Johan van der Graaf
A Dutch sailor on a merchant ship visiting Dejima (a trading port and reservation for foreigners in Nagasaki). From a relationship with a local prostitute, Johan has a child, but not wanting to give him up, the sailor leaves the port, promising to return. Torn between families in the Dutch Republic and Japan, he manages to visit Dejima a second time, only to find out that his mistress and child have mysteriously disappeared. Together with Shay, the angry dad escapes from Dejima deep into the land of the rising sun to find his second family, using the resources of the Templar Order.
On his naked body he wears cheap armor wrapped in fabric and a leather belt - the only thing that remains of Johan's previous wardrobe. The lack of armor emphasizes his pronounced muscles and the image of a "foreign barbarian." Cormac's coat of arms is painted on his breastplate, but a simple cross on his neck replaces the Templar cross, indicating his fictitious affiliation with the Order and pointing more to his religion and connection with his homeland. He is armed with a huge katana - nodachi, a Japanese tanegashima rifle, a pistol and two simple hidden blades stolen from members of the Brotherhood of Assassins. On the ring finger of his right hand, a wedding ring is barely noticeable, not allowing Johan to forget about his legitimate family and the deepest guilt before them. A scar from his eye to his bald head emphasizes his fighting spirit and not quite sound mind. With his shaved head, his maritime background, and the fact that he becomes Shay's first ally in Japan, he is not intentionally associated with Liam O'Brian, but his smirk, cocky stance, and his very personal goal of joining the Order are alluded to by Thomas Hickey. The last name is a reference to Milo van der Graaff, a Dutch West Indian merchant who worked with Edward Kenway. A canon character who is Johan's father and the great-grandfather of Jan van der Graaff, another canon character and future Black Cross (Milo and Jan's connection is not confirmed in canon, but is used here).

i've always felt that the templars being poisoned with red lyrium should have been revealed before the decision, because then you need to contend with choosing between possible time magic and tevinter indenturing the mages, and one of the largest armies in thedas, which is trained to defeat your allies if you're siding with mages, is now hopped up on red lyrium and considering the damage they could do before... do you want them as your enemies when they're Worse?
but without the red lyrium reveal, it's like they threw a tantrum and put themselves in timeout on the other side of fereldento go sulk. there's no real proof besides cass and cullen going 'this is weird' but also the game has established they're biased in favor of templars, so does your herald even trust that they're being genuine?
and the time travelling tevinters are like. next door. also the mages actually reached out-- it was the time magic that rendered that offer null and void. so yeah, like.... why would i side with templars? and the mages have magical expertise and years of academic pursuits under their belt and we're dealing with a complete unknown.
also josie talks enough about us taking a political hit for siding with the mages-- i think an inquisitor that sided with templars should get a +10 to court approval during WEWH, at minimum.
i feel like if the templar vs mage decision in inquisition was actually framed as like. the TEMPLARS are dealing with dangerous magic that could have world-altering consequences while the mages are the ones that are actively pushing you away would have at least made the decision more balanced? because on one hand players would probably see the urgency of the templar quest and want to do that, but also they would have to grapple with the fact that the mages are like. the most obvious and foolproof solution to the breach

