Tumblr media
This is the Buddy for October 16th. I quite like it. It does look like a two-page spread in a manga I'd enjoy. I'm a big fan.
I am a nerd. I've always been, really, although I'm not blind to the annoying issues there are whatever it is people call nerd culture.
When I was a kid, there was a writer I read a bit of from time to time. I'm not going to name names because I don't want to insult particular people on this tumblr, especially since he doesn't seem to deserve it as far as personality goes.
He published a book, a sci fi novel with a lot of references to action movies of the time. Then he put out an RPG adaptation of the novel, which was what I got my hands on. It seemed like he was into hard science fiction, I was impressed, thought he was a smart guy. I eventually forgot about him until a few years back, when I found out what he had been doing since then.
After the books, he published some comics serving as a sequel/side story to the novel. They were pretty influenced by Rob Liefeld and Jim Lee, comics that my nerd friends usually mocked for their trashy art and horny storylines. And after that, he moved on to manga-style comics ripping off stuff like Dragon Ball, Yu Yu Hakusho and El Hazard. After that he made a set of superhero graphic novels with manga influences, and later a fantasy RPG-inspired webcomic.
So when you see the guy's body of work, it seems like he's just ripping off what's popular. He started out referencing movies of the time, then during the alternative comics boom of the nineties, he turned those hard sci fi concepts into edgy superhero stuff. When manga started really getting big, he forgot about superheroes and started doing more "mature" manga stuff (or at least what we considered to be mature back then. Manga was a lot more adult than superheroes, because of the violence, sex, book length, production model...). Then when Marvel started putting out movies, superheroes were cool again, and he's acting as if he's always been a fan. And now he's following the leader with something RPG and webtoon inspired.
So, looking at the guy, it feels like rather than being a fan who can tell when a work is quality despite it being disposable pop culture, he just looks like a drone spending money and time on whatever it is that's being published, and then scoffing at his old interests when the new stuff comes along.
Of course, even though I don't see myself that way, I am kind of the same. I got into comics during the Kurt Busiek era trade paperback boom - I wouldn't follow monthly releases, but bought the complete stories in a proper bookstore. And although I'm not from the same generation Jack Kirby's original fans are, I got really into his comics by reading reprints and digital publications - I only became a fan because someone decided to publish them.
Even when it comes to manga, I'm not exactly only appreciating quality work - I read it on e-readers (I've had four), which work great for older manga (and for ones that have an extensive and easy to find digital library), so I read a lot of Osamu Tezuka, Shotaro Ishinomori and Jiro Kuwata. I'm surprised when I go to bookstores and find the manga I assumed was super obscure available to everyone.
I could say the big difference between me and the writer guy is that I can percieve a work's quality regardless of how much hype there is around it. But even that is a line of thought that was drilled into me by the companies that decide what to publish. I can read a pirated italian translation of an obscure Osamu Tezuka manga on my generic e-reader and pat myself on the back for being clever and getting it, but that just means when a giant corporation starts airing the anime adaptation of a manga homaging Tezuka, I'll be more likely to watch it. And, even mentioning the guy's name on Tumblr, I'm advertising it (by influencing search engines into bringing his name up).
But, despite that, I still enjoy that stuff a lot. I think there's real quality into the work people who create comics and manga put in, and that it's an underappreciated artform. I could say, be it referring to comics from ninety years ago, or from a writer my own age, that the quality's there regardless of the hype. I read the RPG world story by the writer I mentioned and I think, sure, he's just following the lead of a bunch of Isekai stories and webtoons with a similar style, but, still, he's putting a lot of himself into the story. Whether he realizes it, or not.

~(bruce’s pov)~
.
.
.
.
.
Almost everyone around you is off. You couldn't discern what but, it just… off..
The most noticeable one is Alfred, you haven't seen him like this since that horrible night … Is it around that time again? Perhaps you should give him the day- no, month off. After all, he'd given up his freedom to your family…
But unfortunately for now, you have League business to attend to.
.
.
.
.
Jiro Osamu… after his probation, proudly took the mantle of Batman of Japan, asked to come to the JL headquarters for an ‘urgent’ problem.
