Christmas on Cherry Lane (2023)

We have another Hallmark movie that is available on Netflix until the end of the month! I usually prefer to find stills from the movie, but I had to go with the cover art for this one because it's the only time all of our central characters are in the same place at the same time. This is a fun story of a house, 7 Cherry Lane to be exact, and the various families and their Christmases in the house. We have one from 1973, one from 1999, and one from 2023. They are interspersed throughout the film, but there are connections between them. For the sake of ease, we'll go in chronological order.

In 1973, Lizzie Hamilton (Erin Cahill) and John Hamilton (John Brotherton) are spending their second day in their new home decorating because it's also Christmas Eve and they want a quiet Christmas as Lizzie is two weeks out from her due date. Things become less quiet when Lizzie's mom Evelyn Sawyer (Lynda Boyd) and dad Frank Sawyer (Fred Henderson) show up unannounced and declare that they are staying for Christmas and have also invited Lizzie's brother Brett Sawyer (James Kot) who will come with his wife Olivia (Katherine Isabelle) and their son Peter (Ezra Wilson) and Lizzie's sister Vicky Baker (Darby Steeves) and her husband Steve (Julian Haig). Things go even more awry when John's shop gets broken into and he has to leave to meet Officer Greg Johnston (Garrett Black) during the blizzard to take care of it.

In 1999, Conrad Johnston (Matthias Falvai) and his sister Winnie (Veronica Long) arrive at their childhood home to have Christmas with their widowed mom Regina (Catherine Bell) and her fiancé Nelson (James Denton). However, when Conrad and Winnie find out that once they are married, Regina and Nelson plan to sell the house and retire to Florida, they get very upset. Conrad tries to relive their childhood memories that they had with their father to try to change Regina's mind, but Regina sees through this pretty quickly and loses patience for it when it interferes with her cooking. Conrad leaves to meet his friend Ivy (Eva Tavares) who is preparing to take in a foster child on Christmas Eve.

In 2023, Mike Harrelson (Jonathon Bennett) and his husband Zian Harrelson (Vincent Rodriguez III) are trying to plan a Christmas Eve dinner party, but the kitchen remodel is taking longer than expected and the contractor Quinn Lewis (Robert Moloney) doesn't seem to understand the urgency that Mike is feeling. Things go even further awry when Mike and Zian find out that they are getting a foster placement that night and Quinn blows a fuse and has to call an electrician. Mike decides to just cook the dinner at the restaurant he works at with the help of a kind neighbor Daisy (Brandi Alexander) but Mike runs into car trouble and a storm has hit the town, so now he is stuck at the restaurant with Daisy. Daisy does show up in every plot line, but this is the one where she is the most present. Also, props to hair and makeup because in 1973, she's in college, so by 2023, she's about 70, and it's all the same actress.

I love a good parallel plot line that is ultimately connected by some random thread. There are characters that appear in two of the plot lines, Ivy, Winnie, and Zian. But neighbor Daisy is in all three. This was a fun one that really celebrates people. I very much enjoyed it. Overall, 4 stars.

Disney's post-Renaissance: An alternate Timeline

Round 3 of my alternate universes involving Disney eras. I should note, though: given that I made the AU for the revival era first, it exists independent of my AUs for the renaissance and post-renaissance eras, which exist together here. BE WARNED: as someone who lived during this era, it's one I am not a big fan of, so I'm making a bunch of changes based on my own opinion; while the renaissance era AU had additions, the post-renaissance AU has deletions/replacements.

Fantasia 2000--The film turns out the same as it did in the OG timeline (perhaps better box office, though), but in this version, the animation style for "The Firebird Suite" leaves an immediate impact on audiences.

