"The town around this Sanctuary...the Shopfront was shuttered ages ago— people in this town knew it was not safe to live here anymore. The last people left a long time ago. There's just a withered old ghost town here where the Observatory Tower, with eagles perched all over it- I haven't cooped the eagles in forever, they're half feral at this point. Sepal comes by, Dock is our friend but she's in the Underworld now. It's just been me and Charlotte and these birds for a long long time. There are no living spaces in the tower; it has been years since we've had shelter for the lost.

There is nothing here.

So the tramp of boots I can hear from the moment they leave their ships- there are no souls left in this town.

And when Jax and his sailors put their hands on Tamsin...there is nothing subtle about what happens next. Sailors are flung through the town by wind, their limbs are torn apart, blood spills in the street, they are flung aside like dolls, and those who get away and get to shelter where the wind can't reach them find the force of gravity reversed and those homes flung into sky, as if by the hands of angry gods.

Jax is left alive.

When this happened in the Wickedness actual play for the game's kickstarter (feat. Jay Dragon, Jeeyon Shim, and Brennan Lee Mulligan + available on the Monster Darling's youtube channel) I always imagined a grown up Jax wandering the Haeth and never able to sleep in the same place twice.

Zooble is so sweet this whole episode too, they really should adventure more, but honeyyyy the simbolism in this digital world is not subtle-> ONE COULD SAY A PLASTIC PERSSONALITY-

I find it so interesting that Zooble knows about the sugestion box, or that they even HAVE one, even if Caine doesn't use it it is STILL THERE

... oh that's sad, like, I bet Zooble picked that ahnd especificaly for this adventure but couldn't do anything FUN with it bc it's fisics is basicaly just a arm with unconvenience shape....

Yeah of they didn't knew before Caine's therapy sessions they absolutely know now that his AI is 3s always from breaking and draging them all to fucking death

... Jax you wanna bet? You REALLY wanna bet? Bc that 001 is either you are a npc or the first of the main cast to GO buddy, and IF you are npc, that's a VERY optimistic view of Caine coming from who you ARE

I WANT TO KNOW SO BAD WHAT ZOOBLE KNOWS, did Caine told them stories of ex-players? Did they find something out? Did the OTHERS SEEN CAINE GO APE SHIT WITH SOMEONE WHO CROSSED THE LINE??? Bc Jax sure doesn't act like he expects punishment

And this right here is why I find Ragatha more interesting than others "be positive :D" character trope in most shows I have watched before. She is genuine... but at what point it is bc she trully likes you and what point it's her "people pleaser mode", she IS the one who guards most resentment over the cast and I love it, I KNOW people like her irl it's fascinating seeing it being show here

Pomni is so cool, I love her so much as a protagonist and I'm fascinated by her role in the story, she tecnicaly completed her arc I think? Like how she is trying to conect with the others and understanding them and meeting in the middle of her comfort zone to their needs? I think she will play now the role model right? The one that will help the others face their own struggles, like she did with gangle

I know that the point of gercharacter is being the most human one, the newbie with speed run strats and all, but I'd find it fascinating if she was a designed therapist to this group and just doesn't remember or is an npc?

I dunno based on murder drones I can only watch with my half brain and only understand shit when it actualy hits the fan

“Fuck,” Shauna mutters from her spot at her desk. “Fuck!”

Jackie looks up from where she’s been trying to study on Shauna’s bed — though, it’s very hard when, clearly, Shauna can’t focus. Predictably, she’s sitting in her desk chair with her elbows on her desk and her face in her hands. She’s taking these deep, shallow breaths like she can’t tell if she’s about to cry or not, and Jackie’s resolve breaks.

“Baby?” She starts, and Shauna just shakes her head, unmoving from her hands. “What’s wrong? Everything okay?”

Shauna just takes another deep breath, exhaling on a soft whimper. Jackie stands from her spot on the bed, closing the book she was definitely reading and setting it on Shauna’s nightstand. She walks over, slowly approaching, because she knows how Shauna gets when she’s like this. “Talk to me, sweetheart.” She says, as soft as she can, and Shauna breaks, body convulsing as big, fat tears stream down her cheeks.

