Brief Look at Judge Dredd Novels, Part X: Dredd vs Death by Gordon Rennie
So. We've... skipped ahead a bit. About eight years, to be precise. And there's absolutely nothing major that we need to talk about that happened in the interim which might have an impact on how we read the decaying urban hellscape of Mega-City One. I mean, yeah, I suppose I was born in that gap and am currently less than a year old at the time of the novel's publication, but why are you trying to pin all this post-apocalyptic stuff on me?
Oh alright, in the grand tradition of "science fiction released in the year 2003," let's stop playing coy and simply admit that it's tough to read Dredd vs Death, the first of Black Flame's newly launched set of Judge Dredd novels, without viewing it through the prism of 9/11 and the Iraq War.
The most obvious culprit here is undoubtedly the Church of Death's attempt to break the Dark Judges out of their imprisonment by crashing an h-wagon into the tower above said prison, but even the nature of the Church as a decentralised group of religious fundamentalists waging warfare in urban environments feels pointed.
Similarly, Rennie includes a moment in which Dredd ruminates on the vampires' undead status depriving them of the meagre rights possessed by an average citizen of Mega-City One, evoking Donald Rumsfeld's infamous categorisation of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay as the "living dead." More literally, the presence of hordes of zombies ties the novel into a post-9/11 fascination with those particular members of the undead, from 28 Days Later through to Paul W. S. Anderson's Resident Evil films and Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead.
All of this, however, makes Dredd vs. Death sound considerably more complex and nuanced than it actually is. I mean, that's not to say that it's completely without depth, but it is, first and foremost, concerned with serving as a novelisation of Rebellion Developments' contemporaneous PS2/Xbox/Gamecube/PC game of the same name.
Putting all my cards on the table here, I'm forced to admit that I've never actually played the game, but it's nevertheless quite apparent that Rennie has had to do some finessing of the narrative in order to better measure up to the different standards inherent to the change in medium from video game to prose. Some of these tricks work quite well, including giving Anderson a more active role than she seems to have had in the original game.
Particularly delicious is the reframing of the zombies' attack on the megamall from the point of view of a "living mannequin" caught up in the chaos, a nice way of adding tension to what was presumably just another level in the game itself. Added on to this is the cute touch of having the living mannequin's brother-in-law, referenced in his internal monologue, show up later in the novel for a similar sequence.
But ultimately, once it comes down to the climactic showdown with the four Dark Judges, it's impossible to avoid the impression that we're simply watching a progression of boss battles committed to the printed page. They're very well-translated, mind you, and the decision to distribute the boss battles between Anderson and Giant as well as Dredd is a characteristically shrewd one, but it becomes very clear that any post-9/11 depth one might care to read into it is largely incidental.
Still, the whole thing has an endearingly propulsive, runaway freight train quality that helps it avoid the fate of overstaying its welcome, so it's hard to complain too much. As far as novelisations of video games go - a genre in which I haven't dabbled too much, but that I find hard to believe contains too many gems - my intuition tells me that this is likely to be one of the stronger examples.
Current ranking:
Dreddlocked
Deathmasques
Wetworks
Silencer
The Medusa Seed
Dread Dominion
Dredd vs Death
Cursed Earth Asylum
The Hundredfold Problem

Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death
Developer: Rebellion Publisher: Rebellion Rrp: £4.69 (Gog.com) and 5.59 (Steam) Released: 17th October 2003 Available on: Steam and Gog.com Played Using: Mouse and Keyboard Approximate game length: 5 Hours Long before Sylvester Stallone ever donned and made a mockery of the name, Judge Dredd was a property that most everyone knew. Spawning from the British comic 2000AD in the mid 1970's, his legacy is still going strong despite two god awful movies. The question is, does this game live up to the name? Judge Dredd Vs Death is a first person shooter where you take the role of the titular Judge Dredd. Its probably best to give a little background for those not in the know. The game is set in a dystopian future where the planet has become a radioactive wasteland, the majority of the people live in Mega-Cities, in the case of this game it focuses primarily on Mega-City One. To keep the peace each city has Street Judges who act as law enforcement, judge, jury and executioner. The most famous (or infamous) of these is Judge Dredd.