Kingdom of the Sun--In this AU, "Pocahontas" (named "Amonute" in my AU) had more financial returns and the screening of KOTS had better audience feedback, so the concern of a serious, ambitious film wasn't a problem for Disney--though they did replace Huaca with Kronk for some light-heartedness. Despite all odds, Disney is able to crank out an original Incan musical epic. A spoiled king trades places with a lookalike peasant, but when the king is kidnapped and the peasant is blackmailed by the royal vizier to become a figurehead for her to rule through, they must get help from a kindhearted noblewoman and a tough female guard. If they fail, the kingdom could very well become the Kingdom of the Shadows. While the casting of non-Indigenous or Latino actors did earn some negative press (unless you want to imagine that they made this a priority to cast Latino actors), the film received overall praise and comparisons to renaissance-era films which hadn't been seen for a little while now. The film grossed roughly $400 million at the box office and gained positive critical reception, with a sequel series focusing on more twin hijinks, and Yzma's nephews Zim and Zam are used a bit more to balance them out. The king (called Manco) and his love interest join the Disney Princess/Disney Prince lineup.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire--Due to the success of "Kingdom of the Sun," "Atlantis" was retooled in two ways: it was to be made a musical, and more focus would be put on the magical aspects of Atlantis instead of the technology aspects. Needless to say, this caused quite a bit of ruckus in production one year out, but they pulled through with $350 million at the box office and received a sequel direct-to-video film shortly after. Kida and Milo joined the DP lineup, but James Arnold Taylor dubs most of Milo's subsequent appearances. That said, it was surmised that the film might've made more had it been 3D, given the growing demand for the style.

Lilo & Stitch--Mostly the same, but Nani and Lilo's relationship gets more attention (in the OG film, it was important, but the B-story to Lilo and Stitch's relationship), as well as more Disney references and appearances as shown via the parody trailers. The latter detail set the stage for the cameos in "Ralph Wrecks the Internet." The film meets roughly the same success, but it gains a little bit more thanks to previous films being more successful.

Treasure Planet--Mostly the same, but a crucial change is made. Given the ambition the film had already with it's story and plans to combine 2D and 3D animation, the developers noted the change in atmosphere in the animation landscape (notably with the feedback from "Atlantis") and decided to make the film completely 3D instead. While this disappoints some fans, it's financially a smarter decision, making $300 million at the box office and Disney greenlighting a straight-to-DVD sequel (and a rumored TV series that never materialized).

Brother Bear--Given that "The Lion King" is with humans in this AU and "Amonute" got more praise, CEO Michael Eisner suggested a combination of the films, making another Native American musical and using animal motifs. Seeing how all their musicals had been 2D up to now, this art style was kept to not risk losing the core audience. Noting the positive feedback of the sibling relationships in "Kingdom of the Sun" and "Lilo & Stitch," they push forward with a story about three brothers who go on a journey for Kenai, the youngest, to discover his true self after being bestowed a bear totem, which he attributes to being a premonition of a poor future. In a flip to the common trope of female leads being able to speak with animals, once the brothers receive their totems, they are able to do so as well--except for Kenai, who vehemently resents and rejects his totem. The film grosses over $350 million with praise for it's depiction of Native American culture, though there was concern about the use of spirit animals being misconstrued.

Rumpelstiltskin--In 2004, Disney released a powerful tale of motherhood, focusing on a young queen named Aurelia who finds her fairy tale happy ending thanks to her ability to spin straw into gold and save the kingdom from poverty. However, things go awry when a clever warlock appears and reveals that the queen isn't as graceful, clever, or skillfull as she had pretended, as he had helped her gain the king's favor, and now was taking their child as payment for it. Paying homage to classic Disney films (the animation style and storytelling is reminiscent of "Sleeping Beauty,"), the musical concerns Aurelia racing to find this creature who stole her child, as well as the name that could banish him once and for all. The film has been labeled "twisted Disney" due to Rumpelstiltskin changing his form to several darker versions of iconic Disney characters. Like with "Beauty and the Beast" (in my AU), they took influence from the film "Labyrinth," with the writers for the film researching child abduction for a more authentic and moving piece. The film's darkness made it a dark horse at the box office, grossing similar numbers to the other musicals, though it's still viewed as underrated; Aurelia was originally placed within the Disney princess line, but subsequently removed due to her physical similarities to Princess Aurora and their similar names, as well as the fact that Aurelia was a queen and controversially referred to as "too old" to join the line (both points are a source of contention among fans).