“I’m sorry.” Is all Shauna says, repeating it like a mantra. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I— I really tried, Jax, I promise—”

Jackie pulls Shauna to rest her head against her chest, hand against her cheek to hold her there. “Shh, baby, what’s wrong? Why are you apologizing?”

Shauna coughs and sniffles a little on her tears, and Jackie moves her thumbs to wipe at her cheeks. Shauna leans into it immediately, almost on instinct, and Jackie’s heart breaks. Her baby boy, her own little angel — always so strong for her, putting on an act in front of everyone so they know not to mess with her, to protect them from seeing what’s vulnerable underneath.

But Jackie sees it. Jackie sees it, and she loves her for it. Not in spite of it, because of it. She loves Shauna for the ways she protects herself, protects the ones she loves. She loves that Shauna trusts her enough to let down those walls around her. She loves that Shauna knows that, right now, she’s just Jackie’s baby.

And, sometimes, she needs a little extra— guidance, to remember that. Sometimes it doesn’t come so easy. Words can be hard for Shauna, sometimes, even when she’s big. Despite her advanced English classes, despite all the books she’s read and all the journals she’s written, she’s not so good at verbalizing what she’s thinking. It all gets jumbled, mixing up the words in her head until she’s overwhelmed by the mere thought of speaking.

“Love,” Jackie speaks, after a minute. “Why don’t we move to the bed, hm?” She doesn’t let Shauna respond, simply tugging her up and out of her chair. She guides her to sit against the headboard, and, instinctively, her knees come up against her chest and under her chin. She rests her head against them like it’s too heavy for her shoulders, cheek pressing against her soccer-bruised knee. Jackie slides in next to her, avoiding contact so she doesn’t overwhelm her.

They sit in silence for a while, longer than usual. Jackie focuses on the rise and fall of Shauna’s chest, how her breathing is finally, finally, evening out. Jackie’s about to start talking, maybe try to ask Shauna what’s wrong again, when she speaks.

“I’m sorry.” It’s so quiet, barely able to be heard over the fan that sits in the corner of Shauna’s room. Shauna looks so small, tense against her own body like the very idea of her own skin is too much.

“For what, honey?” Jackie asks, soft and quiet to try to not overstimulate Shauna, but she winces a little at the sound of her voice near her ear anyways.

“I was tryin’—” Her words slur, just a little, a telltale sign that she’s slipping, fast and hard. Shauna’s always so proper with how she speaks, a habit drilled into her by her mother at a young age. “Was tryna be good. Didn’t want you to think I was annoyin’. Don’t want you to leave.”

Tears well up in Shauna’s eyes again, and Jackie watches as they gloss over and shine in the dim light of her bedroom. She can’t help it anymore, wrapping her arms around Shauna and hugging her tightly, dragging her — practically — into her lap. Shauna turns her head to tuck it into Jackie’s neck as another wave of sobs overtake her body. She feels her shake against her, pressing her full body weight into Jackie as if asking her to take the pain.

(If Jackie could, she would. If she could take all of her boy’s pain and give it to herself, let her carry it for her until it all feels okay again, she would. She tries, as hard as she can, to get as close as possible to doing so. But it’s not always enough.)

She lets Shauna lean against her. She lets her cry into her neck, muffle her sobs in her shoulder while she rubs comfort up and down her back. She rocks her boy back and forth, just slightly, letting her sobs relent before she fully takes in her form.

She knows her boy is small just by her body language. It’s not often that she regresses this young, but Jackie figures it’s pretty fair, considering she hasn’t regressed in weeks. “Hey, bub,” She brings her hand up to scratch lightly at Shauna’s scalp. “How old is my boy today, hm?”

Shauna’s hand raises, just slightly, before she hesitates, messing with her thumb. After a moment, she holds up two fingers for Jackie to see. Her face is still buried in her neck, but Jackie smiles anyways. “You feel up to talking, baby boy?” Shauna shakes her head no against Jackie’s neck. “That’s okay, honey. Do you want your cards?” A nod. “Okay, love. You have to let me get up, first.”

