240902 Chanyeol @ King's Castle Power Radio Show
Chanyeol is in the studio now! The DJ said that finally, they have a [male] visual singer as guest 🥰
Q: How was the reaction of people around you when you appeared in "The Frog"?
CHANYEOL: "A lot contacted me and said they enjoyed watching it. When I go to the gym and meet my hyungs and seniors, I get a lot of comments like: "You did so well", "you worked really hard" and "it was fun to watch!"
Chanyeol singing "Black Out".
Chanyeol Power 2024 version
They danced so much that Chanyeol had to take off his outer shirt afterwards
Q: How does it feel that you were with such veteran actors in "The Frog"?
CHANYEOL : "From the moment I first heard that we were going to start filming, I was really nervous. The pressure was so great, and at the same time, my greed (to do well) also grew, so I really prepared very hard for it. [Are you still nervous now?] Well, compared to before, I'm less nervous but still nervous. [Shout: "I can do it!" 3x] I can do it! I can do it! [Louder!] I can do it!!!! Ohh..my nerves calmed down a bit!"
Q: "Who among the senior actors have you become closest to?"
CHANYEOL : "It's Park Jihwan hyungnim. We had a lot of scenes together and some of our hobbies overlap. When we have rest time, we talk a lot in the waiting room. [What hobby?] Golf! We talk alot about golf. We also share stories to each other"
👨: (cmt) you will come again right? CY: Yeah I gotta come once per week for this, I love it so much, it's stress relieving & I'm sweating a lot. It's not easy to sweat a lot like this on a radio broadcast~ but as you can see on the viewable radio both of us are dripping in sweat
🧑🏻The title is …? 🍒"Black Out." 🧑🏻I know what does Blackout means, but just in case there are those who don't know: What does blackout mean? 🍒Blackout actually has a meaning of power outage, but it also refers to the phenomenon of memory loss. When I listened to the song "Black Out," the word "blackout" came to my mind first, so I worked on it by comparing the state that comes after a breakup to the phenomenon of blackout.
🧑🏻Then I can't help but ask this question. Blackout. Chanyeol, have you ever blacked out after drinking? 🍒Just once, I had just once, and that was when I first met Jang Sung-kyu hyung. It was our first time having a drink together in private. That's when I blacked out for the first time. 🧑🏻Oh, you blacked out! Sung-kyu is a good drinker. 🍒Yes, maybe that's why. Just with the sound of the car door closing, my eyes opened in the morning. 🧑🏻Oh, really? And thankfully, you were at home? Did the manager..? 🍒No, I think I might have taken the taxi to go home safely. 🧑🏻Ah, by taxi? Then it's a relief. 🍒Yes, I have a homing instinct. 🧑🏻Actually, there are different acts after being drunk. Is falling asleep yours? 🍒Going home is mine. 🧑🏻Going home? 🍒Yes, if I feel like I'm getting a bit drunk, I just head home. 🧑🏻It’s somewhat similar to me. It's that kind of style. 🍒I think it's important.
👨🏻 I wonder how much you've practiced for the action scene? 🍒When rehearsing the action scene, I shouldn’t get hurt, so I rehearsed a lot and when going to filming… 🧒🏻By any chance, have you ever had a situation where your partner's breathing was off, and their hand accidentally touched your face or something like that? 🍒fortunately, there was nothing like getting hurt happened. There’s an episode that.. since Kim Yoon-seok is such a veteran in action scenes, there was a scene where Kim Yoon-seok and I were going back at each other, so the director, Kim Yoon-seok, and I were wondering how to make this scene, “How should we make this scene?” “How could we have action on this scene?” while having a meeting about it, (the director) asked “How about this?”(KYS) pretends to choke me, and both get so focused on our conversation that (KYS) gradually start to exert more force. It was just a rehearsal!! 👨🏻So what happened? 🍒I was wondering was it originally like this? So I was enduring it. 👨🏻Did you growl? 🍒I almost growled but before doing it he released me.

gonna risk sounding a ha*er, but respectfully, what are they doing with the crash landing on you musical in japan?
the seoul production happened at a time when c0vid was still wreaking havoc so i couldn't go then. when i heard a japan staging was in the works, i was completely set on going.
but when they announced the cast for japan? i was confused.

as a theatre fan myself, i would be the first to vouch for musical theatre actors in an adaptation work. i will defend their right to interpret their roles in a live stage performance, one that original actors won't be able to execute. the skillset and presentation are different.
the original seoul musical production selected an impressive slew of actors for ri jeong-hyeok, the likes of min woo-hyuk (who is now jean valjean in the current kr production of les miserables), lee kyu-hyung (whose theatre roles outnumber his movie/drama filmography), and lee jang-woo (who was maxim de winter in rebecca).
the current japan production cast a member from astr0 and a former theatre gu seung-jun. for ri jeong-hyeok.
"but they are singers!" sure. but there's singing for the theatre and singing for a concert?
honestly, i'm not even strict who plays gu seung-jun and seo-dan, i feel those roles can be good entry points for newcomers.
but i think you have to have some heavyweights for ri jeong-hyeok and yoon se-ri?
now the se-ris are fine, kim ryeo-won originated yoon se-ri in seoul with a lot of theatre work behind her wings, while linzy is a kpop singer turned theatre actress.
but the astr0 member playing jeong-hyeok, who has top-billing of the show, only has one theatre work under his sleeve. maybe he could play the guy after a few more shows and years of stage experience, but right now...??
not to be ageist too, but there's currently a 6-14 year gap between the lead couple cast for the japan staging and cloy isn't...really...a noona drama? the strength of cloy was it revolved around a main couple who neither outshone nor exceeded the other. they complimented each other in every way. and the awkward part is the disparity shows.
so yeah my main gripe is stunt casting.
and i can see it now as the musical is being promoted, they focus heavily on the astr0 member and gu seung-juns (both kpop idols), more than the other cast members. the commercials and merch would speak for themselves. the fan clubs also had ticket priority.
i've yet to see the official jp twitter account promote the musical on the merits of how huge cloy was in japan or the fact that it's a musical adaptation of cloy at all. is this really a musical or an idol concert? with the social media interest, i'm quite sure it's being successfully marketed as the latter.
these are some of the merchandise.