youtube
Its not that often I talk about options menus, rarer still that I essentially start a review speaking on one, but in this case I can't not talk about this. I like many other gamers on PC will immediately go to the graphics options and crank them up as far as I think my system will handle. Now considering the age of this game I had no doubts that my rig could handle it at full settings. Turns out the game disagrees, if I turn the anti-aliasing on at all the game crashes to the desktop. I also recommend going through the controls too as there some... old fashioned ideas as to what buttons are used. We all know FPS's and the basic mechanics they generally use. Well Judge Dredd has something extra, the 'Law Meter'. The law meter shows how well you're doing as a Judge, the higher it is the better. However if it gets too low a special task force comes after you. I'll talk a little later on about how the law meter rises and falls. Going back on to the subject of FPS mechanics, there are actually quite a few different types the most common of which are the Halo and the Call of Duty style. In this case the designers have opted to go for a more 'Halo' approach. Judge Dredd comes complete with a shield that regenerates if he goes without being hit for a short period. Also, like Halo you can only carry two weapons at a time.
As I mentioned earlier the Judges of Mega city One act as judge, jury and executioner. As such, you can imagine that at some point you can and will arrest people. Well you'd be imagining correctly, of course you can't just arrest anyone... actually you can but doing so lowers the law meter. Most of the time the ones you need to arrest are obvious, I mean, they tend to attack you so that’s a fairly big give away. There are others though who don't just attack you on sight, such as some spray painters. You have no need to go after them but you can if you so wish. Doing so doesn't have any direct influence on the story campaign of the game other than to increase the rating you get at the level. This rating however does unlock more skins and levels to play with in the multiplayer which is dead so your only real choice is to play against the bots. As much as I love the idea of the arresting system I wish it made more sense. One enemy shot me and when I arrested them they were given a sentence of four months in jail. Another didn't shoot or resist arrest and was only spray painting and what did they get? Life with no parole... seriously?! I know the the arrest sheets must be randomized but come one! Generally the gunplay in this game is fine, the audio and visual feedback is sufficient enough that it doesn't feel anemic. However, there are some things regarding the weapons that I cannot forgive. For example, if you zoom in using the sniper rifle you can't fully zoom back out without changing weapons, AND EVEN THEN the sniper rifle will immediately put you back into zoom mode as soon as its equipped.
Only carrying two weapons may seem quite limiting but the game mitigates this somewhat by having multiple ammunition types. Ricochet to bounce off walls and incendiary to cause damage over time just to name two. There is a flaw to this though, for starters the ammo is only available for certain weapons. But secondly the game uses the mouse wheel to scroll through the ammo types rather than being used to switch between the weapons. As I played through the obvious flaws just kept piling up, a major one being that the game doesn't respond to button inputs, specifically jumping. I press the button and the vocalization of jumping occurs but not the actual jump. In some cases I've pressed the button four times before a jump actually happened. There also seems to be a small amount of lag with melee combat between the button input and the actual attack. Several of the maps can often feel confusing and sprawling, and not in the good way as all the areas look very similar to one another. This isn't helped by the objectives occasionally being 'arrest person x' when you have no idea what they look like, so you end up arresting everyone. The last thing I'll mention (but its by no means the last issue I have) is the AI. I found while playing through the game was that the enemy AI is a bit on the... simple side, regardless of which difficulty setting the game is on. This is an especially glaring issue when you consider that Unreal 2 and Call of Duty (the original one) were released in the same year and both had far superior AI.
If you tire of the story mode (and I'm sure you will because it gets really repetitive) you can always play the arcade mode, but to be honest its not worth playing as the AI is even worse than in the main game and its not really fun to actually play. And no review of this game would be complete without at least mentioning the very blatant product placement in the game. One has to wonder how much Red Bull paid to have their companies brand all over this game, and more to the point, if the cost was actually worth it. I can say that having played this game my desire for a Red Bull has never been lower.