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe--Released in 2005 and sometimes just marketed as "Narnia," Disney had been inspired to make the film following the success of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," though they originally planned to relocate the film to America instead of England, which eventually fizzled out. The animation style is heavily influenced by the animation style for "The Firebird Suite" from "Fantasia 2000" in order to truly transport the audience. The film plays off mostly the same as the OG timeline with similar figures (and let's assume the OG cast was re-used, with singing voices when needed; it was mostly the magical creatures who sang in the film to give Narnia a fairy tale vibe while the Pevensies were "real" people), becoming somewhat of a phenomenon thanks to it's large box office and nostalgia for fans of the book. Jadis was seen as a blueprint for Elsa later on, and Lucy was seen as too young to join the Disney princess line.

Tam Lin--Released in 2006, Disney made a musical based on the folktale "Tam Lin," about a young woman who vows to rescue a man from the queen of the fairies. Given that the subject matter was similar to "Rumpelstiltskin" and this was their FOURTH musical in a row, Disney was concerned about taking on the tale and having to top (or at least meet) previous successes. As such, they did several things: the film embraces the Scottish background in contrast to previous European-esque fantasy films that went for a less clear atmosphere; the female protagonist, named Máirín, is a shy loner in comparison to the outgoing Disney females, while the male protagonist, named Sachairi, was a bit more rugged and mature than previous Disney males, inspired by video game leads like Chris Refield and Solid Snake; the story also takes influence from several other Scottish tales, such as "Rushen Coatie," and "The Sea-Maiden." The result led to a story about a woman who ventures to save the kingdom with her trusty red cow when the prince is kidnapped and imprisoned by a wicked selkie. The film earned praise for it's reliance on a specific European culture (even if some details were incorrect) and grossed $400 at the box office. Along with this, Máirín was originally intended to be a redhead, but her design eventually opted for dark brown hair, with Snow White and Natalie Portman as influences (though Pixar did use this for their own Scottish princess). As one might've expected, Máirín and Sachairi join the Disney royal line.

Meet the Robinsons--Pretty much the same film, though perhaps it makes a bit more money due to the fact that it's the first non-musical Disney film in 5 years and people were curious to know if musicals was all they were good at.

Night and Day--Released in 2008 after much turmoil, Disney comes up with a musical loosely inspired by "The Frog Princess" and "The Nightingale," the film revolves around a Korean prince who ventures with a magpie to find the secrets of immortality to save his ailing father. The film was more comedic in tone than previous musicals, but ironically seen as one of Disney's more intimate and emotional films, particularly between shy Prince Jiyu and Sujin (the magpie turned human), and it's praise for accuracy for Korean culture--except certain details like linguistics. It's noted that "Avatar: The Last Airbender" was a heavy influence, and while financially successful (making about $300 million), it's seen as underrated in contrast to the success reached during the revival era. But at least Sujin and Jiyu joined the Disney royal line.

Hope you don't mind me re-writing your childhood! My rewrite stuff with the Disney eras is probably done, but maybe I'll rewrite the concept of their direct-to-DVD films sometime.

Rozdział 2. Tiara Przydziału

W Wielkiej Sali panował gwar, bo wszyscy byli podekscytowani powrotem do szkoły. Uczniowie, którzy nie zdążyli przywitać kolegów w pociągu, wymieniali się wakacyjnymi historiami. Remus też skinął w kierunku kilku znajomych twarzy, ale wkrótce pogrążył się w swoich myślach. Niespodziewanie, myślach o Patricku Brownie, a konkretnie o jego częstych zaczepkach i intencjach za nimi idącymi. Kiedy pewnego razu spytał Williama, dlaczego aż tak śmieje się na każdą wzmiankę o Brownie, kolega wyszczerzył tylko zęby jak kot z mugolskiej bajki dla dzieci i odmówił odpowiedzi.

Remus prychnął, zniesmaczony wspomnieniem.

— Coś nic nie mówisz. — Głos Williama wyrwał go z zamyślenia. 

— Nikt mnie o nic nie pyta.

— Chcesz pytań? — William uniósł białe brwi i rozłożył ręce, trącając łokciem Petera. Wyszeptał przeprosiny i znowu zwrócił żółte oczy na Remusa. — O kim sobie tak rozmyślasz?

— Nikim. — Remus zmarszczył brwi, czując nieprzyjemne ukłucie w żołądku.

— Nie o naszym nowym koledze z pociągu?