Hesitantly, Shauna removes herself from Jackie’s lap, giving her the first glimpse of the girl’s face after her sob-session. There’s still remnants of her tears streaking down her face, and her eyes are tinted red and bloodshot from all of it. Her face is flushed and her eyes are big, brown, and vulnerable. She looks up at Jackie, the way she always does, the way that always says This is the real me. The way that says Please don’t leave. I’m giving you my everything. Please don’t break me.

And Jackie won’t. Instead, Jackie kneels down to grab Shauna’s bag from under her bed. She reaches in the front pocket and pulls out a stack of blue index cards, with words and little drawings already set up on them. She puts the bag down at the edge of the bed, in case Shauna needs it, and puts the cards down in front of her boy. “What do you want, sweetie?” Jackie asks. Shauna flips through the cards before landing on the one she was looking for. She holds it out to Jackie, and she grabs it with a grin.

It’s one with a little wolf drawing on it that just says My shirt! in Shauna’s handwriting. Jackie’s grin widens as she reads the card, happy to look back up and see a small smile on her baby’s face. “You want your wolf shirt?” After her nod, Jackie continues. “You want the red or the black one?” She flips the card over, showing the little red box and the little black box. When Shauna points to the black one, Jackie does a mock salute, smiling big and wide and unashamed at Shauna’s giggle.

She reaches down into the backpack, finding the little rolled up black wolf shirt at the bottom of the bag. She reaches into Shauna’s dresser and grabs a pair of boxers, too, assuming she’ll probably ask for them next. “Do you want me to undress you, baby? Or do you want to do it?”

Shauna hesitates, and then points to Jackie. Jackie can’t help but smile softly, reaching over to tug Shauna’s shirt off. When she’s just in her bra, Jackie gestures vaguely, as if to say this off, too? Shauna nods, predictably, and Jackie reaches behind her to take it off for her. She grabs the wolf shirt from where she’d laid it down and puts it over Shauna’s head. Luckily, Shauna’s not too small, and is able to help her by moving her arms and head into the hole with her.

Shauna practically beams once the shirt’s on. Her hair’s slightly tousled from putting the shirt over her head, and her flush from crying is mostly faded now, and Jackie can’t help but lean forward and press a little kiss to the tip of her nose, relishing in the little giggle she gets in response. Jackie reaches over and grabs the boxers, motioning to Shauna. “You wanna do these, baby?” Shauna nods, again, as predictable as before, and Jackie hands them to her with a smile, turning around to face the wall.

(She knows how Shauna gets when she’s small like this. It’s from the lack of privacy she felt in her childhood — the lack of control. She likes having these choices, and she has her little ticks that she can never, ever stand.)

Shauna taps her shoulder lightly when she’s done, and Jackie turns around. She smiles at the girl as she grabs her clothes from before, throwing them in the general direction of Shauna’s laundry basket. When she turns around, Shauna is shuffling through the cards again, the determination in her eyes showing that she’s searching for something specific.

Finally, she seems to find what she’s looking for, and hands Jackie 3 cards. The first reads Paci, then Juice, and, finally, Journal. “Here, baby,” She reaches in the bag, grabbing Shauna’s little journal — a blue notebook with plenty of stickers on it, courtesy of Mel and Van — and her green and blue pacifier, the first one Jackie ever bought her. She’s bought her many more since this one, but it’s always Shauna’s favorite. “You can journal while I go get your juice, okay?”

Shauna seems content with this plan, nodding firmly and grabbing the journal and the pacifier from Jackie’s hands. Immediately, she puts the pacifier in her mouth and moves to sit against the headboard again. She grabs a pen from her nightstand and begins to write as Jackie slips out of the room, walking down to the kitchen to get some juice.

She grabs one of Shauna’s favorite cups — a blue sippy cup with a little Spider-man graphic on it — and fills it up with fruit punch, adding just a little water so it’s not too overpowering for her boy.

As she moves back up to the room, it’s oddly quiet. There’s none of Shauna’s little clipped breaths she gets when she’s fresh out of crying, no light scratch of pen against paper.

The reason for it becomes apparent when she reaches the top of the ladder to Shauna’s room, however.

