it's been a couple of months, give or take, since negan was put in that cell in alexandria. a couple of months since rick asked him to take up the mantle of the temporary leader of the sanctuary ( or at least, he said it was temporary ). it hasn't been easy. nothing in this life is easy now, but this has been another level of difficulty that daryl was only slightly prepared for.

leading people isn't the problem. daryl has been rick's right hand, his second in command, for years and he's led their group in times where they had no one else. where rick grimes needs someone to fill in the gaps is where daryl dixon comes in. always. but the sanctuary is something different entirely. its people are quietly divided. and even more than that, they're the saviors, and the walls of the sanctuary still feel like they're echoing screams back to him day in and day out. it's not somewhere he wants to be. but daryl is a man of his word more than he is a man for himself.

sometimes he just needs to take a load off— get away from it all. so he comes out to places like this: a little lake nearby the sanctuary that provides some peace and quiet. out here, he can think without interruption. most of the time. at a certain point, something in him feels watched. he turns, glancing through the trees.

Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) is a private, HBCU in Charlotte. It is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, and the Council on Social Work Accreditation. The school awards Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Social Work, and Master of Social Work degrees.

It was established on April 7, 1867, as the Biddle Memorial Institute at a meeting of the Catawba Presbytery in the old Charlotte Presbyterian Church. Mary D. Biddle, a churchwoman, donated $1,400 to the school. In appreciation of this first contribution, friends requested that Mrs. Biddle name the newly established school; she did so in the name of her late husband, Captain Henry Jonathan Biddle, who had been mortally wounded during the Battle of Glendale. Samuel C. Alexander and Willis L. Miller saw the need for a school in the south and after the birth of the school, they were elected as some of the first teachers. Its corresponding women’s school was Scotia Seminary (now Barber-Scotia College).

In 1876, the charter was changed by the legislature of the State of North Carolina and the name became Biddle University, under which name the institution operated until 1923.

We realized that there was a lot about me she didn’t know. That told me two things. 1: When she sits in my chair, it’s all about business. 2. She didn’t know my story and made me think, there must be a lot of people who don’t. • So here are a few fun facts about my journey • I have degree in Math Education from @jcsuniversity. I have taught middle and high school math in 4 states (Charlotte, New York, Chicago, and DC) • I went to cosmetology school in Charlotte part time during my first year as a teacher, and while working part time at Banana Republic on the weekends. (still to date the longest 15 months of my life😩) • I buit my MD Clientele as a traveling stylist while living in New York and Chicago. Also, while teaching in DC once I moved back to the DMV. (I literally worked 12+ hours a day, 7 days a week🥴) • I am now on my 3rd career path, as a Salon Owner of @saloncestchic 💪🏽. I am still an educator at heart. So this year I will officially pick that hat back up to educate in the beauty industry. • When I was in the 6th grade and we had to make our “what do you want to be when you group figures” for our graduation ceremony, I couldn’t decide so I made two. A teacher and a Hair Stylist figure☺️🥰 • Learned something new about me? @jcsus' paul fired a bolt: They'd been out all day, from sunup to sun down, scavenging for supplies. To think he was foolish enough to take graveyard guard duty the night before as well- never one to say no to a person who needed their shift covered. It was only in times like this his walls began to drop, in private with the man he trusted most. Head would lull to a side, much like when they met all that time ago- finding comfort as he’d lean against him, dozing off to the sound of the music that played quietly in the truck as they made their way home.

daryl imagines this must be how some people used to feel before the outbreak began. there's barely a cloud in the sky to obscure the pinkish-purple summer sunset as it casts its neon glow through the truck windows, daryl's freckled hand resting atop the steering wheel and his eyes on the long stretch of road before them. music plays through the speakers at a low volume; it's something soft that daryl doesn't recognize, but it was there when they got in at the hilltop that morning and neither him nor paul have reached to turn it off or change it any of the times they've started up the truck to drive.

they've had a long day. supplies are always on the mind, and the sheer number of people that their communities are striving to support has them moving farther and farther out to scavange for anything they can get their hands on. it's exhausting work, but daryl and paul are both fit for it.

perhaps it was a little selfish, the way he'd volunteered to come out here with paul before anyone else even had the chance, but as long as the work is getting done it doesn't really matter who's doing it, right? eugene can handle the saviors for a day by himself. all they're doing is tending to dead crops, anyway.

paul's head comes to a rest on his shoulder and daryl takes his lower lip between his teeth, biting at it thoughtfully. he's still not used to this, but his free hand moves a little closer to him in response to the show of affection.     ‘ tired? ’     he asks quietly as though he doesn't know the answer. his companion is drained. daryl can tell. he's not oblivious to the fact that jesus has been pushing himself for well over a full day now— maybe even two. while daryl can't deny that he's sacrificed sleep for their people many times, there's no reason his partner should continue to resist catching up on his rest.

Valerie Kinloch (January 30, 1974) is a writer, educator, and academic administrator. She is the president of the Johnson C. Smith University. She served as the Renée and Richard Goldman Dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Education.

She is from Charleston, South Carolina. She earned a BA in English and literature from Johnson C. Smith University. She earned an MA in English and African-American literature and a Ph.D. in English from Wayne State University.

For three and a half years, she was an assistant professor of English focusing on composition and rhetoric at the University of Houston–Downtown. She worked as an associate professor of English education at the Teachers College, Columbia University. She was an associate dean and professor at the Ohio State University. In July 2017, she became the Renée and Richard Goldman Dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Education.