— Dlaczego miałbym o nim myśleć? — Remus wciąż nie dawał za wygraną. Wszędobylstwo Williama już zaczynało go irytować, a ledwo spędzili razem jeden dzień. 

Albinos westchnął z rezygnacją.

— Hm, może się pomyliłem.

Remus zauważył, że kolega wcale nie patrzy na niego, a przez niego. Nieśmiało odwrócił się i podążył za wzrokiem Williama. 

— To ona? — spytał.

— Na to wygląda.

Na samym końcu Wielkiej Sali, przy stole nauczycielskim, wypatrzyli nową twarz. Profesora od obrony przed czarną magią nawet z dużej odległości wyglądała na taką, która nigdy się nie śmiała. Jej żółte oczy, podobne do tych Williama, kontrastowały ze śniadą cerą i grubymi, ciemnymi włosami, spiętymi z tyłu w przedziwnie poskręcany, upięty u góry warkocz. Czarna szata w modnym, ale prostym kroju przeplatana była złotą nicią, pasującą kolorem do krótkich rękawiczek. Jej czujne oczy błyskały uważnie znad okrągłych okularów. Jednak najbardziej zadziwiającym elementem był przymiot wiedźmy. Na oparciu jej fotela siedziała ogromna sowa. Mimo że poruszała się jak żywa, kręcąc głową zgodnie z ruchami swojej właścicielki, była maszyną lub chociaż hybrydą maszyny. Pod szarymi piórami skrzydła ptaka zrobione były z połyskującego złotem metalu, a jej oczy i dziób były sumiennie wyrzeźbione na płaskim talerzu przyczepionym do łebka. Przyjaciele szybko podłapali nowy temat.

— Czy ktoś z was widział kiedykolwiek coś podobnego? — spytała z przejęciem Lily. Remus rozejrzał się po kolegach, ale wszyscy pokręcili głowami, nie spuszczając wzroku z przedziwnej sowy. 

— Może to jakaś tajna broń Ministerstwa? — Kiedy wszyscy spojrzeli na Marlene, speszyła się nieco. — W końcu jest wojna.

— Wygląda na taką, która zadaje dużo esejów — jęknęła z niezadowoleniem Dorcas. 

— Jak dla mnie za bardzo się stara — William wzruszył ramionami obojętnie, ale intensywność jego spojrzenia nie zelżała nawet na moment. Remus rozpoznał ten wzrok bez trudu. Jego przyjaciel był skrajnie zafascynowany. A co za tym szło, domyślił się, że zapewne wkrótce huncwoci wpadną w pierwsze tego roku szkolnego tarapaty. 

Nim zdążyli rozwinąć temat, profesora McGonagall wprowadziła do sali tłumek pierwszorocznych. Szum kroków przeplatał się ze szmerem ciekawskich rozmów. Wszyscy przyglądali się górującemu nad resztą nowych uczniów Syriuszowi, który był od nich co najmniej pół metra wyższy. James, William i Dorcas parsknęli śmiechem, jak i parę innych dzieciaków przy sąsiednich stołach. Remus też uśmiechnął się na ten komiczny widok. 

— Co to za nietęga mina? — zaczepił Syriusza, kiedy ten przechodził obok, w roztargnieniu starając się ogarnąć wzrokiem pomieszczenie. Jego szare oczy na chwilę spotkały się z tymi Remusa i chłopak znowu poczuł obce uczucie, kiełkujące w jego piersi. Coś na kształt zdenerwowania, które powoli przerodziło się w podekscytowanie. Syriusz uśmiechnął się do niego półgębkiem. 

W Wielkiej Sali znowu zapanowała cisza. Profesora McGonagall z namaszczeniem ułożyła na stołku wypłowiałą Tiarę Przydziału. Następnie stanęła obok i w oczekiwaniu, złapała swoje dłonie. Remus zawsze zastanawiał się, czy Tiara drzemie między przerwami, w których śpiewa swoje piosenki, czy po prostu bawi ją widok przerażonych pierwszorocznych i stąd jej zwłoka. Wreszcie zaczarowany szew rozpruł się szeroko, rozpoczynając wystąpienie:

Ciężko nie podnosić głosu

Obojętność jest grzeszna

W obecnej sytuacji

Nie lubujcie konfliktu

Nie pielęgnujcie frustracji

Szukajcie teraz paktu

Oprócz ważnego dyplomu

Zachowacie człowieczeństwo

Nieważne jest w tym roku

Remus spuścił wzrok i westchnął. Chociaż rymowanki Tiary, odkąd trafił do Hogwartu, były dość ponure, trudno mu było nie zauważyć, jak z roku na rok jej prośby stawały się coraz bardziej rzewne. Czasy, w których żyli, były bardzo niespokojne. Czasem ciężko było o tym zapomnieć, nawet jeśli miało się jedynie trzynaście lat.