Though the problem seems to be bi-colored bears with a hint of a red glint, sneaking around… But with the help of the heroes in Japan and testimonies of some civilians.
The Justice League(the main group mostly) decided to investigate for a bit. At first, nothing seemed to be wrong… The spike of people going absent/missing say otherwise. Everything in your body, your mind says something is obviously wrong. Along with what seemed to be bodies found all around Japan popped up.
That the bears have something to do with it… But how? How do bi-colored bears fit in the missing people case? The autopsies haven't stated or implied any animal attacks…
Osamu mentioned that the adults who'd gone missing had something in common- children who attended {Hope’s Peak Academy}, specifically the elementary division…
Your heart hurts for those children who had lost their parents, and to parents who lost their child before their time. You know the pain of both…
Then a league member brought something to you, a cardigan and a lanyard. A dull yellow cardigan with pins replacing the buttons and the lanyard almost completely covered with stickers. Saying that the lanyard found had a school id, [Name] Nakamura the Ultimate Caregiver…
You couldn't place the feeling you have. It's like how you felt about Jason's death, but confused… When did they leave to Japan? When did they grow up, only to be found dead?
You only remembered the child you briefly talked to during that dinner, Alfred looked disappointed.
But… the more you looked at the id, the more you saw your old friend…. The one who left a voicemail about catching up and meeting each other's children. About how she couldn't wait for you to get to know her little family… jokingly saying that her child wanted to be friends with your family “Like how we were when we were younger!”.
It's one of many things that consistently pops up in your head before sleep. How joyful she sounded, before she and her wife were ripped away like your parents. Leaving a too mature child who should've been crying uncontrollably, like you had been.
Maybe that was why you had walked past them? It was horrible of you to do so, but you had thought they didn't need you. You felt they hadn't needed you, that they understood what had happened…
But seeing them dead?
It completely broke you… The child you thought was always fine and safe was found dead with only their belongings found. You never thought about them before, but seeing the cardigan and lanyard being all there is left? Hurts… hurts so much beyond what it should be.
Have you really missed all the milestones? Have you really not thought of them for eleven years?? You missed over a decade of birthdays and holidays to share with them…
Guilt is eating you alive, but unlike the other times, this feels like it's eating you down to the bone! That it's eating your muscles and nerves that have been exposed, like maggots wriggling in your skin...
You could practically hear a chorus asking the same thing you thought, how could you?? How could you ignore a child in your care when you never did before? When you brought in child after child? How could you forget your godchild? YOUR child??
Akemi and Chou are probably cursing your name, rolling in their graves for forgetting their- no your child.
You don't remember coming home, but getting out of the Batmobile.
.
.
.
Why was Damian behind a stalactite? And why is Alfred and Tim staring at him?
You only let out a heavy sigh.
“What's going on here?”

chapter one – i'll probably get fired

Tumblr media
07:07.
The time your phone clock showed.
You stared at your phone while thinking about how cold it would be outside the comfort of your blanket.
‘If I get up, I’ll get reaaaally cold.’
07:08.
‘If I don’t get up, I’ll stay warm.’
30 seconds of quietness passes by.
‘If I get up, I have to go to work.’
07:09.
You set your phone down next to you, while positioning yourself to lay flat on your back, giving you the perfect access to stare at your blank, white ceiling.
‘If I don’t get up… will I get fired?’
You shift your eyes to your closet, eyeing down your black MSBY quarter-zip sweater. With one dramatic, yet tired sigh, you get up from bed, and finally start your day.
‘I’ll definitely get fired.’
About three months ago, you received a call from Hamamoto Jiro, the head manager for the Division 1 V. League team, the MSBY Black Jackals. You had applied to become a part of the public relations team, specifically the media team, due to needing a job to hold you over while you had started your last year of university.
Yet, you never actually expected to… get the job.
After slipping on your quarter-zip, a pair of straight legged jeans, and your Adidas Sambas, you checked your phone.
07:37.
“aaauuuuuuuuggggghhhhhhh.” A low, annoyed sigh was let out. Your shift started in 23 minutes, and for some reason, you thought you had enough time to make a stop at Natsukashii, your favorite cafe.