Honestly unless you're a die hard Judge Dredd fan I can't think of any reason to recommend this, in fact I'm pretty sure that a die hard fan would tell you not to play it. Which is odd because this is definitely a game where having some knowledge of the property its based on is needed to gain any real enjoyment. A great example of this is in the very title of the game itself. To anyone who knows nothing of the franchise I would imagine that it sounds like you'd be fighting the Grim Reaper. This isn't the case though, you fight against Judge Death, a Dark Judge who believes that all life is a crime. The game never explains any of this though, just expecting the player to just 'know' that. If this appeals to you perhaps try; Quake Unreal 2: Awakening Sin

A new Dredd game? Rebellion CEO hints at new 2000 AD title on the horizon
Rebellion has been doing fairly well lately with their run of Sniper Elite titles - well enough that it’s easy to forget that the British company responsible for Lt. Karl Fairburne’s European adventures also holds the rights to make games based on 2000 AD comics.
During E3, VG247’s Kirk McKeand spoke with Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley, who hinted at some 2000 AD irons being in the fire - but he wouldn’t go into any detail, at least not yet.
The most recognizable 2000 AD property is probably Judge Dredd, which Rebellion adapted into videogame form with the first-person shooter Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death back in 2003. And while Dredd - both the character and the universe - is a very natural fit for videogames, 2000 AD has some other interesting properties as well.
I am the law? Probably not, but here's our list of the best superhero games on PC.
Rebellion announced last year that they were opening up the 2000 AD license to pitches from other developers, and now it seems like they’re almost at the point that they can clue the world at large in on what they have planned.
“We have agreements with a number of different people,” Kingsley told McKeand. “There may be announcements coming in the next few months. That’s very exciting, we have some really cool stuff being worked on.”

Judge Dredd could once again be returning to the world of video games, after rights owner Rebellion suggested that a game could be in the pipeline. There hasn’t been a major video game adaptation of the 2000 AD comic book character since Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death, which released to something of a mixed reception and struggled with a staggered release window that saw it launch in different parts of the world between 2003 and 2005.
All in all, the Mega-City One Judge hasn’t had the best of times with adaptations in general. The 1995 film starring Sylvester Stallone is now notorious for its treatment of the character and cheesy dialogue, and although 2012’s Dredd earned the respect of long-term fans and some solid reviews, it struggled to find a larger audience and seems destined to remain as a cult classic. This boils over into the world of video games, with previous releases over the years also struggling.

However, there could be a chance for someone to have another crack at the 2000 AD character. Speaking with VG24/7, Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley suggested that there could be some news coming soon about some games based on 2000 AD properties, including Judge Dredd. This comes after Rebellion opened up to the prospect of other studios working on 2000 AD games last year, so clearly some positive discussions have taken place.
“We’ve talked to and we have agreements with a number of different people,” stated Kingsley at E3. However, Rebellion is not ready to announce the specifics of the projects because, at the moment at least, it’s still a little too early. The CEO did go on to state that “there may be announcements coming in the next few months,” though, which will no doubt be interesting news for 2000 AD fans after another video game from the property.
In spite of its status, 2000 AD has been somewhat underutilized when it comes to video games. Rebellion had previously released Rogue Trooper and its Redux edition, but has spent more time on its own properties. However, this might not come as much of a surprise, given the middling critical reception that Rogue Trooper received versus series such as Sniper Elite, whose entry last year was considered one of the best games of 2017.
Even so, it’s going to be intriguing to see what these further 2000 AD projects are. Fans will want to see exactly which developers are taking on which properties before getting too excited, but if Rebellion has truly vetted the studios in question then it may well be that gamers could have a faithful Judge Dredd game on the cards. With that TV adaptation also in the works, now’s a good time to be a Judge Dredd fan.

Batman (Ultimate Collection) consiste en: Batman is an ongoing comic book series featuring the DC Comics hero of the same name. It was first advertised in early April 1940, one month after the first appearance of his new sidekick, Robin, the Boy Wonder. Though the Batman comic book was initially launched as a quarterly publication, it later became a bimonthly series through the late 1950s, after which it became a monthly publication and has remained so since.
