
The BBC has asked Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, for comment but has not yet had a response.
Gaming is booming and the UK games industry is worth a record £5.7bn, in part thanks to Fortnite, according to new figures from gaming trades body Ukie, which said that there was “little evidence” gaming causes harm to health.
Dr Jo Twist, Ukie’s chief executive and chairwoman of Bafta Games, said: “We care about players.
“We want to help parents and carers who don’t play games themselves to feel better equipped and knowledgeable about safe and responsible game play, and the positive impact games can have on people’s lives.”
She added that game age ratings “should be taken seriously” and that parents and carers should use online resources to ensure their children played in a responsible way.
Ukie points to research conducted by Prof Andrew Przybylski, an experimental psychologist at the Oxford Internet Institute, who has said that only 0.3% of gamers might experience problems controlling the time they spend playing video games.
He told the BBC: Large scale research studies on the topic indicate that games may not be inherently addictive and should best be thought of as a coping mechanism for, rather than cause of, mental distress. Placing undue blame on games risks stigmatising a popular hobby regularly pursued by nearly two billion people.”
The World Health Organization disagrees and last year recognised excessive gaming as a mental health disorder.
Does gaming need greater government scrutiny?
Tumblr media

The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee is currently interviewing gamers, games firms and other experts as part of its ongoing inquiry into technology addiction.
It is due to report back on its findings later this year. Chairman Damian Collins told the BBC ahead of that: “We have invited Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, to give evidence to our investigation, which is examining the addictive nature of gaming, as well as links between gaming and gambling.
“We hope that Epic will accept our invitation. We will certainly raise with them the significant concerns that Prince Harry has expressed about Fortnite, and how they respond to his call for it to be banned.”
And it is not just the UK that is looking into the links between gaming and the health of youngsters.
China, the world’s largest gaming market, is increasingly concerned about addiction and the impact of gaming on children’s eyesight, and has taken strong measures to crack down on the issue.
China’s tech giant Tencent has tightened checks on the age of people playing online games – checking identities and ages against a police database.
Children under 12 are only able to play for an hour a day. Older children can play for up to two hours, but not during a night-time curfew.

HOME VIDEO POLITICS US WORLD ENTERTAINMENT SPORTS BUSINESS OPINION OUTDOORS SHOP ISSUES SEND A TIP WEBSITE LABELED ‘FAKE NEWS’ THREATENS TO SUE WAPO FOR DEFAMATION 1:08 PM 12/05/2016 | US Rachel Stoltzfoos | Managing Editor, The Daily Caller News Foundation Play Video One of the websites The Washington Post labeled “fake news” in a November story demanded a retraction and threatened the paper with a defamation lawsuit in a demand letter Sunday. A lawyer for Naked Capitalism accuses WaPo of running a debunked list of “fake news” sites in the “sensational” story compiled by a dubious team of researchers, without substantiating their claims or giving Naked Capitalism a chance to respond to the allegation. The Washington Post’s actions constitute defamation, the lawyer writes in the letter published Monday. “You did not provide even a single example of ‘fake news’ allegedly distributed or promoted by Naked Capitalism or indeed any of the 200 sites on the PropOrNot blacklist,” James A. Moody writes. “You provided no discussion or assessment of the credentials or backgrounds of these so-called ‘researchers’ (Clint Watts, Andrew Weisburd, and J.M. Berger and the ‘team’ at PropOrNot), and no discussion or analysis of the methodology, protocol or algorithms such ‘researchers’ may or may not have followed.” Naked Capitalism is a finance and economics blog started in December 2006, with a stated goal of “shedding light on the dark and seamy corners of finance.” Moody demands a retraction of the story and a public apology from WaPo in the letter, threatening a suit if the paper does not comply. He lists a series of damages to the site itself, as well as the writers and editors associated with the site; these include “ridicule, emotional distress, loss of reputation, and risk to future career advancement” for writers and editors. Other mainstream news outlets criticize The Washington Post for running the story. “The organization’s anonymity, which a spokesperson maintained was due to fear of Russian hackers, added a cybersexy mystique,” Adrian Chen wrote in The New Yorker regarding the WaPo story. “But a close look at the report showed that it was a mess.” And Patrick Maines criticized the story in The Hill, calling it “perhaps the shoddiest piece of feature writing since Rolling Stone published its blatantly false story about a campus rape at the University of Virginia.” “You have made damaging false accusations against Naked Capitalism,” Moody concludes in the letter. “Please immediately remove these from the web and provide an equivalent opportunity to respond. Modern AU: In which Thomas, Miranda, and James are outed to the press.
I wanted to start reccing fic more (this goshdarn talented fandom-!), so I'm starting off with a superb Black Sails modern day AU: You Can't Handle The Truth. It's a beautifully written and intriguing political, crime, and legal drama, backed up with dense world building. Miranda's POV is magnificent - she’s incredibly nuanced and complicated, and so elegantly realized. I could write love letters to all of the characters and their excellent characterization - to Thomas, to John, to Madi, to James, to Max, to Anne, to Jack - each of them rich and complex, with their own idiosyncrasies.
You Can’t Handle The Truth grabs you from the very beginning and never lets up, and it is a thrill watching the story unfold, as the stakes get higher and higher. The parallels, twists, and homages to the characters' story arcs in Black Sails is just masterfully done. An absolutely addictive and captivating read.