Her boy — her beautiful, handsome, angel boy — is fast asleep, head lolling against her own shoulder, notebook still open across her lap. Jackie can’t help but smile softly and sigh affectionately before putting the sippy cup down on the nightstand and cleaning up Shauna’s journal, making sure to cap the pen and put it back in the exact spot it was in before.

Once the journal is safely tucked back into Shauna’s backpack, and Shauna’s backpack is safely tucked under Shauna’s bed, Jackie maneuvers her baby so she’s laying down, leaning her head against Jackie’s chest.

Once awake, she knows Shauna will try not to talk about what triggered this. She knows she’ll try to return to her rigorous studying, and try to ignore her own needs yet again.

It’s okay, though. Jackie doesn’t mind helping her stubborn baby when she knows she needs it.

So wasn't expecting to make this Gaming Hot Take of the day but after reading this from Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki I gotta be honest I had to write something

So look, I can kinda understand this stance in a very retrospective sense as he says "Fostered from the beginning." Playstation 1 in particular didn't really make a big distinction between its original IP and its Third Party IP. It's why you had Crash Bandicoot or Cloud Strife as basically the mascot of Playstation when both come from third parties. Compared to the likes of Mario and Sonic who were not only their console mascot, but company mascots respectively.

But by now, Playstation has an undeniable back catalogue of first and second IP that it can either revive or rerelease if need be. Like if we're looking at like multi entry series and not just one offs, by the PS2, Sony had:

Ape Escape

Sly Cooper

MediEvil

Wild Arms

Dark Cloud

Everybody's Golf

God of War

Rachet and Clank

And by the PS3 we have

Infamous

Uncharted

Killzone

Resistance

Little Big Planet

Like Sony has their own catalogue that can stand on its own. Its not like they should be struggling now to play catch up.

Now if you read my recent Emio and Mages post, I am very well aware that in the age of modern gaming, a game doesn't get made without a team devoted to it. And with the rising production and time costs of making games, no company can release a hundred games and be profitable. So sadly some IP just do fall by the wayside in favor of others. Guerrilla Games isn't making Killzone anymore, because their efforts are spent on Horizon and Sucker Punch went from being the Sly Cooper guys to the Infamous guys, to now the Ghosts of Tsushima guys.

However, I feel like Sony has had some circumstances that compound this problem. Sony and Playstation are technically powerful machines-they want to fully utilize the hardware they're selling you for hundreds of dollars. It is their brand. However, the downside to this is because of this the rise in production costs, it's now taking much longer to make games that make use of the powerful hardware. We went from being able to release a full trilogy in a single generation to basically one. Its also made worse by the fact that Sony has been very active in shuttering studios and cutting costs. The biggest would be the loss of Sony Japan Studio, who were beloved for their more varied Japanese-y style games. It added flavor to the more Naughty Dog inspired games of the sixth and seventh generation. But now, Sony went all in on being that one big budget release that leaned more towards broader genres that could maximize the amount of sales like Uncharted, The Last of Us, Spider-Man, etc.

With this, a lot of mismanagement, its really made the PS5 era feel very sparse compared to the PS4. Now, I wanna stress this, I actually do not subscribe to the mentality "Playstation has no games." Playstation has tons of games beyond just their first party titles, some are exclusive like Final Fantasy 16, some are just way too powerful to be something that could be played on a switch like GTAV. Heck, I played Bomb Rush Cyberfunk on my PS5 and it's probably the game I've dumped the most time into this year. So yes, even if Playstation's first party offerings are few and far between, you're still capable of playing a lot of good games on this really expensive plastic box.

And maybe that's indicative of the fact that Playstation has always been about selling you the hardware on the basis of the hardware. Going back to the PS1, the main selling points was this was the haven for third parties after Nintendo really burned a lot of developers with the N64, and that this was a much more system than the N64. When you look at someone like Nintendo now, they're hardware is underpowered they live and die by the power of their software that only they can provide and no one else. But the playstation even if its not shooting out a new Jax & Daxter every year, they're still the place you can play something like Final Fantasy or Elden Ring at a really great clip. Perhaps Totoki was alluding to that reliance on hardware instead of software because in retrospect, they never really had that big homegrown system seller on playstation till the PS2 with things like God of War. And now fostering that, has made it hard to have that sort of Zelda or Halo that are so undeniably their companies IP and will move launch units.