Media: Double Trouble: Like Minds

A BIG thanks to @neuroticspiral, who obtained this article through uni library access. And let this be a reminder that if you are still in uni, you have access to so much published material that is locked away behind paywalls for the rest of us. You will miss that availability when you graduate, so enjoy it while you can! Obviously, these articles are under copyright, but today you are all my students and we are here for academic purposes.
This author make a few good points (keep reading for the bit about Eddie and Tom's eyes), but he also, I think, missed the point a few times. Full text of the article after the cut.
Double Trouble: Like Minds
17-YEAR-OLD ALEX FORBES (EDDIE REDMAYNE) SITS IN A POLICE INTERVIEW ROOM CALMLY. HE RADIATES A SUBTLE INTELLIGENCE, INDICATING THAT HE IS IN CONTROL OF THE SITUATION. NOT AT ALL THE REACTION OF A BOY WHO HAS JUST BEEN ARRESTED FOR THE MURDER OF HIS BEST FRIEND.
BY RJURIK DAVIDSON
What could have driven this innocent-looking youth to murder, or is he, as he claims, innocent? This is the question that forensic psychologist Sally Rowe (toni Collette) must answer. The interview process, together with Rowe’s own investigation, forms the first storyline of Like Minds.  The second storyline, which is the heart of the narrative, is intercut with the first.  It is Alex's retelling of the macabre and disturbing events that led to the murder of Nigel (Tom Sturridge).
In this story, Nigel arrives at a prestigious boarding school and becomes Alex's new roommate. Nigel is brooding and quiet.  He spends his time alone, dissecting animals and writing in voluminous notebooks.  He is, to the other boys, a freak. But he’s a freak who slowly draws Alex into his fantasy world, a world dominated by the history of the Knights Templar, the murder of the heretical Christians known as the Cathars, and the Templar myth of Maraclea.  According to this myth, Maraclea was the true love of one of the Knights Templar.  Before they could be married, she died tragically.  Devastated, he dug up her dead body and made love to it.  Nine months later, the knight was summoned to the grave, and on opening the coffin found that the body’s head had been moved beneath its hips and its thigh bones crossed, (the origin of the sign of the skull and crossbones, Nigel tells us).  This myth becomes central to Nigel’s gradual entrapment of Alex, and a ghoulish replay of the myth brings the story to a climax.
But it is more than a question of entrapment, for it seems that Alex himself has awakened these dark fantasies in Nigel: they have entered into a Gestalt relationship, in which ‘the whole is more important than the sum of its parts’.  Gestalt psychology is the true and central subject
of Like Minds.  Alex cannot help being dragged into Nigel’s fantasy world.  He finds himself agreeing to secret rendezvous, reading Nigel’s histories of the Templars and the Cathars, and taking on his friend’s obsessions.  It is as if Nigel is in his mind and can read his thoughts.  As
writer-director Gregory Read explains:
There is a big misconception about psychopaths. The majority of psychopaths are not killers at all.  They are out there functioning in society, maybe in a very dysfunctional way but still, they are not necessarily dangerous.  I thought, what happens if we put two potentially ‘normal’ psychopaths together in a close environment? Could they trigger something in each other?’
Filmed alternately in Yorkshire (the boarding school scenes), Adelaide (the police interview scenes), and New South Wales (the train scenes), the film is a macabre psychological thriller whose interest in Gestalt psychology is mirrored in its very structure, in which both storylines
resonate with each other.  At times the complexity of Like Minds strains and even ruptures its own bounds.  There are moments when the sheer amount of conceptual information threatens to overwhelm the viewer.  What, we ask, is the relationship of all this – the Templars, the myth of Maraclea, Gestalt psychology, the fact that almost all the adult males belong to a club apparently descended from the templars – to the story of the two boys?  But if this is a weakness it is also a redeeming feature: better a film be too complicated than thin and empty.  Read’s aim was to:
