Diana’s teeth were chittering, her breath a little laborious, and no matter how warmly she was bundled up, she barely felt like she was retaining any heat at all. But it was no matter - this was all her idea. Ever since moving to Reno for her residency, she’d established a yearly tradition of building a snowman when the snowfall was thick enough, and this year, she’d roped in a close friend to help.

“Right... here!” She said, finding a flat piece of ground for the base of the snowman. “If we can build him at the bottom of the hill... I think gravity should do half the work for us.”

4. Going for an incredibly late night walk.

SOFT FOOTSTEPS STRUCK the sidewalk by the neighborhood park, and the cold, dry air stood still as clouds loomed stagnantly overhead. It was an unusually dark and overcast night for this part of Nevada; neither the moon nor the stars cast their welcoming glow upon Phi and Delta as they strolled the park’s perimeter, trying to quiet their own thoughts.

It’d been a gloomy sort of day. There hadn’t been any one particular thing that had prompted the twins’ shared melancholy, aside from the weather and the fact that they’d seen a goddamn snail on their way to school that morning, but sometimes the weight of the world and the knowledge of their origin weighed too heavily on their little shoulders, and they had to take their minds elsewhere, difficult as it was.

Phi lifted her hand from the pocket of her sweatshirt and checked the time on her watch. 4:00 AM, huh, she thought, glancing back at Delta as he walked behind her at a slightly slower pace. The sun’ll be up in a few hours.

He didn’t have to say anything. He just looked up at her and nodded. They’d have to head home before 7:30 anyway, or their parents would wake up and discover them missing from their room, and then they’d have to explain why they were out of the house, taking an unsupervised stroll, when they were supposed to be sleeping. He didn’t know about Phi (well, he kind of did), but personally, Delta did not want to have the “what’s bothering you” conversation with Diana again.

After a few more minutes of walking in pensive silence, they caught a glimpse of a tall figure in the distance. Both twins noticed him at about the same time — a grown man who, from the sight of things, was in the same boat as them — and they cursorily shared a look of I wonder what that guy’s up to before Phi decided to get a little closer to see for herself.

She was curious, after all. What was the worst that could happen?

It had been a productive day at the mall. Sigma had spent upwards of one hundred and twenty dollars on all the cat-related items of clothing he could carry back in his arms. And Junpei had gotten the the things that meant the most to him - alcohol, books on bitcoin, and perhaps most importantly, authentic Calvin Klein® underwear. A very productive day indeed. 

It was a shame that both of their phones had died, and Sigma had uncharacteristically forgotten the charging cable at home. No matter, though. He’d been to Junpei’s apartment before, he could just drop him off there and still have time to get back by 5 p.m.

Wait, which exit was it again? Oh shit, Old Town Road came on the radio! Hat down, cross town, livin' like a rockstar, spent a lot of money on my brand new guitar! Baby's got a habit, diamond rings and Fendi sports bras! Ridin' down Rodeo in my Maserati sports car!

It was at the end of that final chorus that Sigma finally noticed something was up. He didn’t recognize this stretch of freeway at all.

“Hey, uh... Junpei. Did we pass your exit?”

“Like what?" He scoffed. “I’m not affected by the mayoral election, or the freeway traffic, or who won the latest baseball game. And the only time I’ll care about the weather is if it’s a cat-aclysmic cat-astrophe.”

Whenever Junpei would wake up from one of his nightmares reliving participating in the Nonary Games, he’d grab the first set of decent clothes he had in reach and head to the park a few blocks from his apartment to clear his head and get a smoke. Even though in this timeline everyone was able to escape, he was still haunted by the what-ifs that occurred in the others

He was so absorbed in his thoughts after finishing a cigarette that he didn’t notice that he was not the only person taking a stroll there . It was only when he heard footsteps approaching that he turned to see two teens, the girl trying to come closer. They both looked familiar, one of them having the same fiery hair of a person he knew. “Didya need something?” He wasn’t sure how to react to being approached like this.

PHI WAS TOO FAR from her brother now for him to pipe up and say something, but even at the distance from which he stood, his confusion as he got a better look at Junpei was staggering. This Junpei was from a timeline where everyone escaped, but Delta knew that these instances of himself and his sibling weren’t. They weren’t supposed to exist, not in these forms, in any timeline with a living Junpei. Would he recognize the twins? What would happen if he did? Which of them was out of place?

He started to follow his sibling, picking up his pace with no small amount of urgency, but then she opened her mouth.

Φ — “Not really. I just figured there might be something interesting going on. This park’s not exactly a hotspot of social activity, you know.”

Great. Now there was a conversation going on, and Delta definitely didn’t have the charisma to get himself and Phi out of it without looking immensely suspicious. Still, though, he didn’t stop walking. He needed to know what the hell was going on. The idea of having accidentally wound up in another timeline, away from the parents who raised him, away from everything he’d known, chilled him down to the bone.

But what would he even ask Junpei? What answer would he get that he couldn’t have simply read? Besides, if he revealed who he was or what he’d already discovered from his compulsive mental look-over, there was no telling how the man would take it.

Delta’s train of thought halted when he realized, after a few seconds of just standing there with his mouth open, that he looked like a total idiot. No matter what it was, he had to say something now.
