The Emcee

The Emcee starts the musical speaking to the audience purely in the role of an actual emcee at an in-universe cabaret club, inviting us into the world of the show and telling us "Leave your troubles outside!". However, as the show progresses, he takes on the role of an omniscient narrator, commenting and singing about the personal drama of our protagonists, directing all of his commentary directly to the audience.  The songs grow darker as the show tackles more & more with its time and place -- specifically, Weimar Germany right before the rise of the Nazis. The Emcee sings darkly satirical songs about anti-Semitism and the rise of German nationalism. By the end of the show, he seems to represent Germany itself -- in some versions, he grows more grotesque and Aryan as the plot progresses, in others sadder and weaker before wearing a concentration camp uniform. He ends the show by addressing us in the audience one more time, asking us "So -- where are your troubles now? Forgotten?"

When asked how The Creator (the player, who is their god) sees them, he thinks about it and says: "What if we lived in a white box with two windows... And the box had buttons... and a magic wand! And The Creator used that to examine our lives... And control what we do!"  This dialogue references the original white Nintendo DS that the game was made for.  ...Jowee's idea is immediately dismissed as nonsense lol.

Shimura Otae

The Fourth Wall is the plaything of the Gintama cast. They will break it, rebuild it, break it again over and over. The anime team expertly translates manga only jokes to make sense in the anime. But the most tumblr famous example of this must be the time they broke a sound effect to save Otae from a rocket punch (it makes just as much sense in context) and then Otae married said sound effect. You know, this meme:
