Today is Look Up at the Sky Day. Let’s go out and do some “skying” as John Constable did.
John Constable (English, 1776 –1837), known for his atmospheric landscape paintings, was always interested in the sky, believing that the sky was "the key note, the standard of scale, and the chief organ of sentiment" in a landscape painting. Constable made full-scale oil sketches, in addition to numerous observational studies of landscapes and clouds. For the sky studies, he added notes often on the back of the sketches, describing the weather conditions, direction of light, and time of day. His observation was also scientific as his annotations reveal his knowledge on meteorological terminology. (Summarized from Wikipedia.)
Cloud study (sky study) Constable, John, 1776-1837, English [artist] 13 x 18.5 cm. English paintings ca.1819 Repository: Gordon, A. L. - Collection HOLLIS number: olvwork185718

Posted @withregram • @artoutlaws Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 - 1669): Philosopher in Meditation, 1632, oil on oak panel, 28 x 34 cm, Musée du Louvre, Paris . . “Philosopher in Meditation” by Rembrandt depicts three figures in a partially vaulted interior that is dominated by a wooden spiral staircase. The architecture includes stone, brick and wood, with arched elements (window, vault, doors) that create an impression of monumentality. The most conspicuous figure is an old man seated at a table in front of a window, his head bowed and his hands folded in his lap. An old woman on the right is tending a fire in an open hearth. There is also a third figure of a woman standing in the stairs facing the viewer, but she is virtually invisible in the painting’s dark hue created by the aging of the varnish. While the traditional title, 'Philosopher in Meditation' has to a large extent been responsible for the painting's popularity, it is iconographically untenable. The painting shows none of the conspicuous attributes of scholarship or philosophy - books, globe, scientific instruments, etc. - and the presence of at least one other figure involved in domestic tasks does not fit in with the solitude associated with study and meditation. A plausible interpretation of the scene is Tobit and Anna waiting for the return of their only son, Tobias, a story derived from the Book of Tobit, one of Rembrandt's favorite Old Testament sources.. This is supported by an 18th-century source identifying a Rembrandt painting of exactly the same format representing a "Composition with Tobit and a winding stair." Rembrandt had already painted this scene in another version in 1630. . . . . #rembrandtvanrijn #renemagritte #johnconstable #johnatkinsongrimshaw #edvardmunch #paulklee #henrirousseau #giorgione #jacqueslouisdavid #pietmondrian #caspardavidfriedrich #camillepissarro #gustavecourbet #theodoregericault #marcelduchamp #pieterbruegel #artemisiagentileschi #titian #hieronymusbosch #wassilykandinsky #diegorivera #grantwood #elgreco #markrothko #janvaneyck #georgiaokeeffe #renemagritte #franciscogoya #georgesseurat #diegovelazquez #edwardhopper (at The Foreign Correspondents' Club, Hong Kong) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQEC--eD3P6/?utm_medium=tumblr

Stoke-by-Nayland, John Constable, 1836, Art Institute of Chicago: European Painting and Sculpture
Stoke-by-Nayland depicts the subject matter that the landscape painter John Constable explored throughout his life: the Suffolk countryside of his youth. Constable based his landscapes on countless studies and sketches that he often took back to his London studio to expand and then finish. Of Stoke-by-Nayland, he wrote to a friend: “What say you to a summer morning? July or August, at eight or nine o’clock, after a slight shower during the night.” To achieve the effect of sparkling wetness and a freshness of earth and air, Constable painted as much with a palette knife as with a brush, flecking the surface with white highlights and sketching and scraping the picture into existence. The deliberate ruggedness of his style echoes nature’s rough spontaneity. The unpolished execution is reminiscent of the full-scale sketches in oil that Con-stable made for earlier exhibition paintings; however, no more fully treated version is known, and the rich color suggests that this is a finished work, done in the artist’s late style. Constable’s emphasis on surface brushwork and texture in his effort to record the constantly shifting effects of natural light on land and sky exerted enor-mous influence on French artists like Eugène Delacroix and a younger generation of French painters, the Impressionists.