Comic-Historie - 80 Jahre Comics handlich zusammengefasst
Spiele-Entwickler machen TV-Serie

Shamesplosion II: Regexance
Game #26: Legend of Kay, Neon Studios, 2005
Legend of Kay is part of a peculiar group of games from the waning years of “Character Action Games” (now known as 3D platformers). In some ways these games, including Kay, are some of the best in the genre. The industry had learned how to make controls feel good. Even more esoteric things, like combo moves, had been standardized to a degree. The camera, once nausea inducing, now seamlessly balanced between the gentle hand of the game and the user’s input.
For all that is expert about Legend of Kay, it flies a bit too high. The cutscenes and conversations over-rely on generic, canned animations. I believe that all the voice talent in Legend of Kay were fine actors, but, searching the game’s credits, there was not a dedicated voice over director. As such the voice performances as a whole leave something to be desired.
Why am I picking these nits? Because cutscenes demand a certain quality to justify their presence in a game. Unless they are very good, they drag the experience down. I think I’d have enjoyed Kay more if the conversations had been presented only as text. I don’t say that to be cruel, I honestly believe that the atmosphere would have been easier to establish.
Game #27: Quadrilateral Cowboy, Blendo Games, 2016
Quadrilateral Cowboy vs. Jazzpunk is an amazing case study in game audio
Largely because, given access only to the visual elements of both games, you could easily be forgiven for confusing the two.
Both have an aesthetic that blends minimalist geometry and a honey-mustard color-sheme with 80s cyberpunk, both feature a main character who is sent on various "jobs" which involve traveling to an ambiguously virtual dimension to perform espionage, and both treat pre-digital and recently digital technology as a plaything in their world-building.
If, however, you were given only the audio of each game, you would never confuse the two.
On the blog for Necrophone games, they outline the absolutely bonkers lengths they went to to achieve the sound. Many of the noisemakers used for Jazzpunk's soundscape actually built from scratch, soldering and all, by the game's creators. Bringing that level of depth to a game's sound would be admirable for a sound designer, let alone someone who is also devoted full time to simply making the game.
The soundscape of Jazzpunk is like nothing else I've heard before or since, except perhaps in a Martin Denny record. It's a jangly, agitated mix of synths and old jazz records, a kind of James-Bond-cyber-mambo. The implementation is straightforward for the most part, though outright bizarre at times, with attention-grabbing samples coming it at inappropriate times, but because the rest of the game is so damn weird you forgive it somehow.
For everything that is bizarre about Jazzpunk, it relies on more traditional adventure puzzle mechanics, as well as callbacks (there's a quake clone hidden in a wedding cake). The puzzles are hilariously gratifying to solve, but Jazzpunk does not have many new skills to teach the player.
Quadrilateral Cowboy is, in some ways, more sophisticated than Jazzpunk, and I'm not just talking about their approach to humor. Cowboy's gameplay has something quite new to offer players, and something which feels like somewhat of a holy grail in game design; it makes it feel cool to write code. For a while it seemed like there were so many attempts to make games about coding that reviewers were declaring the effort itself to be futile. But Cowboy has done it.
When you look at the credits in Quadrilateral Cowboy, under audio, it simply says "Soundsnap.com" As such very little in Cowboy's soundscape really feels like it belongs to the game. Many of the sounds are appropriate enough. But they do not have that intangible sense of having somehow come from the game itself.
The implementation of sounds is just as puzzling as in Jazzpunk, but unfortunately it is to negative effect. Point-located sounds are at maximum volume when standing near them, and nearly silent when a few steps away. When the player character throws something, they often emit a cough, not the expected effort sound.
The music is completely diagetic, which can be a powerful decision. It is all licensed, and is used to build the settings and tell you things about the characters. All in all a strong point in the soundscape.
I adore both games, but y'all can guess which has been my enduring favorite.
Game #28: Snuggle Truck, Owlchemy Labs, 2012
This game has been in my library for five years, and I sorely regret not playing it immediately after buying it. Snuggle Truck smacks of the Indie Revolution. These kinds of games, centered around a straightforward-but-wiley physics-based mechanic, will always have a special place in my heart. I found myself wondering if this game would be able to stand out if it were released today. Perhaps it would, given Owlchemy’s outreach.
But how Snuggle Truck would do in today’s market has nothing to do with it’s validity as a work of art, nor does it have anything to do with how deserving it is of commercial success.