But a reliance on just being the place where you can play games at a high fidelity, means that its still got competition from Xbox and PC. So Sony would have to offer a service the others don't and that can be software you find nowhere else. True story, I was genuinely conflicted about getting a PS5 or and Xbox X/S for my birthday because I knew I needed to at least have a strong machine to play with my switch. And ultimately I took PS5 because that was the console that would have God of War Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2. So yes, IP absolutely factors into purchases in my experience. And the fact that this generation Sony has really struggled to put out first party games, really makes that purchase factor feel so much thinner and thinner. When you know-you know Sony has loads of IP (Some that haven't left their respective console) that even a simple remaster on the PS5 could at least hold people over in-between their AAA releases. So to hear their CFO say that they don't have enough IP, gets very disingenuous.

To close this out, I wanna stress something. I don't think wanting to make new IP is a bad thing. Im glad Sony is willing to invest 8 years and millions of dollars into something new. But eventually, we reach a point where this has to be better managed. We have to have some smaller titles that can be released between the bigger ones. We gotta have some variation in the types of games we're getting from the platform holder. And sometimes leaning in on those fan faves for smaller titles would help. Are they gonna sell 10 million units? More than likely not. But if you balance the budget, having something move between 1-2 million units would be acceptable. Perhaps maybe allow more second party developers a crack at using that IP so your internal teams can work on the bigger blockbuster titles?

The PS5 generation has been a pretty all over the map one for Sony, and the more we learn about the thoughts and management behind the scenes, the more aggravating it can become when this platform does something really cool, but then seems to take two steps back. I genuinely can't tell you if I'll get a PS6. But if I do, it will probably not be out of optimism for classic Playstation franchises to return.

Turn The Page.

Drew got all of her classes set up and is preparing herself for her first year of high school.

At the end of her 8th grade year, she tried for the Brindleton Bay Prep cheer team and made it. She also joined the Arts Program as she has a deep interest in painting. She's been so caught up in getting herself ready that she hasn't seen her best friend Jaxon in a while. She takes out her phone and shoots him a text.

Drew: Hey Jax! It's been a minute. How r u? Jax: Oh gosh! I was just about to hit u. Want to meet at the park to catch up? Drew: Sure! I'll see you there.

Drew runs down the hall to her mom and asks her for a ride to meet Jaxon. Morgan agrees and drops her off.

Morgan: Text me when you're ready. Drew: Okay, mommy.

She spots Jaxon standing by the picnic tables and runs over to greet him.

Drew: JAXON!!!!!

She leaps into his arms. They share a laugh as Jaxon regains his balance and hugs her.

Jaxon: I'm taking this as a "I miss you". Drew: SOOOOO much. Jaxon: I've missed you too!

Drew: How are you feeling? We'll be freshman Monday! Jax: I feel cool. I made some friends at basketball camp this summer and my sister will be there. I feel like I'll be fine. Drew: Yeah! That's going to be cool. Jax: Oh yeah, congrats on making the cheer team. I saw you posted it on Social Bunny.

Drew: Thank you! I appreciate it. It's been having me stressed. I'm getting so buff from the workouts. Jax: I can see. But, you look good. The muscle looks good on you.

Drew blushes and looks away.

Drew: So besides basketball, how was your summer? I seen you've been everywhere! Jax: Yeah, basketball kept me running. As well as my mama. But, I've had a time. What about you? Drew: I spent a month in Ciudad and Newcrest visiting my grandparents but I've been a nervous wreck.

Jax: You? Nervous? Drew: Yes. I just get anxious, I guess. I think I'm ready but then again I don't know if I am. Jax: You'll be fine. Drew: Not you comforting me now!

They laugh and walk on through the park.

Jaxon pulls out his phone and looks at a picture saved on his phone.

Jax: *Blushes* Me too. Want to sit at that table? Drew: Of course!