You quietly muttered to yourself as you grabbed the keys to your Toyota GT-86. Driving to work always brought you a sense of tranquility, as the roads were usually empty.
When you were about 5 minutes into your 18 minute car ride, your music stopped abruptly, due to your ringtone sounding. You look at your carplay.
Tumblr media
You answered the call with no complaints. “Hello?”
Atsumu was the first person you truly became friends with at work, due to you both matching each other’s vibes, yet in somewhat contrasting ways. He has a humongous ego, and you’re able to immediately humble someone. Need I say more?
“Good mornin’, [Y/N].” A moderately tired voice spoke over the phone, quickly followed by a short yawn. You could hear volleyballs hitting the floor in the background.
“Good morning, Atsumu. Aren’t you supposed to be, like, practicing?” You asked sarcastically.
“Ha-ha.” He grumbled over the phone while rolling his eyes. “I’m takin’ a coffee break right now.”
You hear him sip his coffee loudly, and before you could speak again, he beats you to it. “You comin’ in today?”
“Yeeeaaahhhh.” You elongated. “I decided I didn’t want to get fired just yet.”
You hear a brief chuckle over the phone line. “How long until ya get here?” You look at the time.
07:45.
“I’ll be there in 10.”
“Perfect, see ya soon.” And with that, the phone call ended. As your music started playing again, you decided to try and speed up a little bit to get to work faster.
07:52.
You look at the time on your phone as you exit your car and head for the doors to the main entrance of MSBY’s training gym. ‘Beat the ETA by 3 minutes.’ you thought playfully to yourself.
After walking through the main entrance, and to the employee’s lounge, you clocked in. Now, you have 8 hours before your shift ends. With that, you walk to the main gym where 12 of the Jackals were playing a practice set, not including Atsumu. As you begin to walk over to him, you take note of who’s playing.
‘Hinata’s on that side… Bokuto’s on the other… yeesh.’ Your eyes then land on Meian Shūgo, the captain of the Jackals. You quickly trail your eyes up and down his handsome body.
‘SMASH.’ is the first thing that comes to your mind when you see him.
“How are you already this horny, and it's barely 8 o’clock?” Atsumu says as you take a seat beside him on the bench. “Excuse me? I’m not horny. What could you possibly be talking about?” You say as you’re holding a hand over your heart in an offended, joking manner.
“Nah, I seen the way yer lookin’ at Meian. Keep it in yer pants, [Y/N].”
You leaned a bit closer to Atsumu, with your lips close to his ears. “Look at the way his sweat drips down his body, the way he bites his lip before spiking the ball, and if you move your eyes down his body a bit more, then-” You whispered seductively, yet stopped as Atsumu shoved your head away.
“Enough.” He sighs, his hand palming his face.
You begin to laugh at his somewhat annoyed state. “Just kidding!”
“No yer not.”
“Yeah, no, you’re right.” You spoke in defeat, shifting your eyes back to Meian. “Kinda sucks that he’s a bit too old, y’know?”
“No, I don’t know.”
You slowly turn to look at Atsumu with a disgusted face. After a few seconds of staring at one another, you get up and begin walking to the door. “K bye don’t ever talk to me again.” He waved you off, and just as soon as you were halfway to the exit…
SMACK
You instinctively cover your right cheek, and look down at the volleyball that’s bouncing. Up and down.
‘Ain’t no way…’
You look at Hinata, and he’s already on his way to you.
“[L/N], I’M SO SO SO SORRY! I DIDN’T MEAN FOR THAT TO HAPPEN!” You sneak a quick glance at Atsumu, who’s stifling his laugh.
You let out a smile. “Don’t sweat it, Hinata. It barely hurts!”
“Stop yer lyin’!” Atsumu yelled out from the bench, finally letting some of his laughter go.
“Shut up, piss blonde!” You yelled, earning laughs from a couple people. While Hinata was still in a small panic over his unintentional infliction of pain towards you, Sakusa had already brought you an ice pack from the coaches office.
“Ah, thank you, Sakusa.” You spoke as you politely bowed your head.