Minerwa McGonagall odchrząknęła głośno. Od strony stołów dobieg��y niemrawe oklaski, dziękujące Tiarze za występ. Czarownica odczekała jeszcze chwilę, wpatrując się ze zmartwieniem w pergamin w swojej dłoni, po czym podniosła głos:

— Wyczytani z imienia i nazwiska nakładają Tiarę i siadają na stołku — wyjaśniła prosto i wbiła wzrok w pierwsze nazwisko na liście. 

— Trochę… ponuro — skomentowała Lily, opierając twarz na dłoni. Jej czoło znaczyła jedna, głęboka zmarszczka.

— Czego się spodziewałaś, Evans? 

— Pocieszenia, dobrego słowa, jakiejkolwiek nadziei na przykład, Potter — wycedziła przez zęby ruda, przewracając oczami, kiedy James z kwaśną miną pokazał jej język.

— Mnie zagrzała do działania. Przecież nic nam nie będzie, jeśli będziemy trzymać się razem, prawda Pru? — Peter uśmiechnął się niepewnie do przyjaciół, ale widząc ich nietęgie miny, wrócił do gładzenia puszystych listków Prudence.

— Black, Syriusz.

Głowa Remusa szybko przekręciła się w stronę podestu, aż coś strzyknęło mu w szyi. Rozmasowując swój kark, wbił oczy w sylwetkę ostrożnie przeciskającego się między dziećmi chłopaka. Usłyszał wokół siebie wścibskie szepty, powtarzające z zainteresowaniem nazwisko czystokrwistej rodziny. 

— Syriusz? Czy to przypadkiem nie dziedzic Blacków?

— Jest całkiem słodki.

— Głupia jesteś. Jest z Blacków.

— Black, jak rodzina trzymająca z Voldemortem.

— Black.

— Syriusz Black.

Od wszystkich tych przyciszonych głosów Remusowi zaczęło kręcić się w głowie. Zmierzył wzrokiem plotkujące przy stole Hufflepuffu dziewczyny i znowu odwrócił się w stronę podestu. Kiedy Syriusz usiadł na stołku, Tiara zabawnie zsunęła się mu na oczy. Uniósł dłonie, by ją poprawić, ale zamarł, wsłuchując się zapewne w szeptane mu do ucha słowa. Remus pamiętał, jak to było siedzieć na jego miejscu. Nigdy nie zapomni popłochu, w jaki wpadł, słysząc głośno zaakcentowane przez Tiarę słowo-klucz.

Wilkołak.

Zadrżał lekko, poruszony siłą wspomnień. Szybko odgonił od siebie dręczącą myśl i w skupieniu oczekiwał decyzji Tiary. 

— To dopiero historia — mruknął z zaciekawieniem William, kiedy mijały kolejne sekundy, a werdykt nie nadchodził. — Najwyraźniej twardy z niego pieprzny diabełek do zgryzienia. 

Nim Remus zdążył zagaić do przyjaciela, szew w poprzek Tiary rozwarł się i wykrzyczał wyczekiwaną odpowiedź. W Wielkiej Sali rozległy się gromkie oklaski. Syriusz zachwiał się lekko, gdy wstawał, wyraźnie oszołomiony. Profesora McGonagall ściągnęła Tiarę z jego głowy i skinęła na jakieś słowa chłopaka. Remus zamarł i poczuł dziwne ciepło rozlewające się w jego piersi. Kiedy jego oczy spotkały się z drugimi — roześmianymi i szarymi — uświadomił sobie, że jeśli nie weźmie oddechu, to się udusi. Niespodziewanie William przysunął się do niego tak blisko, że ich uda się stykały i zrobił Syriuszowi miejsce pomiędzy sobą a Peterem. Remus udał, że wcale nie liczył, że nowy chłopak usiądzie obok niego. Zepchnął ukłucie irytacji w głąb umysłu i przywołał na twarz pogodny uśmiech.