Jax: So, DrewDrew. Have you met any guys at the school? Drew: No. I've been avoiding the football players at all costs. No one really catches my eye.

Jaxon nods. Deep down he is happy because he's had a crush on her for a while now.

Drew: Remember on my birthday, when we kissed... TWICE! Jax: *laughs* We were young. Drew: And then you said you were in love with me. *Iaughs*

Jax: Yeah, so I kissed you again and was still in love. Drew: *giggles*

Drew: *joking tone* Do you still love me?

Jaxon hesitates before answering. He smirks and then looks into her eyes.

Jax: I was serious.

Drew leans back and stares into his eyes. She feels a flutter in her stomach and her heart is beating fast.

Jax: You make me feel something that I've never felt before. I try to suppress the feeling and ignore it but every time I see you or text you or call you, I feel it. I don't know. Maybe I am in love with you. Drew: I thought it was just me. My stomach is flipping now just listening to you.

Jax: Same. I wanted to say something earlier but I didn't want to ruin our friendship because it means a lot to me. Drew: I know that feeling.

Drew: You're literally my best friend. I'd do anything for you. Jax: Same here. Drew: So you really think you love me? Jax: I don't "think" I do. I know I do. I have ever since we met on that park bench and you hugged me when I was scared on my first day here. Drew: Yeah, I knew you were different then.

Jax: I'm not saying that we have to start dating like right now on the dot but I'd like to be.. maybe, more than friends. Like explore that and if it doesn't work, we can always go back to being pals.

Drew: I'd like that. So this is kind of like our third date. Jax: Third? Drew: Third. First date was on the playground. Second date was my birthday party and the third date is here right here, right now. Jax: Yeah. You're right. Drew: Shit, we have already kissed. Jax: Twice. Drew: *smiles* Drew: I won't talk to anyone but you. Jax: I won't talk to anyone but you either. Drew: Good because I don't want to have to drag anyone. Jax: *laughs* I can barely talk to teachers. Imagine me talking to another girl. Drew: *laughs* Jax: So are you going to think about it?

Drew: Absolutely! Jaxon: Every single day? Drew: All the damn time!

Drew smiles widely and looks down at her watch. Her mom sent her a message letting her know that she is at the front.

Drew: My mom just got here. Jaxon: Oh, no problem. We have practice here soon. I'll walk you up front. Come on.

Drew: *squealing* Call me when you get out of practice? Jaxon: Of course.

Drew: I'll see you later.

Jaxon: Bye DrewDrew.

Drew runs away waving and Jaxon goes to his mom and gets his practice gear out.

At practice, Jaxon can barely focus. Drew keeps running through his mind and he can't hide the feelings in his mind.

Later that night, Drew and her mom are sitting in the dining room having a talk about her day.

Morgan: You like him. I've always known. I see how you too look at each other. Drew: Is it that noticeable? Morgan: It's that noticeable. Am I right? Drew: ... Yes...

Morgan: Nothing to be ashamed of. A crush is a beautiful thing. Follow your heart always. Drew: How did you know daddy was the one? Morgan: Your dad honestly had to grow on me. We came from 2 completely different worlds and we hade to find that ground were we both meshed. But once I understood him and he understood me, things got better. Drew: Yeah? Morgan: Absolutely. We don't get along all the time but that's life. We work through it. Just go with your heart and your gut. They won't let you down.

so I was thinking of how amazing digital circus is based on I have no mouth and I must scream. I don't know much about the latter but saw the theory that one character is an NPC. Most say Jax and I won't dispute that. But if we draw parallels to the 6 characters and the 5 from ihnmaims is it possible we could deduce the odd one out. Kinger to the one who lost his wife gangle to the ape guy (sheerly basing this on the ongoing theme of facial disfigurement) regatta with the girl. Oh god. I USED to be a pro league player to clarify. These days I'm a retired league player (arams only every so often). I used to be primarily ADC and Support, Lulu, Miss Fortune, that kind of area of enchanter/hyper carry (back when MF was a hyper carry). But then also the juggernaut top was my JAM. Darius on Launch, Jax, Sion (AP sion of course), it was decrepit.
