Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure (2001)

I must be fair and honest while reviewing Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure and admit it isn’t half-bad considering everything. Make no mistake. This 2001 sequel to the 1955 Disney animated film has no business existing. The plot is thin and much of its plot simply repeats what we've seen before but in reverse. Still, it’s good looking, with some affectionate nods to the classic (better) film. There's just enough here to entertain the little ones.

In a story that is much more “Scamp’s Adventure” than “Lady and the Tramp II”, the couple’s pup, Scamp (voiced by Scott Wolf ) longs for a life on the streets. When Scamp spots a group of freedom-loving junkyard dogs under the leadership of Buster (Chazz Palminteri), he runs away from home and quickly befriends the lovely Angel (Alyssa Milano).

I was surprised by how good-looking a film this is. The quality of animation is close to the original’s and that’s a big feat for something released straight-to-DVD. Digital painting and a short running time (which means less to animate) have paid off here. There are a few noticeable CGI models here and there but you’ll also see plenty of difficult shots where the camera spins or multiple perfectly on-model dogs move around. Well done.

I said the plot is familiar but there’s enough new material or twists to give it somewhat of an identity. You're used to contrived scenarios like the one in 101 Dalmatians 2 to bring back everyone you liked before. In Scamp's Adventure the returning crowds are neighbors, relatives, or - in the case of those 2 Italian restaurant owners - live nearby. It's more organic. Let's not kid ourselves. These references to the original are there to make you nostalgic but the different take on the dog spaghetti-eating scenes amused me. I'll also credit the film’s villain for feeling much more realistic than I’m accustomed to seeing in these Disney sequels. Scamp's desire to be "free" may be stupid from the perspective of someone who knows better but you can understand how a dumb pup would want something other than domesticated life. It leads to (mostly) natural conflicts, which make Scamp's Adventure more digestible.

While I am ultimately choosing to give the film a positive review, on a different day I might swing the other way. It's a musical with no memorable songs. The romance between Scamp and Angel is unnecessary and only reminds you of a better movie you could be watching. As a sequel, this adds nothing to the world it's set in and too often repeats what's been done before. If not in the 1955 picture, in something else. This is barely more than a couple of episodes of a TV series stitched together. I doubt it would pass the hour-long mark if it weren't for the unnecessary dog catchers and those lame musical numbers. None of this is fresh or anything anyone could ever call a favorite. Still, it's a way to keep the kids busy for a bit.

Captain Simian & The Space Monkeys - Splitzy's Choice - September 21 1996 Written by Pamela Hickey and Dennys McCoy - Directed by Brad Rader The ship is damaged and the crew goes to a planet to get more flux, to repair the ship before it is too late.   The title of this episode refers to the Orangutan  Dr. Splitz / Splitzy splitting into 2 separate Space Monkeys. Which is a common trope of having a hero learn to love themselves. Buffy The Vampire Slayer did this with Xander in the S05E03 The Replacement, which aired 4 years after Splitzy's Choice. But something that is very cool, is the opening feels very much like some of the stuff in the first episode of Firefly, The Train Job, and also the heist at the beginning of the Firefly movie Serenity. 101 Dalmatians II: Patch’s London Adventure

I never thought I’d ever describe Mulan 2 as original and daring, but it’s starting to feel that way. 101 Dalmatians II: Patch’s London Adventure feels more like a rip-off made to cash in on a desperate audience’s nostalgia than a sequel.

One year after their escape from Cruella de Vil's clutches, the 101 Dalmatians, their pets Roger (Tim Bentinck) and Anita (Jodi Benson), and Nanny (Mary MacLeod) are leaving London to go live on a farm. When they depart, they accidentally leave behind TV-obsessed Patch (Bobby Lockwood). When he bumps into his hero, the heroic cinematic canine Thunderbolt (voiced by Barry Bostwick), they set off on a media-grabbing adventure. Meanwhile, cured Cruella de Vil (Susanne Blakeslee) begins reverting to her old self when she sees an art exhibit of black spots on a white canvas.

I had hope when this film began. The re-introduction of Cruella is cleverly handled. She’s been put through the wringer thanks to her dognapping scheme being exposed (I’m not entirely sure how that happened considering the only witnesses were dogs… did the dalmatians testify in court?) but still craves fur. When she spots that abstract art exhibit, it's funny. She becomes obsessed with dots and the artist (Martin Short as Lars) thinks he’s found his muse. Looks like they spent those 42 years polishing the script!

My hopes were quickly dashed. This plot is nothing special. 101 II is a little more than a jazzed-up episode of the 1997 TV series with a bigger budget and a lot of material borrowed from the Disney Classic. The new villain isn't interesting. We don’t get to know any of the Dalmatians besides Patch. No surprise but it’s like if Gremlins 3 followed some random Mogwai instead of Gizmo. Something's missing. This sentiment also applies to the visuals. In a way, this movie looks just as good, if not better than the original with its frequently sketchy lines… but this makes it look generic.

I hate to keep comparing the two, but let’s examine some facts. This movie was made decades after the first. It’s released on home video and depends on you having seen the first one to understand what’s going on. It’s aimed solely at children whose untrained eyes won't notice the difference and haven’t seen enough movies to recognize how predictable this tale is.

The humor is broad and there aren’t any chances taken character-wise. I noticed at least a couple of plot holes or mistakes and I wish I could give away a truly baffling moment at the end but I can’t so let me say this: When Pongo, Perdita, Anita, and Roger are off-screen, something big happens. When they learn about it, they’re not surprised at all. How come?

The animation looks pretty good, but overall, the film is just the same pieces you’ve seen before, shuffled around, and tacked onto a generic story. I don’t hate this movie; it just fails to rouse any enthusiasm at all. If you do choose to check it out, stick around to the end of the credits. There’s a scene worth waiting for.