— Gratulacje! — uprzedził go James. Jego słowa zapoczątkowały lawinę serdeczności; przyjaciele zaczęli przekrzykiwać się i poklepywać silne ramiona Syriusza. Nawet Prudence połaskotała chłopaka po nosie. 

Remus bardzo się cieszył, naprawdę. Bardzo-bardzo nawet, co zauważył z dziwną podejrzliwością. Nie był co prawda jedynym ze swojej paczki znajomych, który polubił Syriusza, bo ten wydawał się być bystry, zabawny i intrygujący. Nawet William wydawał się zainteresowany, co nie zdarzało się zbyt często. Ale coś w emocjach, które towarzyszyły mu, kiedy Syriusz zwracał się wprost do niego, nie dawało mu spokoju. 

— Ustalone. Załatwię to. — Pewność w głosie Williama, przywołała Remusa z powrotem do rzeczywistości. 

— Co kombinujecie? — spytał, nonszalancko zerkając w stronę Ceremonii Przydziału, aczkolwiek bez realnego zainteresowania.

— Mówiłem, że mamy jedno wolne łóżko.

— To wyśmienity pomysł, Wills — pochwalił kolegę James. Remus powoli przeniósł wzrok na Syriusza, ale chłopak na niego nie patrzył. Zamiast tego oglądał się przez ramię, co zaniepokoiło Remusa. Remus zmarszczył brwi. Był pełen jakichś dziwnych emocji, które zupełnie przejmowały nad nim kontrolę. — W porządku, Es?

Jak na zawołanie, Syriusz wyprostował się i uśmiechnął lekko.

— Słucham?

Po plecach Remusa przeszedł dreszcz. Nieśmiało obejrzał się za siebie, próbując wypatrzeć coś, czemu jego nowy kolega mógłby przyglądać się z takim zainteresowaniem. 

— Chwila, moment — odezwał się William, po czym wycelował długim palcem w Syriusza.

look i don’t make the rules but sometimes a family can be a sexuality crisis-inducing captain, a transexual harpooning robot, a drug cartel leader-turned-engineer, a badass pilot with a hidden soft spot for kids, and a child/fart machine who keeps having to use the bathroom, and it’s nothing short of beautiful

just rewatched space sweepers (2021) on netflix and realized something which i don't think is ever actually addressed in text & am not sure if it was supposed to be obvious (bc it didn't even occur to me until now) but - spoilers ahead! -

are james sullivan's occasional body horror episodes a result of a nanobot treatment gone wrong/gone right? like it may be what's keeping him alive well beyond typical human life expectancy, but it's also putting him through excruciating pain. bc we see the veins on his face receding as the hydrogen bomb goes off, and we know that the heat output from an h-bomb explosion is the only thing that can kill nanobots (except the langrangian ones apparently), so.....?? is the reason why sullivan showed up out of nowhere at the last minute bc he was already supposed to be there, trying to get away from the bomb as well?

anyway. the film's been out over a year but i don't remember seeing anything about this particular aspect before. would be pretty interesting if it's actually canon!

also. i hate sullivan's backstory and the bizarre anti-semitic implications; it puts a v significant dampener on an otherwise good film (aside from tiger park's dreads jfc). my proposal for an alternate backstory (developed with my sib) goes:

push back the timeline. make it the 2100s or 2200s. doesn't really matter

following this, sullivan would have been born some time in the first half of the 2000s

instead of a war orphan who turns to eugenics (bruh???), he's instead born into privilege and his dad is basically elon musk. uts corp starts out as basically spacex

keep the nanobots bit! they're injected into him at some point - to cure a sickness, just for the hell of it, whatever. whether or not his dad has a hand in it depends on how heavy-handedly we want to draw the parallels with kot-nim and *her* dad. in any case, seeing how kot-nim's nanobots protect and help her, unlike his, will fuck sullivan up and contribute to why he so badly wants to destroy her after he's done exploiting her