I think about the discussion going on in the indie game community, about the “indiepocalypse” and the “indie bubble.” I think it’s easy to forget that there was never a time when making a game was risk free. It was never a case of, “make game, get paid, onto day three of my indie adventure.” It has always been hell. Maybe the marketing wasn’t hell for a short while. Everything else has always been hell.
Game #29: Day of the Tentacle Remastered, Double Fine, 2016
I don’t like admitting that I always kind of thought Broken Age invented the whole switching between characters thing. I’ve been touting myself as a fan of point and click adventure games for a while now, and it’s just embarrassing to think I had gotten the whole picture after having played only a tiny selection from what the golden age of this genre has to offer. Man there are a lot of these things. They are a huge time sink though, often designed to take 40 hours to play. I’m not gonna lie, as much as a I adore these games I have myself a good ol’ fashioned think before I choose to start in on one.
Day of the Tentacle is great, by the way.
Game #30: Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death, Rebellion, 2003
According to steam, I have played this for 13 minutes. I couldn’t tell you a thing about it because I have no memory of doing so.
Game #31: Elite Dangerous, Frontier Developments, 2014
Oh the deep, dark, horrible shame. My boyfriend bought this game for me at considerable expense in the hopes of giving us another thing to do together. As we booted up the game, he explained to me how we would do one simple thing to boost my cash reserves, and that we’d then be able to do some fun stuff together. He would give me some items, I would sell them. Easy. Would you care to guess how long this took? Trade and sell. How long? How long do you think?
Three hours. It wasn’t because of our internet connection, it wasn’t because we were very far apart, it wasn’t because we had to do multiple runs, that is how long it takes to do all of the preparatory work in the 20 odd menus and locales you need to visit, then rendez-vous in space, then use a slightly smaller set of menus to open a thing, arm something else, send out another thing, there’s something called a limpet, (I’m assuming it’s named after a British cookie) and then I got the thing and then I could fly back to the station blah blah blah blah.
I cried. I cried, people. I felt so much like a dumb failure, like a complete waste of my boyfriend’s generosity, that it honestly upsets me to write about it. He did his best to comfort me and assured me he wasn’t mad (yeah, he saw the cry happen) but we have never played it again. I still technically own it but I have hidden it from my steam library because the mere sight of it is disturbing to me, even now.
Game #32: Mass Effect 2, Bioware, 2010
I have started using Mass Effect 2 to bone up on my German. It’s got full German language support. I only get about a 3rd of what they’re saying. It makes me chuckle how the made-up sci-fi words get pronounced with an American accent.
Game #33: TRI: Of Friendship and Madness, Rat King, 2014
Exposition of any kind is a tough sell, especially in the fantasy genre. Unless you have Ian McKellen in your roster, almost any fantasy writing is going to sound silly when read aloud. Put another way, dramatic voice over in a game is one of those things that cannot be anything less than great. I’m tempted to compare this to Journey. Both do a good job of building a fantastical world with magical architecture and a story that existed long before you arrived, but Journey does it better. They probably could have gotten a budget for voice over, but they chose not to use it, and I think it was the right decision. Even with the best voice cast and writers in the world, human voices would have made the world more familiar, to it’s detriment.
And here’s the thing: in all likelihood, the team behind Journey wrote down just as much detail about the backstory of their game as Tri presents aloud, and a million times more. It may seem that choosing to tell your game’s story without voice over would save effort in terms of storytelling, but nothing could be further from the truth. To expose a world to a player without dialogue, you have to know how your world affects the walls, clothes, materials, gestures, decor, artifacts, absolutely everything the player encounters, because that is the sum total of what you have at your disposal to tell your story. I’m told that there’s a real mind bender of a game waiting for you if you stick with it, so I may revisit.
Game #34: Robot Roller-Derby Disco Dodgeball, Erik Asmussen, 2015
I am a chronic late adopter of multiplayer games, partially because I’ve never been able to afford them when they’re new. I’ve never joined one in time to get good at it at the same pace as all the early adopters. For my entire life playing games, I’ve found myself getting stomped by people who have hung on long after a game’s heyday, people who know every trick, and who’s patience for newbs ran out years ago. Which is a shame because this game is colorful and awesome.