Hackers -  a devil’s advocate post
20 November 2018
Hackers like to think they are underdogs, misunderstood, misrepresented. But is that the truth these days? I searched the term ‘hackers’ on google, and I had to wade through three pages of results until I found a negative hacking article. It seems that hackers have rebranded. The stereotypical hacker of male, nerdy, arrogantly smart, anti-social, has been replaced with hacker 2.0. It is all ethical hacking now, hackers using their powers for good. Look up ethical hacking and you will find businesses trying to sell you ethical hacking courses, training, even certification.
Tumblr media
At best, hackers are anonymous bullies, who can wield incredible power and leverage vindictive backlash. What's wrong? Can't you take a joke? You asked for it. At worst they can disrupt whole systems, governments, and possibly even elections? The truth to election hacking may never be known, but it is clear that hackers have the potential to collude with regimes to influence political agendas.
Tumblr media
If hackers are all good then who is responsible for cyber attacks? Data breaches? Who is creating and spreading malware and ransomware? In May 2017, WannaCry brought the NHS to its knees, the healthcare of individuals was collateral damage in pursuit of bitcoin.
In an article by Gross (1), James Lewis of the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates the cost of cybercrime worldwide in 2017 at $500bn, which translates as 0.8% of global GDP. He estimates that “computer and Internet users face 80 billion malicious scans each day.” He also estimates that  “there are 33,000 phishing attacks and 4,000 ransomware daily, with about 780,000 records lost to hacking.”
Closer to home, a report by Price Waterhouse Cooper (2) finds that cybercrime is the most common type of economic crime experienced in Ireland, representing 61% of economic crimes reported in 2017. This is up from 44% in 2016, and is almost double the global rate. Phishing and malware were the main methods of cybercrime experienced. The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2020, $3tn a year will be lost to cybercrime (3):
youtube

And it doesn’t even need to be financially motivated. The Mirai botnet attack in 2016 is rumoured to have been started by teens looking to prank Minecraft users. This malware was spread through cctv cameras and DVR recorders (4). The more technology changes, the more opportunities for exploitation. The Internet of Things has opened up new channels for hackers. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies seem tailor-made for cybercriminals (5).
But it’s the user’s fault for not keeping their security up to date. This sounds like victim blaming to me.
The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre claims that most cyberattacks are carried out by “state-sponsored hackers employed by hostile nations” (6). Similarly sensational headlines are becoming a global common theme. It is hard to know who to believe. Research for this piece found many articles quoting facts on the threat of cyberattacks, but scroll down and most of them are written by security companies. Cybersecurity is big business so they may not be entirely impartial.
However it comes down to one question – if hackers are ethical and trustworthy, are you willing to leave your devices unprotected?