He nodded. And then… he just… walked away?
‘Weird.’ You thought as you lifted the ice pack to your cheek, not taking your eyes off Sakusa. You liked him, though. He wasn’t that talkative, and you thought his bendy wrists were really cool.
“[l/nnnnnn].” The weak voice brought you away from your thoughts. You look down in curiosity, just to see Hinata literally on his knees, bowing to you, with Bokuto and Inunaki cackling in the background. “imsorryireallydidntmeantohurtyouiloveyoupleaseforgiveme.”
“I already forgave you, get up.” You groaned, placing a hand on your hip. “My hair is gonna turn gray because of you!”
As Hinata began to stand up, still being teased by Bokuto and Inunaki, you left the gym.
It was time to get to work, and monitor all of the MSBY Black Jackals social media accounts, starting off with Instagram. Having all of the official accounts on your phone was your biggest flex.
As you went to MSBY’s profile, you could see a story was posted. This brought you to a panic, as you don’t remember posting anything, and although some others had access to the account, you were the one to do the posting and communications.
When you clicked on it, this is what you saw:
Tumblr media
Your eyes widened, and you immediately deleted it. You ran to the gym, and screamed: “ATSUMU!!!”

So I'm reading Bat-Manga!: The Secret History of Batman in Japan and a few essays surrounding the Batmanga. I've also read the Batmanga itself and
Y'know, a lot of western takes on Japanese Batman are weird.
The actual Jiro Kuwata Batman manga was very much just a series of perfectly ordinary Golden Age Batman stories, with a bit of a scifi or supernatural twist. The difference was more in art style than narrative. If you like Golden Age or early Silver Age (pre-Dick Grayson leaving for college) Batman you should check it out, it is more of that.
Still, in a lot of retrospective media and as addressed in Grant Morrison's run via their use of Lord Death Man as a "weird anime supervillan" and especially his characterization of Jiro Osamu / the Batman of Japan, it's sometimes falsely remembered or implied to be this weird weeaboo anime Gundams and Sailor Moon concept of Japanese media. You know, it's a very "Weird Japanese Thing" approach, like they're confusing the Batmanga for Japanese Spider-Man, or generalizing Japanese spider-Man when that show was very influenced by Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and other Japanese superhero media of the time, rather than being representative of "how Japan does Spider-Man." It was made in the mold of a specific media trend and era of superhero writing, not a universal thing, is my point.
In fact, the main differences I personally see in Kuwata's Batman are, while comic book Batman's villains often reflected American social fears of the time (academics in the cold war stock character sense, organized criminals, foreigners and the mentally ill), Kuwata's villains are usually mostly-benevolent scientists who become possessed by aliens or irradiated or whatever and end up shooting rays at people, or weird supernatural shit like a girl who's been possessed by an ooker spooker. My point is, it's not very "out there" at all, and while it tells original stories, thematically it's a pretty faithful adaptation of the core Batman concepts.
Dick Grayson is the other major difference in that he's written to be more of a shonen hero or side-kick, in that he generally always has whatever skill the narrative needs him to have in that moment (like medical expertise), but he also feels BIG EMOTIONS. Dick isn't allowed to pull too much focus in the manga but when he does it's because he's having BIG FEELINGS like outrage or infatuation. This incidentally makes him my favourite version of Grayson lol.
So, when later American works try to approach Japanese Batman with this strange Orientalist post-Power Rangers lens, I just get this vibe, like...
Wielding my powerful batana sword forged by ancient swordsmith Koumori Henfuku (蝙蝠 蝙蝠) I summon the Tsukuyomi no Mikoto, kami-god of the moon, and become the Night! By the light of the moon, I'll punish you! Now to force you to eat your handoburoga of justice, Joker-san! I press the transform button in powerful Batto Mobile and it becomes -- the BATVENGA MOBILE ARMOUR SUIT! Beware, criminal! Bat Action, Go!
And that's strange because a cool Japanese dude already did Batman but Japanese for DC and that is absolutely not at all like anything he made lol. He told solid classic western superhero stories and it feels, I don't know, bizarre to imply anything but.