... think of it more in terms of a psychological puzzle, one which the audience can piece together.  With this in mind it was imperative that all the pieces were carefully defined, allowing the audience to read the clues through the story, and draw their own conclusion in retrospect.
Nevertheless, it doesn’t quite hold together.  The adult male club, for example, sits in the background threatening but never actually coming into play.  Nor is it exactly clear, by the film’s end, of what happened, and more importantly, what the motivations of the characters were.  The viewer is left to backtrack through the scenes to try to reassess.  The script also sometimes falls into the awkward error of transmitting chunks of information through dialogue.  Some of these moments form the film’s low points, as characters become mere mouthpieces for information or discourses about history.  The film is thus reminiscent of adaptations of novels for the screen, which so often fall into the same difficulties.
The history of Knights Templar is, in the wake of The Da Vinci Code, not exactly original material (though the myth of Maraclea and the history of the Cathars chart more original territory).  Neither is the boarding-school psychological thriller exactly unfamiliar.  Notions of half-forgotten histories, of secret clubs and the power of mythology, are common in the literature of the macabre, and at moments the film suffers from a disconcerting sense of déja vu.  What originality it shows lies in its combination of these elements.
Like Minds is distinguished by strong direction with great attention to the mise-en-scène.  The film makes great use of the brooding Yorkshire landscape with its muted light and bleak weather.  Director of Photography Nigel Bluck says:
The Yorkshire scenery was great.  The starkness of the leafless trees and the muted colours, the soft low English light, the classical stone architecture and the atmosphere of the snow were perfect for the mood we were trying to create in the film.
Adding to this is a nicely underplayed and moody score by Carlo Giacco, which works well with the direction.  Giacco composed the music so that there were:
... no cues where the music heralds what’s going to happen.  It follows rather than flags what is occurring dramatically.  The element of surprise works to great effect in the film throughout and it was important not to pre-empt that musically.
Without doubt there are some strong performances, most notably those of Eddie Redmayne and Toni Collette.  Redmayne is a young actor to watch.  Though this is only his first feature film, he captures the character of Alex with subtle verisimilitude. Director Read claims that ‘I wanted to find someone who had the eyes.  The casting was all about the eyes.’  This, however, proves to be truer of Tom Sturridge’s portrayal of Nigel.  Rather, Eddie Redmayne’s facial expressions as a whole carry his performance.  Indeed, this is no easy task considering the occasionally clunky dialogue, yet it is one he carries off with aplomb.  Collette, meanwhile creates a consummately professional performance from rather thin material, while Richard Roxburgh is less convincing as police officer Martin McKenzie, though the part offers probably the least potential for dramatic variation.  Here again, the film suffers from over-complexity. Roxburgh and Collette’s characters have apparently once had some kind of romantic relationship, a fact referred to only once or twice.  In this, as in various other elements, Read might have done better to strip out a character or two and simplify the film.  A 110-minute feature can only bear so many ingredients.
Like Minds is not, in the end, a ground-breaking film. Its key concerns – what is psychopathology?  What makes a psychopath? – will be familiar to most viewers.  Its interest in medieval history likewise has the touch of the familiar about it, even if some of the specifics are original. For a part-Australian film it does chart some new territory, delving into the sub-genre of the psychological thriller where recent Australian staples have been comedies or relationship dramas. Never boring, what carries the film is its satisfying pace, strong direction, well-planned mise-en-scène and strong performances.  It’s a film that shows that Gregory Read has talent, which should develop beyond this promising but unremarkable first feature.