my interest has gone from 10 to say around 3. they are one week from premiering in japan and i'm losing hope that the musical will remember its source material and it's really disappointing as a cloy and musical fan (and even say as a frequent japan visitor).
so it's a huge bummer, and i'll just be waiting for the filmed version of the seoul musical to somehow make its way to me. it's now screening in singapore, so i guess there's hope for that.
i was excited for the japan production and hoped it would do well because it will be the basis of whether the musical will visit more overseas territories. but if they're just gonna use cloy as a vehicle for idol promotions then miss me with this bs.

Graceful family. 9.5
Story: 9-10
Acting: 👌
Chemistry: 10
If you’re into revenge corrupt rich families with a phenomenal and I do mean phenomenal storyline then this is your drama. This is like a toss of Penthouse, Lawless Lawyer, (U.S) movie Enemy of the State all rolled into one. Like for me each episode was just perfect, I guess maybe for some it could get to be a bit borderline heavy on the melodramatic side, especially with all the rich family crazy antics that goes on, but that’s kind of the whole point of the storyline for me. Also the sideline story romance between the leads was just the added icing bonus.

Signal (2016), Secret Forest (2017)
this post is not about korean films - but a special space is carved out to two of the best korean dramas i’ve ever watched. a potent mix of everything i wish for in a drama converges in Signal and Secret Forest - tightly written plot, poignant but un-didactic social commentary, excellent acting, composed direction, remarkable cinematography and music. these two dramas are on another level of distinction compared to the rest.
Signal is a crime drama with a dose of fantasy. when a young upstart prosecutor (Lee Je-hoon) encounters a walkie-talkie that connects him to the past, he teams up with a determined cop (Kim Hye-soo) to solve cold crimes and unearth the truth about a cop who had mysteriously disappeared (Jo Jin-woong). dealing with similar themes, Secret Forest features Jo Seung-woo as an apathetic and principled prosecutor, who works together with a warm-hearted kick-ass cop (Bae Doona) to expose and punish the rampant corruption in the prosecution, police force, and conglomerates.
*spoilers ahead*
what i really appreciate about both dramas are that its stories are based on real cases, and pays extreme detail in imitating them. Signal begins with the Hwaseong serial killings, which have been amply covered in other works (e.g. Memories of Murder) and form the groundworks for many korean films/dramas’ creative reimagination. Signal also covers the Miryang gang rape case (a la Han Gong Ju), and even incorporated the line that outraged the korean public into the script (”my boy’s not at fault for being a rapist - she seduced him”). it also makes reference to the collapse to the Seongsu bridge collapse in 1994 (as in House of Hummingbird too). in fact, a family member of a victim of crime sent a message of gratitude to the Signal production staff, for recognising and giving space to their pain.
Secret Forest does not make such direct references to cases of corruption that happened, but does so in more subtle ways. when a security guard is unable to hand over a CCTV tape from a month ago, citing that they typically discard the tapes after 14 days although the rules stipulate a 2-month period, Jo Seung-woo’s character coldly points out that this trivial attitude towards following the law will eventually lead to the sinking of a ship or the collapse of a department store. (Sewol ferry incident in 2014, Sampoong Department Store collapse in in 1995). in doing so, it is not afraid to pointedly criticise the ills that have gone unchecked. when the corrupt conglomerate CEO is arrested and arrives in court feigning illness on a wheelchair, we laugh because we’ve seen this before - in different countries, in different eras.
***more spoilers***
another area that distinguishes these two dramas from the rest, is the rich and complex characters created. the cops in both dramas were coerced into ill-doings because of the widespread corruption in the system around them that punished those who tried to stay morally upright. but there remain people who would sacrifice themselves to uproot corruption. Shin Hye-sun’s character in Secret Forest was a sacrificial victim that eventually pointed the team to the culprit, Jo Jin-woong’s character in Signal knowingly risked his life so that his remains could become evidence for indicting the culprit. Kim Hye-soo’s muted optimism, which so quickly deflated into a cold-hearted realism, was especially painful to watch.
but the character that fascinated me most was Yoo Jae-myung’s character in Secret Forest, who unintentionally tumbled into corruption step by wicked step. it all started with an uneventful lunch that a senior volunteered to paid for; it then became a senior doting on him buying him a luxury wallet; and it ends with him being pressured to do him favours. while pretending to be a corrupt prosecutor, Yoo Jae-myung’s character secretly collected evidence, created a special investigation taskforce for Jo Seung-woo’s upright prosecutor, accumulated power to protect the upright prosecutors, before handing the evidence over and committing suicide in disgrace.
*end of all spoilers*
one final spoiler - both dramas do not end in blinding optimism for the future (why should it?) but this should not deter you from watching the drama. rectifying crime & undoing corruption is a systemic unearthing that requires stamina. and if you’re a fan like me, thankfully season 2′s of both dramas are in the works!