Wi-Fi Information Guide
Wireless: To Be, Or Not To Be? That Is The Question Facing Schools Across The Country.
There has been a lot of hype in the media about concerns wireless Internet connections (Wi-Fi) are harming children. But is there a basis to these concerns, or are these fears unwarranted?
Probably the most concerning information to come out of these stories is that these wireless connections emit radiation with a similar frequency to microwaves and mobile phones. And that fact has got people worried that it might cause cancer, brain damage and heart disease, not to mention headaches, fatigue, nausea, dizziness and memory problems in the short term.
A BBC Panorama investigation caused panic when they claimed that the radio frequency radiation levels of some classes that have Wi-Fi connections are up to three times more intense than the levels found in the main beam of intensity of mobile phone masts. However, The Guardian then quoted various scientists who refuted this claim, and essentially discredited the investigation.
BBC News reported that while the heating effects of high exposure to electromagnetic radiation could be damaging, mobile phones and microwave ovens have a much higher power level than wireless connections. The report then pointed out that there is no evidence that suggests electromagnetic radiation at radio frequencies has any impact on health when the energy levels are at such low levels. In other words, there is no proof that Wi-Fi connections are bad for our health.
In fact, The Times stated that a wireless-connected classroom in Norwich was tested, and the levels of radiation were found to be 600 times lower than the levels considered dangerous by the Government. The classroom was tested using the International Commission’s NonIonizing Radiation Protection processes, which determines how strong radiation is based on how much heat is produced. Do the negative arguments stand-up?
Despite the articles above, Sir William Stewart, the chairman of the Health Protection Agency who pointed out in 2000 that mobiles phones could be detrimental to people’s health, has been quoted in a number of newspapers warning of the potential dangers of Wi-Fi technology. He has issued a plea that students who come in regular contact with Wi-Fi technology should be monitored for any ill effects.
Labour MP Ian Gibson, who was interviewed by Sir William Stewart for an upcoming programme, backed the statements made by Sir William Stewart, and called for an official inquiry into Wi-Fi connections. Gibson is MP for Norwich, a city that has recently been set up as a wireless city.
These sentiments have been echoed by Mike Bell, chairman of the Electromagnetic Radiation Research Trust; Alasdair Philips, director of Powerwatch, an information service; and the Professional Association of Teachers, whom are currently pressuring Education Secretary Alan Johnson to call for one such inquiry.
Dr Olle Johansson of Karolinska Institute in Sweden has been studying radiation similar to that being given off by wireless connections and found there are biological implications. However, when he was asked if it was right to limit Wi-Fi usage based on thermal effect, he refuted the idea.
The Government believe the technology is perfectly safe, taking the advice from the World Health Organisation, and have not yet set up any official inquiry. Are our children safe?
One of the greatest concerns is that of our children. Children are more vulnerable to radiation because their skulls are thinner and their nervous systems are still developing and because they will be exposed to more of this radiation during their lives.
Although there is no evidence yet supporting the notion that wireless connections emit harmful radiation, the thought that children may be exposed to dangerous radiation, especially considering how many schools use the technology, has some parents up in arms.
The Independent newspaper reported that according to some estimates, more than half England’s primary schools, and about four-fifths of their secondary schools, have Wi-Fi technology installed.
In several European countries, provincial governments have banned or limited the use of wireless technology in their schools. And back home in Britain, Stowe school has removed part of their Wi-Fi technology after a teacher began having headaches and nausea as soon as it was installed.
However there is a chance this teacher was just “electrosensitive”, a condition that affects three out of one hundred people according to the World Health Organisation.
In addition to this theory, James Rubin from the Institute of Psychiatry has stated that people can develop headaches if they believe such technology gives people headaches, even if the signal is not present. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Wi-Fi Internet Connections? Advantages of Wi-Fi
The main advantage of Wi-Fi is users can connect to the Internet without being plugged in. As long as the computers are within range of a host network, users can log on to this network from anywhere.
What this means is that students can be outside, or in areas where cables cannot run, and still be able to use the Internet.
In addition, in some circumstances Wi-Fi can be cheaper to set-up and expand than a cabled network, especially as many Laptop or Notebook computers now come with inbuilt wireless technology. Disadvantages of Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi connections can be unreliable, especially when working at a distance from a base station as the signal strength drops. Technology with similar frequencies, like mobiles and microwaves, can disrupt the connection, which means students may be disconnected from the Internet, or at least the speed of the Internet will be greatly minimised.
Browsing and downloading speeds can also be much slower than a cabled connection simply because the speed of the Wi-Fi device is slower.
Wi-Fi networks in schools are made to be easy for students to connect to, but by making them easy for the school children to log on, they also make it easy for Internet hackers. These hackers can put viruses onto the schools network and the computers logged onto the network, and they can also steal information from student’s and school computers logged onto the Wi-Fi server.
Finally, battery life is minimised because of the extra power needed to connect to the network and Internet without cables. Final Verdict
BBC News reminded the public of Karl Popper, one of the great philosophers of science, who said science is about falsification. You can prove theories and hypothesis are incorrect, but you can never prove they are correct. So, theories are innocent until proven guilty. And with no hard evidence to suggest wireless technology does negatively affect our health and the health of our children, the technology can only be considered safe.
Further to this, BBC News pointed out that the television and radio modulated frequencies that come into our homes are just as powerful as Wi-Fi technology. If the journalists were so worried about the negative effects of Wi-Fi, should they also be worried about the effects of their own medium.
However, the “fact” is that when it comes to children many parents and school staff will be concerned about the potential effects of the “electronic smog” created by Wi-Fi and will choose to play it safe by minimising, or even eliminating, the use of Wi-Fi within schools until more hard evidence is available.
And while there are many other advantages for using cable technology over wireless (see the ‘What are the advantages and disadvantages of Wi-Fi Internet Connections?’ section), perhaps schools should be using cabling over wireless technology even if it is in theory perfectly safe.
