Black sails Reddit is so wild “Flint didn’t deserve a peaceful end he was a manipulative liar who indiscriminately killed anyone in his path” ok and. He’s literally a pirate and England was being homophobic what else was he supposed to do. In fact he could’ve been worse and I still would’ve cheered

[image description: a fake romance novel cover, featuring a still from Black Sails. Flint has Silver dramatically pinned against a boulder at the wrecks, gripping Silver's shirt with one hand and holding a knife to his throat with the other. a red banner at the top of the cover has the book's title and author attribution—The Captain's Treasured Chest by Jon Steinberg & Robert Levine. written in the bottom left corner, overlaying the still, is the book's tagline: "Swords clash when a mysterious rogue steals a pirate captain's page... and his heart!" end id]

They really went to Toby Stephens and said, “We’re imagining the saddest man—completely regret ridden, absolutely terrified of his own passions, but also weirdly “dark nautical” in theme.
And Toby Stephens went, “That’s actually kind of my specialty.”

Tell me your James Flint take. Why is everybody wrong?
A lot of people seem to buy into what he's selling and ignore the fact that he's a giant liar liar pants on fire about who he is and what he wants and what he's trying to do.
Like, exhibit A: he wants a stable Nassau that can self-govern, right? He'll retreat to the interior after that? WRONG. Pretty much every chance he has to establish that, he does not take it. Compromise with Vane or destroy the fort that they need to defend themselves? Cannon time. Oh my army just quadrupled in size, should we go take back Nassau now that the Spanish have left and it'd be really easy? Nah let's sack Boston!! If Thomas knew how close we were to victory he would want me to keep going--would he?? War against the empire wasn't Thomas's goal!!
He might have genuinely believed Silver and Madi would be the best leaders of a free Nassau but I don't think he'd have ever gotten to a point where he thought it was stable enough for him to leave. There would always be another fight, another defense, another person who's wrong and only Flint can fix it.
"A man casts his vote for the same reason he does anything else. Because it feels good." Ultimately I think this is what a lot of Flint comes back to. He's sad and angry and violence feels good and power feels good. I think he thinks he wants what he says he wants, but he'd never have been able to get there: I mean you look at his dragons in the darkness speech, which is 1000/10 monologue of all time, but you know what it DOESN'T include? The Maroons.
He spun this fight as 'people whose lives were ruined by the empire take things back' and I think he thought he meant it. I think his connection with Madi was real. But when push came to shove, when his best friend situationship was pointing a gun at him, it wasn't 'the Maroons have sacrificed so much for this fight and deserve more of a say', it wasn't 'slavery is horrible and so are press gangs,' it was we will have been for nothing. Defined by their histories.
In the end all it was was how he felt about it.