this sullivan is a man obsessed with legacies (and not the "purity" of the human soul holy shit). he struggles at first to uphold his father's legacy. when he surpasses it by building eden, it's a slippery slope. now he wants to leave *his* own mark as flashily as possible, collecting orphans (including tae-ho and captain jang) & "raising" them in his own twisted version of parenthood to be "geniuses"

i think captain jang should have been more sullivan's protégé than tae-ho, which could also explain why she's more reluctant to "parent" kot-nim bc she doesn't know what a healthy parent-child relationship is supposed to look like. would have also given more weight to the revelation that she's tried to kill him multiple times. i like to think tae-ho had a mentor he was close to in the space guard - the closest thing he had to a parent, maybe the one who actually found him first before sullivan literally carried him in his arms to uts. maybe they died just before the mission where he found su-ni, and that's partly why he decided to save her

this film has everything - anti-capitalism, the juxtaposition of blood ties with found family, breaking cycles of abuse, nanobots!

this is A Lot of backstory though - which is why i wish space sweepers had been a tv series instead, so we could also have gotten more on everyone else. in any case, it's still a p good film with a lot of heart and great rewatch value! two hours just fly by!

A Chinese Ghost Story (1997)

While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...

Dig deep into your box of OAVs and you might find a copy of A Chinese Ghost Story, which is not the worst anime film I’ve ever seen, but should certainly be considered a contender. Badly integrating traditional 2D animation with CGI that would’ve felt at home in Spawn, it features an incomprehensible story you’ll be eager to see end.

Tax collector Ning (voiced by Michael Donovan) and his dog Solid Gold (Scott McNeil) runs into monks White Cloud (Richard Newman) and Ten Miles (Matt Smith). After explaining that they are exorcists who scour the land for malevolent spirits, they fly off to battle their rival, Red Beard (James Wong). Wandering into a ghost town, Ning sees the beautiful spirit Shine (Sylvia Chang) and falls in love, but even if she reciprocates his feelings, how can a ghost and a man be together?

Even without the abundant and unappealing 3D imagery crammed into nearly every scene, this is not a particularly good-looking movie. The characters range from realistic to so exaggerated they barely look human, which doesn’t help make the plot more digestible. It’s possible the English dub has mangled the story beyond repair but I can’t imagine Solid Gold was ever funny, and Ning spends so little time talking to Shine it’s impossible to buy that he’d be willing to give up his entire life just to be with her.

This plot has major pacing issues. It takes an eternity for Ning to realize things the audience will catch immediately, like the fact that he’s walked into a ghost town full of flesh-eating spirits and should probably leave immediately. At other points, we’re introduced to concepts and characters so quickly, you’ll hardly know who they are even at the end of the film. The exorcists and ghosts pull new abilities out of nowhere when the plot demands them to, and all the while every attempt at comedy falls so flat you’ll wonder if you haven’t died and gone to a Hell that’s been specially tailored just for you.

I don’t know what it was about A Chinese Ghost Story. Minutes in, I realized this was no good. I’ve seen much worse over the years – from the rape-happy Wicked City and Ninja Scroll, to the hilariously awful Battle Arena Toshinden – but something about this one drove me up the wall. I wished something - ANYTHING - would cut off the video and save me from the displeasure I was experiencing.

I should’ve known what I was getting into just looking at the DVD. It’s clearly Frankensteined together from a bunch of unrelated shots and no attempt has ben made to match the colors or hues. It’s actually a perfect representation of the film: a disjointed, ugly mess that wouldn’t be acceptable regardless of the language it’s presented in, or the place it originated from. Space Sweepers (2021)

I was only 11 mins into ‘Space Sweepers’ when I had to pause it because I was so amazed at how many languages had already been spoken in such a short time. Another thing was that everyone could just talk in their native tongue because every character had an ear piece that would instantly translate any language spoken. 

Bubs, what can I say about Bubs? I freaking love Bubs so much! AND THE STORY LINE! *cries a thousand tears* absolutely amazing.  Uncle Tiger also is the best uncle ever. I don’t make the rules. 

A Korean film that is extremely diverse, we also have Richard Armatiage as the ‘bad guy’ who was incredible!

1000/10 - Would HIGHLY recommend  this beautiful film. 

I’m also very much in love with Captain Jang <3