Veilguard spoilers + delusion simp rant about Neve’s personal quest, romance, supporting NPC
for real can someone who romanced someone other than Neve (and didn’t encourage her to get with [redacted] or romanced [redacted]) lmk if her quest ends in anything other than riding off into the god damn sunset with Former Templar Now “Partner” (as in Detective (Sure, Jan)) Rana Savas? Bc I truly cannot see how that’s not her canon unromanced ending. Usually I’m just hootin and hollerin and making shit up about my main character-side character OTPs but like. The romance arc of Rook third wheeling the shit out of Rana and Neve is almost as good as Neve’s actual romance arc. And it’s not even like a “what, people can’t have friends? Not everything needs to be romance! they can just be friends!!” thing bc they were straight up acting married. There were so many heated looks and meaningful glances. Needless to say I’m fucking feasting but I’m also so flabbergasted bc how did this game manage to shit out the exact Neve/Rana fanfic I would have written if Rana weren’t even in the game? I am baffled yet delighted at something so extremely For Me actually existing in canon

Words feel free to ignore or use later:
scream(ing)
cry(ing)
throw(ing up)
goat
Scream
His dad didn't like his hair. He hadn't thought about it in years, but there had been that time, hadn't it, when he snuck Jamie away after practice and delivered him back to Mummy with his hair shorn down. Mummy had had a screaming fit when she saw it. His dad had raised his voice right back, calling her ungrateful--and after he'd spent his money doing something nice for his son. Saying it was his job, wasn't it, to make sure Jamie turned into a real man.
Crying
“‘The voice she was hearing was surely crying out for help. It must be. It had to be-’” “We can stop now, Uncle Roy.” Roy jerked back, startled into an awareness he'd lost somewhere between the words on the page. Beside him on the bed, Phoebe watched him with wide, guileless eyes that twinkled with concern under the fairy light. He swallowed. Cleared his throat. "Are you sure? We've still got ten minutes before bedtime." "Reading is supposed to be fun," she informed him. "If you're not enjoying it, then we can read something else."
Throw
He had half a mind to throw his copy of The Da Vinci Code at Jamie. Not because he thought it'd solve the problem, but because if Jamie was going to keep up a running commentary about any book in his hands, then Roy would rather be stuck listening about the Knights Templar.
Goat (yes, I had goat)
This may have been one of those Ted Things Roy would need time to get used to. In his day, you couldn’t wait to get away from your teammates for the few weeks a year you weren’t stuck with their ugly mugs. Not these little idiots. Whether it was all the team bonding exercises or Total Football that had finally driven them over the edge, the lads looked towards summer break as if it were a cruel exercise meant to break their spirits. The past month in locker room had been rife with the yipping excitement over calendars and travel plans as the team paired off in twos and threes. Richard was taking Jan back to his goat farm, for fuck’s sakes. And possibly an illicit party in an abandoned rail station, but the less Roy knew about that, the more deniability he had. Bumbercatch, with an intense expression and a faraway look in his eyes, had muttered worryingly about 'finally conquering the Alps.' Roy didn't want to know.

➛ 𝐇𝐎𝐁𝐁𝐈𝐄𝐒 . ⟢   Collecting things ( can vary between blades or bottles of unopened liquor he comes across during his travels in Thedas. He doesn’t drink them, enjoys the thrill of discovering something new over anything else. ) / Enjoys brushing up on the lore of each Region he visits. Everything from folklore, local rumours or gossip, cultural differences, he eats up. / Surprisingly he enjoys the long travels in the wild — making camp, the overall experience of adventuring is addictive to him, even with all its unknowns &&. dangers.
➛ 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘 . ⟢   Due to his caged &&. restricted upbringing, Mercius is incredibly enthusiastic about almost everything that catches his attention, or anything different, new he comes across during his travels. He approaches life with a steadfast curiosity, a stubborn optimism &&. a sense of child-like adventure. Extremely practical &&. engaged in a multitude of projects at any given time, his thinking-style is anticipatory : foreseeing events &&. generating ideas on the fly, while favouring activities that stimulate his mind. He’s not necessarily intellectual or studious by any standard definition, although he is often intelligent &&. can be widely read &&. highly verbal.

[ID: Screenshots of many tags left on this post. 1: "it's so funny to imagine Jowan swimming across the lake. but I like to think that he walked up to the templar in a little row boat. shove the templar out into the water (the templar proceeds to sink like a rock). and then jowan just very pathetically rows away without being stopped. it isnt fast. but it works."
2: "he blood magicked a very big fish to carry him."
3: "made a boat out of blood magic. pulled like a todd howard move and t-posed across the surface of the water. etc."
4: "asked to use the boat."
5: "a little known jowan fact is that aside from being a blood mage he's also on the fereldan olympic swim team."
6: "he doggy paddled. let a bitch live??"
7: "you know how moses parted the sea. I think jowan did that. it was very very cool and no one was there to see. and it took a lot of blood magic so he just passed out in some bushes the moment he hit the other side. my favorite suggestion in the tags though is that he just knocked out the one templar and stole the boat."
8: "he ran across it like one of those lizards."
9: "ok so you know how in the incredibles mrs. incredible can turn herself into a boat" End ID]
generally i make fun of the orlesian version of an organisation more than any other but i’ve got to admit there’s no bitch as useless as a kinloch hold templar

✨ (almost) all Killzone related drawings I’ve done so far! ✨
Almost because all other things I do are mostly OC related or there’s just a load of pics of Radec because he’s my favorite to draw. Also posting two works in progress since they look good enough to show off. There may be more to come!

Day 7 – Tolmar
Today was a rest day. It was an opportunity to wash my clothes, visit Tolmar with my wife, Jan, and absorb some of it’s Templar history.

We visited the Templar castle, Castle of Tomar,

and the attached Convent of Christ.

After enjoying lunch on the river we visited the historic manufacturing museum along the river. The  electricity generation plant permitted Tolmar to be the 3rd city in Portugal to have electric lighting.
